At first I thought this song was all about God.  Then I realized, that this is Jim's song to our President, Mr. Obama.  So it kinda is about God I guess...

But yeah, listen to it again...it now means so much more to me.

You think Look at You being about Barack is that far-fetched?  Jim obviously supports Barack, as witnessed by the fundraisers he played (or was going to play) in his honor.  I linked an article that quotes Jim, saying "I was very moved by Mr. Obama's words, very moved."

Is that and all the lyrics about being a good citizen and leader just a coincidence?

I agree that people can find their own interpretations to songs, but if you really believe that, why does this guy's interpretation anger you so badly?  Even if it is just a coincidence and Look at You really isn't about Barack, it is at least a reasonable interpretation of the lyrics and one that doesn't deserve ridicule.

I always thought (and this is just my opinion) that it was a about Bush.  And it was sarcasm, like "Look at you, such a fine example".  It seemed sarcastic to me.   Plus, we know that originally, it's probably not about Obama since it was written sometime prior to June of '08.  Although I definately could be wrong about that.   I think it has become a non sarcastic song about Obama.  With what Jim said in the interview on Triple J radio, I think it kind of backs up my theory a bit, but definately does not prove it.

I always thought Gideon was about Bush and his raping of culture and religion to further his own goals.

Still, though I am, and always have been sick of the hero-worship of the O-man, blind hatred of something is just as ignorant as the blind allegiance.

Even if the song is about him, the beauty of it is that it's ambiguous and you can let it mean what you want it to mean. So, Penny, it's still about you. And it's still about Bush and it's still about Obama.

The only shitty political songs are the ones that are personal attacks on the person and wind up being dated within a month. That's why Dylan and Neil Young persist and the Dixie Chicks and Kanye are laughed at.

This makes me sick. Can we let Obama do something before we totally felate him? I understand the change thing, and it is pretty sweet, but this cultish mentality is a little unnerving.  

Since we are throwing out crap about what look at you means, i guess i will play. I think look at you is talking about Bush's tranformation back into a regular citizen. You make good points.  Jim doesn't get political very often, but when he does, it's almost always followed by Gideon or Look at You.

It's cool if that is what you think its about...I just don't think Jim wrote a song about a person who hadn't even declared his candidacy when the song was written.  And to proclaim that the song is about Obama is just stupid.  The guy has been president for a week, hasn't really accomplished much in his minimal time in Senate, and has 4 very difficult years ahead of him in which time he could fail.  Point is, why would a song be written about a person who hasn't done anything?  How has he proven himself as a find citizen?  How is a he a glowing example of peace and glory?  He is a good guy who has a good vision for his country...that's it.  So until Jim comes out and says "this song is about Obama" I wouldn't post a thread about it.  Again, it's cool that you have given meaning to the song, but don't ruin it for the rest of us.

Different songs mean different things to different people. And the meaning of a song can change over time. Just because Jim didn't write Look at You originally about Obama doesn't mean it isn't dedicated to him now. If you hear a song and you recognize something in it, it is yours alone to keep as a reminder or a message or a life lesson. Gideon makes me happy, even though it is one of Jim's angriest songs. And I have the right to feel happy. Just as I have the right to hear happiness and hope in Gideon instead of desperation, DaFunkyPrecedent has the right to hear Obama in Look at You. As for what's in Jim's head, what makes you think you know better than anyone else? There's no way to know for sure. Again, I don't think it's "stupid" to say the song is about Obama.  I agree with what most people have said, the song wasn't originally written for Obama but gained a new meaning during the election season, not only for some fans for perhaps for Jim himself.  We know he likes Obama and that he has talked about the importance of voting at shows and then busted in Look at You.  

However, you choose to ignore these facts and go into a rant about how Obama hasn't done anything yet.  I'm not sure what you're point is, but I think you need to settle down, enjoy the music, and begin to realize that people who think differently than you aren't necessarily stupid.

If you read what i said.. I didn't say anything about what he hasn't done... He's only been in office what  a week.. I know i can't judge him by that... I fear what he talked about pre election and how he answered in the debates.. Plus being a REAL conservitive republican.. Unlike Bush.. I am skeptical of any Liberal Democrat that takes office...

Yeah, we can get along.  But I still think your viewpoints on Obama, at least the one's who've articulated here, are pretty ridiculous.  

