Title: Europe (again!)
Post by: Chris T on Feb 28, 2006, 12:46 PM
Hi, I just came over here to see if there was any news on the "rescheduled" European dates. Alas no, just announcements of US dates ( ???)
having read some of the threads here I notice that some of you know the band or at least claim to know the band.
So I ask you a favour, next time you see them could you ask them if and when they intend to come back to Europe? and tell them that booking US dates is just rubbing salt in the wound, a wound that has healed and reopened four times now. :-/
Thanks for indulging me
Christine.

fact of the matter is, when recovering osmehting as serious as "complications from pneumonia," you probably aren't going to want to fly overseas and run an entire European tour as a way of getting back in the game. They're playing just three or four shows, two of which aren't more than a four hour road trip away.

they aren't shafting you guys, they're getting back into the swing of things, and doing so by taking it a little easy. so take 'er easy, they will most certainly get aorund to you. Y'all probably have serious priority, seeing as it's you they had to cancel on. They don't hate you. Being pissed because Jim got ill won't do anything but make it worse.

Funny, I don't recall asking for your opinion, just asking someone to pass on a message.

It's nice to see that "they'll get around to us " good of them that.
I'm not pissed that  what-his-nuts got sick that would be absurd, I'm not that selfish, but put yourself in our place. How many jacket shows did you get to see last year or have the oppurtunity to see? A lot more than us, which is none, same for the year before that and the year before that.
Don't even start me on money we lost on travel/hotels.

I remember when my dad had pleurasy, a complication from pneumonia, and broke three ribs coughing, still only had three weeks off work and he works outside.

You can make as many excuses for them as you like but it's clear that Europe is no longer a priority for them, but I wouldn't expect you to understand.

calm down chris t!!! i'm sure tom's not having a stab at you - just there has been a big outpouring of angst on the board about cancelled & non-rescheduled shows since the end of last year.

they will get around to rescheduling shows, but we all have to be patient. as tom says, they're probably starting off slowly to get back into the swing of things, (it has been 3 months since they played a show after all) and we'll see more dates appear on the shows lists... you just have to be patient along with the rest of us.

you are not the only person who is very keen to see them, and not the only non-US person. the jacket haven't been to australia since the very start of 2004, so we've been waiting a while too. i've never seen them live, so i'm sitting tight, fingers crossed too.  surely it's only natural that, as they are an american band, that they first play local (american) shows, then travel overseas to play shows for their fans. every other band on the face of the planet does it this way... most of the people on this board are american or canadian, so of course they are lucky enough to be able to see many more shows. they are also lovely people who write reviews, post photos or even video footage of those shows to share with the rest of us. which is great!!

i've also had pleurisy, and cracked a rib from coughing. so i know what you're talking about. but we don't know the details of jim's exact medical condition, so who are we to whinge about him not being fighting-fit in a couple of weeks, or months or whatever. it is none of our business, we can only wish him a speedy recovery & let nature take its course.

how can you say europe is no longer a priority for them?? that is just ridiculous. shit happens, people get sick, its not like they have a "problem" with europe & europeans, so they've decided to snub you... geez.

just enjoy the music, enjoy talking to the rest of us about the music, and be PATIENT!!!

devil's advocate here!  Chris T, my advice / opinion on things is that the people who know the band are probably the last people you'd want to pass along this message.  they defend the band at every last angle and will just see you as bitter and ungrateful.  i started a thread a while back trying to show some (albeit in a bitter tone) sympathy for the european fans and dismay at the handling of things.  so it goes.  your best hope is knowing the band reads the message board pretty occasionally and will set things right at some time in the future.  hopefully it's sooner than later for you over there.    :)

i heard from a friend of the band that Jim had to be hospitalized due to the complications from the pneumonia...that it had gotten into his heart...that is serious shit...a lot more serious than broken ribs (not to take anything away from your father who sounds like a bad ass for working in that amount of pain).  but Jim also doesn't have to support a family and is probably doing ok in the finance department that he doesn't have to work when he is sick like the rest of us poor suckers!

we are lucky that Jim is well and that something worse didn't happen and none of us would ever see MMJ again!  be thankful for what you have and what life deals you.  MMJ will come to Europe..probably in the Fall when the get their tour legs back!  be patient!  long live the Jacket!

