Title: Pukkelpop report
Post by: Chills on Aug 18, 2006, 06:53 AM
Great show yesterday. The energy level was up from the start. The sound was loud and glorious. Excellent song selection (no Don Dante though). Don't know if this is in right order:

Wordless
Gideon
Holiday
Wonderful Man
Record
Way That He Sings
Golden
Hell (!)
Anytime
Run Thru

Hell was a nice surprise, magnificently played. Other highlights were Wordless, the end jam in Off The Record and Run Thru. Run Thru just destroys everything in its path, amazing closer. Carl went crazy (all through the show actually) and knocked over his mic stand at the end. ROCK AND ROLL.

Here are some pictures I stole from another website. Best not reproduced in the gallery without permission I guess.

 ;D

What can I say...

Blistering set, great song selection for a festival, crystal clear sound, loud as hell and with an unmatched intensity. 50 minutes of pure R 'n' R bliss.

The day started very good with GOMEZ, continued nicely with MAGIC NUMBERS and then sank to a low with WE ARE SCIENTIST. I didn't know they attracted little boys and girls; we saw a mosh-pit with 14/15 year olds, wicked)

We then pushed to the rail and put ourselves into our RnR mode for:

Wordless Chorus: Strike a pose! Jim put up some funky dances, even tried a moonwalk, and sang like a devil.
Gideon: This song is so much stronger live then on record.
OBH: Crazy, just crazy. Their biggest hit but they still perform it like it's their first time
Wonderful Man: as powerful as it was short: really short, really powerful
The way that he sings: Great song. great singing, and I got stunned againg about how good these lyrics are
Golden: My favourite MMJ song. Very good rendition. Jim had to hold himself not to go jamming on his acoustic guitar
Hell: Brave choice for a festival, wonderful song, audience was silent, which is always a good sign.
Off The Record: Not my favorite song, but the '2nd' part was just over the top. Jim lost a string but went on and on, and on..He would have gone on forever if the didn't go into
Anytime: perfectly orchestrated chaos!
Run Thru: unbelievable. Killer song. The power that the band sent to the audience was devastating. All 5 just went berserk!

During the show, we got treated by some nice comments from Jim, how he felt we were all listening and how he would love to to sit and chat  with all of us... :)

I thought 50 minutes would be short, but with the energy this band is consuming, Those 50 minutes lasted like a lifetime. Thanks guys.

Final note to all: Go out and see this band live. They're on top of their game!

PS, Radiohead was very good, but they were no match for MMJ, not by far.

there's more pics and a review up at:
http://www.proximusgoformusic.be/nl/report.php?id=131768

babel translation makes it even better:

A world championship ' reverb ' should exist there, then My Morning jacket would belong to the kransje top favourites. More galm cannot sit there according to the laws of the fysica on a voice and a jet ear. The group around the flamboyante Jim James implied himself however a beetje and chose for snoeiharde, rechtoe rechtaan treatment. Wordless and Gideon were powerful rockers who did not shun the large gesture. Also One piglet holiday (demented countryriff, killing bass) and Wonderful man blew our complete: this is rock n roll in its nature. Just with applied My Morning took jacket what gas: splendid countrynummer with a prominent role for the stalk guitar. James considered it time for a communication: I feel that we are present in a relation where your really to me listen. I'm ate peace. Gladly done. There was possible rocking still a quiet number of the finished, ijselijke Hell, and afterwards again took a commencement. Run thru was the apocalyptic final: roarring woestijnrock, with James in the role of the preaching Mozes. God well concert.

thanks for the review Mr. Baxter, I hope you had a great time too...

These Babel translations remain very quotable : "roarring woestijnrock"; gotta love that!

BTW: I read a shitty remark in my morning paper about the show. Some reporter (who'll burn in hell) said MMJ played very well, but "Neil Young has done this before". So let's all stop making any more music: Neil Young and Bob Dylan have it all done before  >:(

What a serious pile of gobshit! Damn that made my angry

Yeah I read that review as well. While it was ridiculous and just wrong (does Wordless Chorus sound like Neil Young?), it didn't bother me at all this time.

For all you dutch speaking/reading people, Knackblog has a tiny review from the show. It's a short but very positive one, so I thought I'd add it here:

http://www2.knack.be/blog/blog.jsp?siteID=71&sectionID=33&blogartID=589&RMG_CURRENT_PAGE_71_7=2&mwebtag=BLOG/Festival

babel translation

"He who My Morning observe jacket of on afstandje, would swear that it concerns the youngster broertjes of Metallica. Nothing is less where: Jim James and are half-measures vermeidden itself on Pukkelpop again in acoustic countryballads which without a lot have you, tear open hymnes to massive and fully electrified - a tikje epic, but never over-the-top. Simply impressive how James beat to sing the water in the shoes seemingly nonchalant, chewing on a fictitious strohalm the complete Marquee."

NICE PICS CC!
Title: Re: Pukkelpop report
Post by: Darunia on Aug 20, 2006, 04:25 PM
I finished them :) Sometimes I changed the order and added something, hope you like it.

