I'm wondering more about the MMJ fan reaction to Wilco, and the crowd's reaction to MMJ. These are two very good bands at the height of their powers and I'm interested in comments from both camps. I'm sure there's some strong partiality both ways, but seeing Wilco for the first time last month was the best show I've seen this year, and I've seen some good ones already.

tomorrow night will be my first time seeing both bands live

i'm a huge mmj fan, but haven't had the opportunity to see them yet, i'm ecstatic, i hope they play as long as they can

i like wilco a lot too, but not as much as mmj, i've heard good things about their shows though, so i'm hoping to have a great night

what a double bill though, seriously

So I've read that they started playing at exactly 7 pm yesterday. They only played 45 minutes and a lot of people were not even in the venue yet :P. It was to be expected though.
Here's wilco's setlist for those that are interested, seems delivered the rock again, but only one one summerteeth track, that's kinda weird.

any note on about how many hours wilco played...i'm driving from far away, that setlist looks pretty long and i'm not one to leave before a show is totally over

my guess; about two hours, two hours fifteen?

on the wilco boards, it said the venue at detroit was only 10% full while MMJ was on stage.....looks like i'm going to be very close for 45 minutes

Yep MMJ came on right at 7 pm, and played for exactly 45 minutes.  Great tight set. I heard from lots of people around me things like "hey these guys are really good!", and I agree.  When 7 came around, lots of people still hadn't showed up yet - like the VAST majority of people - so unfortunately many missed out on really seeing this great double bill.  Don't know how many tapers grabbed their whole set (eventually there were lots of rigs) but the first stand I saw go up was about half way through MMJ's second song.

Unfortunately while I am a bit familiar with all the songs they played, I don't know their titles.  Certainly nothing obscure mind you.

For sure they played "The Way He Sings" & then "One Big Holiday" to finish off their 45 minute set.  I don't know, maybe 7 or 8 songs.

I'm pretty sure two more were Lowdown and Run Thru, but I don't remember the order.

06 One Big Holiday

note: doors were at 7:00, only the show started at 7:10 - thats why I missed the first song and a half.  You can also hear me put on my windscreens between It Beates For You and Lowdown.  On One Big Holiday a mic stand micing the amp fell over, the sound is only effected for a second or two.

Thanks for the pictures.  It must be weird for the Jacket playing for such great fans at Bonnaroo and then a week later playing for a less than full house at 7pm.

You know it's funny when you look at those pictures--there are actually people hamming it up and being completely disinterested while the Jacket is playing.  That seems completely unbelievable.

Not to talk trash on Wilco fans (as Wilco is my other favorite band)--but, there are a fair share of snobby Wilco fans who think that the opening band always sucks.  At least that has been the case at the 4 or 5 previous Wilco shows that I have been to (going back to 2000).

It's just rough seeing pictures of the Jacket playing to a somewhat disinterested crowd with the stage lights on.

moose, you wrote the thoughts in my head.

But maybe that's just us projecting onto them.  They might appreciate this time to just play, and maybe,  musically, the shows were really tight for them, so that might always feel like an accomplishment.

Anyhow, I hope they know how much love and support they get even from all of us who can't be there.  Those of us who think they're the best band in the world. :)

That's a great point EC.  I think they know how much love their getting from all of us.  Still, it's just so hard looking at those pictures.  Like you said, maybee they can take some positives out of the experience.

I guess it is just a thrill being on the same bill with Wilco.  I think Two Tone just said that in a recent interview--"Wilco is on the short list of bands we would like to play with" or something to that extent.  So hopefully they can take away some positives.

That kind of stuff always happens. It's nice when you are in the know. Low opened for Radiohead (AWESOME!!!) at MSG last year, same thing about 10 percent of the audience. As well as the Kings of Leon opening for U2 about a month ago at the Garden. Their loss!

I was at the show to.
I was dissapointed that so few showed up to see the jacket but they put on a great show regardless.  It seemed to take a couple songs for them to warm up but when they did it was gold.  The new songs sounded great, i don't know what it was called but the last one blew my mind.  Fantastic set, only wish it was longer, only 45 mins they could have easily done an hour.  And as usual being the opening band the house system was not turned up loud enough but the boys overcam it with their showmanship.
And Wilco was amazing as always.
Can't wait till wednesday to see them both againg in Buffalo!
I still can't believe that my two favourite bands are touring together... and i get to see them twice!
Is the show up to download yet?

Kymoose, ALL bands have idiots or snobs who are fans. There were some MMJ fans actually booing Parker Lily in Athens. It happens. Not really sure how you derive from those pictures how the fans in the front are "disinterested and hamming it up". That's a stretch.

From the Wilco site

Show Notes:
~Seasonal ticketholders occupied Orchestra Pit seats and front rows. Thus, not many actual fans actually got close to the stage; instead, foreign 'fans' greet Wilco

there were a few serious fans up front, but for the most part, i would agree that a lot of the pit seats were taken up by people who didn't (or barely) had a clue...i mean, how many serious fans don't even know monday? :hmm

The last thing I want to do is start some kind of a debate over whether or not the fans were interested at a show I didn't even attend.

If you look at the pictures there are people in the front not giving a shit.  It doesn't matter--it's just a bit amusing when you compare that crowd to the crowd at Bonarroo.  No worries dude.

in response to the fans.  mmj took the stage when half the audience wasn't even there yet.  the ticket said doors at 7, most people were still out tailgating and whatnot.  what concert starts 10 minutes after doors - none.  it was a shock to everyone.  i just don't think people were ready to rock yet.

Just checked them out. I see what you mean. Weird to see people so close the band and not getting it. Bizarre. I mean, even if you weren't a fan it would be hard not to even notice them.

In my experiences with these kinds of outdoor summer amphitheatre shows the shows actually start the time they say they will unlike most club or theatre shows.  Don't know why but thats what seems to happen.  It said on my ticket, the show starts at 7:00 so we got there well before 7, and MMJ went on at 7.
I don't think that most people just missed the start i think most people were just there to see wilco and couldn't care less about MMJ.  Sad but true...
Personally i love them both and didn't want to miss a second of either of them!
Oh and if i had known no one was going to come in during MMJs set my friends and i would have went right down front to show some support, but that means nothing in hindsight...

We drove about 8 hours to see this show, it did not disappoint.... Except for the fact that yes, MMJ only played a very short set.  Almost no one was there when MMJ took the stage, we felt kinda bad for them, but I know they had to have won some new fans from what I saw.  Traffic was horrible getting in on I-75, along with the rain, so that may have been part of the reason for such a small turnout early.  It was still well worth it to see these two bands together.  This was my first time seeing either band, and my final decision is that I must see them both again,  but next time I will make sure MMJ is a headliner so I get more of them...i need more, more, more, I tell you!  MORE.
