Post by: chunt983 on Oct 07, 2005, 11:13 PM

brian (sweatboard) i believe lives in knoxville.  im not sure if he taped it, but its at least 2 1/2 hours or more from nashville to knoxville, so if he taped it, i wouldnt expect it up until late late or early morning, depending how you see it.  its on eastern time.  i think a few of the group live closer, so we might get a set list before then!  give it to us!!!

I just got back from the concert (i live pretty close by), and I had a blast.  It's my second time seeing them live.  They played everything off of Z except knot comes loose, and a pretty good mix of other stuff (wish they had played some more off of The Tennessee Fire though).  I got to meet the guys afterwards and they signed my copy of Z.  Very cool.

1. What was the setlist?
2. How was Kathleen?
3. Who all got together?  (Board dudes I mean)
4. Corey, did you get a tshirt?
5. Brian, did you tape it?
6. What were the lights like?
7. Tom, did you get your tshirt signed? (Or make a new one?)

:)
You know.  When y'all get up or whatever. ;)

Setlist was quite similar to previous nights in the main set.  I usually write these things down, but not last night.  I had been boozing at Octoberfest most of the day and couldn't keep it together.  Whatever the case, it was close to this (order definitely off):

Wordless Chorus
It Beats For You
Gideon ->
One Big Holiday
The Way That He Sings
Golden (with Kathleen on backing vocals)
Sooner (!!! - with Jim on Omnichord again)
What a Wonderful Man
Off the Record
Lay Low
Dondante
Run Thru

ENCORE (this is where things got really, really mind blowingly good - I know this part is right):
Into the Woods (first time played live? - with Bobby Bare Jr. and others on backing vx)
I Think I'm Going to Hell (!)
At Dawn (!!!)
Northern Sky (Nick Drake cover, beautiful, first time played by MMJ?)
Mahgeetah
Anytime

They were great, though seeing them a bunch of times on the IT STILL MOVES tour and then again at Sloss Furnace a few months back, it wasn't quite as heavy on surprise old songs or some former standby's like LOWDOWN or DANCEFLOORS.  That being said, it had some magical moments, esp. pulling out a gorgeous Nick Drake cover and some other highlights.  No STEAM ENGINE or THE BEAR or HEARTBREAKIN' MAN or HOPEFULLY, but maybe I'm just a complainer.  I should also note that they have REALLY tightened up on songs like Dondante that were a bit loose a couple months back.

Kathleen Edwards was fine but not great.  Kind of not my thing, either, so I really shouldn't comment.  I'm not saying anything bad, just that her set wasn't overly memorable for me.

that was for sure the best MMJ show i've been to, i wish i could have stayed afterwards but the parental unit wasn't to thrilled with me coming home at 4 in the morning.

i liked Kathleen Edwards. i felt sorry for her becasue there were some idiots in the crowd giving her shit.

actually, a guy was yelling "free love" and she thought he yelled "freebird" (the guy was 5 or 6 people behind me, and everyone around me heard "free love"). She went into some rant about football and yelling and people wanting opening acts to get off stage and how Willie Nelson fans yell "freebird" louder....it was uncalled for and sounded like something she has thought about saying before, rather than saying something off the top of her head. It's a shame too b/c her misunderstanding put a small damper on a great opening set. I have seen 100's of openers, and seen opening bands BOOED, but the crowd was more than receptive b/c, honestly, Katlenn Edwards a great performer with a great set of musicians with her. I think she has a chip on her shoulder, which showed b/c of a misunderstanding. It's only rock and roll...

Oooohhh no.  That kind of sucks.

But, being an opening act is hard.  But that's too bad.  I'm glad she rocked, though.  Because she does rock. hard.

Hey--it was great seeing some of the Louisville crowd there--antoniostrohs and jacksoncooper to name a few.  What a great show, what a great time.  The fellers were definitely on.

Not that it matters....but, I thought Kathleen Edwards was pretty damn good.  She definitely has a great band with her and she has several great pop tunes.

Hell yeah.  It was a great show.  I wish I could have hung around for a little while longer, but the fiancee and I were really tired and ready to head back to the hotel.

It was a real treat to hear all of the z-material live, with the exception of "Knot Comes Loose".  And I really enjoyed the opening set.  I have been a fan of hers for a while now, but this was the first chance I've had to see her live.

The same guy who got called-out for yelling "freebird" or whatever he actually yelled, was part of a group of people in front of me who seriously detracted from my enjoyment.  They were all pretty drunk, which is no problem, but they kept spilling beer and waving their cigarette-holding hands around.

Luckily I was able to dodge both of those successfully, but I hate having to focus on anything other than the band at a show.  All I ask is that you be respectful of the people around you.

But really, other than that, it was a great show.  I can't wait for Indy, and The Palace!

imo, the light were nothing to write home about. during the opening song (wordless chorus), the stage lights didn't come on till midway through the song.
