Title: X-Mas Curtain
Post by: darkglow on Jul 13, 2005, 06:15 AM
do you think they'll ever play it again since john is gone?

for thoughtless folks like me and J who'd pay,
but cant afford the finer things in life so we heist them all..
we're criminals that never break the law!

no doubt this song probably has sentimental value, and they may never play it again live.. or they may have and i just dont know it.. but dammit.. that is one of my favorite live tunes that MMJ plays.. especially when they speed it up a bit and you hear that whining guitar. i almost had a wreck in the car listening to it one day

EDIT: click and listen to the version i'm referring to http://www.archive.org/download/mmj2003-09-26.shnf/mmj2003-09-26d1t09_vbr.mp3

that song makes me think of seeing them in WFPK studios four days before Christmas Day in 2002.  It's a great song, maybe they should put it on the shelf for a while, in honor of Johnny Quaid. :(

Some more songs I think they have not played again: Phone Went West and especially War Begun with that kickass duelling guitars outro.
These might not return to the set any time soon...

How about 'The Dark', 'Tyrone', 'Heartbreakin' Man'?  I mess the old stuff.  I hope they bring some of it back!

I think Heartbreaking Man was played already, though I'm not sure.

I am sure they played War Begun in Knoxville at Blue Cats, 1-18-04 (my 40th birthday  ;D). It was the 2nd show with Carl and Bo. I remember a twist they put on the middle/end, but I cannot remember how it went. Probably find it on-line somewhere. I figure if they still play It's About Twilight, then they'll play everything else. I sort of wished the other day that they would go back and re-record some of that Tennessee Fire stuff that is muffled (ie, I Will be There When You Die). Is that sacrilege for me to say??  ??? ???

Nah, that's not sacrilege.  Jim had demo versions of most of the songs from At Dawn and he rerecorded those.  I don't think that they should record them yet.  They should wait another couple years at least and revisit them.  Or start playing them in concert again and put out a live album!

they played heartbreakin' man at knoxville which was a treat to see, and at bonnaroo too and the audience sounded like they loved it.

That was my very first My Morning Jacket concert.  I haven't been nearly the same sense.  I wish so badly I knew what the setlist was that night, It was an Amazing show and it seems like they played a whole bunch of older songs.  They Closed with Phone Went West. ;D  I don't think there is a better song to close a show with in the entire rock n roll cannon.  God, I wish they'd bring that one back.

Yes Phone Went West live is tha bomb. It belongs in the closing spot.I think Mahgeeta is not a good choice as a set closer. It rocks, but it has such a 'start of the show' feel to it, in the lyrics too.

I remember the first time I heard Phone Went West live. I didn't know much about the band and hadn't heard the album version. The whole show was knocking my socks off but this was something else - literally - so unexpected but done so well. I think that's one of the band's real stengths, they're so eclectic but everything's done to the highest standard. Nothing sounds like a pastiche. It's the one I was humming on the way back to the hotel. (Along with The Way That He Sings)

I'm pretty sure that they played X-Mas in 5/18/2004 in St. Louis with Bo and Carl...I should know for sure, I was there, but it's been a while.  And I agree that they need to bring back the classics, post haste!  I'd love some "Come Closer" or some "Tyrone."  ;D

funny story about "come closer"

when me and my brother were down in birmingham for the show at the sloss furnaces.. we were front and center right up against the stage.. and when the feedback was happening during bermuda highway and jim james practically stood above us and bent down to hear us singing the lyrics right in his face.. my brother kept saying 'come closer.. come closer..' because he wanted him to play that song.. and i was like "you sound like a fag, man, quit" and he said "fuck no i wanna hear that song!" and jim just smirked and laughed at us.

That's hilarious.  That's actually really hilarious.  I know I remember hearing y'all ask for Bermuda Highway.

Nothin' wrong with asking a man to come closer, even if you're a man, too.  ;)

Which reminds me that Jen just finally got her pictures on the computer...

Ah that was a good night.

Sloss.  Taken by Fawce. (which is my nickname for her)

Anyhow, yeah, I remember being really surprised at a lot of the old songs that they played over the course of their last set of dates.

It made me really happy.  :)

Maybe J is J. Glenn, or Jack Nicholson.

Great song.

Well, yes, it is. Goddamn, the way 'I will be there when you die' is recorded is absolutely divine! The noises in the beginning, the way it sounds like you're approaching Jim, and then his voice with that natural reverb... Wow! Can't you hear that? Are you so spoiled by ultra hi-fi smooth Britny Spears recordings that you can no longer hear the beauty of natural sounds anymore?

I'm sorry, but this is sort of a hot topic for me. That song and the sound of that album, damn, the first time I heard that was so overwhelming... That album is classical. Drop the "oh, I hear a hiss in the background, it's not perfect!"-bullshit and learn to understand this.
