There will be days of peace you'll

"the fact that my heart's beatin' is all the proof you need"  and "put in more than you could ever get out" are tied.

Don't let your silly dreams
Fall in between
The crack of the bed and the wall

Runners up:

I need a human right by my side untied

Then I saw a new heaven, formed in the bleeding light of dusk
All souls, all faiths: always, we were one

Sometimes I wanna lay down babe
Sometimes I wanna stand up and fight
Sometimes it runs its course in a day
Sometimes it goes for night after night

And, of course, all of Where to Begin.

Hopefully it occurs to me that there's one thing I cant stand.
That's the thought of a single day, without your head in my hand.

Honestly, I fell in love with MMJ long before I got a strong sense of the lyrics.  The overall sound, the feeling of their music, was not necessarily bolstered by a clear understanding of what JJ was actually saying.

I was frustrated in my attempts to find accurate lyrics, when all along most were available on this site!  As I expand my repetoire of MMJ covers on my Omnichords (another story), I've gotted a better understanding of the words, or a greater confusion.

Being home sick these past few days, I've looked over the lyrics I have and found five lines that stood out for various reasons.  I think, from these choices, you'll regard me as a hopelessly horny guy with a sense of humor.  In no particular order...

oh! this feeling it is wonderful! don't you ever turn it off!

a good showerhead and my right hand – the two best lovers that I ever had.

I can tell by the sounds you make
When you are pleased, you see yourself in me

ahhhhhh ahhahh ahhhhh ahhahh ahhhhhahh ahhh ahh ahhhh ahh (aka Wordless Chorus)

Two times I fell asleep in a dirty basement
snoozing in cobwebs and the cement.

By the way, this is made harder by the fact that I decided not to replicate any lyrics already cited in previous posts.  My compliments to all of you for your fine choices.  Peace.

There will be bigotry and there will be open minds.
There will be days of peace you'll never have the time.
AS LONG AS YOU KEEP A STRAIGHT FACE,
I will be there when you die.

There are far too many incredible and moving lyrics but two that stick out are:

People always told me
that bars are dark and lonely
and talk is often cheap and filled with air
sure somtimes they thrill me
but nothing could ever chill me
like the way they make the time just disappear

And a close second;

It's not the way that you look
but your move that catches my eye

QuoteHonestly, I fell in love with MMJ long before I got a strong sense of the lyrics.

Oh, I agree.  The first lyric to jump out at me was this:

if it falls apart or makes us millionaires

but lately it's this:

do you live your life on the run?
losing out on loving
asking for nothing
running from something that isn't there

Why does my mind blow to bits every time they play that song?
It's just the way that he sings,
Not the words that he says, or the band.
I'm in love with this soul, it's a meaning that I understand.

The lyrics that I've found to be most profound lately are:

On and on and on I drive
When will I know I have finally arrived?
So far I've gone, so far to go
It never ends
Always startin' over but somehow I always know where to begin

I always read the forum and have never created an account but when I saw this discussion I could sit back no longer. The Way That He Sings  is definitely in my top three and the lyrics to that song are amazing but each of these songs are beautiful.

"HOLD UP – YOU SHOWED ME. OH WHAT YOU TOLD ME – IT'S NOT WHAT YOU WANT BUT WHAT YOU NEED IT'S NOT
A HEAD FULL OF PILLS OR AMPHETAMINES"

"Kumbaya my lord
come row your boat ashore
the rivers long
it is cold
it chills the body but not the soul oh"

"it's not the dream
that makes you weak
it's not the night that makes you sleep"

"it's not the beast. it's not the sheets
so soft and warm. all over me"

Danz, people ask me all the time what my favorite MMJ song is and I think it is has to be Lay Low. The first couple of minutes remind me of some of the earlier stuff, it's a pretty, warm song until Jim cuts in and then the song rocks the shit out of whatever speakers it's being played on.  And it's awesome on the album or live.

a chance
a glance
sho 'nuff mood for romancin
so low down, can't you see, that you only gotta dance with me

don't let your silly dreams
fall inbetween
the crack of the bed and the wall

still feel i'm getting ill
chills
down my spine

your brain melts in the twilight
the foreign lookin trees
your skin looks good in moonlight
god damn those shaky knees
the fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need

and ironically:

it's the way that he sings
not the words that he says or the band
i'm in love with his soul
it's the meaning that i understand

that's as far down i could narrow it.  i'm sure i could list a whole bunch of others tomorrow.

