Title: more yuppies than a starbucks
Post by: doEVILslittle on Jun 23, 2005, 10:18 PM
i had no idea wilco had such a yuppie following intermixed with the younger crowd. the band was amazing but the crowd was disturbingly unnerving. good set from wilco, i'm not familiar with their stuff prior to yankee hotel foxtrot but now i've become intrigued. didn't realize how old the guys were, or at least they appeared to be old

onto the MMJ:

without a doubt an awesome MMJ show even if it was short and i missed the first song cuz of the early start time with regards to when the gates opened. from what i heard from afar was "o is the one that is real" i also missed the beginning of "off the record" they then played (slightly in order) OBH, golden, run thru, at dawn, don dante (which is a kiiiiiller fucking song), i will sing you songs, mahgeetah. mahgeetah was the fucking highlight with jim going insane at the end and doing the STRUM (stop and stare out at the crowd with a menacing shiteating grin on his face) STRUM, repeat.

he did something like that for OBH too and busted out the full extent of the mesa boogie's crunch with the DUHDUH....DUHDUH.....DUHDUH...quite an awesome night

jim also made some good comments like "we're used to playing small clubs indoors but with this all outside and sunny it feels like a backyard picnic" and "we're gonna break the acoustic out now and show you how to do some acoustic *flickpickering*"

i'm not sure if that's the word he used but it was something like that

jim also broke out some killer phallus guitar moves during his solos etc

was my first time seeing mmj - speechless, they were amazing, hooked for life, best band on the planet, you know the deal

wilco's crowd is alright, i almost got into a bad altercation with some drunk "yuppie" looking dude who spilled beer on me, he was being an ass the whole night, very unpleasant, luckily he wasn't there to ruin mmj's set.  wilco was good, really tight, and i'm sure all true wilco fans really enjoyed the set, but they just don't do it to me like the jacket does.

anyway, jim james is so great to watch on stage.  i couldn't keep my eyes off him.....I REALLY HOPE TO CATCH A FULL SET SOOOOON. hopefully they tour with the new album

setlist was something like this...

O is the one
Off the Record
One Big Holiday
I Will Sing You Songs
Run Thru
AT DAWN!
Golden
Don Dante
Mahgeeta

Hi folks! My first post here, been lurkin a while though.
With regards to Philly last night, I totally agree with the other post about this show and the "yuppies/starbucks" comment.
The doors opened pretty early at the pier and we were right in with no hassle at 6:30. There were about 500 or so people right in front ready to rock for MMJ and they did not disappoint!
I got their setlist from their FOH engineer after the set, and it reads just like the one previous post but in between Don Dante and Magheeta it says PRINCE 8).
So I guess they nixed that due to time constraints. I was happy that they did get nearly an hour instead of the 45 mins I feared.

This was only my 3rd live MMJ experience and they continue to blow me away. The Tower show a few weeks back was great but this being outdoors, beautiful night, sun setting directly behind the stage and the playing was spot on. Stuff like this makes you happy to be alive...

The "yuppie" contingent at Wilco is a bit disturbing but not surprising. Fortunately they mostly arrived late enough not to ruin our MMJ experience. I had 3 first timers with me and all were/are now "in" the know...

As far as Wilco goes, this was a very good show. I've been seeing these guys in every incarnation possible since Uncle Tupelo and this version with Nels Cline is just amazing. I really got to appreciate him when he was with the Geraldine Fibbers.

Look for the sweet Shoeps recording of this show in a few days.

yawn.  "yuppies"?  is this the Breakfast Club?  oh what say ye, oh-cooler-than-thou?  sheesh.  fans are fans.  don't like the "yuppie" standing next to you?  what's next?  what about the "old" guy in the corner, or the "druggie" standing in the back, the "jock", or the "geek", or the "fag hag" or some other offensive, lame ass label...

I agree. Granted, some fans can make a concert experience less desireable, but they're a minority really. This discussion has been going around with Wilco fans for years now, and only intensifies w/ each record. We can't hoard up treasures for ourselves, we must share. And if it falls in the wrong hands, so be it. That's life. We're not some superior music fan race or anything b/c we're supposedly "in the know." It IS possible to block out the "labels" when you're at a show and those of you who are able to do that and still rock out are truely the ones "in the know."

i agree as well. I look like a yuppie. i am forced to stay clean shaven and dress respectable-like because of my job. if you met me at a show, you would probably lump me in with the other so called "yuppies". little would you know that i am a hippie at heart  ;)

don't be so quick to judge my friend.

exactly.  I bet if you didn't know me at all, and you based your judgement soley on my appearance, I might get called "yuppie", which I hate.

