"A few days are George Harrison passed away in 2001, Yim Yames was moved to record this six song EP of Harrison covers, paying tribute to a man he never met, but with whom he felt a special connection.  The tracks have a serene quality that mourn the loss of a legendary spirit while celebrating his enduring influence.

On the EP, Yames performs beautiful renditions of four cuts from Harrison's classic album All Things Must Pass as well as two of the Beatles tunes that he penned.  These six tracks have a raw, minimalist feel - featuring little more than Yames' vocals and acoustic guitar.  With all the space, the room in which the tracks were recorded truly serves as anouther instrument in the mix, creating an ethereal aura for a backdrop.

From his warm, multi-layered vocals on opening track :Long Long Long" to his near-whisperat the end of the album closer "All Things Must Pass" Yames sings in a fittingly intimate manner.  In the album's liner notes, he refers to Harrison as "a prime example of the healing power of music."  These words apply just as much to this EP.  As the final chords on Tribute To fing out, one can't help but feel a deep, satisfying sense of catharsis"

I doubt it would, and I'm glad he's doing it now. I feel like Eddie Vedder's solo career was for Super Fans only, but this is something that could go hand in hand with MMJ quite nicely. Ween and Wilco have no problems doing their own side things that get great acclaim without a total eclipse of the heart (of the band)

I agree, I think it could only mean good things for the future of MMJ.  Pearl Jam is another band that has had numerous side projects from Eddie solo, Stone's solo stuff and Brad, and Jeff's Three Fish.  It allows them to exist outside of the band, so to speak, and I have a feeling that PJ wouldn't exist today if it weren't for these side projects.

I'm not, but I am curious as to the difference between Z sales, EU sales, and sales for I'm Amazed as a single.

I think Z did wonders in turning people onto the band. Most people I know that like good music generally but had not heard enough MMJ to get into the band were sold after one spin of Z; in some cases all it took was Off the Record.

Don't think this has been posted yet, a short letter from Yimmy that isn't on this or his website...

Hello friends. Just like most everyone else under this crazy dome, I have been a fan of the Beatles since early childhood... But it wasn't 'till sometime in '99 that an old pal turned me on to "All Things Must Pass" and I quickly became even more enamored with the quiet beauty and majesty of all things George Harrison. He always seemed to be a beacon of good light unto the world, accomplishing the rare task of using his massive fortune and fame to promote peace - both within and around the World. I will always look up to and see him as a prime example of the healing power of music and how, in tune with it, all is possible.

The following are a selection of George's songs I recorded back in 2001, a few days after he passed that were moving me so very much at the time... I recorded them live at above the Cadillac in Shelbyville, KY... On my cousin John's "ol faithful" Fostex 8 track reel2reel, then overdubbed a banjitar or b. vox here or there. I find comfort knowing that all things must pass, but that as all things do pass their spirits are still out there moving us somewhere... doing what they do, just as real as they ever were in this physical world... I hear them singing and I feel them in my blood.

Thanks George for helping me to understand things just a lil bit better...

- yim yames (jim james from my morning jacket)

James also revealed that he's in the beginning stages of working on a full length solo record, but it's still coming to fruition. So who's gonna buy the vinyl tommorow?  I read somewhere that it comes with a free t-shirt.  I think it will be a animal sanctuary t-shirt.

I wonder if the cover of the vinyl will be the picture of the hot air balloon or whatever that is from the website.  Who would have guessed Jim would have a Worlds Fair picture on his website!  ;D  (Actually I have no idea what that picture it, but I'm guessing Worlds Fair.)

I think it's from a balloon race over Louisville-part of the Derby Festival.

I'm kinda hoping the cover is a white background with that b&w picture of him playing the guitar that's above the announcement at the beginning of this website.

I may grab it tomorrow.  Might wait til some of yous gets here and grab it then.   :-/

Im pretty sure its just going to be a white cover that says "yim yames   tribute to"

if there were to be a picture on it, id probably want it to be the b&w one you first see when going to yy.com where it looks like he's sitting on a train or something looking out the window.

