Bring it on folks.  I know you are feeling good right now and ready to get your party on but someone needs to fill us in ASAP.

Guys

First time seeing the band.  I'm drunk and tired, but...

THEY FUCKIN' ROCK!

Can't remember the setlist but here's an image of JJ from the front during OBH

They just blew us away tonight.  The Astoria was awash with love and sweat.

Forgot to say what was the highlight of the night...

I saw DragonBoy on the way to the toilet.  Better than meeting the band  :P

Allright!!!!!!!

I'm pretty drunk at the moment. I should be asleep now but wanted to check in first on the Astoria show.

I hope you all had a great evening! I'm sure you all got kicked your asses  by Jim and his mates, while I was dancing on Snaps Rythm is a f*n' dancer.. :P

I'm looking forward reading all of your reviews tomorrow!

Bring them on boys, bring them on....

This was the end of the show.  Can't remember the song right now - I am destroyed by guitars and beer..

Setlist to follow from someone who took notes and didn't mosh like a nutter (ie not me)

PS - I'm SuperDrunk (TM).  Just swigged some single malt in an effort to bring me down.

Not working.

Back in the land of the living (just), sipping tea at home nursing a sore head and neck.

As I said last night, this was my first time seeing the guys, having arrived too late to see them supporting Doves in 2003.

The Astoria filled up steadily during the support; for those of you who haven't been there it is a small venue holding 1500-2000 at a guess.  It's all standing downstairs, 40 feet from  crush barrier to sound desk, with a couple of (well used) bars behind the desks.  Upstairs is a curving balcony with what looked like tables and chairs scattered around.

I'm hopeless at setlists, I'm afraid, but I can say that the opener was Wordless Chorus.  The sound was unbelievable   - all the clarity of the recording, but with Jim's voice even stronger than I could have hoped for.  They started early (8.30ish) due to a curfew, but played until 10.30 or so.

The guys put in an unforgettable performance, mixing songs from Z with offerings from all the other albums and a great accoustic interlude from Jim solo on guitar.

Highlights for me were, well, everything. Phone Went West, Run Thru, X-Mas Curtain, and an astonishing encore closer with Magheetah.  I almost expired from moshage during OBH one row from the front  8).

The crowd seemed fairly subdued during some parts of the performance, but in all honesty I think this was due to the band's sheer power and presence onstage.  They went nuts at the end, though, as my picture above attests!  None of our small group could believe what we were seeing/hearing - it was without a doubt a virtuoso example of live stagecraft backed up with a great back catalogue of strong songs.

For those who were there, it will live long in the memory.  I would walk barefoot over hot coals to see them again, anywhere, anytime.

Well.... what can I say.... amazing.  My first Jacket show and definitely not my last.  I turned up early and got to the front smack in front of Jim (I'm not the tallest and I hate not being able to see the band).  The show was awesome, they didn't let up at all, every song was as intense as the next.  It was one of those nights that reaffirms your faith in music.  Being at the front I couldn't see what the crowd reaction was like, but the place felt like it was buzzing all the way through and everyone was grinning from ear to ear at the end.  I wasn't sure what the crowd would be like seeing as the gig took ages to sell out and due to the fact that the band are not particularly well known over here.  I just hope they come back real soon... hopefully they will reschedule the Birmingham show and I can get another fix.

I have to apologise to the chap who asked me to save his spot at the front, if you're reading this I'm sorry, I tried to keep it but it got swallowed up by the crowd.  Hope it didn't ruin the gig for you.

Also worthy of mention is David Dondero who I really enjoyed as the support act.  He had some great songs and Jim quoted some of his anti-war lyrics at the end of the gig.

All in all a superb night, I've been to some amazing gigs but this was definitely up there with the best of them.

Anyone else got any pictures they can share?

I concur! Great talking to some fellow jackets in The Tottenham before the gig. And you, who i don't remember the forum name of, with the norwegian relatives, inside the Astoria. And dudess who i met at the entrance.

And what a fantastic show! I think my favourite of the night must've been I Think I'm Going To Hell. I was stunned and frozen during that one.

Hopefully get to go to London again for an MMJ Show in the near future.

Haha, that is indeed me with the pumped fists & my wife Miki to my right!
ManicMiner, if you're in the group hug then I have a feeling it might have been you or one of your friends that I asked to please stop talking during I Needed It Most.
It was great to meet CC, Mark (getting to the toilet & back was damn near impossible!) Stephen (Ben Grim) & Sarah.

