Now that it is all over I was just currious what everyone's favorite moment was during their last tour. MMJ brings happiness to all people here, and i love hearing all the stories from shows in FL, Boston, SF and Athens.
So: Favorite Moment/Story. It's time for OUR REFLECTION!
My Favorite Moment - Watching my friend at NYE while everyone around him was dancing and he just stood there. When the song was over he looked at me and said "im just to stunned to rock out"
When I first saw the NYE setlist. I was floored.
-there was a moment during the ending of DonDante (in Knoxville) where Jim was playing a creepy long bit and Brian turned around and smiled right as I was reaching to tap him on the shoulder (then we had sex)
-Jim talking about the steps in the Ryman having Louisville, Kentucky stamped on them
-Jim acknowledging our "Save the Sun Sphere" sign at the Ryman.
At Bonnaroo '06 I lost my friends, so I made new ones in the form of this lovely Guy&Gal (Thanks Joy and Brandon!). Anyways I forget what song was playing but they were jamming the fuck out, and I was dancing around not even really looking at the stage when Joy grabs me, turns me around and says to me "LOOK AT THEM!!!". So I did and they were just ROCKING OUT.... The world suddenly made sense to me, right then and there.

I still enjoyed your stories aMd (especially the first one, I got goose bumps), but try to stay on topic.

Sorry, Tracy. Post deleted. Maybe you should change this title too DFP
The Boston Pops shows in their entirety.
The Lionel Richie story Jim told at the Roseland show was a gem.
QuoteThe Lionel Richie story Jim told at the Roseland show was a gem.
Yeah that was great. Muahfuckin Lionel Ritchie... ;D
11/09/2006 Charleston, SC. I would say the show in it's entirety, but this one moment stands out.
There was this really cute girl beside me the whole night and during the intro to One Big Holiday I swear on my life I've never made eye-contact like that before. It was like we were melting into one with the boys scoring our every breath. I never saw her again.
I'll never get that moment out of my head. I get a ridiculous smile just thinking about it.
Man this is quite the tough decision! Went to the Athens shows and have dozens of good memories, but this one stands out...
After the second night was over, nobody wanted to leave, so me and a few friends went back inside (probably around 2am) and danced to 4 or 5 prom-style songs. We did it just like in the high school days too, formed a circle and took turns jumping in. A couple other folks I've never met jumped in, and I just thought that was the coolest.
The entire Bonnaroo show (6/16/06) was a highlight of all MMJ shows I've seen, but the Loving Cup>Easy Morning Rebel Jam was stunning.
Also, Nashville to Kentucky at the Ryman (11/13/06), OBH opener at Lousiville Gardens (11/22/06), and seeing Okonokos on the big screen with the sound cranked at the Belcourt (10/30/06).
Also, I will never again hear You Look Wonderful Tonight without thinking of Jim James putting on make-up...and when he began petting the toy lobster during Cobra at the first night of the prom....hilarious.
Man, I didn't realize just how hard it can be to narrow down your favorite live moment.
It's been a great one or two years.....
Knoxville-
-The one Tracy mentioned for sure
-Rollin Back was played and it was as beautiful as you would imagine.
-The Light Show (this was the first time I got to see the new lights and I'm still floored)
-Jim jumping around during They Ran and doing the Whoo's at the end
-Seeing the TN Theater packed and completely rocking out.
-The band and the bear had on suites.
-After the show we were outside the Theater and Tracy had this kind of far away look in his eyes, my wife asked him what he was thinking and he said...."I'm just trying to figure out if there is a way I could quit my job and follow this band around on the entire tour." :)
The Tabernacle-
-Wow, what a venue, that was my first time there and I was in complete awe. This was a crazy crowd. Both Wax Fang and The Jacket were in top form on this night and really appreciative of the crowd. It was all out rock bliss.
-AB and I danced to Steam Engine and it was really magical and something that I'll never forget.
-They played Easy Morning Rebel and jammed the end of it out like it was the end of the world.
-By My Car....I about shit in my pants.
-It was insane how many people at this show had on Pearl Jam shirts it made me feel good.
The Ryman-
-Tracy's outfit. That guy has a deep understanding of what Rock N' Roll is all about.
-The Ryman, my first time there and we were in like the third row. It was as amazing as I dreamed it would be.
-We held our "Save The Sunsphere" sign up to the tour bus window, unfortunately it was someone playing next door's tour bus and not MMJ's. Ha.
