::: INITIAL ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENT ON FEB 14
The initial artist announcement for this summer's Bonnaroo Music Festival will be on Wednesday, February 14th. This announcement will include an initial lineup of artists, as well as ticket on-sale information for the festival being held June 14-17, 2007.
What artists do you think will actually think will show up?
i hope for, besides MMJ, TV on the Radio. I heard they throw one of the best shows. Wouldn't mind seeing arcae fire again, they kinda rule, and it would be nice to see WSP play in the south.
If the rumors are true and i miss this i would cry. Bob Dylan! The Police! MMJ! Thats three of my favorite bands. Band of Horses, Arcade Fire, Decemberists, TV on the Radio, and Cold War Kids would be awseome also.
MMJ = Bonnarro
The Hold Steady are confirmed! so is Michael Franti and CWK.
all signs point to the Police.
Wilco and Andrew Bird are also likely.
oh and Charlie Louvin, will be at the Roo

Yeah I know what you mean! Here's what was posted on another MB, where the people there were going gaga that the White Stripes were going to play Bonnaroo...
(http://img484.imageshack.us/img484/7165/picture2su3bc8.th.png) (http://img484.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture2su3bc8.png)
At first I thought this might've been bs though because personally I can't believe that MMJ (or JJ) aren't slated to play it yet, especially since the festival is in
Tennesee!! :o But now I'm not so sure...:-?
Tool?!? As a Tennessean who went to the first couple Bonnaroos and as someone who has seen Tool. I dont get that pairing.
That lineup is correct...

Tool is going to be monumental at Bonnaroo.
Im so psyched for Langerado. MMJ was however added after the initial lineup announcement there.
Bonnaroo is the most diverse festival in America.
I'm pumped for Tool, but the White Stripes is the cherry on top for me.
It's been in the back of my mind that one year the Jacket won't be at Roo. I really hope MMJ makes it this year. When i think of Bonnaroo, the first thing that comes to my head is MMJ, they turned me on to Bonnaroo, and if it wasn't for them, i wouldn't have discovered this beautiful festival.
The Richard Thompson Band!!!! FANTastic! Some of you may be saying.."who?"..but you won't after you see him, and I hope to goodness if you're there, that you do. Whoa. Smokin' Hot! Just Google the legendary, genius songwriter and guitarist. And prepare to have your mind blown :-).
Okay..back to your regularly scheduled forum.
It's official, it's sick, it's sacred. May the Jacket be added later.

The founder of English Folk Rock, no less! ::)
That should read 'English Electric Folk Rock' :-[
um.....................seriously. is mmj out of bonnaroo this year?
we'll have to bring a big stereo and play a special set of mmj songs for the mourners.
still holding out hope, though.
Am I the only one who thinks the White Stripes suck live? I've seen a number of televised performances, and I would never pay to see them. Them and Modest Mouse are just sloppy as hell live. I love both of them, but damn... pull it together.
didn't mmj get added late last year? they have to play. i believe they're the only band to play every bonnaroo so far, and last years set was the best show i've ever seen.
in other news...ween...wilco...flaming lips? all we need is neil young and built to spill to have the ultimate concert of all time.
QuoteAm I the only one who thinks the White Stripes suck live? I've seen a number of televised performances, and I would never pay to see them. Them and Modest Mouse are just sloppy as hell live. I love both of them, but damn... pull it together.
I saw them at the Fox Theatre and it was fantastic. I also have the DVD Under Black Pool Lights and I love it. I did however think the sound on the MTV special that they did from Brazil (? I think) was not great, so maybe you are thinking of that? I think their raw powerful sound is better in person than on video.
On a seperate note, I think we are SOL on the jacket. Why would they be added later? I mean at this point, don't you think they would have a pretty good idea if they wanted to play there again? I just think Jim, has fully conquered that festival after '06 and wants to move on to other things. They really would have a hard time topping that last performance. Maybe Jim could just swing in for a hour long daytime solo set.
Well there are always at least 2 or 3 artists announcements for the roo, and although I know what you mean by their coming, seeing, and conquering multiple times, i'll still hold out hope. jim solo would be amazing also. i just think that being the greatest live act in music plus the opportunity for collaboration means that bonnaroo NEEDs MMJ.
They must have forgotten to write MMJ on the list. It's just a typo right? Right? Right? :'(
Let this be clear, my fellow fans:
If MMJ does not play this year, I will host a MMJ party at my campsite. I make sure to get there early to get central camping. Last year we were pushing jello shots onto everyone under the giant "2"