QuoteChris T..........most of the artists I love are from England...chances are, I'll never see 90% of them live in concert, so don't feel bad........maybe we should switch countries.  ;)

That's a good point Rob. It's natural that a band plays more in their own country. I reckon most bands do - even if they have had to go abroad to get the ball rolling in their early days.
I'm keen to see them back here but I'd rather wait for a tour that really happens rather than have an announcement of a tour that gets cancelled because the plans have been premature.

Chris T - it was out of order to be rude to Tom. If you stick around a while you'll see he's the last person who deserves it. I do get your point about the repeatedly cancelled shows though. That's why I don't think they shouldn't make any half-arsed announcements. That's not to say the odd word of encouragement isn't welcome.

i'm with you on that one. I want them to fully recover before heading to the old continent. I don't want another MMJ-show without vocals like Brussels 2003.

I also hope Jim won't tire himself  and his voice touring (i.e. doing some festivals) again in America. Touring in europe first seems a safe bet to me ;)

CC,

do you mean Funk Dat, by Sagat? That's one hell of a funky song. Just saw it the other day on MTV. Kewl 8)

Lyrics:

FUNK DAT!

Question...
Why is it that every time
I'm walking down the street,
Somebody wants to stop me
Just to give me a flyer?

C'mon man...
FUNK DAT!
Get out of my way!

Question...
Why is it that every time
I'm walking to the bank,
The tellers look at me
Like I'm the one that robbed them last week?

C'mon man...
FUNK DAT!
What are you looking at?

Question...
Why is it that every time
I turn on the radio,
I hear the same five songs
fifteen times a day for three months?

Man...
FUNK DAT!
Get a new DJ!

Question...
Why is it that bums ask me for money,
When I ain't got none?
What is it an "in" thing or something,
"Let me remind this dude he ain't got no money. Huh?

Man...
FUNK DAT!
Get a job!

You know,
Every time I see my neighboor,
She tells me to stay out of trouble,
The other one looks at me like
I'm the one that got her daughter strung out.

C'mon man...
FUNK DAT!
What are you looking at?

Seems like every time it never fails,
It never fails...
I'm just chillin' in my crib,
Minding my own business,
And somebody calls me just to talk about nothing...

FUNK DAT!
Get a life!

Question...
Why is it that when I go out to a night club,
Only the ugly chicks wanna step to me,
I mean like I'm ugly or something, huh?
What do you mean, huh?

FUNK DAT!
Get outta my face!

Kinda appropriate ;D

We are good people, and will continue to be good people.  We never came across as trying to mean, rude, sarcastic or anything that may apply. Chris T,

I'm also in the UK and I have now experienced 4 cancelled gigs. But I can't see why you are being so provocative (unless you are fishing).

You have made your point. One, if it were expressed a little more calmly, I would have some sympathy with. However, dispite previous cancellations being for reasons of self interest by the band, this time  we really should empathise with Jim.  Don't forget he came over at short notice to do a solo gig as consolation for the St James Church cancellation. He did not need to do that.

Try and chill out for now for God's sake. 8)

since concert cancellations could happen to anyone, please purchase comprehensive travel insurance that permits you to cancel your trip/hotel at the drop of a hat.
like that, no lost money, and less anger.

It's not always as simple as that though. I don't agree with Chris's tone but she has a right to express her disappointment. Insurance costs money and for some people money is short. Concert cancellations can happen to anyone, but it's the repeated cancellation that's upsetting people.

I really don't want this old wound reopened. We're reading about the great shows folks have seen and their plans for bonnarroo etc and waiting patiently for our own shows to be announced. What's really helped heal this is the sensitive and unpatronising way most members who post on this have been.

I'm moving to Spb, Russia soon and I know the Jacket won't come there:(  But, when they do come to Europe I'm going to book my ticket, reserve a room in a hostel or hotel, and hop on a train to see them because I wish I would've seen them more in the past and for some reason only in the last year have they become my hands down favourite band.  So, I will travel to see them in a club.  I've only seen them once at roo 04.

i guess i can understand that many europeans feel upset about the tour cancellations.  I feel really bad that I haven't seen them more.  And I feel totally bummed that I might not be able to see them again.  But, just be glad that you have seen the ones you've seen and also be thankful for the people who tape and download the shows so others who weren't able to make it can hear it.