And again, I don't think it's this forum or this thread that changed the meaning of the song. But really what's the difference if the song is about him or not? We know Jim is an Obama supporter, you can either ignore that or move on.  Would you walk out of an MMJ show if Jim said something about Obama.  If so, I said fare thee well.

Works both ways.  Bill O'Reily insisted that Democrats support Bush because "he's our president" and "this is a time of war".  You bet he's singing a different tune now, too.

IMO, Bush still hasn't gotten all that's coming to him.  He had tons of support from reps and dems after 9/11, the disrespect he received after that was a direct result of the screw-ups and flat-out frauds perpetrated against this country.

Well given the fact I didn't go see anymore shows this year when i found out they were donating to his campaign... I think i'd walk out.. As you can see politics greatly impact lives... and I go to a concert to hear music and escape that life... When i hear things like that it puts me right back out in the real world... The same reason I won't go see Pearl Jam anymore.. We don't need to know the bands political views.. BTW I will see MMJ many many more times.. I just pray he won't rant about politics in any way...

I think Obama has moved pretty swiftly in his "one week in office."  The problem is that he's only been in office for one week.  It takes a long time to reverse someone else's mistakes.  

Our country fell off the stage a while ago at the end of a bad ass guittar solo and suffered severe injuries to the torso, to the balls area, and to the mind area.  It is going to take a little time to get our strength back to the rockingset country in the world.  We have to get our finances in order (torso), we have to get our balls back in order (military) and we have to have every American citizen behind our new leader (who, by the way doesn't seem to have a personal agenda-the terms liberal and conservative are no longer important to point out) and help ourselves step it up (mind).  I know that once again, I am patriotic.  I know that I feel optimistic again.  And I think that every individual on this forum, and in this country feels the same way...some are just standing behind a position and refuse to admit it...because they can.  That's fine.

We have clearly stated that most likely Look At You was not written about Obama.  But is often interpreted that way these days, because of the spirit he has and the spirit he produces around him.  Jim is the only person who knows who that song is about.  But fuck you for saying people treat Obama like God.  People say that Jim is God.  People said that Garcia was God.  Let me tell you something... he was elected because WE (America) feel like he is the most capable person for this position.  He is a savior to some people and to some people, he will never be able to do enough.  But to others...he is more important than Jesus.  Because really...really...has any of us heard Jesus give a speech...or heard Jesus say that he would try his hardest to change the path we are on?  I haven't, either.

Great post, LD. Aside from all the pork in this stimulus package, he's tried to act pragmatically so far. I think pretty much all this appointments have been pretty good (even i didn't see that coming w/Richardson) I think a lot of obama supporters are in love w/obama himself, but the majority are in love w/the idea of what he could mean and how he could unite *instead of divide* he is working for the good of everyone, not just half the country who believes what he does. He's come to the middle on a few issues already and stuck to his guns on a few (guantanamo)...sorry to turn this into political discussion--

impeachment is such a big political/judicial issue too; Clinton lied under oath and while Bush did something much worse (leading a nation into a military conflict based on false or little info) it's more grey area in legalities. i think kucinich had the lead on this a while back but i haven't followed it for a while. It would be YEARS of subpoenas and testimony and there would probably never be an impeachment. I can't see it passing in both houses (or does it have to? can't remember but i think so) thanks for the info TEO. we could have used the answer 8 hours ago LOL..

I wasn't saying Gitmo killed any of its inmates. I was saying that it seems like you'd rather they be killed than given a fair trial if it's a decision between the two. If anything, just remember this: Hype around a president is nothing new, it's just that 95% of this forum has probably only known (conscious) life during a Bush or Clinton-era presidency (maybe a few of us were old enough to actually know what it was like under Reagan, but to me the Reagan years were full of Legos and Play-doh). Clinton never got kicked out of office, and that to me is a real impeachment. i dont give a shit about some toothless impeachment vote that resulted in nothing but a headline for 2 days. Yes, bush started a stupid ass war. but clinton started the mess we are in today. without him passing the CRA in 1999 along with another lending bill, we would have not given loans to people who didnt qualify, leading to this mess.

tracy, i don't think saying that the govt is the only one hiring is a scary thing to say. it's realistic. most companies are downsizing even if the company is doing well. companies w/surplus are not hiring because of fear of the unknown. law firms and financial firms aren't hiring, not even taking new associates; there are no manuf jobs aside from hard machinery (possibly), service sector is cutting back (as your starbucks jobs are going along w/a ton of others) employment rate going up to 12% by year's end. the fed govt has created a ton of new jobs;  how marketable is a middle-aged middle manager coming from a GM plant going to be even if there are service jobs? just wondering where all the private sector jobs are. perhaps i am missing something.

