My Top 5 MMJ Live Tunes...
One Big Holiday
Run Thru
Don Dante
Phone Went West
Mahgeetah
What's yours???
That's a damn good top 5.
also
O is The One That Is Real- is a live favorite of mine, love the spacy guitar (sounds very Z), love the "The RADIO WILL PLAY!!!!!!" the emotion, the energy, same things I really love about "Anytime" when they play that Live.
I had a dream I was seeing MMJ in this real small bar and they were playing Picture Of You and it was blowing my fucking socks off, so I walked up to Jim right after the song and just said "YES!!!!!!!!!" and put my hand up for a high five, he returned the high five and responded in turn with a knowing "YES!!!!!!!" of his own. So........Picture Of You has to be up there also.
The Bear - This was the song that started my obsession with this band. When they play it live I get chill bumps and feel like anything in the world is possible.
Just One Thing- My Wife and I have slow danced to this one a few times and I can't imagine many better feelings in the world than dancing with the person that you love most in the world while this song is being played live in the same room.
At Dawn - Like The Bear this is one of the songs that touched me so deeply when I first started listening to MMJ. The lyrics hit me really hard the same way as The Bear. When I hear that opening drum beat my heart rate speeds up and I get this huge rush of blood to my head and then Jim completly blows my head apart with................... "AT DAAAAAAAAAAWWWWNNNNNNN They'll Ride" It's like um, It's like......................FREE CRACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Five top live tunes: Today it'd probably be:
Phone Went West
Lil Billy
Mageetah
The Way that He Sings
War Begun
But that's such a hard question because I'm leaving off The Bear, It's About Twilight Now, By My Car, Into the Woods,
and so many more...it's kinda like choosing which child is your favorite!
Low Dog
Damn I wish I could see em play Lil' Billy.
QuoteDamn I wish I could see em play Lil' Billy.
What song is that? Where can I find it, on which CD?
dondante, run thru, the way that he sings, bermuda highway, mahgeetah.
What song is that? Where can I find it, on which CD?
As far as I know, it's never been recorded for any album. It's probably one of their earliest songs. The best version (or those that I have) is from the 10/25/01 ('a date which shall live in infamy' show, in Austin TX). It's on this show from 1/24/02 (Nashville, Exit/In), which will be up somewhere fairly soon by Sweatboard and/or Kory. On this version (1/24/02), it was the closing song, and it's played at a much faster tempo than the 10/25/01 version. The screaming from Jim during the end of this version is classic, legendary, and amazing!!
Low Dog
dondante
the bear
o is the one that is real
run thru
one big holiday
honorable mention: cobra (only saw it live once, but...)
The screaming from Jim during the end of this version is classic, legendary, and amazing!
Let me clarify - both versions are good, but the legendary screaming takes place on the 10/25/01 show, not the 1/24/02 show. But hey, if it's MMJ, it's all good, right!?
Low Dog

Come on Low Dog! We all know who your favorite child is. ;) And we have all seen the pictures to prove it.

lil billy isn't on an album. It's a song they used to play live back in the day but they never put it on an album. Sounds more like a Months of Sundays song. You can find a live version here:

MY TOP 5 LIVE
1. One Big Holiday - has always and will always kicks all kinds of ass live. They play it for so long before they put it on an album that it became legendary
2. The Bear - amazing live song. This song has never not given me chills live. As a matter of fact it's should probably be #1
3. War Begun - great live song. Jim's solo at the end makes the album version seem like a tease. Also many a chills from this one.
4. At Dawn - I've seen this song in so many forms that I have to include it.. He played it on a grand in small ampitheatre and sang it with no mic. Then he played it at Headliners with no mic and quieted a sold out audience. Then to hear the recording of Bonaroo where he played it to god knows of how many peeps. good shit!
5. Cobra - Only got to see it once at Lebowski Fest. I hope they bring it back.

I've got a great version from the BRYCC House in Louisville 3/2/01 that's amazing. It's slowed down a bit but that just makes the screaming at the end kick that much more ass. I've sent this show to two people who both agreed to put it on archive.org, but alas...
dondante kinda made me pee my pants a little...
it was scary good!
Mahgeeta
Run Thru
Don Dante
The Way That He Sings
I Think I'm Going To Hell
I hate to drag this off topic, but regarding the Lil Billy - I've just downloaded the 05-13-2000 version, but would certainly like to hear the "best" version that has been mentioned...
Could anyone be so kind as to direct me to a URL or even e-mail me the song?
Much love.
The Way That He Sings
Mahgeeta

One of my favorite version of this song right here. Jim goes fuckin nuts at the end of it.

EC. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! finally, the genius of Ludwig is recognized! Wittgenstein is my favorite philosopher. He's just so smart and crazy at the same time. I believe there's so much untappped wisdom in "Philosophical Investigations" that it just might change the world.
I always think of him when the aesthetics of the Jacket are discussed on here.......how we try to explain to each other how we feel about certain songs, etc. Some of us get each other-- understand this specific language we're speaking. Then, some just can't comprehend at all....
Plus, damn! He's a hottie! Just check out that picture!!!!
("Philly ass??" the wife and I will be returning to San Diego for a week's vacation in March!!!!!!!! Why? Because Philly still blows!)
Run Thru
OBH
Mahgeetah
It's About Twilight
Anytime
O Is the One
War Begun
Cobra
(That's 5, right?)
(If you're talking about Cobra, yes. ;))

I think that makes me want to research Wittgenstein a little further. I don't know him very well. Always nice to have an excuse to go hang out at my favourite 2nd hand bookstore. :) I'm sorry that Philadelphia is still sucking so hard for you. Man alive.
Since we're talking about seeing live shows I would say that of my top five, when I know Run Thru's gonna be played, I turn into a S.P.A.Z. Pretty much the same with Mahgeetah.

oh my god!!!!! I can't believe I forgot about this one! When Jim goes guitarless and turns in a full on SOUL-man, putting everything into it he possibly can, almost doubling over in pain while belting out the most gorgeous notes you've ever heard!!!!
awesome!