I'm listening to it right now and it's great. Such a soft sweet sound...thanks Yim Yames 8-)

I'm not sure if this has been posted... http://woodstockfas.org/newsyimyames.shtml

" We're beyond thrilled to announce that Jim James, lead singer of the mega-popular, arena-selling-out band "My Morning Jacket," has announced the upcoming release of a limited edition EP, with a portion of the proceeds coming to the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary! The EP is a collection of George Harrison songs covered by Jim James (under the alias "Yim Yames"). They were recorded back in 2001 -- just a few days after Harrison's death -- and have been sitting in a vault ever since.

Both Jim and WFAS Director Jenny Brown happened to be in their common home town of Louisville when they met for the first time, and Jim was moved by WFAS's mission to rescue, protect and provide a voice for the most exploited and abused beings in the world -- farmed animals.

A vegetarian for ethical reasons, Jim thought the idea of this album as fundraiser for WFAS to be a perfect match. "I know this is something that George [Harrison] really believed in," he said, and that "George was all about treating all creatures equally and eating responsibly." With this summer being the 40th anniversary of the original Woodstock concert, it is fitting that a true proponent of peace and love be honored this way. "

Any one know about the timing of this release. Since it was recorded back in 2001, I'm just curious why it took so long to release. Don't get me wrong, I think the timing is perfect  (I was craving some new music). Any ideas?
Title: Re: Yim Yames...A Tribute to
Post by: aMillionDreams on Jul 08, 2009, 09:41 AM
It was recorded just after the death of George Harrison.  They wanted to release it then, but I believe legal decisions were being made about George's work, which made it impossible to release the EP at the time.  I even heard that they were toying with releasing it in Canada under another name (yim yames?) to get around the legalities but obviously that didn't happen.

As to why it is being released now.  I suppose they just didn't have the occasion to until now.  Jim said in an interview that the concert appearance he did with Paul and Ringo for the David Lynch Foundation inspired him to finally release this tribute.  No new MMj material probably helped with the timing of it all, too, I would guess.

Plus S&H and Tax. I thought the S&H was kind of high but after pricing all individually it came to about 5 bucks more at YY than Amazon or Sanctuary. I pre-ordered the whole enchilada cause a portion was to benefit the farm. They made that very clear. Not to mention you get the download to keep the veins pumped for a while!

Also, they did say everything would be available to all August 4. I'll probably get another vinyl at that time.

Unfortunately, I think she does...and that's reality.  They're all going strong in separate directions.  Jim's got the YY thang and the MOF thang...Pat's been with Dan Auerbach and is the best drummer on the great earth...Bo is busy with his musicianship, Carl's a daddy and very likely in high demand for his skills too...and Tommy has the auto shop in Shelbyville (and most likely will show up with somebody soon) so...

Is My Morning Jacket done...I don't think so, but we won't see them for a little while unless it's something special.

i just don't think they're the type of band to NOT out-do themselves...for them to come back w/an album, even more extra-terrestrial than EU, THEN top that w/a festival tour, just doesn't make sense if you've been paying attention to the interviews and to the things Jim's been doing (along w/the rest of them). what will they do, play a NYE show BIGGER or play a 6 hour set at bonnaroo-or put out an album full of R&B covers--the reason i love them so much is not that they're consistent (which they are of course, in that they consistently make me happy) but that they they have grown in every way possible w/each album and each tour and although i'd love to see them again, i'm in no hurry. to me it's like catching a butterfly to amuse yourself, which is altogether wrong and against nature; i want to give them all the room they need and a year won't be enough time, IMO (Okay, i'm done!! sawwwwyyyy) :-?
Title: Re: Yim Yames...A Tribute to
Post by: ALady on Jul 16, 2009, 06:03 PM
I think you're reading too much into the interviews.

I fully expect them to return to Roo, this time maybe as a headliner.  There's your growth.
Title: Re: Yim Yames...A Tribute to
Post by: aMillionDreams on Jul 16, 2009, 06:13 PM
Do you have any reasons to believe that?  The only people giving reasons in this "debate" are Penny and LoveDog. The "ya'll are crazy" argument doesn't hold water.