What with the gig, my sisters wedding & having spent the last 24hrs or so in airplanes & airports everything is a blur right now. I will sit down & write a review when I can, until then I shall leave you with these 4 words:

Thought I'd register and say I was also there, great night!
I was right near the person in the black t-shirt in the photo (in fact I was next him for some of it I think, if that's the person that said "come to Japan"?) - the group that were shouting "mammal" were pissing me off during I needed it most, always seems to happen at gigs eh! thanks to the person that told em to shut up anyway!

I was wearing an orange t-shirt if anyone saw me hehe.

They seemed in great form, hope they tour again soonish! (that'll mean a new album probably).

Hey Nutsngum! It was me that shouted 'come to Japan' & it was me that asked the chatty group to keep it down. One of the guys apologised to me later saying that he 'forgot what it was all about for a minute' I think they were pretty drunk...
Sorry we didn't get to talk, I do vaguely remember an orange T-shirt  :)

Post by: dragonboy on Sep 27, 2006, 12:25 AM
Upon arriving in London on Friday the 22nd of September 2006 I gave my wife a short tour of London (in the rain, of course). From our hotel we walked down The Strand to Trafalgar Square & Nelson's Column to Piccadily Circus to Chinatown etc, ending at The Astoria on Charing Cross road. As if I wasn't excited enough, seeing the band's name in red above the entrance to the theater made me shiver all over (on one of the signs, an R was missing so that the band's name read MY MO NING JACKET)
I have to confess that like a star struck teenager I wondered around the back to the stage door hoping to catch a glimpse of the band. I even asked the security guard what time the band were due to souncheck. He was kind enough to tell me 4.00pm but was quick to point out that it wasn't Pearl Jam, only the support band?!! Thanks for that...
Still suffering from jet-lag, we deciding that it would be better to get some rest so bought a couple of Red Bulls & headed back to the hotel.
Jump to 6.50ish & we're in the queue outside. All around us people were talking about the band (I over heard one person say to another 'I think they're from Texas') & proudly wearing their Jacket T-shirts. Nothing exceptional there, I know, but all of this added to the excitement & helped me to realise that this really was happening (I have been a fan of The Jacket for more than 4 years now ever since I first heard At Dawn. I don't think I've ever had to wait this long to see a band that I love live (I used to live near London & go to gigs all the time) & was convinced that it wasn't going to happen for one reason or another)
I was lucky enough to notice Carl & Bo leave the venue & I chased after them (like a star struck teenager!) leaving my wife in line. I caught up with them in a sandwich shop & they were both extremely friendly & happy to talk. Thanks so much for that guys!
Jump to 7.50ish & we're inside, soaking up the atmosphere & enjoying the music (I only remember hearing an Aretha Franklin track & an old country song about Satan that got played twice) I met CC at the bar which was a pleasure (just as Billy Preston was often referred to as the 5th Beatle, CC will always be the 6th member of MMJ for me!)