First some honorable mentions :) :

Why does my mind blow to bits every time they play that song?
---
Religion should appeal to the hearts of the young
---
"all your life is obscene!"
"forget the papers, forget your musical dreams!"
but that's when my knife rises,
their life ends and my life starts again!
---

And my favorites (tied):

and you always told me.
no matter how long it holds me if it falls apart
or makes us millonaires.
---
the fact that my heart's beating
is all the proof you need

3. Chancing, glancing, sho nuff mood for romancing
so love dawg cant ye see that you only gotta dance with me.

2. Just Believe And You Can Do.
You Know My Heart - It Beats For You.

1. How do you take him speaking so much?
How do you live without a lover's touch?

I can't pick 1 or 2 lines from this song, but am partial to its entirety...it's art

I've got a masterplan babe, I been workin on it from the start.
Pluggin in all of the numbers, watchin it on all of the charts.
Just cause it starts off slow babe, doesn't mean it don't have a heart.
You'll be walkin round showin off someday
and it'll take you right back to the start.
It's everything that you want babe.
It's everything that you need.
Soft and warm all the time, make you want it over and over.
Strong on the horizon, but ends up bein really so sweet... oh so sweet.
Sometimes I wanna lay down babe.
Sometimes I wanna stand up and fight.
Sometimes it runs it's course in a day. Sometimes it goes for night after night.
Know that it will start off strong babe, and it will end up weak in the end.
Just like the heart you break of a love babe, just like the hand you take of a friend.
It's everything that you want babe.
It's everything that you need.
Soft and warm all the time, make you want it over and over.
Strong on the horizon, but ends up bein really so sweet... oh so sweet...

Im in love with this soul, it's a meaning that I understand

your spark. There's still time, for you, to change your mind or whatever else you do. there's still time.

you'll be right here forever. we'll go thru this thing together
and on heaven's golden shore we'll lay our heads

the fact that my heart's beating, is all the proof you need...this line just makes you feel so loved.

alright I've come to the conclusion these are my favorite my morning jacket lyrics of all time:

"On the way back home...
How long did it seem?
3 days or 4? snow glazed all the trees

My mother held me... like a motorcycle, so warm...
We sang melody...
Campin out all night... slow moves in the light...
Of all the things that you've seen...
Was the motorcycle so warm you sang melody?
At that moment I'd know... just how close we could be
And though it always was mine... it always seemed new to me
10,000 colors in all... eyes like caves on my cheeks
To all the people i've loved... don't think poor of me
It wasn't till I woke up...
That I could hold down a joke or a job or a dream
But then all three are one in the same
And all then are one in the same
And all us are one in the same
"

I bolded my favorite lines from it.  I tripped out to it still moves once on mushrooms with my friend and that song syncronized perfectly with the snow and cold outside,  it was.. beautiful.  I should add steam engine made the ceiling appear to be a blue sky with white clouds, the light fixtures had turned into UFO's.  Rollin Back made the lights in the room turn yellow which is weird, you'd figure golden would have done that... or made it did.  fart.

"the fact that my heart's beatin' is all the proof you need"
Not to get all cheese-whiz on y'all, but this lyric has helped me through some tough times. I've been through health problems, had my heart broken, had to start over again and again... this lyric serves to remind me that no matter what happens, I'm going to be okay.

also of note:

"For all your days I wish you blindness from all the evil in the world"

"It's not the way that he sings, not the words that he says, or the band. I'm in love with his soul; It's a meaning that I understand"

"Always startin' over, but somehow I always know where to begin."

