Howdee Doo Dee

sorry not Loper...

Just back from Edinburgh gig....c.400 people.... Strange venue...kind of like a vault/cavern kind of idea....think the Cavern in Liverpool when the Beatles played....

Interesting sound...Naturally Jim was soaked in Reverb (Alexis Quadraverb)  they seemed really happy but from time 2 time I wondered if the kit was miked!  The engineer was working with tihein house rig and the desk looked real old...but he managed to give a well balanced sound..I just felt they needed a bit more grunt!!

Live..amazing!!  they set was cut short because a 'club' was due to start in the same venue....you know some random DJ playing some happy tunes ....

I hope the band had a great gig...they seemed to enjoy..

Spoke to a few of the crew who gave me a setlist. Bit different !!  Well its good night from me...sure someone will post a bettter review from bonnie Scotland!

Regards

Mr L

Really interesting to see how varied the set lists are from one gig to the next.

Shows a lot of thought goes into these nights of pleasure.

Appreciated.

Hi Doc, guys,

Its the morning after the night before here in sunny Edinburgh.

What a night!!!!!   What a gig!!!!!   Jim was in awesome voice and the band were so so tight.

I have to say that I thought the sound was great. A beautiful balance between the whole band with Jim soaring  high into the ether. This was high in my top  gigs of all time list.  Jim was really gutted about the early finish (10.15ish) that he insisted on coming out and playing a last acoustic number. The early finish was due to a dance club upstairs starting up and the band were making the walls shudder!

The set list posted above needs just a little embellishment.

The opening number was Jim solo with I Needed it Most.

Then for an encore we had a really rocking version of The Way That He Sings, the finish of which brought  the house down.  Jim was really on a high and just felt he couldn't leave it  there despite the pressure to shut up shop, so he came out on his own for a really heartfelt rendition of Bermuda Highway.

I wont forget this gig, ever.   Jim's perfect pitch to the climax of  The Bear will stay  with me, surely one of the most beautiful endings to a  song ever composed.  ::)

Bring on 22nd Sept.  at  The Astoria :)

To be able to see Jim solo, the full band in a small club and then a big theatre venue is a real privilege and one that is strongly recommended for all who haven't yet done it . It just shows how versatile this band is.

Sorry for the endless ramblings, but this is my best live MMJ experience, ever! To think that they didn't even play such standbys as One Big Holiday, Steam Engine, Mageetah, Phone Went West, I Will Sing You Songs, Run Thru, to name but a few, took absolutely nothing away from the experience.

I'm going to go and lay down now 8)

Wow. Lucky UK'ers. Ok, I was very happy with the festival set, but damn, these club shows are the only real deal.

Thanks loper. You and Mr Laurel make me feel I was there with you (wish I had been  ;)). I'm really impressed that they vary the set list from one night to the next.

And chills, you're right, these shows are the real deal. It's amazing to be able to see and hear them close up. I think they like it too. Are you going to the Astoria? (I think I remember encouraging you to come last time and it didn't work out.)

Nah, can't make it this time.
And god yes, that was a bummer last year. I'm kind of anxious to try such a thing again. The disappointment was so big last time, with all the tickets, pounds, train reservations etc. in hand. Not to mention the drag to try to cancel the reservations. Seeing all the UK set lists roll in still hurts a little. It shouldn't but hey, can't help it.

But I promise, if Jim ever reschedules that DJ set, I'm there to join you on the dancefloor  ;)

Sounds like a great show guys, but did anyone catch "Just One Thang" Maybe they heard the guys Kentucky/Nashville accents and spelled it.

Holy she ite,

What a day, what a gig.

Spoke to Jim and the rest of the band in the pub across the road from the gig. Jim didn't eat, we gave up our seats for the band to eat (the place was packed), got a guest list place for our ticketless mate from Bo and Carl. Cheers guys.

Right up the front at the gig totally losing it. It's been a long time coming since Tuts all those years ago. Absolutely worth the wait. Still haven't come down yet.

Got some great photos which I will try to post some time soon. Never again will I see this band in such an intimate venue and I will treasure last night's gig in my memory forever. It was the end of my honeymoon after all.

Ta.

Yeah, pretty cool.

I meant to say in my last post  : when I was speaking to Bo he explained that they couldn't really cut loose in the Edinburgh Venue. Hence the pared down set although the gig sounded pretty full on to me.

I am listening to a CD I bought at the gig, it's by Less The Band and it's definately caught my attention - spacey.

I was that ticketless guy!

Like to thank the band for their good grace and for putting on a top gig.

Will not make the same mistake again by leaving it too late to buy a ticket.

Cheers

Hi makemeatape. I met you at the show (the girl from Texas), and you took a picture of me and my boyfriend with the band in the background. If it came out at all and you still have it, could you e-mail it to me? I'd really appreciate it! I didn't wanna have to hold my camera but sort of regretted not bringing it. I didn't expect to see the band outside beforehand. I probably would have asked for a picture, something I wouldn't have dreamed of doing since junior high.
Anyway, amazing show wasn't it?! Completely worth a flight from Texas!

Hey Kate,

Consider it done (when I manage to get them onto my computer - shouldn't be too long).

Top gig and total dedication on your part. Lovely to meet you and your man.
