My friend just called me after walking out of the show. It was his first show and I think he needs to change his pants. I need a review. Someone please post what the goings on were. A setlist and many an opinion welcome.
-cheers for an amazing tour and that new album???!!!!!
Jim cut his hair!!!
Wow, the show was amazing. I have seen them 5 times, with both line ups and i must say this wasnt their best show. However, many elements knocked me down! man, the band is SOO together. Very very powerfull. You can really tell that they are happy. Their show was full of emotion, but something about it was just like meh. I really think it was b/c jim cut his hair. it was weird!
Set kiss?

It's good to know they seem happy. What is "meh"? I've just read on another thread that the sound quality wasn't great. I've been to a show like that but the power of the band carried it off. Was it full? Were the crowd into it? Sorry about all the questions but I'm keen to know more.
Hey... I made it to the show... I must agree that the sound was a bit sketchy but the guys were so into it... I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed myself, being about ten feet away from stage and dead center. The crowd was not extremely into it, from what I could tell, seemed like half of them were preppy kids looking for something to do... but that could just be from where I was. Didn't hurt me having a good time though... except for all those people moving around in front of me.
tonight's show in athens has got to be better... it sucks to be surrounded by clueless non-fans. and i must see this new haircut... i always want to tell jim, as my mom would say, let me see your pretty face!
I was at the Sloss last night (I was on the right wall, wearing a Captain America t-shirt). This was my first real concert, so I was pretty well wired about it. And yes, there were alot of preppy guys who looked relatively bored throughout the show - but there were all kinds of people there and most of them that I could see were having a good time... and if they weren't, then fuck 'em, I had a great time. I was glad to see the event stretched out to so many different folks.
The show started with Eliot Morris... He was "alright," but after 5 or 6 accoustic love songs in a row, it got pretty lame, so I was ready for him to get off stage.
Up next was Moses Mayfield. What a breath of fresh air after all of that accoustic "love-you" crap. These guys rocked. Highlights of my night with them was when the lead singer/guitarist did a Jimi Hendrix impression chewing on the guitar strings, and I really enjoyed their The Doors cover. Unfortunately they drowned out their sax player - so he might as well have just taken a seat during the whole thing. :(
Finally MMJ took stage... somewhere in the setup, I think the sound got bumped up a few notches, which was not a good idea, because it left all of the vocals scrambled. I swear to god I almost passed out once after one really high note got hit. In hindsight, it would have been funny if the whole crowd passed out at the same instant. :) Anyway, MMJ did great - the only downside of the whole thing was the technical side (the lights got pretty annoying, too).
Can't wait to see MMJ at Bonnaroo.
if you guys were so worried about not having a good time you should have been "in the crunk" like i was at the front center of the stage. sure the audio wasn't as good, and sure the lights may have sucked, and sure there may have been preppy kids who werent into it, but who cares, it's the jacket. me and my friends up front had a good time and that's the bottom line. we convinced some girls to stick around for mmj and they fell in love with them and went and bought 2 of the cds. i absolutely loved hearing the new stuff and especially getting to sing the middle of bermuda highway to jim while he was playing the guitar right over my head. the energy was raw, and i don't think you guys should give the show such a harsh review... the man had sweat pouring off the frets of his guitar.. and the rest weren't exactly playing patty ass either.
okay. the show was "damn good."
For Let there be not anything lesser spoken about this EVENT.
Was the sound bad? I couldn't tell, me and sidekick Miller Lite couldn't tell. However, a friend did mention today that he thought the sound wasn't all that great.
In any case, we all had a great time. I do think the band wasn't hittin on all cylinders, that they do need to find that groove again, it being the first show and all. There were moments when they recaptured the spice plus those moments were numerous, so,I mean, we all felt we got our moneys worth, no doubt. We got our heads rocked, no question.
They threw it down. You wanna know how i know for sure? Because when we left that place, after the Jacket closed up shop by ripping mahgeetah a new asshole, they left us wanting more. Lots more. Case closed.
Mission Accomplished
Heres my setlist. i keep up until bermuda highway. then my pen ran out. the rest is from memory.

magic moment as in that old 50s/60s song "that magic moment, when your lips...." the song that's in sandlot
Yeah. It was "This magic moment". Jim played the omnichord and Bo played the baritone sax. It was great.
New song #2 was "Don Dante" and # 3 was "What a wonderful man".
I was directly in front of Jim with only a 4 foot tall girl in front of me, so there may as well have not been anyone else there because she was never in the way. :)
Yeah, the sound wasn't great, but I don't think it affected the performance in any way. I thought the band was top-notch.