Oh, and there was, why wouldn't they play bonarroo?  I don't know, same reason they didn't last year maybe.
Title: Re: Yim Yames...A Tribute to
Post by: ALady on Jul 16, 2009, 06:26 PM
Where are the reasons, exactly?  That they've reached their creative apex as a band and can't possibly top EU, so they'll just call it quits?  That the band members can't have side projects and personal lives without the band imploding?  That's speculation, not reasoning.

Until we hear differently from the band - and we haven't, someone please correct me if we have - I don't see why it would be unreasonable to expect them to put out a record and tour within the next year or so.  Everything I've read indicates that the band is on hiatus, nothing more.

Stop freaking out, people    ::)
Title: Re: Yim Yames...A Tribute to
Post by: aMillionDreams on Jul 16, 2009, 07:08 PM
I'm not freaking out and I'm not suggesting this is anything but a hiatus, I just think it may be a little optimistic to hope for a record and a tour within a year when JJ is recording a solo album, releasing the Monsters of Folk side project, then has the Monsters of Folk tour, then he expects to release the solo album which I assume he'll at least do a few dates in support of.   If he can do all that and record and support an album with MMJ by bonaroo next year, I'll eat my hat.

I'll gladly support whatever side projects the individual band members participate in, but I'm hopeful we'll see more from the group as we know them.  I don't think there's any compelling "evidence" to support the demise of the band as we know it at this point, so I'll remain hopeful.

And my "y'all are crazy" wasn't put forth as debate, rather as a "MAAAAAAAAA, MAKE THEM STOP!"  ;D

I don't know...there's 24 hours in the day, I think Yim's got plenty of time.  It's not like he has to run over to the studio and record stuff when he gets home from his day job.  ;D

In all seriousness though, there are plenty of great records that were written in an incredibly short amount of time.  Creativity knows no timeline...it could take a year, it could take a week.

Since Yim has noted in interviews that 2009 would be a writing year for the band, I'd imagine there are a number of new MMJ songs already demo'ed, and that there's possibly some cross-pollination going on between the projects at this point.  I really doubt that each record is being created in a vacuum.  Speaking very generally, that's just not how musicians work.

Anyway, we really don't know, and we can't know...so without any real evidence to indicate a band breakup, I don't see any reason to be so fatalistic at this juncture.

Considering it was almost 3 years between Z and EU of no new material, I think I can live with the Harrison EP and MOF a year after EU, with the possibilities of a JJ solo album in 2010 and MMJ new shiznit in 2011

Again, no one in this thread has mentioned a band breakup except for you.  I'm only suggesting your timeline is a bit optimistic, as is Lovedog as is Capt as is Penny.  That's not fatalistic at all, it's a reasonable observation based on facts.  I'll have to remember to bump this next June so we can see who is truly "crazy".

Personally, I'm excited that JJ is stepping away from MMJ for a while to do his own thing.  I've always been an MMJ fan because of Jim, first and foremost, no offense to the boys (you know I love yas!) . So maybe the reason I can be more reasonable about this debate is because I don't see the band hiatus as a bad thing, quite the opposite.  I love MMJ but will gladly take a few years of JJ, YY, or however he wants to give it to us.

Forget about a break up. Back at the end of 74 the Dead (and make no mistake, I'm not comparing MMJ to the Dead) went on hiatus and all heads thought it was the end. They played just a handful of shows in 75, although many members did solo projects. In 76 they came back and what was to come is history. You all probably know this! Anyway just enjoy the live MMJ shows and videos for a while. Hell, back then all we had were cassettes to listen to!

So back to the artist formerly known as Jim and the Tribute album.

Which songs are your favorites? My sweet Lord and All things Must Pass for me, I think!

Does Jim do all the playing on this solo? Banjo, piano, backing vocals are bangin'!

What a great album, can't wait for the vinyl. Makes me wonder if there are other goodies like this laying around.