nah, mmj was announced on time, so to speak, last year. All I can think of is maybe it interferes with a recording schedule. I don't anything about that, but I'm just trying to think of some reasons.
As for the second part of your quote, you forgot to add the jacket in there!
yes...you are right. I am ashamed of myself! my MMJ party at bonnaroo will be my community service to right this terrible wrong.
Am i the only one who thought last years line up was 15X better?
dammit...we have to get to the bottom of this!
MMJ please play Bonnaroo 2007...you can top last year's set easily! play 4.5 hours instead of 3.5 and start with the TN Fire and play all the way thru Z and then surprise us with 2-3 new tracks from the new record!!!
if that happened...my head would explode!
i actually like this year's line up a lot better. its more appropriate i think...more jam...aside from MMJ, it's just missing robert randolph. radiohead looks like they're there to do a job and not have fun, which is the opposite of MMJ. Though we don't have Tom Petty to bring in the ladies again like last year.
It'd be hard to top oysterhead though.
i could do without fountains of wayne and franz ferdinand
I think the line-up looks great, but MMJ will be missed if they aren't added...
Very diverse line-up. Should be great. I'd go for Golgo Bordello and Wilco alone. Plus maybe i'm stupid but i love the police and have always wanted to see them live.
the police are cool. the only thing wrong with the police is sting. anyone in favor of kidnapping sting and convincing jim james to take his place for the roo set?
Well you have to understand. Look at last years lineup, you see between 80-100 bands on that list. Right now all you see is about 40 or 50. They still announce big names and theres still a chance they will be there. They have no reason not to be. Its got to be their biggest and best show, longest set at least.
Come on Jacket, Im comin down from Buffalo,NY, 75% because of what you guys did last year for 3 and a half hours.

I should get off my ass and go to bonnaroo so I can catch them. I think I'm just a stickler for drumming. They have nice beats, but Meg always seems off beat to me. I'll have to see them to make an educated decision.