First the GoForMusic one:

QuoteIf there was a world championship in the 'reverb' category, then MMJ would be one of the main contenders for the title. According to the laws of physics, there just can't be more resonance on a voice and a guitar.

The group based round the flamboyant Jim James was a bit more reserved however, and chose the more straightforward approach. Wordless Chorus and Gideon are powerful rockers and also One Big Holiday (with a demented countryriff and a killer bass) and What a Wonderful Man completely blew us away: this is rock 'n roll in its most pure and essential form.

It was only with Golden that MMJ slowed down a bit: a beautiful country song with a prominent role for the steel guitar. James thought it was the right time for an announcement: 'I feel like we're in a relationship where we can really listen to each other. I'm at peace.' You're welcome Jim.

The band took the time for one more slow song, the icy 'Hell', after which they started rocking out again. Run thru was the apocalyptic finale: furious desert rock, with James as the preaching Mozes.A concert so good, it was sacrilegious.

The first paragraph of this review sucks, I could've written a better one myself :P
The Knack one: (which is a much better one I might add, it's also an actual quality magazine).

QuoteAnyone who sees MMJ from a distance would swear that they're Metallica's younger brothers. Nothing could be further from the truth: Jim James and his companions can play acoustic country ballads that, without you taking notice, evolve into grand and electrified hymns. A tad epic, but never over the top. It's absolutely amazing how James succeeded in bringing the Marquee to its knees in a seemingly casual fashion, while chewing on an imaginary piece of straw, Huck Finn wise.

I also saw them of couse and I was so impressed... What sucks about these festivals is that there are so many great bands and you can't get a good spot to see all the ones you want. I rushed out of the Zero 7 concert (which was also really good) to get close to MMJ, but I never could get as close as I wanted. Still I enjoyed the gig, it was the one that had the biggest impact on me. They're one of the most enthusiastic acts I've ever seen, and I stood there in awe for the entire show. The only thing I wish for now is that they come back to Belgium real soon, where I can line up early and get in the front rows.

About the language thing: it's said that we Flemish have a knack for languages, since we have to adopt so often (The Dutch language isn't that big globally). Also there's a French speaking part here, and most of us easily learn French. It doesn't work the other way round though: the Walloons don't speak Dutch at all :P I forgot most of my French when I left high school though, and went to study Dutch/English linguistics/literature. I speak English just as naturally as I speak Dutch, doesn't matter.

The 'you guys actually listen' comment is made by a lot of American bands, but when Jim said it, it really sounded like he meant it.

report from goddeau:
http://www.goddeau.com/content/view/2634/0/1/1/

babel version:

Even if of at the beginning My Morning jacket try the Marquee with welgemikte seize mokerslagen to the throat. It will succeed them almost the full fifty minutes. Too often we do not see a zanger going this way during the openingssong as Jim James. To remain eventually nevertheless on the correct side of the meter. The American shrieks this way and soundly strident, this way tremendous concerning that podium during "Wordless Chorus" that energy producers twist are name on a bierviltje noted. As if someone him backstage unseen what had introduced forced up duracell batteries. This was roar with air, everything in the fight throw, give a powerfully loud rag. Just as, during the grown still "Hell", it can bite to breath what can more moderate, but then the bred stier sand for the last numbers. Massive.

This is from the Cutting Edge website:

http://www.cuttingedge.be/gigs/mymorningjacket/20060817

(sorry, Babel translation only, If Dariunia still has some energy left to translate this thing in decent english, go ahead!)

"Moving hard

My Morning Jacket-frontman Jim James ailed year earlier this with a pneumonia, as a result of which the planned concert of the group in Belgium was cancelled. A serious setback, because with "z" they had added a new master work exactly to their discography. Pukkelpop offered a beautiful chance on revanche. The Marquee ran storm and got where it came for: much material from "z", with most podiumbestendige the "It still completed moves" and former plate work. The vijftal finished Kentucky silently but very floated. Some a time thanked Jim James public for its lustre willingness and expressed he is feeling of inner rest that game on the Kiewitse podium at him brought about. Beetje, but publicly enjoyed melo visible, danced an end in round at the funky single "off the record" and could lose itself in perfectly swelling "Gideon" or the melancholie of "The way that he sings". The made songkeuze were further more than sticking out: the subtiliteit and melody of "z" (what opened "Wordless chorus" with its ingenious rhythm sexy flatlied refuse) stood in strident contrast with very hard rocking and the still more massive melodies (the someone hurricane strength of "run thru" and "One piglet has measured holiday"?) of the former work. Compromising between tenderising and oerend rapidly, which is My Morning jacket on its best. Was a this perfectly concert? Not just as close. Large minus was the acoustics in the Marquee. Too beklemmend for the volume and feeling of weidsheid that the group frequently produces and provides on the fog horn with a voice with which James are deunen sing. As a result, overschreeuwde he itself meermaals and frequently silted up the sparkling gepingel in frosted and oorverdovende geluidsbrij (that version of "What a wonderful man" stands at these with stip in our migraine top 10 noted). Nevertheless My Morning jacket as rockact more relevant than ever and served they is on Pukkelpop a row sublime songs that we in the autumn best once more in a national room want herbeluisteren. Lords concert organizers, start your bookings!