"Somewhere someone thinks of me, I just wish it was somewhere I could find."

I know it's been said time and again, but every lyric in "Where To Begin: is pure perfection.

I personally find that virtually every MMJ song is understated (lyric wise), yet contains such powerful meaning.

My mind is blown to bits over and over again and do I ever love it...  :D

Good to see this up again, I agree with the "Where To Begin" comment above. I also think the lyrics to "If All Else Fails" are especially good.

Got 3 big ones.

The fact that my heart's beating, is all the proof you need. (Gorgeous encapsulation of being happy in life and living in the moment.)

Sure he was a good kid, but his phone did never ring. He got tired of walking a tightrope and needing too much to drink.  (Just about the most tragic lyrics ever. Had days like this where you feel insanely lonely.)

Listen! Most of us think this is wrong. (Wake up world, most of the citizens of the US are kind, decent people who did not want the war in Iraq to take place. War sucks. Line kinda ties in with North American Scum by LCD, except a little more political as opposed to social commentary of NAS.)

Just read through this whole thread...great stuff here.  I cant beleive no one's mentioned it though. I'll have to give a nod to the entire song of Honest Man...I just love it
Try to walk this earth an honest man,
but evil waves at me it's ugly hand.
The radar watches me from above, shouting down:
I hope you make it on this earth.
Sometimes this world will leave you, lord,
kickin & a screamin, wonderin if you'll see the next day through.
But as for me I do believe that good luck comes from tryin,
so until I get mine, I'll work me the whole day through.

I also love the last line of Golden:
"You'll be right here forever,
We'll go through this thing together.
And on heaven's golden shore we'll lay our heads"

Such sweet, sweet words...the epitome of eternal love.

Oh shit run, oh

Put in more than you could ever get out
I'm tired of the talking, I know what you're about

Is there a doctor in the house tonight?
If there's a wrong, he could make it right
Is there still a lock on your back door?
Is there still a lock on your back door?
Tell me I'm wrong
Tell me I'm right
Tell me there's nobody else in the world

There's still time for you to change your mind
Or whatever else you do, there's still time, oh oh

Yeah I hope we meet up at a Jacket show someday because I like you already! Where To Begin is the song for me. If it comes up on my shuffle, it takes about 6 or 7 plays before I can move on...

Some lyrics blow me away more than others. Lately I've been soaking up Rollin' Back as a sort of melancholy anthem for love and life and it reminds me of certain people who have drifted into my life and back out too quickly.

when I think about the story one thing seems pretty clear
the warm things you left behind they still want you here

And these lines deliver in so many ways

oh i'll never say I knew you
but my heart cant wait
to meet you no the other side.

This answer seems to change for me every now and then.  Current obsessions:

there's still time for you
to change your mind or whatever else you do
there's still time.

the fact that my heart's beating
is all the proof you need

don't let your silly dreams fall in between
the crack of the bed and the wall

oh i'll never say I knew you
but my heart cant wait
to meet you no the other side

Ditto, kydiddle!

Though, I find that to be the case with several songs.   My latest obsessions is the oldie but goodie is The Bear AND the recent Moving Away.  I just can't seem to get enough of them.

Then, there's always Steam Engine, Don Donte, Look at You, I Will Sing You Songs, It Beats For You, Phone Went West, Evelyn, so on and so forth.  It's a constant rotation of finding new and exciting meaning and musical intricacies in each song and falling in love with them all over again.

Oh yeah, I got the Jacket Fever.  Love it!