yeah, meg is a shitty drummer, but she gets a pass since she's a chick.
john bonham rarely played on the beat either. not to say meg white is anything close to bonham. the stripes are cool. i don't mind them, but i'm not excited to see them either. if they play against anyone else important, they'd lose out.
i'd go just for MMJ if they were playing.
Maybe they're just done with it. I am too. EVOLUTION!
I just thought of this idea thats so awseome i would die from it
Saturday night at the roo, just as The White Stripes wrap up and people head over to see Tool, they gather around the dark stage. They wait for 30 minutes and nothing happens. Tons of hipsters and hippies, put off by Tool, wander around to the other stages or an MMJ party. Just then, out of no where, the riff from One Big Holiday sounds through the whole farm and the stage stays dark. Everyone runs to the stage in a giant stampede, and just then, the lights fly on and standing in the forefront, shredding away, hair flying, is Jim James, flanked by the rest of the band. Apparently Tool's flight is late, and they had to call up Jim and the boys in an emergency. They then proceed to play the most amazing 3 and half hour set in recorded history.
QuoteMaybe they're just done with it. I am too. EVOLUTION!
They aren't done with it. Trust me. Even if they don't play this year.
I bet even if they don't play, they will still be there.
If you haven't checked out STS9 (Sound Tribe Sector 9)you should. Their drummer is outstanding. Its trance jam band at its best. Get your groove on and enjoy.
QuoteI bet even if they don't play, they will still be there.
They'll be in a field on the other side of the farm! ;)
oh man. i may just have to hit it this year.
although...the memory of that mud from 2004 still haunts my dreams... :P
wilco! black keys! gillian welch! manu chao! old crow! the police! the decemberists!
everyone get there "please don't let all the acts i want to see be playing at the same time" voodoo working. ;)
i have faith they'll be added. the lineup is so good already they had to save someone for the end. my bets are that mmj, the stooges, or neil young get tapped for rounds 2 or 3. plus, maybe i've missed it, but aside from bob weir there doesn't seem to be a single member of phish OR the dead slated to play yet. that just seems off. they've got some tricks up their sleeve still.
last year they were pretty good about scheduling acts so there was minimal overlapping.
mmj is a bonnaroo institution. they have to be incorporated somehow. imagine that the superjam is none other than my morning jacket? that would be amazing.
I've got to agree, Les Claypool isn't on there either, and we all know he's always there, so he's gotta be added, and he was last year. I think they're just putting us all in suspense! I mean that has to be the answer.. My Morning Jacket, as a whole, has always said in any interview that playing Bonnaroo is their favorite festival/venue to play! So they've got to... more or less..
yeah my buddy and i were noticing that there's no claypool anywhere on there. also, this lineup so far is very light on hip hop and jazz-based music. i'd expect to see MMW or scofield at least, if not bad plus and benevento/russo or some other variant of that style.
i admit, i could go without rx bandits and franz ferdinand, and i'm praying they don't add arcade fire. we don't need to add any pretentious hipster bands to cry on stage for us.
all in all though, even if they didn't add anyone else, it's still a great show. it just needs the mmj cherry on top. though i think that spinal tap would be a better headliner than tool.
QuoteI just thought of this idea thats so awseome i would die from it

This was awesome by the way. Every sould on the farm would be absolutely rocked. I just know that if you give them enough wattage, the highest volume and brightest lights, people will come. Oh yes, people will come.

I guess my issue is that meg is an ok drummer at best. Jack is an amazing musician, I just don't get her. I don't really feel there is much chemistry between them. I just see tons of energy coming off off him and a bland 4/4 beat coming off the drums.

uh oh aMD...you're in trouble now!
Arcade Fire? Cry? You must be out of your mind? have you ever seen them live? they are by far one the most incredible bands you will ever see preform...beside MMJ. I put them up there with all the great shows i have had the pleasure to see in my life
Tool - Coachella
Radiohead - 2 nights at the Greek Theater in Berkeley
Widespread Panic - Vegoose closing night 2
White Stripes - 2 nights at the Greek Theater in Berkeley
My Morning Jacket - New Years S.F (#1 NO DOUBT)
but Arcade Fire - Vegoose simply stole the show
while everyone was running to Dave Mathews panzy ass, Arcade Fire threw down harder than any band at that fest. They are an amazing band and it would be an honor if they got added for they push the limits of music and push the limits of how far your soul can really reach towards music.
But to the real topic...MMJ will get added. they have to right? they will be the only reason i will make the drive from Calif. I need to seem them in their HOME.

right, so to make it even plainer: it's ok to be a crappy musician if you're a girl.

meg white is a bad drummer (according to you), but that's ok, you don't care, because she's a woman.