Title: Re: more yuppies than a starbucks
Post by: aMillionDreams on Jun 24, 2005, 09:29 AM
The first time I saw Bob Dylan I was amazed at the mix of people in the audience.  I'll never forget there were two guys sitting in front of me, one in dress clothes, the other looked to be in a biker gang, and the biker turns to the well-dressed guy and says, "So you're a lawyer, huh?"
The point of the story is: no matter what differences we have amongst each other, we all have at least one thing in common, a love for the jacket.
At the same time, fans who are snobs about being fans piss me off because they try to cut people off from the music (the guy in the stor didn't ask "why aren't you in leather").  I think it's ridiculous to have to be "in the know" to be on the right level to blah blah blah.  The very phrase "in the know" implies that you were once out of the know, which means someone was nice enough to let you in.  I think that you shouldn't have to wear the right uniform and have all the inside info to see a band that you like listening to.  Everyone should be welcome to wear the jacket, be the jacket, love the jacket (or the Wilco for that matter).

A quick benefit of the doubt should be given to doeslittle, red_yeti and PatricSaintIII. I too once expressed the same sentiments on "yuppies" and scene crashers at one time (on the Wilco forums years ago actually), but have since learned to be content in the music alone. It's quite easy for a negative fan experience to spark a rant out of rage. I'd be hard pressed to find anyone on this forum who hasn't at least been irritated by this issue at shows. However, just consider these posts a loving rebuke from your fellow jacketeers  :-*
Title: Re: more yuppies than a starbucks
Post by: red_yeti on Jun 24, 2005, 10:18 AM
i've prob been to 50 concerts in my existence, i have never had a "bad" experience because music always makes me happy.

regardless, last night, one of the "yuppies" dumped half a budweiser on me. first time i've ever had the beer spill thing happen to me. that's going to make anybody mad, as it made me rather mad.  otherwise, i don't give a shit who is at the concert as long as you're there for the music and not to get shitfaced.  so that's my beef. more individual than collective.

another thing though. how can you not cut loose to mmj.  the head bobbing thing sucks...you gotta at least move a little bit.  people were rockin out more to wilco's jesus, etc. than to one big holiday. just ain't right.  def need to see a mmj headlined tour, where i know everybody is there to support the band.

ok maybe i need to specifically point out which type of yuppies i'm talking about. The drunk 35 year old stay at home moms/former sorority girls who jump around like they are still hot shit in college but are anything but that, those are the people that pissed me off. The 45 year old woman who bitched someone out just for nudging into the vacant space ahead of her and accidently stepping on her foot, jesus christ woman, learn some concert etiquette. when there is a grouping of people in close proximity to one another SOMEONE'S GONNA GET NUDGED give a little leeway...no need to yell at the kid like you're his mom...i dunno i guess this rant comes because i wasn't really familiar with wilco's fanbase (i was under the impression that it was all twentysomethings) and it came as a bit of a shock to me. you can definitely tell which "type" of yuppie is going to be a hassle and which just looks the part but is anything but a yuppie

oh yeah...

"in between Don Dante and Magheeta it says PRINCE" i thought i noticed after don dante their roadie whispered something to Jim and he yelled back to two tone and bo something that they relayed to pat and carl i wasn't sure what, i'm assuming that was it that they had to cut it and go straight to mahgeeta

P.S. still wondering if anyone has the wilco setlist.

If Yuppies are the ones that go simply to get totally drunk and obnoxious, while talking through the whole show count me in as not a fan.  Go for the music or stay home and get drunk in your backyard.

I'm speechless at this. Last time I saw Wilco in Cincinnati in the Spring, no one even so much as got out of their seats until the encore for an outta site outta mind rockout...

