I am always amazed of the power that MMJ has to attract new fans. I think it is a wonder of their musical talent and a true blessing to us as listeners. The reason I am bring this up is to tell you a quick example of how the music of our beloved boys can span all ages and types of people. This example involves my Dad, a 63 year old semi-retired father of five. He is conservative in most aspects of his life, has an enormous heart and dedication to family. The cool thing about his conversion (or introduction) to MMJ is not that he now truly enjoys the music, but how he came to hear it in the first place.
It all started when I noticed that his iPod, that we had given to him 2 years ago was still in the box unopened. He is not the most technical savvy person, but he is learning. When I saw this poor little IPod being forgotten about, I took it upon myself to kidnap it. I did not take it for myself, but I took it to load music on to it and then give back to my dad for use. I did what I thought was right, and loaded all the music that he enjoys: Chicago, Neil Young, James Taylor, The Beatles, etc. You know, music for people from the 60's & 70's. But, I also had to put some of my music on it so I had something to listen to when we were in his car. I loaded the "Acoustic Citsuoca – EP" on to it.
Well, this last weekend when I was up at my dad's house for the holiday he thanked me for helping him with his iPod. He also said he wanted to change some of the music on it and if I could show him how. I thought he was going to ask me to take my music off of it, but that wasn't the case. He said he wanted more of that music that I had put on there. It turns out that he has been listening to "Acoustic Citsuoca – EP" on continual repeat for the last month. He wanted more of My Morning Jacket. I was blown away...all I had done was plated a tiny seed of MMJ and it had taken over yet another listeners ears.
Nice. Well done.
Excellent story.
I've got my mom listening to MMJ after taking her to see Monsters of Folk on her 65th birthday. For my dad, 74, its a work in progress. I've started by burning him a copy of Preservation and pointing out the tracks with Yim Yames. I'm working on a mix of MMJ to give him next week.
He's a jazz nut, but very old school, so I'll probably stick with some acoustic stuff and some good jams, like Dondante, Lay Low, Run Thru, Cobra. He likes Pink Floyd and the Dead, as much as he hears 'em when I'm around, but he grew up more of a Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller kinda guy.
cool story!!!
i'm debating on introducing my dad to some mmj. he's a bit older (turns 80 in august!) & listens mostly to classical & opera. but he also likes folk & bluegrass. (everything else is "garbage" btw ;D) but i'm thinking he may just like some acoustic mmj. between jim's voice & the spiritual lyrics it may just work.

Maybe try Acoustic Citsuoca...it will easy him in.
I turned my parents on to the Jacket via the WFPK Christmas session. Whatever works! ;D They've been asking to see them for a while now, but I think I'm going to wait for them to come to a nice seated indoor venue here. Outdoor show in August in Chicago isn't gonna cut it... ;D
My mom after we watched the Charleston dvd on their 46 inch led tv: "I totally get it now"
by the way John, it's a masterpiece

i think i shall do just that. he's not really the kind of guy who'd enjoy getting his face melted ;D
AND, perhaps the WFPK christmas session - he loves, loves, LOVES christmas.
i think this is do-able folks. thanks for the suggestions!

That is so cool!! I just found out that one of my MMJ cd:s that I planted in my sisters car (to get her and her boyfriend hooked) got hold of a new fan :) The other day her boyfriend where driving his boss home from work and the cd was on in the background. The boss asked my sisters boyfriend about the name of the band, and thereafter said that he definitely would gonna buy the record. :)
Awesome stories! My mum loves MMJ- Golden is one of her favourite songs ever. My dad liked them aswell.

Y'know, I hate to admit it, but it was in this thread that I finally realized the the second word in the title of this album is the first word backwards. D'oh!

I have learned that there are some things that we should keep to ourselves. I feel sorry for your children ;D...only joking. It took me awhile to figure out that one too...
I never thought I'd feel young in this forum at 55 but now that I know there are 70 and 80 year-old fans, or "works in progress", well I guess I could delude myself into believing I'm at least in the middle of the pack.
Rather than trying to enlighten my parents (they are very liberal but the music thing is not going to happen) my challenge is converting my kids and their friends. I'm making some progress with my son who saw Jim in London with Carl in St. James Church (5/22/08) on the excursion where they also did the Black Cab Session, and joined me, his mom and friends in the pit at Merriweather. Next stop is Pittsburgh where he is living now!

That is awesome! Middle aged pit warriors, unite!

Wow...do you adopt 33 year olds? ;D Those are some wonderful experiences...and I think MMJ is great family time.
Never "mis-underestimate" the power of The Jacket...'W' has been gone for a while but his quotes are timeless!
great story duder. give your grandpappy something he can really feast on. Maybe At Dawn to start? The EPs are nice but if he was playing that shit on repeat for a month you gotta hook him up. I'd even say throw him It Still Moves, Split EP, along with a few others the other posters are suggesting. let him be saturated in it, he's ready. he's already heard the omnichord so he's obviously open to some weirdness. Maybe Z would even rock his brain. don't under estimate those old folks, they were alive when music was it's most pure.
This is why I am so happy MMJ is gonna play with TP&THB. I can see MMJ's fan base shaping into a Tp type fanbase. I am 33 and currently converting my 10 year old daughter. I swear my 3 year old's first sounds as a baby were part of wordless chorus. I used to lay her down with Okonokos on the tube. HeHe . Anyway talkin about the range of ages, One of the coolest things I saw at a concert was at Tom Petty 08. Seeing a 70 year old man pass a joint to 30 year old woman but having to go around the 10 year old boy..
This is why this band is so great! It's more than just good music becuause it's music that touches peoples souls from young to old. Every individual finds something for them in a lyric , song or simply the overall feel of a song.
This was a great story!

Well, if you don't come with a lot of baggage, can mow my lawn once a week, and can take me to MMJ gigs when I'm 90 we may have a deal. ;)
I can at least buy you a beer at the Pittsburgh show.
