Title: OKONOKOS Theatre Screening Reviews.
Post by: BH on Oct 30, 2006, 11:24 PM
I didn't see anything like this so I thought I would start the topic.  I just got back and I am still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor.  Fantastic.  I don't even know where to begin about the content I saw.  Fantastic lighting, cinematography (if you call it that ???) and sound.  The only problem is they cut out It Beats 4 U, O is the One, Dondante, I will Sing and Lay Low.  Did they think it would be too much for the average movie goer?  They were wrong! :)  Anyway, they had the DVD with the chorale for sale for $15. What a deal.  And a poster.  So now I am going to end up with two of these. ;D We had a crowd of about maybe 40.  I had 3 Fat Tires.  And someone who bought the DVD and looked like a big fan won the guitar so that was cool,  I guess....damnit ;)

I guess the cool thing is I still have 5 songs plus chorale to enjoy.

(Oh, and did your film showing actually freeze up at the end of Mahgetah right before the bear attack?

As long as the other one comes in the mail like it should in the next couple of days, no problem.  I will let you know when I get it.

thanks a lot man, i went to get the one from the lousrecords presale the other day but they had ended the sale already.  unfortunately, no indie shops around here are selling the dvd either, so i'll have to get it at borders or somewhere bigger, minus acoustic chorale

I was disappointed they didn't play the whole setlist as well....oh well..though i would have enjoyed don dante on the big screen! i also thought the audience might have been more into the music but i guess everyone were just blown away by the whole experience. tommy was there briefly, he left before the show started and i saw Patricks wife but no Patrick....'Steam Engine' was the highlight for me.

amazing.  i feel like i just got back from a show.  i thought the vibe in the theatre was good.  there were a lot of the usual suspects in the audience which was nice.  the movie was breathtaking.  steam engine was a huge highlight for me as well.  And I think we finally have a definitive version of One Big Holiday.  it fucking killed!  the bear mulling was a nice twist.  Other highlights include run thru and magheeta.  I also would've like to seen I will sing you songs and dondante but so it goes.

also, tommy stayed for the whole show, he was sitting in front of me.  it was funny to see him react to his close-ups. must be weird to see your face 30 feet tall in the movie theatre you went to growing up.

I've never headbanged to a movie before. It was very hard to hold still in there. Especially during Run Thru. For that I just kinda let loose regardless.

i walked out when the credits rolled.  Magheeta was the last song then the bear did his thing, roll credits, and then they gave away the guitar.  I guess there's two versions of the movie because there's no way I missed them.  strange.

they weren't in my movie.

on a separate note.....

PATRICK RULES!

I too felt weird getting overly excited.  Should you clap in a movie?  I think I may have made a bit of a fool of myself.  I have notice noboby has a problem cheering for a sports team during a big game shown at a bar so how is this any different.  Either way they can't hear you!

QuoteShould you clap in a movie?

You're obviously not a fanboy, are you? I'm not just referring to MMJ, but I'm talking about being a fanboy in general. When the Star Wars movies were re-released 10 years or so ago, that was the first time I ever clapped in a movie. I lost my shit when the death star blew up.  :)

Our movie in Chicago was the same - no Sing You Songs or Dondante.  They played Cobra during the credits.  The bear mauling at the end cracked everyone up!  Jim must have thought that one up!  I know what you mean about having a hard time sitting still, not clapping, not singing, not dancing - basically this movie just makes you want to be at the show!  I guess the best way to control that would have been to come to the show completely stoned/a few Jager shots and then just sit there in that happy MMJ zone....slightly physically incapacitated but with a shit-eatin grin!   :D :D

I'll have to check with my wife to see if she saw I Will Sing You Songs and DonDante last night, b/c Tom and I definently saw it. But, Tom and I were also the only ones eating the brown popcorn....

It is a bit odd that you guys did not get to see those 2 songs.

Tom and I were doing some restrained head banging at the Belcourt. It was really hard to sit there and not sing at the top of my lungs. I did a rough count and there was nearly 100 people there, which is about twice as many as I has expected. Probably the LOUDEST moive I have ever seen. It was superb!

Post by: BH on Oct 31, 2006, 12:11 PM
Actually they cut out It Beats 4 U, O is the One, Dondante, I will Sing and Lay Low.  At my viewing anyway.

Speaking of LOUDNESS, that was my only complaint, well besides the above missing songs.  I would have cranked it up a few notches myself but it was probably loud enough for those people in this world that havn't abused their ears like I have.

Great show,  congrats to the lady that won the guitar, I hope her
legs grow together. I'm just jealous.   I thought the camera footage was good.  The band scattered into the crowd shots was a cool concept.  It was nice to meet Suebeeboo and to see
Jacketgirl  again and talk a little Jackanese. Party on !!!! See everbody at the RIV.