You guys are hilarious. So the drunk guy at the MMJ show in Athens 3 weeks ago, who spilled beer on me and kept grabbing my arm to stand up and jump was really a WILCO fan? And the woman who was too drunk to smoke, who inadvertantly put her cigarette OUT in someone's drink was really a WILCO fan? The guy at the Pantera show I saw in the 90's, who told everyone around him to shut the F up and die was a yuppie? The guy at the Van Halen show in Dallas in 1985 who told me to sit down or he was calling security was the first yuppie ever? The guy who spilled an entire beer on my head at the Day of Rock and Roll at the Superdome in 1979 (Boston, Van Halen, Heart, Blue Oyster Cult, Sammy Hagar; all for $10)was really a future yuppie- WILCO fan? Hilarious. And folks, there are some who would say Coors Light is a yuppie beer and MMJ used one of their songs to promote yuppisim...Get over yourselves folks and quit crying and judging. Jeeez. I love MMJ and I love WILCO. Ain't nothing gonna take that away when I see them live and props to ANYONE who likes a band enough to see them live. You all realize that Brittney Spears has millions of more devoted and hard core fans than MMJ? And Beethoven had more talent than all of them put together? And some people like vanilla and some like chocolate? And I'll be in Louisville on the 30th, praying MMJ plays and then rocking out to WILCO? Little less judgin' folks and a lot more love. Life is short and THANK GOD we're all different! ;D

hey guys, i posted a while back.  i was debating whether or not to take a long drive to get to the show, but it was well worth it.

my first time seeing my morning jacket, and it was amazing.  i don't really like wilco as much, but they put on a great show.  the crowd was fine aside from your normal drunks and what have you.

glad i got to hear At Dawn and O. looking forward to seeing them again as soon as i can, hopefully they tour this fall.

yeti, I am addressing ALL the people whining and complaining about yuppie WILCO fans. Spread some love and positivism man: everyone is different and everyone F's up at some point. Just to think you guys let someone else's actions affect your time at the show is puzzling to me. You have absolutely no say when it comes to why another human being wants to go to a show. When did rock and roll get so judgemental and nasty? I guess I am getting old... :-/

Title: Re: more yuppies than a starbucks

Well, I didn't realize that by echoing the "yuppie" sentiment I'd help the bashing begin.
I guess I thought my 1st post here might provoke a "welcome"....oh well.

"Yuppie" from my perspective is not necessarily a look, age, haircut, dress or whatever. It's kinda hard to pinpoint. Hell, lot's of y'all would probably think I fit that bill. (and I brew starbucks or similar quality coffee at home most mornings so shoot me too)

I guess that my comment was more directed at how I feel when people just lollygag into a show and give no props to an opening act that clearly is a cut above. This has happened numerous times over the years at shows I've attended. I'm the first to pronounce myself guilty of being a little judgemental when I find myself "ahead of the curve" in these situations.
Examples that come to mind; Metallica opening for Ozzy in 1986, X opening for Warren Zevon in 91 or so, The Buzzcocks opening for Pearl Jam in 2003 and so on and so on...

But in the end, I'm glad (and maybe a little selfish) that more people don't get it so soon. I don't feel that "I'm special" because I already know, I really just feel that I'm LUCKY and blessed to know...
That said, bash on my friends.   ;D

Misunderstood (32 nothings)

i knew there were alot of em but were there really 32 nothings in that version? that was a pretty cool effect, i closed my eyes and it actually sounded like a record skipping it was pretty fucking awesome, and spider (kidsmoke) was another highlight for me, it just sounded amazing especially when they kicked into high gear

but yeah....the yuppie discussion, it by no means was everyone, just a few people around me who didn't so much ruin the show, just took away from the expereince of being in the crowd. the music went untouched and was impeccable, wilco is a great live act and i'll definitelysee them again. nels cline was fucking insane...love that man. i guess yuppie was the wrong term to use but i was just pissed off at a select few and it's the first word i came up with

doeslittle, I hear ya on Kidsmoke. I saw them last Sept here in Nashville and had one of my greatest concert moments ever when Kidsmoke kicked in. I closed my eyes and let it soak in, better than the record. When I saw them play it in Memphis a couple of months ago, I got to watch others being turned on. There was a guy on the front row of the balcony, losing his ever lovin' mind! Chill bumps just thinking about it... Can't wait until Thursday in Louisville.  ;D ;D

Hi, my first post here, and my first MMJ show last night.  All I can say is, "Holy Shit"  What a phenominal live band.  I have just started getting into this band about a month ago, and was pretty pumped for this show last night.  They blew me away with their talent, and their overall ability rock the hell out.