Maybe future releases will have Tim Tames on them.  :)

Fair enough, but I really don't think I'm being overly optimistic.  I guess I just don't quite agree with a quote like this:

Quote
Is My Morning Jacket done...I don't think so, but we won't see them for a little while unless it's something special.
:-/

When I spoke to Patrick about how the Auerbach gig came about, the first thing he said was that he wasn't ready to get off the road when MMJ finished up in Australia and Japan.  So when the Auerbach opportunity came up, he took it.  This is a band that LOVES to tour.  The Auerbach tour won't last forever, nor will Monsters of Folk (their tour will be this fall, and I'd bet that it won't be extensive since M. Ward and Conor have their own projects to deal with).  So by next spring, I really think MMJ will be itching to be on the road again.

Though it might be a bit optimistic to wish for a new record in 2010, I don't necessarily think they need to have a new record to tour behind, either.  After the banner year they had in 2008, I'd be really surprised if they aren't feeling some pressure from the powers that be to "strike while the iron's hot", so to speak.  We all know that this is a band that loves to perform, and it just doesn't make sense that they would take an entire year off of touring when they've never done so in the past.  I think we will definitely see festival dates and at the very least, a short US tour next year...IF (if if if) it turns out that I'm right, you can buy me a beer at one of those shows, 'cause you know you'll be there   ;)

Anyway, I'm excited about the side projects too; I certainly don't mean to detract from them at all.  I think it's great for the health of the band to take some time out to work on other things.  It's also been cool to see the guys in smaller venues and I really do enjoy all of the stuff I've heard from the side projects so far.

Let's not fight, okay?   :)  Back to the topic at hand, "All Things Must Pass" is absolutely gorgeous.

and god made bloggers ?

Jim James singing sawdust and straw acoustic covers of ancient George Harrison songs likely appeals to the strictly fam members only demographic. But say you're a My Morning Jackethead, searching to ease your way into  warm Tuesday morning like an old man journeying from bed to rocking chair, few options come more mild or pleasant. One of the more overlooked aspects about James is his endearingly absurd goofiness–from Oregon Trail New Year's Eves, to rocking Moon Boots on-stage, to baffling decisions to turn "J's" into "Y's." The Yim Yames project falls under that category. He's too wise to attempt to top Harrison's renditions, so the My Morning Jacket frontman opts for minimalism, unshackling his celestial Orion Belt voice and just having a good time (in a melancholy, mournful sort of way).  Hopefully, The Chiffons won't sue.

It all began last fall with a chance encounter between a rocker and an animal-rights advocate in their hometown, Louisville, Ky. Jim James — singer, songwriter and guitarist of the band My Morning Jacket — was dining out with relatives when the activist Jenny Brown, whom he had never met, approached him with a proposition.

Jenny Brown and Albie at the sanctuary in Woodstock, N.Y.
How about holding a concert to benefit the farm animal sanctuary that she ran in Woodstock, N.Y., Ms. Brown asked him.

Mr. James gave her his e-mail address, told her to keep in touch and went his way, but the proposal intrigued him. Several months later he came up with what he figured was a better way to help.

A few days after George Harrison's death in 2001 Mr. James locked himself in an old bathroom at a farm near Louisville and recorded six of Mr. Harrison's songs: an intimate, modest tribute of voice and acoustic guitar. The recordings had been shelved since then, and Mr. James said he wasn't sure they would ever be released, until he met Ms. Brown.

On Tuesday an EP with the six Harrison tracks hits stores, and part of the proceeds will go toward Ms. Brown's Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, a refuge for 150 or so abused, abandoned or sick farm animals, including a three-legged goat named Albie, a blind chicken named Coco and a 700-pound pig named Judy, after Ms. Brown's mother.

To Mr. James there's a clear connection between much that Mr. Harrison believed in and the work Ms. Brown does at the sanctuary.

"George was one of those people that always seemed to be a good inspiration for other humans, seemed like he was a very socially conscious person, a very responsible person," Mr. James said. He didn't know Mr. Harrison, he added, but described himself as an admirer of his music and character.

"George was always trying to put the good message out there," Mr. James added. "And I think that's what Jenny has been doing at the farm."

