Title: Who has got tix for the Birmingham show?
Post by: erter99 on Apr 09, 2005, 07:40 AM
Hey to all,

Can't tell you how excited I am about the upcoming pre-Bonnaroo tour.  I'll be heading down to the Birmingham show from Nashville.  I was about to lose it when I saw that they were starting things off so near.

On a (somewhat) related note, I ran into most of the band back in February at the Station Inn seeing Gillian Welch/David Rawlings.  I talked to Carl for a while, but I couldn't muster the nerve to say HEY to Jim.  I nearly lost it when he walked in the room (the venue seats about 200 ... very small).

Anyway, here's to hoping that they hit Nashville, as well.  Anyone else making the trip to 'Bama?

Jay

You know, I should have my mini-disc recorder by then.  (Stupid ebay stupid taking forEVER stupid American border not liking my postal code, apparently.)  I have to bring it anyways, so maybe I could do it?  (No idea how, but I bet YOU do...  have you got a good mic?  I have a crap one.)

How do we do that?  Who do we have to ask?  Do you think we could plug it straight into their board?  They have their own sound guy, right?

So many questions.  Anyhow, that's a possibility...

Really?  Hm.  Maybe.  Those guys're always mad about something.  (Perhaps even rightfully so...)  I don't know.  If it doesn't come soon, we shall have to take some measures.

Somehow I didn't hear about this show till Friday. I bought tickets immediately. I haven't seen MMJ since Lebowski Fest last year and I can't wait.

Has anyone been to Sloss Furnace before? I've been there twice and it's pretty freaking sweet. I'll post some pics if anyone is interested.

You know, somehow, I just knew that this website was gonna pay off one day.  I'll be in Birmingham by that time, and I think I'll take my wife to see the Jacket (seeing as how she didn't get to see 'em in Atlanta last year when I went).  My problem is I don't have an address in Birmingham for them to mail the tickets to yet.  I didn't notice a "will call" choice on Ticketmaster's website.  What the hell am I gonna do?
Title: Re: Who has got tix for the Birmingham show?
Post by: EC on Apr 25, 2005, 01:07 PM
I was JUST about to come here and see if you were gonna go.

Do what I did - pay for the tickets over the phone, and pick them up on the night of the concert.  I couldn't order US tix from Canada, so I had to call, and rather than risking them not arriving until I leave, I just said to have them waiting for me at the door.

Whoop!

I know Ticketmaster (always reminds me of Dungeonmaster) still has tickets available; but as to whether Sloss Furnace allows pickup?  Who knows?  I may just have to get TM to mail them to my sister's house in Pelham, and I'll get them from her.  By the way, how can we identify each other at the show?  We can all hang out and drink way too much beer.
Title: Re: Who has got tix for the Birmingham show?

It looks like you'll have to do TicketFast and print them out. It costs extra but it's very convenient.

Thanks to the archiving capabilities of Gmail, I have some pics here at my office. I thought I was gonna have to wait till later to post these:

That's OAR performing. Not my favorite band but it was a lot of fun.

Hm.  This now sucks.  Hmmmmm.  Can anybody in 'bama call the Sloss and ask them if tickets purchased from TM can be picked up at the door?  TM says yes, but maybe this is a mix-up?

Drunkre, I have big red hair.  I'll be with wiggum, wiggum's wife and my best friend (who also has red hair but it's much much smaller).  I don't know the area, so I can't say a place to meet - but 'wiggum might know a close-by bar...

Or we could make up a secret signal so that we know that someone's from the board, so's not to cause a situation like this:
"Hey man, are you EC?"
"What?"
"Are you EC?"
"What is an EC?"
"You know, from the internet.  Eh?"
"What the hell are you talking about, get away from me."

We could have a little secret spy move, like the touching of the nose, but using the three middle fingers (kind of like an 'm').  It could be very inconspicuous, but we would know.

I realize that nobody else will probably want to do the secret spy move.  Which is fine.
Title: Re: Who has got tix for the Birmingham show?
Post by: Drunkre on Apr 25, 2005, 01:22 PM
No, no.  I'm diggin' the secret spy thing.  Has everyone seen the TV show Twin Peaks?  We could stroke the left side of our face with our index fingers, just like the Sheriff's "secret society."  What was their name?  It's been years.  Something like the Backroom Boys.
Title: Re: Who has got tix for the Birmingham show?
Post by: EC on Apr 25, 2005, 01:40 PM
GOOD NEWS!  There IS a will call window at Sloss Furnace - TicketMaster just confirmed for me.  He double-checked, too.  :)  So you can do that, drunkre.

