Lay Low is a bitchin song. doesn't seem like it gets a lot of love around here. it should, it rocks pretty hard.
It definitely is. I am obsessed with the end of the song. I love how the different parts all take their turns, and the two guitars take turns bouncing off each other until they eventually dovetail into goosebumps by the end.
Def one of my all time faves. No question about it! As a matter of fact I'm going to listen to it right meow! 8-)
Definitely!! I'd say it's my 3rd favourite after Steam Engine and Dondante.

Just did that too! Lay low let the fetus rock............ :D
I just made my whole office rock out whether they wanted to or not! God that was amazing. I'm going to smoke a cigarette and pass out.

;D Definitely one of my all-time fav of theirs! ;)
gotta love the dueling guitar solo.
Quotegotta love the dueling guitar solo.
it screams bad ass live. when jim is hopping around stage with the mic singing his guts out and then he reaches to his left and magically is wailing on his guitar. fuckin love that shit.
the okonokos version of this song is epic. probably my favorite song of theirs. the lyrics are awesome
Lay Low is sexy, MMJ is sexy.

I always feel like the two guitars are making sweet guitar love :-* :D at the end, but remain two separate guitars. Then the two become one as they riff away into the night.
Laylow is one of my favourites. When I got Z it really made me sit up and listen. I couldn't get over it for days.
sigh.... i love Lay Low
One of my favorites. That riff at the very end gets me EVERY time! It seems to say, "Do you know what you just heard? Dig it. Dig it well."
Lay Low is their best and most intense live song; the studio version is excellent too. I usually include Lay Low when I play MMJ to non-fans and/or uninitiated.
This song does kill live. At the NYE show, it came mid to late in the main set, and it sounded so much louder and rockin' than anything that had came before. Here's to hoping they keep it all through the next tour.
first off..i don't think it's underrated. everybody knows that song kicks ass.
second...I see it as the next tours closer. Every time I hear it live, it gets bigger and bigger and bigger...

I was actually coming in here to say the same thing...After OBH, its the song I use most often as MMJ introduction. I sent an email to a few friends some months pack saying JJ rocks harder than Trey Antipasta, and the clips I included was OBH live from the Roo, War Begun live from somehwere I cant remember, and the last 3 minutes of Lay Low.
As someone who saw the "stage diving" rendition of Off the Record last year from about 10 feet away, I think Lay Low has some competition on most intense live song. :D
...and just by the amount of feedback thus far, I dont think the song is underrated by people. Everyone knows Lay Low is tits

How can something be underrated when you love it?
It is their Free Bird. When Jim picks up the guitar, after throwing off THE CAPE! It is magical.
8-)

it just seems like this song doesn't get much mention around here compared to the more intense songs, steam engine, run thru, dondante, obh, etc. I was more curious what people perceived more than anything.

Love Dogg will tell you how much I love it. Every time I hear it, I have to listen to it again to hear that solo!
mos def
The duelling guitars instrumental ending is the most beautifully orchestrated piece.
Just shows Jim's brilliance as a composer. Mustn't forget Carl's input though.
It punches hard yet is so melodic. People call it a jam but it's anything but. Not a note out of place. Perfection. :)
It was the first song i ever heard by them, so will always be SO special. I played it over and over and over and over.....
It is a sexy song!
always on all my mixes, so gutteral, facial song.... one of my tops
it's the song that sold me on them.....lay low is perfect after a night out before i put on some stuff to mellow out to...... ::)
that video was epic
Quotethat video was epic
I really wish there were more pro shot live videos out there. a lot of the videos are great, it'd be great if they did another DVD of some sort. the next tour is going to be insanity. whatever they put out will most definitely not be what we're expecting but shows and setlists are going to get very interesting if they release some more songs soon. shit if they just toured without making the shows standard like the evil urges tour it would be a whole new experience.
Lay Low makes me want to cry for joy because such a great song exists. It is NOT underrated.
I wrote this on the "Current Joys" thread a couple months ago:
I had a long drive home late last night. I was so tired and would randomly start yelling to keep awake. Halfway home "Lay Low" shuffled on to my iPod and I blared it. This was the first time in many months I've heard this song (not sure why the gap in play) and the wave of happiness hit me like a freaking brick. I was almost delirious. It repeated the rest of my trip.
Current joy: Rediscovering the love of a great song.
Lay Low is my favourite... this week. ;)
lay low definitely stole the show on NYE at MSG. the first time i listened to that bootleg, i had to listen to it again.
LL is not underrated. Those who have seen it live know what's up! Those who don't give it love :-X
Joining late, but amen to Lay Low as high on my list. One of the first tunes I heard and hit me like cupid's arrow. The dueling guitars remind me of another favorite live band- The Allman Bros. When Jim reached for his guitar in Boston (2:12 in on the video link below), I remember leaning towards my wife and saying "I just came in my pants!" Crude but effective expression of the moment, a highlight of the show, and every show I've heard.

I like that you include Highly Suspicious. I was taken aback by that tune, at first. Now, I love it! A lot of critics, pros and regular folks, cite that tune as too far afield for MMJ. I disagree. Their music is their music. 4 other guys in that band could have said, "Yo, Jimmy. We ain't playin' that tune." I'm guessing they all like to stretch their musical wings a tad.
When you look at the sum of great songs, their reputation as an amazing live band, and the nonstop critical acclaim, its odd that they are still virutally unknown to the average human. Though, I kinda like being part of this secret.
I remember when the Grateful Dead got big in the late 80's (had radio play and a video on MTV), the shows were packed with first timers that changed the scene. I definitely want as many people as possible to know the greatness of MMJ, but...

the whole "famous" thing is really a double edge sword. as long as they are living comfortably and continue to make music I don't really mind where I end up seeing them. If they do start playing huge venues I really hope this place makes a ticketing service like dave matthews band have. it's cool that they do the whole "if you've been a member longer you get better seats" thing. if they start playing arenas as a usual thing (I hope they stick to theaters personally, can't beat seeing them up close, General Admission style with a few thousand other people. ) but if they start playing huge places I don't know if I'd have as much fun stuck up on the upper level. but I've also been extremely spoiled by this band already so where I shit shouldn't bother me much either.
I'm a rambling drunk, in the end the dudes need to get paid, I hope they are successful for the remainder of their career. that's part of the fun I suppose following a band like MMJ, not sure exactly how fast they'll explode or how big they'll actually get, yet it's inevitably going to happen. I'll still crotch punch any person who doesn't know when to shut up the fuck up though. this fanbase rocks though, it's by far the coolest one I've been a part of, we'll beat some faces if need be for this band. it's some thug ass shit.
0h yeah, and I definitely agree with you yac about highly suspicious being underrated and hated on for no good reason. the song rocks seriously hard. live people eat that shit up. no complaints here, it's short and pretty damn intense. I'm down for some Highly Suspicious at any show.
