What do you guys think are MMJ's most underrated/underappreciated songs? I'd go with Rollin Back, Sec Walkin, and Honest Man.
I don't know if it's Underrated/Underappreciated among the Jacketeers, but outside of the fans I feel like people never understand Highly Suspicious and I love that song so much. :)
How about "Weeks Go By Like Days" or "Downtown"...two of my favorites from the Ch.1 album.
Knot Comes Loose....I've always felt it didn't get the 'spect it deserves
I Needed It Most or One In The Same IMO.
I think their songs that rock more are more widely appreciated, but if I were to pick a couple of those it would be Masterplan and Just Because I Do

i agree
war begun's an outstanding tune as well

I agree! I love that song, and guess what...Jim James wrote it! Unfortunately tho, I think it's more appreciated by the outsiders than it is by a lot of the folks on here. :-/

Absolutely. Both of those songs are some of my favourites. I'd add Lil Billy to that aswell.

Hm, how weird, it will always be one of my favorites, not to mention the VHS or Beta Dee Jays remix, which is awesome! Good stuff :D
Rollin' Back, for me. Hard to say about underrated across the fan base, but this is definitely one that I personally underappreciated for a few years. Now, I just love singing along .... the verses so slow, laid back, word by word- and then the building chorus "you had me wrapped up...." through "when the light vanished...." and then back to a mellow "my heart can't wait to meet you on the other side".
Just brilliant IMO.
rollin' back is such a good song. it was one of the first songs by MMJ that really HIT me. it still moves was my first jacket album that i purchased in 2003, but never really listened to much, other than golden or one big holiday, then sometime in 2004 rediscovered it, and really got "wrapped up in its mystery." since then there's been no looking back, and i'd say rollin' back was a big reason for that.
also - just because i do is an awesome song that never gets played anymore. i can't wait to hear the tapings from the NYC run to see how they reinvent this one with carl and bo in the fold. i don't think that they have played it since the lineup change (but i could be wrong).
It Beats 4 U is underrated as fuck.
I would go with Remnants. It goes to 11.
Remnants, Just Because I Do, How Could I Know.
I love Remnants. I think the only live recording I have of it is Montreal on EU tour. Anyone else have better recording of it? It's what I'm most looking forward to for EU night.
Just One Thing, I Will Sing You Songs
I Will Sing You Songs -- the end on the album cut is so nice, where Jim sings "we ready..." or whatever he is saying. Man I lose my shit every time I listen to that. Sounds beautiful in the twilight.
I agree with Sticky, It Beats for You is awesome. X-Mas Curtain, O is the One That is Real and Aluminum Park.

Hands down their most underrated song on the Z album - everytime that acoustic guitar kicks in at the end my head damn near explodes.
Ruckus: FUCK REMNANTS. that song blows. goes to 11 my ass. but who knows, i'm still excited to see it live in NYC - maybe it will change my opinion of the song, just like They Ran (an underrated song for sure) became my favorite MMJ song after hearing it live NYE 2008. before that I didn't care that much for They Ran.
Where To Begin is one of the best songs ever written and sadly barely no one has ever heard it.

I got nothin' Funky. BUT, a lot more peeps have heard WTB than Remnants. EDIT: As aLady points out, this is incorrect.
This is the thing. People keep talking about underrated songs. I don't think Jacket fans "underrate songs."
The only thing that makes a song underrated is the amount of times it is played live to the fans. SO, Where To Begin, IWSYS, IB4U don't count because they are played enough. Now Remnants on the other hand....
EDIT: WTB is in my top 5 songs
Is that true? I feel like I've heard Remnants more than Where to Begin. I've only heard WtB once or twice.
It seems to be more underrated here than in the mind of Jim, but every time I hear Tonight I Want To Celebrate With You, a big grin comes across my face.

If you look closely at the Charleston DVD, a big smile comes to Jim's face as he open with TIWTCWY. Its a common reaction.
I actually learned the opening notes on my Omnichord from watching that performance. Before then, I was elsewhere on the chords.
Highlights of that song include, of course, the prominent laser harp AND Carl's ethereal pedal steel AND Patrick's steady beats.

You're right Lady. Thanks for the heads up. Apparently WTB begin has only been played 11 times according to the setlist archive, the same as Remnants. I guess my thought process was a little skewed by the fact that WTB was played 2x on the last tour while Remnants wasn't and that we have stuff like Acoustic Chorale and Celebracion. Must be nice to have seen both. I've seen neither. [smiley=thumbdown.gif]
Well, I'm in the poorhouse as an indirect result of seeing both songs, but I dunno if that makes you feel any better. ;D
I'm really glad WtB has been making a comeback, though. I heard it for the first time ever at Louisville '08...never even heard of it before that (hadn't seen Elizabethtown).
I am REALLY looking forward to hearing WTB in NY - one of my personal favorites and I have never heard it live. I wonder which night it'll fall on? (too lazy to look up what year it was)
Nothing 2 me
I won't cry.

Ooooh, love that song, lovelovelove [ch9829]!
:)
Come Closer is way underrated and way way way underplayed.

Indeed, especially the Christmas version... ;)

I really love the vocal layering on the song. It's really thick and well crafted. solid stuff. very psychedelic for such a mellow tune.
Remnants and Honest Man. Hands Down!
Can You See the Hard Helmet on my Head !!!
I already answered earlier, but I just listened to Remants for the first time in a year. That is the definite answer to the question. I would gladly exchange this for Highly Suspicious anytime.

Yup, probably in my top 5. I love it!