One of the coolest parts of the night was when they were doing Golden, and from my vantage point the sun was setting right over Jim's head...he looked like a mystic rock god at that particular part in the show...

I can't wait to catch these guys again, hopefully they'll be headlining next time.

Yes, I can verify in fact that a friend of mine owned one of the 2 rigs that you saw. One is Shoeps mics the other I'm not sure but it looked like Shoeps too.

I'd say get the LP's first, then tackle the EP's, anyone else?

As for a band history, the Bio on here is pretty decent, but also check out the fan site Nashville to Kentucky. Find it in the "links" from this site. It's a very comprehensive site about all things MMJ, especially all the hard to find releases and cover songs...

aMillionDreams just posted the link...thanks bro

I was at the Philly Show last night. MMJ sounded great and played a great set. Was happy with the song selection, especially with getting some At Dawn. Off the Record is outstanding, and I assume will be a single off their new record. Don Dante is a mindblower. One Big Holiday rocked, with the highlight of the night being with Jim doing the crazed rock serial killer head turning. Plus, we got some I Will Sing you Songs, even though it was cut a bit short (no final yell).

The Bad- Why dont people rock out? Jesus. I got the feeling the vast majority of people were there for Wilco, and thats cool, but peole were just standing around like they were doing MMJ a favor, staning around and talking. So that was disappointing, even though it would take an A bomb to interrupt me not enjoying MMJ. BUt still . . . heres hoping they tour this fall for the new album and headline so all mmj fans can unite and rock out like it should be. Nothing to do with yuppies or anything like that, but just why do you come to a concert if you are going to just stand around?

Some people are shy, too, don't forget.  And there's that weird "cool" thing that you don't want to get too excited in front of your friends.

If your friends SUCK.

I am a rock out freak at these shows, and I couldn't stop myself if I tried.  Everybody r.o.c.k.

:)

I don't think the only reason to not "rock out" during a mmj show is because you're shy ???
I love it when they do the low key thing (granted, they haven't done it in a while) but they used to be known for having a haunting, mellow sound.  I like to rock out as much as the next guy but I see nothing wrong with sitting down, chilling out, and soaking up all the music in.  Plus, it's nice to not have people walking around, spilling beer on you, trying their hardest to shout over the music.  Call me old fashion, or call me a hippie but I hope the Palace show is more low key.  I've been to shows there where they wouldn't let you in during a song, you had to wait until the song was over to take your seat.  I think that would be wonderful!

I didn't say it was the only reason.

This is kind of a pointless argument.

My short sentences make this seem snippy.  It isn't meant to be.  Honestly.

I think the key thing is that everybody needs to "deal" with the music a best serves them, and whatever that may be, without puking on people, is great.

Unless you're ycartrob.  Who likes to be puked on because of the high rock and roll factor.  ;)

(please don't let's start a fight about that, I'm seriously being funny.)

That's a good one!  ;)
I wasn't trying to start an argument with you.  I was just stating my opinion about how mmj seems to only be talked about as "balls-to-the-wall" rock these days.  And I was trying to remind people that they have a softer side too.
Sorry if I made it sound like anything else.

EC, it really depends on what you look like; if I find you attractive, then it's OK for you to puke on me; if I find you unattractive, then it's not OK. It's a matter of taste and tolerance...

Hey, I think aMillionDreams brings up a good point.  The thing that drew me to the Jacket was the haunting mellower sounds.  These days they are balls to the wall--not that there is anything wrong with that.

When describing them I used to say they sound "haunting" or "dream-like", or something to that extent.  I think rock n' roll may now suffice.  It would be cool if the new album pays tribute to some of those amazing chorus' and harmonies.

loved jim's banter. listen after he says "we're gonna get out the acoustic gitfiddle" you can hear me scream "YEAH JIM" what an amazing recording

Yes, the recording of this show is ruined by all those "lame friggin yappin yuppies" during the quieter passages...and it's a shame because it's a really decent recording.  >:(

Hope all the wilco opening sets aren't like that.