meg white is a bad drummer (according to you), but that's ok, you don't care, because she's a woman.
well, not completely. I don't much care for the white stripes because she sucks and because jack's voice gets on my nerves. i'm saying the general public gives her a pass because she's a woman. that said, if she looked like sasha cohen I might be more tempted to go see them.
Believe me, I'm not the only one who feels this way and it goes both ways. do you think John Mayer would be as popular as he is if he looked like Meatloaf?
For me, there's not anything sexier in the world than watching a chick bare her soul and rock out on stage. Is there something wrong with that?
no, there's nothing wrong with that.
i just had to google john mayer because i didn't know who he was.
and it looks like kathleen edwards is opening for him here in canada.
which just makes this whole series more circular... what a funny day.
anyhow, wow, that dude had 14,000 plays on myspace. holy.
did kathleen edwards sign to columbia?? let me check. it doesn't appear so.
yeah, i'm not crazy about that dude's music, but i also don't really find him attractive. i like watching women rock out on stage, too, aMD. i also like watching fellas rock out. moreso.
i actually like the white stripes, and i dig meg. but i have different ideas about drumming.
it just felt like you might've been suggesting that women had different perameters of musical ability than men, so i needed to clarify. 'tis all.
Now that the Bonnaroo festival is set up as an annual "event" and the spontaneity is gone, we, the people, need to understand something: although Bonnaroo is an amazing place for fans and bands alike, it is now a corporate money-maker. It's a venue for up-and-comers, has-beens, and bands who are attempting to discover a new audience and sell more albums. For My Morning Jacket it served as a vehicle. I wouldn't have gone to Bonaroo last year if My Morning Jacket wasn't going to be there, but when the announcement came that they were playing at midnight in a tent I knew it was going to be a show. Who can deny the '06 3hr+ late-night tent performance as nothing short of DEFINATIVE? My life would be incomplete if I wouldn't have been there. If you missed it, you really missed it. But why would a band like MMJ even want to follow up this year? We've seen them grow with each year at Bonnaroo and it's given us music to love. Take a break, spread it around to other festivals and venues, work on the next album, the next move. Bonnaroo has seen the show, and it was GREAT! I doubt they'll even be there this year. But let's be happy about what's to come instead. Am I wrong?
agreed, justonefan. I also think that this must have had something to do with the band's decision. Didn't MTV buy the roo last year? It's devolving and it may be time to move on.
QuoteNow that the Bonnaroo festival is set up as an annual "event" and the spontaneity is gone, we, the people, need to understand something: although Bonnaroo is an amazing place for fans and bands alike, it is now a corporate money-maker. It's a venue for up-and-comers, has-beens, and bands who are attempting to discover a new audience and sell more albums.
Bonnaroo has always been an annual event. They have always made money. It has always been a venue for up-and-comers, has-beens, and bands who are attempting to discover a new audience and sell more albums (and bands that just kick ass no matter what). Why diss Roo now? Because MMJ isn't on the bill? I, the people, do not understand.
MTV never bought the festival, nothing but a rumor.
Try to go see Gogol Bordello. You may not care for their music all that much, but they will give a performance that you will not soon forget. A little fodder for the campsite discussions so to speak.......

agreed - somebody told me about them because of my devotchka love, and i was not disappointed. they're really rad.
and i agree with the sentiments above, bonnaroo is awesome. period. if i lived closer i would go every year. i would even camp there when the festival wasn't happening. (and i would run around relishing the space. ;))
Agreed check out Golgo Bordello. Like i said before one of two main reasons i'm going to go is them.
"But why would a band like MMJ even want to follow up this year? We've seen them grow with each year at Bonnaroo and it's given us music to love. Take a break, spread it around to other festivals and venues, work on the next album, the next move. Bonnaroo has seen the show, and it was GREAT! I doubt they'll even be there this year. There's clearly a large contingent of people who don't care that last year was a crowning acheivment. And the year before. And the year before that. (Sorry if that comes across as snarky, I don't mean it to.) All I mean to say is that everyone knows that no matter what the time of day, no matter what the stage, and no matter how long the set, My Morning Jacket is one of THE defining bands of Bonnaroo, and will bring one hell of a show no matter the circumstances. Has everyone seen the petiton on the inforoo message board? It makes me feel even better about loving this band. There are many more converts than I could have imagined.
That said, the rest of your points make sense to me, especially about looking forward to what's coming in the future. If they don't make it, definitely not the end of the world, but if they do, they'll rip. In the meantime, about the only thing that's left to conquer is a Main Stage slot. I could see that happening this year and them sitting out a couple of years after that.
I for one would not want to see MMJ on the main stage. It would be great exposure, but its harder to get anywhere near the front at the main stage, unless you stay there all day and miss a lot of other bands.
But it would be great for them i suppose.
NOT ONE BAND FROM LAST YEAR IS ON THE 2007 SETLIST YET!!! SO THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THAT WHEN THEY ANNOUNCE MORE, MMJ WILL BE THERE
I could have sworn Kings Of Leon was there last year????
QuoteI could have sworn Kings Of Leon was there last year????
nope...they didn't perform, but they took a helicopter there to watch.
There are no words to describe how awesome that is. It would have been even better if they all took seperate helicopters and they all looked like this....
did they repel out or did they land that thing somewhere?
ha ha...that is freakin' sweet!
and i assume they landed...repelling (sp?) would mess up their hair.