"badass" (new song)
Is that song called badass or was it just badass? Or both?
Is it 'This Magic Moment' as featured in David Lynch' Lost Highway? That would be badass!
For those of you that are curious about the omnichord, check the gallery. Riny has already uploaded the pics that I sent him. (Superfast!)
Ok, I want to write a full review but I'm just way to beat. I just drove like 900 miles and got my ass rocked on two consecutive nights. One of my favorite moments of the show was when Jim tried to get the light guy to turn down the lights for "The Bear". Lights get brighter, Jim, with a chuckle says "Turn The Fucking Lights Off" , then every fucking light in the place comes on, house lights and all. I thought it was really funny and it's moments like this that make live shows special. So many amazing experiecnces on this trip so many amazing people I met and wonderful memories.
that RULES i hope there is a recording of magic moment somewhere!!
I made a recording that I will hopefully put out later this week. I'm not sure if anyone else taped or not.
um "badass" is what i wrote down cuz i didn't/don't know the official name.
and, well, it was my impression of the song at the time and my opinion of it now..."badass"
the people i was with agreed...the song IS "badass"
i'm workin on multiple levels here ya'll, i need a cookie.
yes, magic moment is the old 50's-60's song. So Sweet, so sweet.
I was the really drunk guy in the cowboy hat and white shirt. For the record, the real name of the "badass' song is really"Off the Record".That fucking show rocked out, fuck the sound and preppy ass lames.I was flippin out.I snuck backstage and met the band also,Super nice guys.
yeah, well, i like 'badass'
...but it taint my song to name..
badass
What song is"It Beats For You"???Is that a cover? If not.what is that on?
"It Beat 4" You will most likely be on the new album they started playing it last year, that and "How Could I Know".
So Jim told me they recorded 14 songs and the album will contain ten. We probably know 5 of the ten.
1. It Beats For You
2. How Could I Know
3. Off The Record
4. What A Wonderful Man
5. Don Dante
Can't wait to hear the other five. If they are half as good as these five it's already an amazing album. I'm guessing there is an original on Omnitone that they haven't broken out yet.
Jim also said that they will be realeasing B-sides so hopefully well hear all 14 songs eventually. I'm also guessing that the album will contain a hidden track called "The Pina Colada Song"..........On Omnitone ;D Once again, Jim confirmed in person that he also loves this song, so all you haters can bite it.
what's up Kings? I talked to you at the show. It was me, and two other dudes at the very front center of the stage and we were all sipping down Jack & Cokes along with you.

What vindication sweatboard! I'm delighted for you ;D
yeah, i was at the sloss friday night. Great show but the set list was kind of let down. I could care less about most of the songs from "it still move"....i needed to hear some "lowdown", "evelyn", whatever..though i kind of dig the new electronic stuff they're trying. im just really sick of "one big holiday" and "golden"....where were the classics? worth the trip though.
Yo. Glad you guys enjoyed the poster. Me and a friend of mine created it for the show. It was our first commercial piece and it is really great to hear the good things said about it in the forums. For those of you who were not able to grab a copy I would be happy to email you a smaller version to print out on your own. Just post an email here for the file.
Thanks,
Joel

Hey man,
It was very nice work. I got you and your buddy to sign it after the show. I already got a frame for it...
:)
'wiggum, do you think that we were too close to notice all of these sound issues? Cuz I remember a glitch or two, but when does that NOT happen?
Anyhow, yo. Listen. The show was fucking awesome.
Brian, that's awesome. I think you should learn that song and we'll sing it at Bonnaroo.
I'm not joking.
At all.
Megan, I thought I had learned it and I was really excited to play it one night when we had some friends over on the back porch, but they were all like "what song are you playing that's not the Pina Colada" they kept saying it was this other song I had never heard of, it sounded like the pina colada song to me, but then again I suck at guitar so I was just happy it sounded like a song.
P.S. Meg
I got some presents for you that I plan on bringing to Bonnaroo that I think you'll really like to hear.

Really? That's very fun. Man. I have got more presents on this trip than I can ever remember. ever. How fun!
Listen, you bring the words, and teach me the chords real quick, and we'll make a very special version. Seriously. :)
OR I CAN LEARN IT ON THE DAMN AUTOHARP!!!
Now were talking.
OK, that does it! I'm wearing my new pastel pink shorts and a baby blue Polo shirt to the Asheville and Knoxville shows. What's up with bashing the preppies???? It's all about the MUSIC, not the threads!
So the sound was sketchy, the lights were doing weird things, but Sloss is awesome and the band was on!
And Bo Bice was there. (This is not important to the MMJ portion of the show, but Alabama's Idol happened to be right outside, which caused some distraction during Moses Mayfield's last song)
Every show I've been to at Sloss has had a security fence and this one didn't, so I was really excited to have my hands on the stage right in that space in the right front where Jim walks out to the edge...
Jim was making lots of funny comments, such as that thing about in the industry they say crunk. And the Peeps thing was awesome! I was wondering what the heck he had in his pockets when he came out (after I finished flipping out about his hair!) and still couldn't figure it out after he threw the first few yellow objects. Then he took out two more, held them up on either side of his face while explaining that he had a whole bunch of Peeps, the easter candy....everyone loves Peeps....and then he threw one right to me! YAY! Not actual candy Peeps, but cute little plush Peep bunnies....and I really do love Peeps.
There's a girl that has one of the setlists direct from the stage cause the roadie gave it to her...
And Magic Moment really was magical, with a funny ending.
I love MMJ! ;D

What about "I Can't Wait" or "Lil Billy"? You gotta wonder why "Lil Billy" wasn't on either of the early recordings CD.

not bashing, pink panties, just singing it like i see it.
My cat's breath smells like cat food.
I just noticed that Jim wasn't wearing his "someone in birmingham loves me" shirt. Man, wtf?
Perhaps the five solid years of touring and playing with it on have caused the fibers to disintegrate into pure bourbon. Or honey and water. Or both...hmmmmmmmm.
to wit:
The Jacket Jigger
-one tall Zombie glass
-mucho ice cubes
-Kentucky bourbon of choice to taste
-water
-honey
I'm going home and trying that shit tonight! Why didn't I think of that before?
