Title: Bonnaroo Review
Post by: sparky on Jun 14, 2004, 11:53 AM
The clouds and wind rolled in.  Cobra, At Dawn, the green trees blowing behind the stage.  All that hair, and reverb and incoming storm (of great fucking magnitude) was a great exclamation to the end of an awesome set.  Fourth one for me, never not blown away.  They seemed really pleased when they looked out and saw what was coming.  Kinda like "And this will be the capper to a set they'll definately remember now"  Other good ones included new Wilco lineup and new songs that rocked, Grandaddy's electric space orchestra (my favorite), and the layered Morriconeism's of predominately Feast of Wire Calexico.  Played with MMJ back in Jan. have talked about doing it again and can't wait.  What motivation they put out.  Check out my band, The Hellsayers, @ www.goodluckcricket.com and listen to the Mp3's.  You might find you like these tunes.  We're playing w/ Chris Robinson Sun. 20th in Asheville.  Come to the show.  Hope some of you were there for that spectacle @ Bonnaroo.  Jonas

I love your review so much that I'm actually thinking about checking out your band.  :o

I think the vision of My Morning Jacket rocking out with a storm rolling in behind thier stage might be the most beutiful thing I've ever imagined.  I wish I could have been there, Oh Well, I'll be seeing them Wednesday in Atlanta............I'll be the storm rocking out in front of Jim's monitor.

Hey...I was there as well. Their set was nothing short of heavenly. The sun was oppressive all weekend, making it almost impossible to move at times. MMJ came on and opened with Mageetah and then went right into One Big Holiday. Jim James' voice was CD quality...I was so impressed b/c I'd never seen them before (though I've love them for a while). During either Cobra or At Dawn the clouds and wind blew in all of a sudden. Then during Steam Engine, HUGE raindrops started to fall. The bonnaroo banners were coming close to being torn off...then just as the transition to the second half of Steam Engine came on (take your money and your drugs...) the skies OPENED UP. The crowd roared and Jimmy James seemed energized by it, standing out at the front edge of the stage and just wailing out the lyrics. The vision is burned into my mind.

Hey all,
just joined the board because I saw the bonnaroo show and my mind was blown. 2nd time seeing MMJ and the first time was great but with the bonnaroo set it all just clicked. Musical bliss man one of my favorite shows of the weekend, and has earned MMJ a place as one of my current favorite bands. Wherever they play it shouldn't be missed. Pure magic at the 'roo. Also those pictures don't even come close to the feeling of being there. You mean to tell me nobody clicked a picture of Jim hugging his guitar while the wind was blowing in? Good stuff... anyway just wanted to throw my 2 cents in.

Hi--I've got a couple pics you may like.  I don't know how to post them here, but if you email me I can send them to you.  I've got a great one from the end of the set where Jim is holding his Flying V like he's praying to the speakers, and one of him hugging the guitar.  Amazing show, definitely my Bonnaroo highlight.

from popmatters:

Kentuckians My Morning Jacket took the Which Stage by storm and emerged as one of the highlights of the festival. Lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jim James came out barefoot, his face completely obscured by the Captain Caveman hair he sported. When they got to serious jamming, it was like watching electrified Fraggles make music -- one assumed on instruments concealed beneath the competing tangles of flailing hair. If they are a jam band, it's in the vein of Brian Wilson, as sung by Neil Young -- lush pop orchestrations, grinding western guitar landscapes and James' wistful, echoed vocals expressing the raw emotions that made both Young and Wilson so worthy of our love and empathy. Many songs would even fit snugly alongside anything by the Band, but My Morning Jacket sounds as modern as any critic would have you believe is necessary to avoid the pitfalls of retro-ism.