ha, so true.

Bonnaroo is awesome! As I told my wife this morning, I could make it fun if Alvin and The Chipmunks were the only band performing. Don't worry so much about the bands, just go for the experience. (Although I too am sad about MMJ, but my gut feeling tells me they WILL be added). Well, about the chipmunk thing, I may need a little enhancement.......
QuoteI could have sworn Kings Of Leon was there last year????
Saw them '05 'ROO but not sure if they performed last year.
not only are they not on boonaroo's lineup they aren't on Coachella's. BOO! give a little love to the west coast all you southern's.
I know the roo is their fest...but i'm going to coachella and i want to see them THERE too.
I do get to see Gorgol and Kings of Leon by the way! yay for me.
The lineup for Coachella this year is AMAZING. Sonic Youth, Explosions In The Sky, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Arcade Fire, The Rapture, Interpol, Bjork, I mean it just goes on and on. I'm so jelous.
In Rolling Stone Magazine, MMJ said the Roo was a holiday for them and its already marked on their calendar every year, why should this year be any different. This is their biggest show. IF anyone saw them there last year, please join me in saying that those were argueably the most amazing 3 1/2 hours of live music at one time.

I was not there, but I saw on the AT&T Blueroom streaming video and yes, with apologies to NYE, that was the most amazing 3.5 hours of live music of all time. The lantern, the cover song choices, the guest appearences, the atmosphere, the time of night, the.......
i'll say New Years was cooler...thats only cause I was at New Years and not The Roo...
I heard from a pretty reliable sourse that Bonnaroo is going to have 4 headliners this year. Something to do with WSP only being able to play on Thursday or something. Looks like MMJ could close the mother down.
Nothing like a good rumor huh?
I would concur that the Roo show of last year outdid any live performance I have ever seen. Completely mindblowing. I mean most bands cover songs that are pretty standard, but who in their right mind covers "A Quick One..." and follows that with a tasty "Loving Cup." Unreal. I've got my fingers crossed that they'll be there this year. Wouldn't be the same if they weren't!!

I don't know. man. Roo '06 was pretty fucking unbelievable.
I was at the Roo last year and they were unbelievable, I've seen them a bunch dating back to 2001 or 2002, and by far that Bonnaroo show was a crowning achievement. I would love to see them go again this year. Maybe even a super jam with Ween and MMJ, hell yeah!!!

"...As far as I'm concerned, bands that play loud power chords and catchy hooks are the optimal kind of music to see at a festival. Hip-hop acts and solo artists tend to be consumed by the huge stage, and the sonically rich sounds of arty bands never seem to fare well outside. In Franz Ferdinand, The White Stripes, Spoon, The National and The Hold Steady, Bonnaroo has culled together five of the best, purest, guitar-heavy rawk bands making music today. When My Morning Jacket eventually signs on for the festival, Bonnaroo will feature at least six of the most festival-ready bands around. Boo-yah Coachella."

QuoteAm I the only one who thinks the White Stripes suck live? I've seen a number of televised performances, and I would never pay to see them. Them and Modest Mouse are just sloppy as hell live. I love both of them, but damn... pull it together.
along with a few others...The Kings of Leon were just plain PITIFUL live when me and my brother saw them...actually left half way through....

Ha.
When I think about going to festivals, I think about hanging out with people who couldn't care less about credit card miles...
