I am proud to announce that on Saturday, February 17th, at the historic Alabama Theater (www.alabamatheatre.com), Reg's Coffee House will celebrate 10 years on the air by presenting a special concert for the listeners and everyone who has made it possible for the show to exist all these years. This concert has been a dream for a while (more like a fantasy as I never imagined the show would make it this long) and I couldn't be happier with the lineup that has assembled for this special evening as Patty Griffin (www.pattygriffin.com), Jim James (of My Morning Jacket) (www.mymorningjacket.com), Matthew Perryman Jones (www.mpjmusic.com), and Stoll Vaughn (www.stollvaughan.com) will all bring their amazing talents to the stage that night in what I would call and All Star Reg's Coffee House lineup. Tickets
are $22.50 and go on sale this Saturday morning (1/13), 10 AM, at www.ticketmaster.com or 205-715-6000/800-277-1700. Proceeds from the show will go to my favorite local charity, the Greater Birmingham Humane Society (www.gbhs.org).
I would like to take this opportunity to personally invite everyone who gets this email to come down to Birmingham for a weekend and be a part of this celebration. It would be an honor to have you in our town and have you be a part of the show. The show could have never made it this far without each and every one of you and I want you to know that I would love to have you here. It would make it that much more special. Plus, how about the lineup? Could it be any more killer? You know you want to be there. Why? Let's take a look.
Patty Griffin is set to release her latest CD "Children Running Through" (ATO) in February and just wait until you hear it. It's as good a record as she has ever released and her soulfulness shines through like never before. I am so glad that the show's listeners will have a chance to hear these songs live before she kicks off her national tour in March. Patty hasn't performed in Birmingham in a while and we are more than ready for her to take the stage and blow us all the way with that voice that is part angel, part devil and all magic. I've been playing Patty on the show since it first aired and I still can't believe that she is playing the anniversary. Can't wait!
What can I say about Jim James that I haven't said already? If you haven't seen him perform solo/acoustic then you are missing out on one of the most compelling and gorgeous live acts you will ever hear. My Morning Jacket's songs take on a whole new life when Jim presents them this way and if you are lucky, he will perform a cover like Bread's "Make It With You" that will melt you. Jim symbolizes what I love most about doing Reg's Coffee House and it is great to have someone that I call my friend performing for the Reg's Coffee House listeners.
Matthew Perryman Jones put out an independent release that just might have been my top release of 2006, "Throwing Punches In The Dark" (independent release). This record is one of the most honest records I have ever heard and has been a major part of my life the last few months. The songs are undeniable and the presentation is engaging and endearing. One second I feel like I'm listening to Robbie Robertson or Peter Gabriel, the next, Bono and Jeff Buckley are flowing from my speakers. If you love music, you must check out Matthew Perryman Jones.
Stoll Vaughan brings the delivery style of Townes Van Zandt, the grit of Johnny Cash, the energy of Bruce Springsteen and the poeticism of Bob Dylan to the stage. His attitude and approach remind me more of "Guitar Town"/"Exit 0" Steve Earle than anyone else. I was a big fan of his debut record but I am freaking nuts about his latest "Love Like A Mule" (Shadowdog Records). I can't think of a better way to kickoff the evening.
To say I am excited about this lineup would be the understatement of the year. I am so psyched, not for me (well, maybe a little bit for me) but mostly for the show's listeners. I couldn't think of a better way to thank them for all the support over the years and for making the show that much more special to me. This will truly be a listener appreciation party. Make your plans to be there. It's gonna be an amazing evening. And if that isn't enough, we will donate all of the proceeds to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society who are as important a group in our community as exists.
Peace,
Reg"
Outstanding Lineup! Wow...all of those artists are SO talented. You may recall, Carl & Bo played on Stoll's latest CD, and Carl on his debut. I've seen all of these acts live and the CDs are just as great. If you're going to see Jim..try to catch them all.
Snagged two on the first row center this AM (the first good thing ever to come out of owning a Black & White card).
Good stuff, although I'll be fantasizing about a full band set at the Theater the whole time.
LB, thanks for recommending Stoll---sounds like he's the first to perform and I might not have made the effort to be punctual otherwise.
I hope they aren't all sold out by Monday (payday). :-/
I mean, I'm obviously going to see Jim, but I love me some Patti Griffin, too.
i'm gonna make this happen
Quotei'm gonna make this happen
we bgky peeps should band together
what a treat this should be.......see ya'll in Birmingham

The Reg's Coffee House Ten-Year Celebration
– a listener appreciation show at the Alabama Theatre
It's been ten years on the air in Birmingham and Reg's Coffee House is
celebrating with a one-of-a-kind listener appreciation show at the
historic Alabama Theater. Four amazing acts will take the stage on
February 17th showcasing their diverse, dynamic talents all within the
musical context of the Reg's Coffee House weekly show. Between acts,
Reg will interview artists, offering a personal glimpse into what
motivates and inspires the musicians performing. This is a show truly
for the listeners, providing the unique feeling that you're are sitting
in the studio with Reg watching great music unfold.
Patty Griffin is bringing her passionate storytelling and gorgeous
vocals to the stage. Her performance in Birmingham will provide a
unique opportunity for fans to catch Patty prior to her national tour
in March promoting her new album. Dynamic performer, Jim James, front
man for My Morning Jacket, will offer a rare opportunity to see his
solo acoustic show. Matthew Perryman Jones and Stoll Vaughan will round
out the lineup. Jones, an unsigned singer-songwriter out of Nashville
gained critical acclaim this year with his album "Throwing Punches in
the Dark", while the soulful sound of Stoll Vaughan, who recently
toured with John Fogerty and John Mellencamp, will offer the perfect
complement to all of the evening's performers.

Got tix in row A of the right mezzanine; should be a great vantage point. I can't wait for this show, Jim and Patty are probably my two favorite musicians, and the prospect of seeing them together at the lovely Alabama Theatre is almost overwhelming. Also, though I am not really familiar with their music, Jones and Vaughan sound like they will be a treat also.

MPJ's Neilson Hubbard-produced debut Throwing Punches in the Dark may have already been released locally and earned accolades from Paste, Performing Songwriter and influential Birmingham radio program Reg's Coffeehouse, but it's looking likely that it may soon see a national re-release, possibly via a major label.