Someone gave my kid a wiggles tape a few years back. I almost strangled her.

Luckily the boy suffered no permanent damage from viewing this.

I guess on the positive side it was a learning experience as he now listens to kick ass rock n' roll along with Dad.  :)

WASHINGTON (AP) - Attorney General Eric Holder signaled a change on medical marijuana policy Wednesday, saying federal agents will target marijuana distributors only when they violate both federal and state law.

That would be a departure from the Bush administration, which targeted medical marijuana dispensaries in California even if they complied with that state's law.

"The policy is to go after those people who violate both federal and state law," Holder said in a question-and-answer session with reporters at the Justice Department.

Medical marijuana advocates in California welcomed the news, but said they still worried about the pending cases of those already in court on drug charges.

California law permits the sale of marijuana for medical purposes, though it still is against federal law.

Holder did not spell out exactly who no longer would face the prospect of raids by the Drug Enforcement Administration. But he was quick to add that law enforcement officers will target anyone who tries to "use medical marijuana laws as a shield" for other illegal activity.

"Given the limited resources that we have, our focus will be on people, organizations that are growing, cultivating substantial amounts of marijuana and doing so in a way that's inconsistent with federal and state law," the attorney general said.

Advocates and government officials had been waiting since President Barack Obama was sworn into office for a clear signal on what the new president's drug policy would be toward medical marijuana. As a candidate, he repeatedly promised a change in policy in situations in which state laws allow the use of medical marijuana.

Yet shortly after Obama took office, DEA agents raided four dispensaries in Los Angeles, prompting confusion about the government's plans.

Thirteen states have laws permitting medicinal use of marijuana. California is unique among them for the presence of dispensaries, which are businesses that sell marijuana and even advertise their services. Legal under California law, such dispensaries are still illegal under federal law.

Kris Hermes, a spokesman for national medical marijuana advocacy group Americans for Safe Access, said he welcomed Holder's perspective.

"It signals a new direction and a more reasonable and sensible direction on medical marijuana policy," he said.

Still, Hermes said his Oakland-based organization was concerned about the fate of more than two dozen California medical marijuana cases currently pending in federal court.

"There remains a big question as to what the federal government's position is on those cases," Hermes said. He pointed specifically to the case of Charles Lynch, who was federally convicted for running a medical marijuana dispensary collective in San Luis Obispo County last year.

Hermes said Lynch could face decades in prison when he is sentenced Monday even though his clinic had been compliant with state law.

The whole Look At You = Obama thing all hit me NYE at MSG when Jim said something political in the most unpolitical way like "it's 2009 and there's a great change in the air" or something like that and then went into Look At You.  It makes all too much sense...every lyric is dead on and IT IS a perfect song for the common man to attach themselves to a leader.  At that moment, when he sang Look At You, I felt so proud to be an American.  

Hey, if you dont wanna hear about Obama, come visit me in India!  I haven't picked up a paper in 3 months.  Whats going on in the States anyway? The only time I hear Obama, is when I tell someone Im from the USA (which I can now say with pride) and they smile ear to ear and say "Obama, Good man, very good man".  And I always say, "yeah, he's a good friend of mine".  But thats about as much Obama hearsay I get...sorry for all the others who feel plagued because they feel forced to hear about such a great person everyday.  Me, I have never been so proud to say a name before.

One last thing: it's okay if songs are about things.  People write because they are influanced by people, places and things.  In the case of the song "Ohio" CSNY were influanced by the Kent State Masacare, in this case, Jim James was influanced by Barack Obama.  He's not the only one to write a song about the guy...shit, tons of songs about Bush (good and bad) came out too.  I just happen to love My Morning Jacket and love the fact that Jim wrote a song about someone who I feel a very deep connection to aswell.  Makes me feel good about being so into this band...like im doing something right.
