I'm a new fan and this song has quickly become one of my favorites, if not my favorite from the band. I was watching the ACL show and after a few viewings, ''War Begun'' really hit me hard. I wish they would have put it on ''Okonokos''. I like the one from 6/3/03 too. Anybody else a big fan of this song? I love how they jam it out.

I'm guessing you hit on a favorite subject. Everyone loves War Begun. Its on my short wish list. One of my favorite (borrowed) War Begun moments is the short video of the solo during fireworks in Nashville 2008:

There are a few "I NEED to hear live" songs and War Begun is on top of that list. One of my favorite versions is off TTF & AD demos disc...Most Excellent!
When they played this song in '08 at HOB myrtle beach, I was converted to mmjicism. I didn't know the song very well, and I hadn't a clue yet as to what the words were, but the feeling emitted from the band just blew me to the wall...
HOB didn't let anyone record the show, and as far as I know this is the only audio/video that exists. The audio is very patchy but it still gives a semblance of the feeling at the climax. It happens to be from the War Begun:

The soloing at the end kills me man! I've been lucky enough to see them play it a few times and every time it's been a "wow, it doesn't get much better than this" feeling. Dammit August can't come soon enough!!

They played War Begun in Melbourne 2009 and I was not even two feet away from Carl. I could touch the stage from where I was. I think I squealed when they started playing it.
Great call on this tune. It was a creeper for me too. I'm not sure what live version I am thinking of but it might be the one you mention here - sweet sweet jam. You just get lost in the tune.
