Title: attention houstonians, we are hated by the world
Post by: slappymcnoodles on Sep 14, 2006, 10:52 PM
why is houston the butthole of the world? we get screwed over so hard here. last years show in houston was canceled, i was told by the managment they would return within the year. well, the fall tour dates are out. two shows in dallas, one in austin and, zero in houston. if you say your coming back to houston, keep your word.

holy shit get over it dude.  there's only so much time in the day.  talk to the entire west coast or canada and see how they feel.  all you got do is drive your bitchy ass a couple hours to dallas.  the second night is on a Friday even.

well that sucks but maybe they had there fingers crossed when they promised you.

well, anyway, there is an open date on the 19th.  sometimes they add dates later.  and it's not always the bands fault.  this is coming up quick and maybe the venues were all booked around that time.  they aren't out to get you.

i know there are alot of factors that played into the planning of this tour, i just had a really shitty day and i just found out i wont be able to see my favorite band. it just seems like alot of the bands i like pass over houston for austin and s/a venues all the time.

I can dig it.  if st. louis wasn't on there i would have been pretty disapointed as well.

that sucks, but make the drive to austin. it's worth it when they are in reasonable driving distance. you might get another chance, but for now just go with it and let your mind be blown. after the show, you won't care or know where you are anyway. BECAUSE YOUR FACE WILL BE GONE.

You should all move to Louisville.  We're the biggest city in Kentucky.  And I'll have you over for dinner.

SWEEET! They're coming to Austin; now I don't have to drive to Knoxville.
slappymcnoodles- if you're mom does let you drive to austin, then you can pass the hours in line with me and my friends at stubbs.

bump...

Though I as well am a bit disappointed by no makeup Houston date, I'm not that surprised. Most bands, or whoever sets up their tour rather, won't go out of their way to get a date in Houston. Thankfully there are some other great bands coming to town in the near future, but, they're not the Jacket. Who knows, maybe they'll pull one of their ass and schedule a Houston show sometime. I'm gonna make the drive for atleast one, probably Austin, which I don't really mind, except that there will be a whole lot more people there that probably care way less than I do. Austin's just like that in that whatever you wanna do, there's always gonna be a crapload of people your age doing the same thing. Constant people traffic. That show at the Engine Room here in '04 was disappointing since maybe only a couple hundred people showed up, but at the same time was that much better because of it. The more air and space for the Jacket sound to fill and bounce off my ears, the better. Cheers to those who get to attend a show that they don't have to get in a car and spend a ticket's worth of gas money on. Things could ALWAYS be worse.

i can see both sides of this:
it is kind of a bummer that MMJ cancelled the houston show on the last tour to film an episode of austin city limits. even more of a bummer that the date isnt being remade.

the reality is, the houston scene is pretty weak, even though it is getting better with venues like warehouse live and meridian. bands that consistently sell out dallas and austin dont sell out houston.

that said, i am going to all three texas shows. if you arent old enough to hit up the saturday show on your own, take your parents with you and make a liltte family trip out of this. thats what i used to do when i was a youngn.

Now that Houston has the smaller midsize venues like those you mentioned, so many more groups are starting to come to town. Before all you had was somewhere like Engine Room (place suuux, MMJ probably hated it very much they didn't wanna come back) and Numbers(which would be a perfect place for MMJ to play) and some really small indie type spots (Walter's), then the next biggest type place would be Verizon, which is basically a big, lifeless, corporate sponsored spot that holds 5-6k.  That's a huge jump, capacity-wise. I've been to warehouse and the meridian a few times and both are definitely more akin to where a rock show should be played at.

I understand the band and everyone involved wanting to go to cities where people who care show up and money can be made, but honestly they would just about sell out either warehouse or the meridian if they came back. I personally could guarantee getting 10 people to come, but whatever, doesn't matter.

Yeah, it sucks slappy. But man, you're 17! Imagine if you were 37, like my old ass - I've only got what, maybe 40 more years of MMJ shows to look forward to if I'm lucky. You'll probably be 160, what with medical technology progressing the way it will, before the last ever strains of "Death Is The Easy Way" waft into the ether...
I've had to travel at least 4 hours every time I've had the good fortune to attend an MMJ show, but I'm sure they'll play Oklahoma for me someday, and Houston for you. Patience, young slappy.

Seems like lots of bands are playing in Houston:

I can't imagine being 17 and not being able to rock. Drove to New Orleans (3 hours) 2 years in a row to The Day of Rock and Roll (Boston, Van Halen, Blue Oyster Cult, Sammy Hagar, Cheap Trick, Foreigner, The Eagles, Nazareth, Heart)when I was 15 and 16; and tickets were $10!!!  Plus, drove to Memphis (3 hours) when I was 16 to see The Who. Seems like it was easier to do back then. It was definently easier to walk in with a bong in your sock b/c all you needed to prepare was being able to walk, blue jeans and a tube sock (oh, and some weed. You just stashed that in your underwear.)

To this day, I despise security at shows. Especially the big venues. Bunch of thug cop wannabees. I took my 14 year old niece to see Weezer 3 years ago, and we were on the last row of one of those amphitheaters and she's like 4'7" and was standing on her seat and some security guard with a mullet and sunglasses grabbed her shoulder and told her to sit down. She went from blissfully enjoying her first rock show to squinting throuh asses and elbows to get  a glimpse of the band.

Are we killing rock and roll?

What's the name of this thread, anyway...

That's a special talent.  Walking from the car to the bathroom at the venue with your goods stashed in your underwear or shoe and praying that it won't slip out at just the wrong moment.  I remember once having my one hitter fall down my pants leg and making what seemed to be a 120 db "cling cling cling cling".  I was only 10 feet inside the door and every pot head in the whole venue snapped there head around with a smile on there face.  Yet somehow the brilliant rent-a-cop was too busy frisking chics to notice! ;D

OK Houstonians, now that we've had time to lick our wounds and sulk a bit, have any of you guys/gals bought tickets for the Austin, Dallas, or other shows? I'm goin to Austin for sure and will try my damndest to go to the second one in Dallas. We should make a sign or form together as a group at these shows just so the band knows exactly who we are and that we came. How about everyone dress up as their favorite forest animal or even an astronaut? So who's making the trek?

It's official. 3 consecutive nights of The Jacket.

Now I just have to make sure that I don't work nights that week!
