I'd rank it like this:
1) Lay Low
2) One Big Holiday
3) Anytime
4) Steam Engine
5) Gideon
What a newbie looking list.
It's a cool list newbie :)
I'd go for:
Phone Went West
One Big Holiday
Magheetah
Hopefully
Dancefloors
Haven't seen any of the new stuff live. Yet ;D
Dondante
OBH
Wordless Chorus
At Dawn
Gideon
Run Thru
Anytime
One Big Holliday
Mahgeetah
Don Dante
I would put down Phone Went West but they really don't play that one. I've seen them do it twice, the first time I saw them and this last time that I saw them. I remember watching one of the live shows that was being streamed when I first got on this site and my jaw dropping at the Phone Went West.........Hair Flying and 5 guys whipping the shit out of three chords like I had never seen in my life.

The ISM's promo clip that ends with PWW was my wifes' first introduction to the band. She then went on to name them the 'Oki no kami bando' which means big hair band! ;D
MMJ will always be the 'big hair band' in our house...
I've yet to see the band live (roll on Sept!!!)
Phone Went West & Steam Engine from 2003 09 26 & OBH from the Randolph Street Fest (2005 06 18 ) are my favs from the live recordings that I've heard.
I have only seen MMJ live once and One Big Holiday, Run Thru, Lay Low, Wordless Chorus, etc. were obviously wonderful live, but the song that really blew me away at that particular show was I Think I'm Going To Hell. The last verse really sent a chill up my spine.
As if I could narrow this list down any... well, they always place these songs, or at least they have to every show I've been to...
Dondante
Golden
Mahgeeta
Off the Record
One Big Holiday
Run Thru
The Way That He Sings
Here's some songs they should definately rock out more frequently, in my opinion...
At Dawn
O Is The One That Is Real
Sooner
Knot Comes Loose
Gideon
The Bear
I Think I'm Going To Hell
I Will Sing You Songs
(Okay, I might as well name half of the discography)
The great thing about MMJ is that you can totally rock out to it with your significant other... there are some great 'cling-time' songs laced up with the 'rock your balls off' stuff... Kick ass, I love this fuckin' band.
It may sound funny but I really am starting like off the record live-the crowd digs the vocals and when they get kind of groovy/phsycidelic at the end
o is the one is rocked out pretty regularly in my opinion....but i think you're right, it does need to be more-so
at dawn needs rocking out in terms of song length....i've always said it needs a massive intro jam before the vocals start
1) run thru melts the face
2) phone went west wants the show to go on forever
3) mahgeetah ends a show perfectly
4) and one big holiday creates new fans of the band everytime i see it live when they're an opener, i've never seen a disappointed person after that song has been played....although i am kind of enamored by the stage a bit....so looking around is very limited
I completly agree on "O is the One" they just fucking kill that one to deaf everytime.
It's been a while since I've listened to Bonnaroo 04, but I listened to it yesterday and remembered how much I love "Phone Went West" live. Very glad to see that one on this year's Roo setlist. It wouldn't hurt my feeling at all if they'd start playing it again more often.
Here's a quick list.
1. Phone Went West
That fucking rock-out at the end doesn't get much cooler.
2. Dancefloors
Completely floored my ass at the Rites of Spring show. That crunch-crunch at the end (where the horns are on the album) is fantastic. It totally makes up for there not being horns playing at the show.
3. I Think I'm Going To Hell
I don't think I've ever sang as loud as I did when they played this at City Hall last fall. I'm sorry to whoever was standing around me. I was totally in the moment.
"DEVILS AND DEMONS ARE COMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
The list goes on!
RUN THRU I can't believe how they can stall-out the riff on that song. Its just crushing to listen to.
THINK I'M GONING TO HELL the melody just sends shivers like no other.
I WILL SING SONGS The opening chord from Jim lifts my feet off the floor everytime.
ONE IN THE SAME I heard this the first time I saw MMJ at the fillmore in 04. It was so quiet you could hear every nuance of Jim and his guitar. how sweet it was.
LAY LOW I'm beginning to love Jim's cabaret style lounge singing stage antics on this one. the jam at the end is pure delight.
seeing them play phone went west is what sold me on the genius of the band...
I will sing you songs
Honest Man
I will be there when you die
Don Dante
1. One Big Holiday
2. The Bear
3. At Dawn
4. War Begun
5. Picture of You
Honorable mentnion: Tyrone (only saw it once, but it kicked my ass)
i had a few of their bootlegs in my collection over the past few years, but didn't get turned on to them til it still moves came out...
that said, lately i'm really enjoying 'what a wonderful man' and also wordless chorus....
those just stick out though...the band really rocks too damn hard and well to have any clunkers..
Quote...the band really rocks too damn hard and well to have any clunkers..
amen--how to pick any group of tunes and say those are the ones! I can't do it.... ;D

it just
feels like a big outdoor concert song. i feel the wind when i hear that song. i think about warm beer and hot sun on my head as they day is winding down into night. i love that damn song.
it also remains the number one favourite song to sing in the shower in my house. 2 years running.
you aint woman enough by loretta lynn is 2nd. ;)
QuoteWow, I figured someone would have said Cobra by now.
Unfortunately this is rarely played in its entirety--rather small bits and teasers...
id love to see cobra, id kill a man to see corba live. right now, ive een enjoying War Begun live, one of the versions we shared on another thread. id also love to see the "new" dondante live. i like how its a tad longer, and the sax just adds a whole new element at the beginning.
had a few friends over this past weekend, and we rocked out to the Roo '06concert. i have the video as well as the cd version, so we got watch it and enjoy it to its fullest(at least from inside a home watching a computer screen. but at least my PA system was hooked up :o ) successfully blew some minds, and converted some non-beleivers
i wanna hear rolling back live.....i might burst into a thousand pieces and float up into the reverb in that song
