Title: Chicago Show
Post by: tomEisenbraun on Oct 23, 2005, 02:31 AM
Looks like nobody's gotten around to posting yet, but I'd love to know how it went. I miss my hometown dearly, and would have loved to have been able to see them at the Vic.

So how was it?

Can't speak for anyone but me . . . THE SHOW WAS AWESOME.  They rocked the Vic for sure.  The guys seem to have a great time on stage; almost looks like they are jamming in someone's basement or garage (they still play to one another).

WXRT taped the show so watch their website wxrt.com for when they will play it on their Sunday night concert series.  However, I believe they are replaying the show from last year at Metro this Sunday evening.  They stream worldwide so you could at least hear old MMJ.

Kathleen Edwards was a great opening act.  Enjoyed every one of her band's songs as well.

I would completely concur.  They were fucking amazing as they were at the Metro last year.  There sound was absolutely unbelievable.  I would say Off the Record and Run Thru would be noticable high points for me.  The song from Elizabethtown wasn't recognized by too many, and I was disappointed they didn't play Steam Engine, but over it was beyond a 5 star effort.

They were amazing last nite, these guys are on top of their game right now. I loved Anytime as the show closer.  I am always in awe of how great Jim's voice sounds live.  I have only one minor complaint and that is that the stage was too dark.  Jim has a lot of personality and the band has great stage presence and i thought that didn't come through as well because of the lighting.  Anybody else agree?

Great pictures!
What is the url to your website where you will put up the recording.  We were sitting a couple of rows behind you and were wondering who you were taping the show for.  Pretty cool.

When he said the archive, I assume he means www.archive.org.
There are several other MMJ shows there as well.

In a word: Awesome

I was completely dumbfounded by their performance and professionalism last night, both on and off stage.

The crowd--the crowd was soooooo into it! I think that The Vic wasn't a large enough venue for them - even with Game 1 of the world series being played 15 miles away, the house was packed!  Highlights for me included Dondante (damn, Tom!) Wordless, Off The Record and Run Thru. Kathleen was great too, both with her band and Jim.

Being a old friend of the "monitor man" Dave, I had the privilege of being able to hang out backstage with everyone from the sound check through breakdown - totally cool experience that I will never forget.

Both the band and crew of MMJ are totally down to earth, regular joes that have been blessed with a sound that will make you a fan after one show.

I sincerely say to Jim, Tom, Bo, Carl Patrick, Dave, everyone - Thanks guys, for a great time.

Dan

This show was fucking ridiculous. I can't believe some of the shit that jim was doing during some of those solos...just jamming. my mind was truly blown. here is my best guess at the set...definitely out of order.

loved the beer guzzling vikings on into the woods....were those guys just the roadies?

wordless chorus
it beats 4 u
gideon
one big holiday
o is the one
x-mas curtain
golden
sooner
what a wonderful man
off the record
lay low
dondante
run thru

where to begin
into the woods
mahgeetah
anytime

Got that damn FREE CRACK sign right under Patrick's bass drum... ;D

I swear Bri, when my wife put that on the back of the Crunk Unit, I thought she went too far.

Who knew? I guess you should never doubt a woman's intuition (especially your wife's!).

Last night's show just proves that a band can play heartbreakingly beautiful and turn around and kick your ass with the next song. Run Thru was one of those "Oh shit!" performances when you're just about driven insane by a band.

Went with some serious fans and some newbies and we were all equally blown away. The Jacket definitely made some new hardcore fans last night.

I enjoyed Kathleen Edwards' set, as well. She's perfect on Golden.

Can't wait for tonight in Indy!

Quotehere is my best guess at the set...definitely out of order.

Pretty darn close!  Here's the actual setlist:

01. [ WXRT intro / Thax Douglas poem ]
02. Wordless Chorus
03. It Beats 4 U
04. Gideon
05. One Big Holiday
06. O Is The One That Is Real
07. X-mas Curtain
08. Golden *
09. Sooner
10. What A Wonderful Man
11. Off The Record
12. Lay Low
13. Dondante
14. Run Thru

ENCORE

15. Into The Woods
16. Where To Begin
17. Mahgeetah
18. Anytime

* with Kathleen Edwards

Any ideas on the full set list last night?

Minding that I'm really only deeply familiar with the first two records, here's what I recall:

1. Wordless Chorus
2. It Beats 4 U
3. Gideon
4. One Big Holiday
5. O is the One
6. X-Mas Curtain
7. Golden
(It's at this point where the order and accuracy wane)
8. Mahgeetah
9. ?
10. Off the Record
11. Dondante
12. Into the Woods
13. What a Wonderful Man
14. Dancefloors
(Encore--I could be way off on this)
15. ?
16. I Will Sing You Songs
17. Run Thru

Someone mentioned a song from Elizabethtown.  Was either Master Plan or Easy Morning Rebel played?  Am I missing or confusing some?

I'll admit that I'm a larger fan of the first two records and their rawness, but damn if they don't continue to put on outstanding shows!  Last time I saw them was years ago in a tiny bar in Atlanta.  two-thirds of the set was with the band, and a third (including the encore) was Jim James and a geetah.  A fond memory, that show...

Thanks.

Word  ;D

The question is, what does she have in store for the Bogart's show?

she's taking one for the team...that 4 letter word makes it impossible for her to attend:

I just want to see how far she can push the envelope with the sign making.  She can really go all out since it will be just you and Tom holding it.   ;)

WOW.
That was a freaking awesome show!
 :o
My first MMJ show and I wasn't totally sure if I was going to go, but they have such a reputation for their killer shows that I had to check them out. They certainly did not disappoint. Got there early for a front row spot. Man, I don't know if I've ever been to a show with that much energy.
My neck is so sore today from all of that thrashing about. Haha

Right now, I only have their last 2 albums, but I'll definitely have to pick up the others.
Can't wait to hear a recording of it.

The Chicago Show was incredible.  I'm sort of out of the show sharing loop these days, but would love to get a copy of the show. Does anyone (or would anyone be willing) to do a b&p or trade a regular cd through the mail of this show?  If so, let me know and I can forward a copy of the list of shows that I have.

I know, I know bit torrent is the new thing, but I don't like change...

There's a 24-bit version on tapers.org.  But most folks will want the 16-bit version, referenced over on DimeaDozen.  The 16-bit version is also in the uploading / approval process at the Live Music Archive:

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree.php

Keep an eye out there in the next couple days and it'll post publicly.

Oops...just realized you were asking about hammerhorror's recording.  No idea if his is available elsewhere, I was referring to my own recordings.

i'm also uploading a different source from the two (3 counting the 24bit copy) listed above.  i've been waiting a day for it to be approved on the archive...hopefully someone will notice it today.

here's the temporary link, but it might change once it gets approved...