Yeah we had a great time in Kedall Square!  There was clapping and hooting/hollering.  I too was a little bummed about the setlist truncation :(.  Highlight--I talked to the dude who won the guitar and we exchanged info cuz I told him I want to buy it off him.  Too cool (hope he doesn't change his mind) :D

Somebody offered our winner $200 right out of the gate.  He turned it down.  I think that was a good move.

TOTALLY!!   He's like a double expresso with a couple hits of Vivarin!  Also, that one little shot of Tommy when he smiles is AMAZING!!!!  I loved it!   You really don't get to see his fantastic smile enough!   And some of you were in the theater with him??

The film was nothing less than amazing. It felt like I was at a show; that essence was captured perfectly. You know those moments when the music's so loud you can't think and the lights are shining and your heart keeps swelling with all these feelings of beautiful benevolence? And suddenly, you forget about your job or the fact that you're broke or whatever... it's like your problems dissapate and until all that remains is you and the music--the music that transcends yet captures the gamut of everything that's good in this world.

Yeah, it was just like that. But only on film. And I didn't get a Dondante or I Will Sing You Songs, either. But it still kicked an infinite amount of ass.

(!!!!)

Wasn't it cool at the begining when the beats from wordless chorus started slowly.  The anticipation was fantastic.  And then, that slow zoom shot with a kind of out of focus shot of the band from a distance.  The whole mood set on this thing is brilliant.  I can't wait to soak in in some more.  I have always been a huge fan of close ups of guitar fingering and they didn't dissapoint although I would have liked a few more! :)  How about Patrick's sweat soaked shirt!  Damn I want to hug this man.  Some of the shots of Bo were pretty damn cool.  Oh hell, this whole thing gets better the more I think about it.

I went to the screening in Denver, and it was the shit.  The drawing wasn't done after the show, though.  You just filled out a slip and they said they would call you if you won.  Was anybody else at the Denver show?

I'm guessing that someone working for the theater "won".

Sorry for those of you who had low attendance. In the 'ville we were practically sold out. I would say a very low estimate would be 250. Anyone else? What is your estimate for the 'ville attendance?
The movie was freakin' fantabulous!  My friends and I decided afterwards that everyone was probably waiting for 4 or 5 people to have the balls to get up and dance and then we all would have gotten up, but no one wanted to be the first. :)  Too bad whoever had the beach ball got shut down.
And for the person who asked, yeah Tommy was there, cute as ever with the new haircut! He does have a GREAT smile!  too bad he's taken LOL

I was also at the Louisville screening. The theatre looked pretty full from where I was sitting (2nd to last row in the back). The movie was unbelievable, however, it seemed that the sound was not right for the first several songs. Regardless, it was cool to see MMJ live on the big screen. My favorite part had to have been Steam Engine. The other part I liked was during the instrumental section of Off the Record when the dude in the crowd with the Alpaca was tripping out.   :o

The guy who won the guitar was in my row, I'm not gonna lie, I wanted to sneak up on him in a dark corner of the parking lot and take it.  >:(

The Boston screening (in Cambridge) was sold out as well, but the theatre was only half full.  I too wanted to follow the guy who won the guitar into a dark alley.

But I didn't.

Anyone saying I did is just lying.

Also, the rather large kid standing behind A. Man in the audience, was that a badmotorfinger shirt he was wearing?  I certainly looked like the one I had in high school.

Hey, hey! It was so nice to meet you too Sue (and your daughters). And Taterbug, always a pleasure! So nice to see familiar faces. I was hoping a forum member would win the geetar but the woman who did looked genuinely thrilled.

That film was amazing. Bermuda H, I felt the same way about those first chords of Wordless....I actually got butterflies in my stomach. And when it started and the branches were pulled back it felt exhilarating.

I can't say enough about the video quality and the sound - it was perfection. I had the HUGE fortune to have actually seen these shows last November and this film does it justice. It was really cool to see the people in the audience too, I recalled the girl dressed as the faerie! Also to be able to see the stage in detail was great. We were a bit further back and did not know that there was so much put into the design  forest stage. It just looked incredibly cool.

Those clips of Patrick are other-worldly! He is the SHIT!!

Steam Engine Yes, Steam Engine is breath-talking.

was at the LA show.  theater probably 60% full.  would have been great had it been full with people bobbing their heads, but incredible anyway.

highlight was meeting bo after the show.  he was standing in the lobby area with what looked like his family, and sort of just watching people file out.  only a few people saw him.  he signed my poster, and was very self-effacing when he said how embarassing it was to watch himself on screen.

also got the inside scoop on an LA show: they'll be at the wiltern in january.
