My sister isn't a huge jacket fan, though I try, she just doesn't care too much about music. However, she just texted me and said "I think we're gonna use Thank You Too! for our wedding song, is that appropriate?" I said they have some better love songs, such as Tonight IWCWY. Any others anyone can think of? Rolling Back would be best imo, but shes worried more about the lyrics. suggestions I can pass on? She brought it up, so I'm really pushing mmj for her wedding songs now.
this list begins and ends with one song...
just one thing
but im sure amd will disagree.
I like Hopefully as a love song.
i suggest just one thing, hopefully sounds more like a relationship on the rocks to me. my final decision for the number one suggestion was Knot Comes Loose
Of course I do! ;)
I would stick with the tracks from Louisville is for Lovers especially their breathtaking version of Take My Breath Away. Sweetheart is a good straight-forward love song. Knot Comes Loose. My wife sang I Will Be There When You Die to me at our wedding reception.
damn that was fast.
sarah talked about how effin awesome that was. every time i hear that song i think of yor wife...
the outcome of all this is going to be my sister ultimately deciding against MMJ all together, but a mix filled with love songs will probably be the gate way into jacketdom for her, so keep em coming if anyone else has any more ideas.
No Steam Engine? If not because it's one of the best songs ever, then because of this JJ quote:
"It's about a lot of things. There's a line where I say, "I believe none of this is physical." It is kind of a reaction to, in today's world, so much being based on the physical. So much is based on people's appearance and fashion. So many bands seem like they're a part of a fashion show and they don't even give a shit about their music. It's about loving a song because of the way it makes you feel, not because the people playing it are wearing duck costumes or because there's 30 people on stage. It's about falling in love with someone because of the way they make you feel, as opposed to them wearing tight jeans and being hot. I'm just trying to escape from the fuckin' constant, physically driven fashion show that the world has become."
I think most MMJ songs are about love in some way, but I suppose not all the contexts fit a wedding. Otherwise I'd definitely agree with Hopefully, which is such a lovely song. [ch9829] I will be there when you die is a good one as well, preferably the 2 meter session version and Sweetheart is also so, so sweet :)
Not sure if these would count, but:
Wonderful the way I feel
Make it with you (BBC studios version, I know it's a cover, but it's such a beautiful version)
:)
Come Closer
It Beats 4 U
Wordless Chorus
Anytime
Touch Me 2
I will sing you the songs (the music reminds me of just being spent and in so totally in love)
If it was my wedding, I would have One Big Holiday blaring out ; )
Cute thread.
Hey SaraBBear, where's that quote from?
If she's really not into MMJ or music, I wouldn't push it, you know? Stick with Thank You then assault her with love songs (and all the others) when she returns from the honey moon. Thank You is innocuous and she'll start her love for MMJ on the foundation that it was played at her wedding. I can't think of anyone who plays a song they don't really know at their wedding.
Unless you suggest I Think I'm Going to Hell... :-/

It's from a 2003 Nude as the News interview, I would post the link, but it seems the site is having some problems atm, so the link doesn't work. I'll check again later and post it if it works then :)

agree about people playing music they dont know at their wedding. its dumb, but my sister is dumb too. i think it has more to do with her boyfriend the fact that he is starting to get into jacket now. I'm buying them tickets to the hometown show instead of something they registered for.
knot comes loose is a nice slow one
I'm getting married next fall and my fiancee and I are huge jacket fans. I have been mulling what's appropriate to use during the reception and I have been trying to convince her that "Look At You," maybe an appropriate song for us. It's not my favorite in the jacket canon but the combo of the pedal steel, YY voice and the lyrics (although possibly not about love) I think are beautiful and works in this setting. Otherwise we will most likely be using "Tonight I Want to Celebrate with You" to lead things off and "Wordless Chorus" is a favorite among my friends. Wondering what others suggest as well?

Agreed, but there are some very powerful lyrics to those who choose to hear them on a relationship level. Golden struck home with my wife & I the very 1st time we heard it. It may be the song which made us fans (errr....all of ISM truth be told). It also happenes to be our wedding song so perhaps I'm a bit partial to Golden :)

You, you always told me, no matter how long it holds me. If it falls apart or makes us millionares. You'll be right here forever...go thru this thing together...
is certainly a love song.

I agree that Golden is a love song, of sorts. I'm torn between interpreting the lyrics as about a relationship to someone who keeps him grounded while out on the road OR a love song to fans for making the experience of being a touring band special. So, its either a love song to a special lady or its Jim appreciating me! Either way, its all good.