8.20pm & the band take the stage. The opening chords of Wordless Chorus ran through me like a bolt of electricity. Jim picked up a toy wooly mammoth that had been sat on one of the amps before the band came on. He clutched it to his chest & sang his heart out, making me think of James Brown & Otis Redding when he fell to his knees.
I had hoped for It Beats 4 U to follow, they seem to fit so well together on the CD & I automatically think of the intro to It Beats when Wordless finishes. The line 'who can count the time I'm beating, with my hands' still destroys me every time. Anyway, it got played later & obviously hearing Gideon wasn't a disappointment.
The triple hit of Off The Record, What A Wonderful Man & One Big Holiday that followed was almost too much. Off The Record was amazing. This was the first song that really made me think, my god, this band is SO tight! The stop/start riffs that play before the 'psychedelic jam' at the end of the song were mind blowing.
What can I say about One Big Holiday that hasn't already been said? Like all true Jacket fans the high-hat intro to this song has been engraved in my brain & will remain there until the day I die. Kind of like the most elaborately beautiful, kick-arse (pain-free!) tattoo that we can all wear with pride. Hearing this song gives you the right to walk down the street smiling knowingly at all the passerby's that don't know. 'What you haven't heard One Big Holiday? Shame...'
I Will Sing You Songs & Golden were simply beautiful. The intro to Phone Went West had me leaping up in the air & screaming at the top of my voice. Some guy turned to me & said 'you like this one, do you?'
The triple hit of Laylow, Dondante & Run Thru was the night's big highlight for me. Don't get me wrong, I like these 3 songs but they weren't amongst my favourites until that night. I've always liked Laylow but not as much as Wordless, Wonderful, Off The Record & Anytime etc. This said, Laylow live is a completely different beast. The jam at the end was phenomenal. Patrick is quite simply the best drummer I have ever seen play live music. I have 2 names for you, Keith Moon & John Bonham. I honestly do believe that Patrick is up there with these 2 drummers. One Big Holiday is our Whole Lotta Love (not so much in the way it sounds, more the impact it has) Patrick is our John Bonham. Watching the band play Laylow really did make me think of The Hammer Of The Gods.
Dondante was always a great song for me but I remember the thread we had a while back Steam Engine Vs Dondante. Until last Friday it would have said Steam Engine, no doubt, now I'm not so sure. I guess you could say this about a lot of the Jacket's songs but I do honestly believe that you haven't heard Dondante until you've heard it live, same for Run Thru (so fucking powerful!). Dondante really moved me that night & totally blew me away!
I unfortunately had to make a pit stop to the toilet at this point in time. This was when I bumped into MarkW!
Just as they did during the into to Dondante, the people talking through I Needed It Most was the only disappointing thing about the whole concert. Made me so angry...
Xmas Curtain was excellent, Steam Engine was just heaven, a very welcome surprise! I loved the outro, I wish Bo's part at the end had been longer. The band have turned I Think I'm Going To Hell into something very big. Carl played slide guitar like a man possessed. It's so interesting to watch the 3 guys up front. I LOVE Jim's rock & roll showman-ship, his foot on the moniter, his leaps & (star) jumps. How he can do these not miss a beat amazes me. Tommy plays the bass with a look of stern concentration yet somehow remains casual & very, very cool. Carl though...Carl plays his guitar with a fiery intensity like something I've never seen before, literally like his life depends upon it there & then. Amazing....
Mahgeeta has become the perfect closer. I LOVE the huge stop/start outro that left me once again thinking this band is SO tight!!! Amazing band (the best in the world IMO) amazing show! The sound was perfect & the band was incredibly powerful without being too loud. All of my fav's got played & I discovered some new ones (I swear, I've pretty much played nothing but Dondante since). Simply amazing! The only problem now is there's no way I can wait another 4 years to see them again!

I met Ben Grimm after the show, who was (extremely) kind enough to give me his set list.
We went for a couple of drinks (tried the Tottenham but it was packed). I must confess that I went by the venue one last time to see if the guys were still there. I met the crew who informed me we'd just missed them. I thanked the guy in the Slayer T-shirt for his great work (he seemed to think he hadn't done anything of importance!) & we talked about the WM3.

Thanks guys for everything, hope to see you again soon. Apologises for screaming at you but I really did mean it...please come to Japan!!!

Thanks Doc!
Miki loved the big hair & is still feeling the effects today. She fell down a couple of stairs in the venue but led me to believe it wasn't that bad & didn't hurt.
When we got back to the hotel & took her boots off I nearly went into shock! I've sprained my ankle a few times playing basketball but I swear I have never seen anything like the swelling & bruising on her foot! Goodness knows how she managed to stand let alone jump up & down...that's the magic of the Jacket I guess!

My Morning Jacket, Astoria, London
By Nick Hasted
Published: 27 September 2006
My Morning Jacket are from Louisville, Kentucky, but to British ears they might as well be from another planet. They are long-haired, wide-eyed rock idealists, raised in a nation where the improvisatory boogie of doomed Seventies Southern bands such as the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd has never left the radio.

They are so addicted to touring that two founder members quit, shattered, a setback the band overcame by making their best album, last year's Z, which added reggae, funk and hip hop to their sonic stew, with the express intention of widening their audience. If the crowd tonight remains a rock one, its international make-up suggests My Morning Jacket are assuming the Grateful Dead's mantle, as underground heroes whose playing is worth pursuing across the planet.

They start with "Wordless Chorus", about a falling off of passion in daily life. The performance that follows is an answer to that malaise, with bandleader Jim James's startling voice at its core. James recorded My Morning Jacket's early records in grain silos, to gain other-worldly echoes, and reverb remains crucial to him.The Astoria isn't quite up to James's sonic perfectionist standards. If it was, his voice's piercing clarity could pin you to the wall.

"One Big Holiday" soon shows the whole band at their most focused and potent. A fast bluegrass guitar solo leads with deceptive softness into verses given pounding emphasis by Patrick Hallahan's drums, while Carl Broemel takes another guitar solo with the sexual rasp of Duane Allman's on "Layla", and James shrieks over it all.