Ms. Brown and her husband, Doug Abel, opened the sanctuary in 2004, leaving behind careers in film and television. (She was an associate producer of the ABC News special "Report from Ground Zero," and he was an editor of the Oscar-winning documentary "Fog of War.") Because they rely primarily on donations to keep the farm going, she said she couldn't miss the opportunity to recruit Mr. James's help.

While visiting her mother in Louisville she had bumped into him the day before at an outdoor cafe, and though she immediately recognized him, she left without saying a word.

That their paths would cross again the following night "must have been some kind of sign," Ms. Brown said.

"Jim was leaving the restaurant and I could feel myself, like, 'O.K., Jenny, you've got to do it,' " she recalled. "I told him I was sorry to bother him and that it was unusual how we sat next to each other two days in a row, and here's what I do and, boy, wouldn't it be a dream come true if he could lend his support to our mission."

As it turned out, Mr. James and Ms. Brown found that they had more than just their hometown in common. She's a vegan, and he's a vegetarian, as Mr. Harrison was. And they both say they feel they are no better than, for example, a pig or a rooster — a belief that Mr. Harrison also shared, his widow, Olivia Harrison, said.

"He was the kind of guy who always put the bug outside," Ms Harrison said in a telephone interview from England. "He never stomped on an ant or a spider."

That a tribute to him will help support a home for abused farm animals is "an appropriate cause," she continued.

The EP, which Mr. James is releasing under the moniker Yim Yames ("I just wanted to make my existing name funny sounding," he said), was recorded at the Gallrein Farms in Shelbyville, in a plumbingless bathroom that is part of the same studio where My Morning Jacket recorded its first albums.

It includes four songs from Mr. Harrison's critically acclaimed "All Things Must Pass," which he released after the breakup of the Beatles, and two of the songs he wrote for the band, "Long, Long, Long" and "Love You To." (Mr. James's songs are also available for download purchase at yimyames.com.)

The Harrison recording is Mr. James's first solo venture, but not his first charitable foray. He has donated time to the musicians' outreach project Sweet Home New Orleans, helped raise money for the Center for Women and Families in Louisville and, in April, performed at Radio City Music Hall on a bill that included Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, among others, to benefit transcendental meditation, which Mr. Harrison helped popularize.

"I'm just lucky that I'm making a living with my music," Mr. James said. "And if I can help."

Nice. Got my package yesterday. Gave the t to the wife and quickly ran off to open the album. Really nice embossed front and the sleeve has a great pic of YY. Can't wait to spin it.

BH, the cd is in the vinyl, plain white envelope type holder.

The t was interesting. It is thin but has a different, comfortable feel to it. It says it's organic cotton. Don't know if that is better but only time will tell.

I'm happy!  :)

I love the shirt.  I have another one in that material and it has held up really well.  It's soft and light.  Great for summer time.

I have a question for Vinyl aficionados.   The CD and it's square paper sleeve left little (but obvious) scratches at all four corners where it touched my vinyl.  Will this make any difference at all when it plays or is probably just cosmetic.  I realize you can't see what I'm talking about but I wonder if this happens a lot with CD inserts.  I would think if it happened once, it would happen every time.

Rolling Stone reviewed and gave it 3 and 1/2 stars, nice little write up in the latest issue (w/Obama on the cover).  ;)

Hopefully I can get this record in the next couple of weeks, but all that I have heard off the website sounds awesome. I love the mellowness of the record.

have bought 4 copies of the cd. while i have always carried the flag for MMJ, something about the release has touched a new part of my soul. i can't play it for someone and not get a great response, which leads me to just wanting to hand it off to that person. i've given a copy to a pregnant friend who is up and down emotionally, my bff who is a few months from marriage and living her best days, and my current love interest who i have been on shaky ground with but she keeps coming back for more (she was my MSG-NYE date)...and of course a final copy for myself. good on ya Jim, these songs and your performances bridge gaps and save souls.

Totally agree, that's beautiful.  All Things Must Pass is so breathtaking.

Great post! I feel the same. I've bought two. This little EP is just SO powerful.......and it's so sneaky too because it just keeps gaining power with each listen. Jim is so awesome on this, and major props to George for creating the originals.