And I'm so fucking psyched that you want to do the spy move.  I'm going to let you decide what it is, just let me know.  And we shall be smoooooth.  :)

Just got back to this thread... looks like you got it taken care of, EC!  :)

I've met people at shows before by letting them know in advance what kind of shirt that I would be wearing. Also, picking a spot by the soundboard is usually pretty easy as well.
I have e-mailed Jim to see if it would be OK to bring a video camera, but I haven't heard back from him yet. If I get the greenlight, I'll be the guy with a video camera...  :)

Okay, plus I'm gonna be wearing the same worn-out-ass cowboy hat that I was wearing to the Atlanta show.  So, have you seen Twin Peaks?  If not, have you seen the movie "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me"?

I used to watch Twin Peaks a bit until my Mom found me watching it, and then I wasn't allowed.  I never did see the movie, although I read the diary.  So I don't know what the signal is from that, but I do know how to scratch my face.  Now I just can't remember if the index finger is your "pointer" finger or your bird finger...

I have no idea what I'll be wearing.  Probably whatever is still clean at that point, if anything...

Sloss Furnace is close to downtown B'ham but it's still pretty isolated. The parking lot is field-like and very conducive to tailgating. I would recommend just meeting there. You could probably even grill out or just pack a picnic. Sloss also has a pretty big grassy area outside of the actual structure where the band plays.
Title: Re: Who has got tix for the Birmingham show?
Post by: Drunkre on Apr 26, 2005, 06:57 AM
That actually sounds good.  Parking lots are a lot less crowded in general.  I don't know about tailgating or anything (I don't have a truck); plus grilling out would be odd (I'm vegetarian).  But meeting in the parking lot is cool.  We'll stay in touch up till the concert.

I'm down with whatever.  If anybody can recommend a cheap, nearby hotel or campsite area, that would be rad.

Damn.  The more everybody talks about this place, the more special it seems.  I bet it'll be very vibey.

Hey, if it's open air, does that mean we can smoke?

Wait, can you smoke in bars in the South?
Title: Re: Who has got tix for the Birmingham show?
Post by: Drunkre on Apr 26, 2005, 10:53 AM
There's a few places down here where they've banned smoking. But you can pretty much smoke just about anywhere in the South.  Not only did I smoke, but I snuffed cigarettes out on the floor of the Coca Cola Theater in Atlanta (take that corporate swine!)
Title: Re: Who has got tix for the Birmingham show?
Post by: WillCo on Apr 26, 2005, 11:21 AM
As far as I know you can smoke at bars in B'ham. I'm sure you can at Sloss. Sloss really is about the coolest venue I've been to. There's nothing else like it.

I found this page through a Google image search. The place where the band plays is (I think) on the right on the 6th row down and in the middle of the 8th row. It looks like a gravel floor in those pics but that's not how it is anymore. You can see it from the outside in other pics. It's the long gray metal building.

I don't see why you couldn't.  It's like a state park kind of deal.  Sort of like the Vulcan statue.  But what with the concert later that night and shee-ahht, they might have the place locked down for soundchecks and setting up.

True. ÊI hadn't thought of that. ÊHm. Ê
I certainly would NOT want to create any weirdness with security, or distract anybody from their rock 'n roll set up.

It looks like you can tour the actual furnace part during the day. The last time I went to a concert, the gates didn't open for that section of the grounds until about 6:00, I think.

Here's some info about the tour:

Did I not mention the Sloss/Counting Crows story here before?
A buddy and I went to BHam a couple of years ago to see the Counting Crows at Sloss. We got to town early so that we could get a burger at the Purple Onion (that's a damn fine burger!). We got bored and decided that we would drive on over to Sloss to see what was going on over there. We thought that maybe we could hear the soundcheck from outside of the gates.