Equally impressive is the sight of them. Heads down and sweaty long hair flailing, James, Broemel and bassist "Two-Tone" Tommy move to internal beats, while Hallahan attacks his equipment with the comic ferocity of The Muppet Show's Animal. The levels of un-ironic passion could make some cynical British viewers laugh. I do, but with pleasure at their thrilling vitality. Inevitably, there are longueurs, as the band's penchant for soloing leads them down dead ends.

But there are also moments when their improvisation hits a groove which takes you out of yourself, to a trance-like, spiritual place. By their closing brace, pint glasses are being raised to the simple, rare pleasure of rock, played with soul.

Oh no! Sorry to hear that. Give her my very best. Hope she's better really soon.

Heeeeey guys!!
Thought I'd quickly post some pictures of the gig and some of the people I met. The gig was freakishly AMAZING. It was definitely one of the best I've ever seen. All of the songs I absolutely wanted to hear were there, especially -yes- The Bear. Quite emotional moment, the song means a lot to me :-). I don't have time to write more, I'm leaving for America in just a few hours. When I have some time in a few days, I'll write some more. It was great to meet you guys: CC, Stuart, Zoran and 2 friends with weird croatian names ;-), Sore, and some more people I forgot the names of. Thanks for a great night and hopefully it occurs to me that we see each other again, someday. Cheers!

Ok, I have no clue how to post these pictures urghh. I'll post em later. Anyone who can givce me a real quick picture posting manual? Thx!!

I have to say I rocked screamed jumped and whistled all night long ... but when Dondante came on ... I literally just stood there in silent awe.

Just that, silent awe. Wow.

I got a video of them doing Dondante at Austin City Limits which blew me away but ... live ... ouch, I think my jaw just hit the floor.

My Morning Jacket

 Astoria, London

Tom Hughes
Friday September 29, 2006
The Guardian

It is two years since Kentucky rockers My Morning Jacket last played in London. Their last scheduled gig was called off when singer Jim James went down with pneumonia just as their fourth album, Z, was released. That album saw them embellishing their trademark country-rock squall with dashes of Flaming Lips-esque keyboard detailing and pushing their poppy side to the fore.
A clutch of those pretty, synth-led songs open tonight's show. Suddenly, things that sounded on record like a band deliberately avoiding what they do best start to make sense. Even the faintly ditzy cod-reggae single Off the Record somehow rings true.

James' extraordinary, arena-filling voice is a little more playful and whimsical with melody than before, but still pitch-perfect. All the while he's bouncing around the stage like a little kid, his 360-degree mop of hair barely giving even a glimpse of his features.
Rapture greets the arrival of old favourite One Big Holiday, and the all-out rock band is back, complete with sweetly cacophonous build-ups and glorious Allman Brothers-style guitar duelling. It's a sound My Morning Jacket have mastered beautifully, and it's good to hear that it's not entirely left behind in the new material. The monumental Lay Low hits new psychedelic heights and, best of all, Anytime combines their bright new pop twist and that pounding rock classicism pretty much seamlessly.

There's the occasional lull - some of the electronics just don't quite gel, and now and then the long instrumental workouts fail to take off. But that's not often, and the two-hour set flies by with the old thrills taken further than ever, and a few new ones marking a skilful broadening of style. Just how it should be, and well worth the wait.

That's top secret :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

It's a book I made for a friend of mine. It contains every songtext of these dudes. but there are missing a lot of. mainly the early demos and b-sides. Jim James was very fascinated  :).

Perhaps someday, every fan will hold this book in one's hands like he does/did.

Currently I'm working on the second draft. Maybe you guys can help me out with the missing words:

Breathin'
Call Tyrone
Cobra
Death is the Easy Way
Downtown
Good Nights And Happy Trails!!!!!
I Just Wanted to Be Your Friend
I Just Wanted To Say
It's Been A Great 3 Or 4 Years
I Won't Cry!
Josha Dreams and Bitter Hands
Nothing 2 Me
R.I.P.V.G.
Somebody Cares About The Maestro
Sweetheart
That Someone Else Was You
The Year In Review
Time Never Gets
Tonite I Want To Celebrate With You
Weeks Go By Like Days
What Will I Do?
Why Don't U Love Me?
Xmas Time Is Here Again

I really would appreciate it if you can help me out!! :)
