Title: The "Was that a new song or not?" Thread
Post by: el_chode on Apr 22, 2010, 07:42 AM
So far:

Friends Again - First played @ Birmingham - 99% sure it's new
Carried Away - First played @ Nashville - ??????

I read somewhere that Carried Away is a Carl song. Maybe from an upcoming solo album or something. Friends Again definitely sounds new, I read a couple reviews of B'Ham and they stated Friends Again is new. But is it new MMJ or new JJ??

I guess that Carried Away is a track he released separately after Lose What's Left.  I may be wrong about that.  Anyways, you can hear a live version from 2007 here.

I would assume so. I've always really liked that song.

You can hear a recorded version on his myspace:

He also has a facebook:

I am totally jealous about that Nashville setlist.

He also mentioned something about a new solo album at the end of this video:

I can't get Friends Again out of my head...that is one catchy little ditty! I have convinced myself that it is a JJ solo effort not a new MMJ song. What do you guys think?

After seeing Friends Again live three times in a week, plus hearing it through the tapings twice, I have grown to like it more and more.  I think it sounds like a track that didn't make Evil Urges, sort of a B side track, but written around then.  Just a guess, based on its arrangement and performance.

I just love it.  It's so funky and the beat just makes me want to dance.  I feel like it's kind of like an awesome Wham!/Earth, Wind & Fire hybrid   ;D

I can't stop listening to (Don't Get) Carried Away.  The way it starts  off kinda reminds me of the I Shall Be Released finale from The Last Waltz.

But even though it's covered with simplicity, it's very powerful.  Wish I knew all the words.

I really like that tune as well. It didn't jump put at me on the first listen, but it grew on me big time.

Consequence of Sound, via You Ain't No Picasso, is sort of lumping these live performances as "highly anticipated new tracks"

I gotta say, they may gloss over the true nature of these songs, but the seem really freakin excited to report on them

Edit: I'd also like to add to my ongoing series of "El Chode's Sirius MMJ Watch List" that Oh Sweet Nuthin' was spinning in all its glory on Jam_ON

From the Consequence of Sound article, ""Friends Again" sounds like the band is playing at the coolest high school dance ever."  I thought kinda the same thing each time I heard it (played at all three shows I  attended two weeks ago).  I recall the Jacket doing some kind of prom show and thought it sounded like the kind of song a high school rock band would play at a dance, in this case a mind-blowingly talented high school rock band and the coolest dance ever.

"Friends Again" is the jam.  Haven't been so excited about hearing a song live in as long as I can remember.  Hope they play it at Sasquatch!

I would also love to hear it as Saquatch, It'll be fun to sing along to a song that almost everybody there will never have heard.