Well, I don't remember specific times, but we were there roughly 3 hours before the concert started. It was still daylight and we could hear some noises when we got out of the car. They were apparently getting the levels on the snare drum. We then decided to go closer to the gate and the damn thing was standing wide open. We decided that we would try to walk in and see if anyone would give us any hell.

Not one person bothered to ask us for credentials or a ticket. So we get to the back of the venue/concrete slope. We're back by the soundboard at this point. You can see of the Crows onstage either tuning or messing with their instruments while the soundguy gets the levels on the rest of the drums. Once the drummer is done, the band started playing a song that i hadn't heard before. This was back a month or so before Hard Candy was released.

Anyway, they played the same song again and then went through 2 more of the new songs. No one bothered us the whole time. We didn't go past the soundboard because we were SURE that someone would ask us to leave, but they never did.

The opening band then came out and did their soundcheck. Once they were done, we decided that we would just hang out until we were asked to go back outside, but they never did. We kept an eye on the front gate and waited for them to open the gates to the public. I'm not sure at what point they locked them. Once they opened them, we made our way to front-row, center and stayed there until the end of the show.

:)

Everyone's seen antoniostrohs avatar, right?  By the way, has anyone else been sucked in by Nickelodeon's Avatar series; it's badass, that's all I can say.  Anyway, back to the topic.  antoniostrohs has, quite possibly, the coolest avatar ever.  I copied into MS Paint, and am currently in the process of turning it into an iron-on patch.  Now, I've seen the movie "PCU," as I'm sure have all of you.  In that movie, the main character tells a guy, "Don't be the guy wearing the band t-shirt to the same band's concert...Don't be that guy."  Dammit, I wanna be that guy.  I mean, this is a cool ass pic.  Pabst Blue Ribbon for God's sakes!!!

In other news, just read this about the BHam show:
QuoteJUNE 3

My Morning Jacket. Stage One: A Benefit for Vines & Waldrep City Stages, with Moses Mayfield (formerly Stewart Mayfield Project) and Eliot Morris. Sloss Furnaces, 32nd Street and First Avenue North, Birmingham. 8 p.m. $15 advance, $20 day of show, plus service charge, available through Ticketmaster.

Here's Moses Mayfield's site: http://www.stewartmayfieldproject.com/
And here's Eliot Morris http://www.eliotmorris.com/

Apparently you have to have an 'm' in your name to play...

I've heard that Eliot Morris is really good. He's playing here in Auburn tonight but it's at a bar that's far too fancy for my standards. It seems like I'd already heard Moses Mayfield was playing. I couldn't remember the name at the time.

I also found out that my girlfriend's roommate's boyfriend (who I'm pretty good friends with) is the stage manager for this show. Fingers crossed for some backstage access.

And from what I read here I wasn't the only one who has been affected and is still concerned about other fans enjoyment.Have as much fun as you want, just be cool to the others around you.Your goodtime can affect someone elses goodtime.Rock on my brother.

Again, how anyone can have an entire show ruined (RUINED!) by some loud drunk guys is way beyond me. Timmy, are you sure you mean that the whole show is ruined?

ycartrob,I don't think Timmy said anything about an entire show being ruined.Think he mostly was talking about the quiet acoustic portion of the show being ruined.I myself and others here just don't like screaming and hollering at inapropriate moments during some the beautiful songs Jim wrote and I'm sure the band doesn't like it too much either. But more power to you if you would rather hear someone screaming request and profanities during Jim  acoustic songs instead of enjoying them as they were meant to be heard.Yell all you want before or after the songs

Antonio, more power to me if I would RATHER hear people shouting and cussing during the acoustic set? My, that's a very far leap from my statment (actually has nothing to do with my statement). I'd much rather have total quiet during the acoustic set (do I really have to say that?), but if someone yells (which they probably will), don't let it RUIN the show, man. I, for one, have NEVER understood why people yell during the obvious quiet times, but it has NEVER, EVER ruined the show for me. Good grief, this ain't the symphony, it's rock and roll. I can imagine Timmy driving to the show (or Antonio) shaking, hoping to God no one RUINS the rock show: "Gee, I hope no one is loud and obnoxious at the rock and roll show tonight..." That doesn't fly in my book (and anyone's book who rocks). Let's pray for silence during the acoustic set and free-for-all rockin' during the rock parts and accept the quality music and don't let ANYTHING ruin a set from one of the greatest hard working bands today! Hail to My Morning Jacket and Viva Birmingham and Viva Athens!!