And, also just hope for the best.  (that Jim gets better soon and rocks out europe, followed by a world tour ;D)

only just joined this forum so not really gained a real insight as yet, but speaking as a resident of the UK i feel i need to repair some bad feeling here.

Quite simply, ChrisT needs to wake up and smell the roses. There's no reason whatsoever to presume that MMJ will never return to the UK (hell i hope there aint).  I was gutted they cancelled, but at least Jim had a viable excuse rather than like Babyshambles whose crack-head lead singer just decides he cant be bothered to show.

I imagine they lost a lot of money out of it too, and it obviously involves a lot of planning.

Sorry if this has all been said before.  We in the UK often forget how lucky we are with live music, I apologise sincerely.

I saw them the last time they played Manchester, and it was honestly the best gig I've ever seen.

So, I've patiently waited, and bought tickets, and had to get refunds, again and again.

Just some honesty would help guys. Its funny that Jim's illnesses seem to coincide with the prospect of overseas travel.

I'll eat my words if the Band end up cancelling the Pearl Jam support slot, but I seriously doubt this will happen.

Right on rats.  It is so obnoxious  for people to keep  acting like the band has some kind of vendetta against the UK.

Then you post something about awaiting our abusive responses.  Was that not the point of your post.  Why not start a thread called "MMJ are wankers and they hate the UK (and black people)".  And there, people can say everything they need to make themselves feel better.  And none of the "uberfans" will interrupt.

On a another note I hate that fucking word uber.

i support the european fans' viewpoints of being upset (see my devil's advocate thread), and i think the management and whatnot havent done anyone favours in keeping silent, but i dont see coming on a band's forum and calling them liars and downplaying a serious illness.  its extra asinine to claim to have some mysterious proof to disprove the reasons in question, then not being able to back it up.

if i lived in europe, i'd be sad for the cancellations too. i'd also be pretty pissed if i ended up losing money on reservations, plane tickets...
that said, i wouldn't want the dubious claim to fame that "jim james died at MY show"... his pneumonia resulted in heart problems. personally, i'd rather wait a bit longer than have jim collapse on stage and die. no refunds for that!
furthermore, MMJ is not in a U2 or Coldplay bracket where they will make so much money off of album sales and endorsements that they can afford not to tour. MMJ probably makes most of their money from touring so i'm certain that cancelling their tour hurt their pocketbook a fair bit. not just that, but MMJ's cult following began in the benelux countries and i doubt they would stiff them intentionally.
i'm not going to attack you for being upset, i just think it's not very rational. if you lived in auckland or minsk or rio, you'd NEVER get to see them. so consider yourself lucky.

Like it or not, I have as much right as you to an opinion, however many posts you might have made.

You don't own this forum. Get over it.

When did you post an 'opinion'?

Would you care to elaborate?

Or is that just a snappy, little throwaway line you hoped noone would take you up on?

Complaining that MMJ won't come to Europe to me doesn't quite define something as opinion in the context that these trivial arguments are in.
They will come soon enough, don't fret.

Is it because of the tulips or the drugs?! My guess would be the tulips because the guys seems to be such gentlemen. ;D

You were probably thinking of this Siouxtribe.  One of my favorites.

"Don't worry about a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin': "Don't worry about a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!"

Rise up this mornin',
[glb]Smiled with the risin' sun[/glb],
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin' sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin', ("This is my message to you-ou-ou:")

Singin': "Don't worry 'bout a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."
Singin': "Don't worry (don't worry) 'bout a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!"

Rise up this mornin',
Smiled with the risin' sun,
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin' sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin', "This is my message to you-ou-ou:"

Singin': "Don't worry about a thing, worry about a thing, oh!
Every little thing gonna be all right. Don't worry!"
Singin': "Don't worry about a thing" - I won't worry!
"'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."

Singin': "Don't worry about a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right" - I won't worry!
Singin': "Don't worry about a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."
Singin': "Don't worry about a thing, oh no!
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!
