Title: OBH's proper role in life
Post by: el_chode on Mar 03, 2009, 01:27 PM
Alright, if there were a way to create polls, this thread would deserve it, but after arguing with a friend during a few heady brews, I need some professional advice:

Is OBH better as a set opener or show closer?

Opener. The first time I saw them in a full show, OBH opened and Anytime closed. It was perfect.

CLOSER---i've said it before, why (insert disgusting phrase) too early! SAVE IT.  :P

What about the tour when they opened behind the white sheet?

All you see is this whiteness, then the tistititistititistititis and Patrick's shadow and then you hear doodeleydoodeleydoodeleydoodeleydoodeley with another silhouette, and then there's the bumbump bumbump bumbump coupled with a doodeleydoodeleydoodeleydoodeleydoodeley and then it builds and builds and lights flash and you get a DUHN DUHN DUHN and the sheet falls along with all the skin left on your body.

You can't say that wasn't one helluva opener.

Magheetah is the closer.

Seriously, OBH ends with a slow pace, gets slower and slower and slower (that's why it sets the tables so nicely for I Will Sing You Songs).

think about it

Closer, no doubt in my mind.  I've seen it both ways, and have given this much thought.

Heck yes, that drum lickin' got me crazy pumped when they came out to it, but I feel like there are 25 other Jacket songs that could do that.  Because I am already amped going in, and because they simply have that many killer opener-worthy tunes.

Now the closer I am picky about.  And OBH is way above Anytime easily in my opinion, for one.  And really OBH has been the best way they've finished in my opinion in the 9 shows I've seen.  It's big, it's loud, it leaves your ears ringin' and your toes a-tappin'.  Another big factor I think is that it's one of their "hits" that the casual fan knows, so I think leaving those folks with a monstrous performance of it is huge.

I've only seen it as a closing song but it would be awesome to see it as an opener.

I think down the road, it should be the opener.  As the closer today, everyone leaves on an extremely high note.

As a U2 fan, they used to close with 40 and everyone left still singing how long... and later when they didn't close with it, it felt different.

But also that was pre-Joshua Tree and only the true fans were there.  Eventually.  Hopefully.  MMJ will be as big as U2, and one day we will lament that they don't close with OBH.

Today, my wish would be they would always open with OBH and always close with Steam Engine with Patrick smashing the drums as they leave one by one.

I dunno. The tour where they opened with the sheet in front of them was badass. But Closing is cool too. Hmmm.....

Neither. I feel it belongs in the middle somewhere. Magheeta is be the closer. I prefer At Dawn as the opener.

Closer for sure. THe problem is it leaves you wanting more. NYE, after four hours they played this, and I was ready for another 30 some songs.

If they ever start playing 2 sets, closet for Set 1 would be a hole-in-one

I like the idea of closing the first of a two set night with it. All three times i've seen them they closed with it and it is sad knowing when the show is over before it actually ends. It would be sweet to see a different ending every couple of nights.