Can I interject by saying that I think we're all saying the same thing, basically?  Antoniostroh's is just sayin' that people can be drunken shits at inappropriate times.  Obviously nobody's entire time is ruined, but some drunken asshole can seriously get on your nerves.  You know what he's talking ycartrob, come on.  I believe antoniostrohs has seen a helluva lot of rock in his life - he knows how to rock.  We all do.  But, just like in a regular bar situation if you're going to the bar to get a drink and some guy keeps giving you a hard time (for WHATEVER reason), it's a pain in the ass, and it can piss  you off.  Same in a rock show - your concentration can be wrecked if somebody's yelling in your ear, or bangin' into you the whole time.

Anyhow, I think that's all anyone is saying.

ycartrob,I apologize if misinterpreted what you meant.I just assumed by defending it you were also condoning it.We all like to have a good time and like EC said some people just don't like  drunk people yelling or doing inapropriate things during shows. And yes sometimes I do hope before I go to a show that no one is annoying to distract from the show.I just hope for people to respect others and I tend to do the same.It by no means ruins the total show but what the show could have been.I have been to many a shows and have half the audience pay no attention to the band and talk at the bar.To me thats shows lack of respect for the band and for the other fans who came to listen. That's just me and and a few others opinion.Once again I'm sorry if I took your comments out of context.
Peace and Long Live The Jacket

sweet jesus people. ok. sorry i should have said that me and the fellas were planning on having a really good time.  for some reason, everyone starts thinking about how "their time" and the bands show will suffer.  don't be so pretentious and don't assume that bc i'm from MS that all i do is fuck with people and shout loud obscenities all the time.

my good time is usually self contained to my group. i was just using those descriptive words to insinuate how much fun we gonna be having. timmy. like i said don't worry.

jesus.

yeah, a lot of people talkin throughout the show sucks. But MMJ is too fuckin loud for that to matter, except during the slow ones. that's when you take those people out...bottles to the head.

me and my friends will have good time. maybe that's all i needed to say.

dammit!

can we please just rock and roll?

QuoteIt must be so frustrating.   >:(

In other news, just read this about the BHam show:
from http://www.al.com/entertainment/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/base/entertainment/111419373234220.xml

Here's Moses Mayfield's site: http://www.stewartmayfieldproject.com/
And here's Eliot Morris http://www.eliotmorris.com/

Apparently you have to have an 'm' in your name to play...

Not quite, oh well.

this is TOMMORROW!! why are you fuckers not talking about this?? i so cannot wait.. the trip there is going to be fun too.. we already have tons of fun "roadtrip games" to play..

one of my all-time favorites is 'actor movie actor' which consists of someone naming an actor and the next person naming a movie they were in and the next person names a different actor in the same movie and then the pattern keeps on.. this sparks alot of random conversation as well.

I believe there's a window there that you can go to.  That's where I'm meant to pick my tickets up.

Oh.My.Lord.  I am so excited.  We're having soul food for lunch tomorrow.  In Athens, then we're driving to Birmingham (where I've suggested we find a good barbeque).  And Brian and Drunkre, you'd better git those cell phones on!!

 ;D

can you believe it? this is great.. it's kinda like the quiet before the storm that is the pre-bonnaroo and bonnaroo shows. i just can't wait to see my brother's reaction after he sees them live and in color. him and my other friend just dont understand me when i try to describe it but they soon will. they love mmj but they dont know what they're in store for. i shall spend the 5 hour drive back home that night with a few new mmj junkies.

my roadtrip CD:

1. Cobra (gotta have the long ass album version for the road)
2. Death is the Easy Way (with M. Ward at Toronto)
3. The Man in Me (Bob Dylan cover at Lebowski Fest)
4. Tyrone
5. They Ran (acoustic)
6. Bermuda Highway
7. Just Because I Do
8. Lowdown (live at bonnaroo)
9. Nashville to Kentucky (in this case it should be Nashville to B-ham)
10. Uno Grande Holiday (bonnaroo)
11. I Will Sing You Songs (a really long live version cant remember when or where it was recorded)

I think I'm gonna have to use two cds.. dammit Cobra takes up half of the cd.
