I will post a thorough review of both nights tomorrow after I've gotten some sleep. In the meanwhile let me just say that tonight was Amazing, Magical, Surreal, Unbelievable, and Damn Good!! Thank you Jim, Carl, Tommy, Bo, and Patrick. Thank you Boston Pops. Goodnight!
Can't wait to hear the recordings :)
Setlists and stats updated in the setlist thread
Did some one record it? I went last night and it was awesome. I got At Dawn, Run Thru and I will sing. On video on my digital camera. They look and sound o.k. I will post them over the weekend.
Also here are the 3 photos I took

Majestic!
The scenery reminds me alot of the At Dawn Cover. This is by no means a coincidence. Jim has been planning this from day one.
Majestic I say
:o
I was cracking up when they played Run Thru' like I had wistfully joked about in the other Boston Pops thread. "Oh Shit Run!" in the middle of 'proper old symphony halll' and a bunch of little old ladies out for a night at th symphony :D

maybe they thought what i used to think, which was "don't sit, run!"
;)
What an unbelievable place to see the band. They seemed to fit right in with the Pops. Keith Lockhart was rocking out.
Some of the old blue hairs "out for an evening with the pops" even seemed to enjoy it. I'll bet MMJ sells some records to a different demographic after those 2 great shows.
I can't say enough how amazing that was!
Anyone stay afterwards for The Slip?
We had a woman who was probably closer to 80 than 70 sitting 3 seats down - it was great to watch.
You could tell she had a really open mind and probably had never, EVER seen a proper "rock concert". It just made my wife and I smile when at the beginning of "Wordless Chorus" she was tapping the program on her knee.
All in all it was the most beautidul presentation of MMJ's music that you could have imagined. I know it was recorded and I'm sure they won't pass up the chance to release it.
In the meantime - whoever out there taped it...please set it free on archive.org! Or send me a message ;D
We loved her!
Jim made "Wordles Chorus" a beautiful theatrical piece and it was mesmerizing to watch the symphony singing the chorus right along with him.
When Jim came out for "Bermuda Highway" at the end of the show I wept it was so fuckin' sweet.
Gawd I wish you all could have been there...maybe they will get a chance to do this with other orchestras around North America if word of this performance gets around
we just got back to our casa and we are tired. but i will post deetz soon and i'm sure dot will too.......BUT IT WAS AWESOME
hey i didn't realize there were two boston threads. i'm so very lost.
dude everyone was into run thru. the entire symph hall was clapping it out big time.
i had big issues, and by that, i mean i had an issue with staying in my seat. i mean we stepped it up... we had on fancy dresses and heels. there were old folks and class everywhere, but dammit i wanted to get out of my seat and dance and punch people or ANYTHING. when wordless chorus is being played live in front of you, how do you keep your ass in a chair? the conductor for the Pops was screaming along during wordless. he was lovin' it.
p.s. we heard a bit of The Slip but didn't stay because we were super exhausted and running on fumes. they sounded delightful. the room they were in was bizarre. i felt like i was at a 1999 senior prom hosted in a Ramada ballroom. it kind of ruled.
staying in our seats was really hard, esp. with those A+++ horns during run thru that blew everyone's minds. hearing i will sing you songs with the orchestra just took it to another level.
we set up shop at our table with a bottle of america's finest, korbel champagne, and proceeded to begin drinking. the first half of the show was really cool, i loved hearing the pops do american in paris. it was cool to see the mix of the crowd between young kids in t-shirts and older folks who were probably members and just there because they had tickets anyway. interesting jumble.
basically, you know how when something sounds so good you want to punch something? that's how it was when at dawn started. it was just an amazing feeling to be sitting there hearing that guitar start and knowing we were experiencing this sound in symphony hall. wordless chorus had some xtreme bear dancing and james brown moves which definitely delighed our section of the floor. i think i blacked out during steam engine because i couldn't believe i was hearing it. i've always wanted to hear it live.
one of my favorite things was run thru, just all of it. and i loved the dude standing across from us that just stood the whole time with this fist in the air. he didn't move, just stood, saluting. he ruled. we had to get up on that one and clap and move around, it was just too awesome sounding. staying seated was pretty imposs.
the extended standing ovations ruled, i think they really enjoyed themselves and i know we had a ton of fun. and we greatly enjoyed our champagne. it wasted me mentally and physically, although we did check out the slip for a while and they sounded good. that ballroom they played in felt like it was made for a 7th grade dance, which made it even better in a way.
good times in boston. the city treated us well, too, and we liked all we did there. i even got a crab hat at the aquarium which i will wear proudly on the streets of austin.
I have a new signature thanks to your post.
you rule, corey.
also, on our way home, we got into a cab and the driver was blaring The Eagles. It was the scene straight out of Lebowski. It ruled.
Can you change it? I hate the fucking eagles.
this is my new favourite thread. the only thing that could make it better are pictures.
especially pictures of a crab hat. that needs to go in the memberpicz stat.
i'll put an order in and see if we can make that picture happen.
p.s. why do i never get bored at jacket shows? i've been to quite a few shows in my day where i've had to set the snooze alarm.

it is the reason that your neck hurts the next day, and you feel like you just went through a vortex of otherworlds. i think it's pretty much about giving and receiving - they give it, and we receive it, and they don't stop, so neither do we. maybe?
corey, i want you to know that i totally got it. :)

In high school I actually fell asleep during a Georgia Satellites show. I don't know what was more embarassing, falling asleep during a show or being at a Georgia Satellites show. In my defense they were the opener. I don't forsee EVER falling asleep during a Jacket show.
i can also safely say that i'll never get bored at an M. Ward or Sharon Jones show.
i really wanted to scream that i hated the eagles to the cab driver, but he might've taken offense.
here's a pretty good indication of how great the show sounded with the pops. this clip was posted with permission from the orchestra, and band. you can't download it but you can heard it.
best, geoff

besides there being no bass and the drums sounding reaaaaaaaally small....this sounds like soundboard quality...this has to be released in the near future
PETITION TIME PEOPLE
btw it can be dowloaded if you click the next in the paragraph indicating where the clip is

Was anyone else a little disappointed in the balance between the band and the orchestra? I just listened to that clip from the Globe and it sounds a lot stronger than what I heard. I was in the first balcony, dead center, and could only hear pieces of the orchestra throughout the night. I'd love to see a release of the show so I can enjoy it at its best mix, though. That clip is great.
Yeah, from where I was....(1st balcony, slightly to the right,) I was hoping that the Orchestra could have been a little louder, but after hearing the clips, the orchestra seemed to sound alot louder.
That's why I can't wait for the files! Anyone find anything on archive.org?
When are you coming back to Boston, Jim James?

Better to hear only pieces of the orchestra than of MMJ!
I was on the floor the first night, row O, and you could hear the symphony just fine. The second night I was in the balcony, and the guitars were overpowering everything except Jim's voice (which was magical, that venue seemed to soak up and swell the reverberations. awesome).
I sure hope a soundboard mix is released, either underground or at the local retailers.
Very, very cool shots. Thanks for the heads-up. Blender always takes the best pics.
So is there any word on recordings? I remember Mofro did a couple shows with the Jacksonville Symphony and the only way it got recorded was by a dude who brought in those tiny stealth mics. I don't know how it sounded.
I think it's a tricky thing to release a symphony record. BUT, here's hoping this sucker sees the light of day!
Andrew
QuoteBlender always takes the best pics.
agreed. blender is the camera player in the band. beautiful pictures.
and funny, i was just wondering about those tuxedo shirts and then i saw the WONDERFUL bear.
ah man. what special nights of music those must've been.