I'm bored, here's my expansion:

"don't rock bottom, just listen, just slow down" - mageetah
"your brain melts in the twilight" - steam engine
"the feeling taking over, like a holy roller coaster to the grave" - where to begin
"It wasn't till I woke up... That I could hold down a joke or a job or a dream. But then all three are one in the same" - one in the same
"why does my mind blow to bits every time they play that song" - the way that he sings
"my heart can't wait to meet ya on the other side" - Rollin back
"all that ever mattered will some day turn back to batter like a joke" dondante
"she said boy you better learn to express yourself" - anytime
"you can't get yours if ya ain't getting his" and "how you react is what you get back" - you wanna freak out (both remind me of every girl I've ever dated - clingy)
"I was born in east Ky, home of where the grass is died" - I will be there when you die

I Will Be There When You Die: the title alone caught my eye way back when my father was first diagnosed with a very rare and incurable form of small intestinal cancer. It just spoke to me in a way that suggested loyalty and faithfullness. It was the one promise I made to my dad who had been dead for over six years now. I don't listen to the song very often because even now it is just too hard to listen to. But that was the one thing I was proud of, my dad wasn't alone at his last moment. I was there when he died. That is probably one of the most profound lyrics in any song I've ever heard because really what else is there? What else can you do for the one you love but be there at their scariest, most painful moment as they pass away from this world.

Fully, I share your sentiments.  Though the song came out after my Dad passed from colon cancer, it rings so true today.  My Dad passed surrounded by his children and though he had struggled with his ultimate fate (the body giving out, not the mind), he was finally at peace when life left his body because we were with him and he realized we would be ok.  I am so grateful to have been there and I can't thank MMJ enough for the song.  It has so much meaning to me.  Somehow, I seem to embrace the pain because it means he is still so close to me.  Does that make sense?  Hugs to you!

thanks for sharing....

I will be there when you die is the first MMJ song I heard. I remember sitting at my computer, not even sure how I found out it but my friend Cube kept telling me that I should listen to them. I kept playing it OVER and OVER and turning it up, thinking is this the loudest this gets? I was hooked. Completely. So raw..

i was away with my folks on a cruise last wk (they took all the kids to help celebrate their 50th anniversary).  I was relaxing on a lounge w my headphones on listening to some acoustic mmj and my dad taps me and says he would like to hear some mmj since i'm always rushing off to see them.
played him wonderful, IWBTWYD, Golden and Hopefully figuring he would like the mellow stuff.  He loved it, especially Wonderful and I Will Be There ...
My dad's best friend of 55 yrs has been very sick and just passed away yesterday.  We have the funeral tomorrow.  My mom and dad were in the hospital with him and his wife yesterday when he passed.
My dad will be eulogizing his friend tomorrow and when we spoke last night, he mentioned the song to me.
That song get's me every time.

I understand exactly what you mean by that statement. I really don't want to let the pain go because it is the one thing I have left that proves my love for him. I don't sit around crying over him, but I never stop missing him. It is rare day that I don't think about him, and I'm sad that my girls don't get to have their grandfather (the best of all of their grandparents) in their life. They were too young when he died to really remember him. The other thing about that song is that it is just so beautiful to listen to. It doesn't really seem like it was written about losing someone. It seems more like it was written as a statement of long lasting love to a companion; however, it works perfectly as a song about grief.

The way Jim sings this line kills me, but in a beautiful way.

"That I could hold down a joke or a job or a dream
But then all three are one in the same"
-One in the Same

And, of course, the poignantly simple, aching chorus of the song that first got me into My Morning Jacket...
"Tell me I'm wrong, tell me I'm right.
Tell me there's nobody else in the world."
-Phone Went West

All alone at the end of  the day
Really tired it's time to hit the hay
It was always good to hear you say
Never were a drawback
Always were an asset
Never were a drawback no you weren't

All alone at the end of  the day
Really tired it's time to hit the hay
It was always good to hear you say
Never were a drawback
Yeah you always were an asset
Never were a drawback no you weren't

Put away your corset
Put away your shoe
Put away the Old September Blues

The most moving of all, IMO

Some random favorites of mine (not the deepest of MMJ's lyrics ;D):

"In my blood there's gasoline"

"I'm hooked on 4, like 1, 2, 3"

"A good showerhead and my right hand, the 2 best lovers that I've ever had"