Couldn't have said it any better. I definitely think Golden has a dual meaning

Most def.
Add "and on heavens golden shore we'll lay our heads" and it reminds me of the day my best friends father passed away. We were driving listening to Golden so loud and I just held her hand. I looked at her during the last verse and saw tears streaming down her face as she was staring out the window. I wont ever forget that moment.
Back to the love....this thread already exists somewhere, but I'm too lazy to look for it.
I think of Lowdown as a sort of love song.
My interpretion (could be completely wrong), is that there's a woman debating between two men, the one she's with, who's a dirtbag, abuser, rocky relationship, etc... and the singer, who's the typical "nice guy". And the singer is trying to talk the woman into giving up the drama and joining him by promising how good he'll be to her. Kinda the role I played in high school - LOL -'cept the ladies never bought into my argument.

i think this makes the most sense. i would say he's either talking about a woman, or when he says "we'll go thru this thing together" its just about everyone who has anything to do with his life in a the band. fans, family, bandmates, friends, lovers, etc etc etc.
i'd like to add that Golden is one of my favorite songs by mmj. Golden and Look at You are in the same boat. They we're both just filler songs to me, until I saw them solo/acoustic. now they're both right up top on my list of most beautiful mmj songs.

totally agree with it being good that not too many songs are love songs.
Quote...until I saw them solo/acoustic. now they're both right up top on my list of most beautiful mmj songs.
For me, the solo/acoustic treatment from YY changes my focus from rhythm and beat and epic face meltage to lyrics and emotional purity. Stripped of the lights, the additional instrumentation, and usually hightened tempo, songs are transformed and laid bare. Newport Folk Fest this year was my opportunity to appreciate this in person.
Examples:
Look At You
Tonight I Want to Celebrate With You (Laser Harp!)
It Beats 4 U (love the acoustic treatment, though Patrick is amazing)
What a Wonderful Man (I was wantin' some ice cream!)
Smokin From Shootin
Gideon
Also, check out the solo/acoustic versions from ISM on the Rolling Stone sessions, including Steam Engine and Masterplan. Beautiful!

Rolling Stone sessions are amazing. I saw on of the Appalachian Voices shows. So I got Golden, Gideon, Wonderful, Smokin, Look at You, and Where to Begin. Then last night at the coal ash disposal ralley I saw Look at You again. At one MMJ show Jim played Bermuda Highway solo. Though I would rather see MMJ as a whole, the Appalachian Voices was really a special night. The songs unplugged are just beautiful. Basically I agree with everything you just said. Also my two favorite recordings that get the most play in my car are Newport Folk '08 and '10. I have made a pact with myself that next time he plays Newport Folk I WILL be there.

Lowdown from 03.17.2001 is un-fucking-believable! ;)

i dunno, different people hear different things in songs. not meaning they don't know the lyrics, just that interpretation of the lyrics can vary (see previous replies).
a cd of various mmj could be love songs may be a good way to go about it. that way she can decide if any feel right & if they're dance-able etc.
i've always thought of lowdown & knot comes loose as straight forward love songs. hopefully, too, but more of an "i'm sorry & i love you" love song.
if it's any consolation - my boss's husband wanted whipping post (almans) so, compared to that there are many mmj songs that would be muuuuch nicer.

i would have to go with steam engine...
rolling stone sessions:
after hearing this version and absorbing the way jim sings it,
sent chills of love up my spine, still does, everytime i hear it...
Not to toot my own horn (wow, that sounds awkward), but check this link to a thread I just put up, with early solo Jim on video doing acoustic Steam Engine and Just One Thing, a romantic double-play!
http://www.mymorningjacket.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1286846984
TIWCWY would be a nice nod to all of the friends and family who are sharing in the moment. Beyond that, Sweetheart or Just One Thing. I'd say "no thank you" to Thank You, as I would not want that song to be the first introduction of mmj to a large group of people (I'm guessin that's not a factor in the selection criteria though-ha).
sooner or later, i will come and see you and feel your power in the early sun...
come closer...
babe, there's just one thing. one thing that does... does it for me...
hopefully it occurs to me that there's one thing i can't stand... that's that thought of one single day that your head in my hand...
sweetheart, lover, I wanted you before,
but when the heart beats next to me I want it even more.
so many more...