-It was really great to see so many people from the message board that night. Although it was a little sad that we all had to be in our assigned seats.
-This was also the show that I became a hardcore Wax Fang fan. When Scott came out in a coonskin hat, angel wings, and giant pink sunglasses I was completely sold. Also the first show that I realized he was singing, "long, long, live FOREVER" and not "long, long, live FLORIDA"
Athens-
-Just being on a three day vacation with my wife, the weather being absolutely perfect, eating at all these cool places, sitting outside on patios, having drinks, shopping at record stores, trying on prom dresses and ugly shirts, finding an Explosions In The Sky poster for $1. All the while knowing that the greatest band on the planet was going to play our prom later that night.
-My Wife and I going nuts during Mahgeeta. We were rocking out in tandem.
-Crimson and Clover and Oh What A Night being stuck in my head for five days solid after these shows.
-Smiles, High Fives, Kisses, Dancing, Sweating, Singing, Air Guitar, etc. etc.
-Follow The Train, very entertaining and very very good music.
-Feel Like Making Love performed by FTT complete with whip cream spraying.
-Being front row right up against the stage for night two. I could reach out and touch Carl at any moment. It was amazing to see him do his thing from that close. His eyes rolled into the back of his head right before he started on the steel guitar during Golden, I still get chills.
-Jim did the "Simpson's Sushi Jam" during the end of "I Will Sing You Songs" and I swear he was making direct eye contact with me while he was doing it. :)
-As the band walked off the stage after "Crimson and Clover" the last song on Night 2 Bo reached down and gave me a super high five. It was a great way to end the experience. Until Next Time!!
Favorite 2006 moment was BONNAROO!!!!!!!!!!!! I had been a fan since I wondered up on the 04 show in the pouring rain. I fell in love when I saw them at City Hall in 05. From there I saw them about 8 times until the Roo 06 show. They opened so many peoples eyes with that performance. I mean it was like they knew they were going to blow up after that show.
Bonnaroo 06 is literally the kind of thing Legends are made of. 20years from now I'll be telling people about how awesome it was when they broke into "A Quick One", or when Jim came out with that Lantern, or how they built the Faris Wheel for all of us. It was easily the most epic show I have ever seen and I've seen some shit.
I have also decided that another unreal moment was in Knoxville at the TN Theater. I was walking in as the band was taking the stage. I had 2 drinks in my hand and I was heading to the front. I had killer seats dead center 3rd row. As soon as I got to my seat, I looked up and Tommy was staring at me carrying my drinks. It was like he was thinking you lucky bastard. Then they began playing and the rest was history.
Another killer moment was the first note in the Ryman. As long as I can remember it has sort of been a rite of passage for a band to play the Ryman. I was so excited about this show. It certainly lived up to the billing.
Oh yeah, the inflatable sea creatures in Knoxville were fun to. Trey took home a sea creature friend from that show. It made me smile when I saw it in his car the next day. Along with the Viking Helmet that Trey keeps in the back seat, he told me he likes to wear it when he's driving around town, or pulling up to the drive through window at the bank.
The Ryman was amazing because it was the Ryman. It sucked that I was sitting all by myself, but I was glad to meet all the fine forum folk at that show. And, yes, Tracy's outfit was bitchin'. I got to hear "They Ran" live for the first time. Eargasms abounded.
The show in Champaign, Illinois rocked the balls. I was glad to be in such an intimate venue. I got to meet the band. Jim made jokes about the "Folger's" auditorium.
I think my favorite live moment is the same for both shows, though. I like meeting new people who have never seen the jacket live before. I love seeing them freak out and being all, "This is the sickest shit I have ever seen!" and just generally having their faces melted off.
Asheville. This was the first and only time I've seen them, and aside from it being a fucking incredible show, Jim commenting on how loud we were, and how it felt like they were playing Wembly Arena. And how he said the louder we were, the longer and harder they wanted to play. Also, dancing my ass off to Cobra.
For other bands there wouldn't even BE threads like this!
Like most everyone else said, the Bonnaroo performance was out of this world. There is nothing better in the world to do at 3am that rock out live w/ MMJ. For me, nothing can beat "Golden" at the Ryman. I just sat there, closed my eyes, and got goosebumps as Jim's voice filled that place like a choir of angels...plus the usher lady telling me to get back toward my seat when I was gettin my groove on in the aisle during "Run Thru!" Banging my head to Okonokos at the Belcourt was fun too. I think us middle Tennesseans have been pretty lucky!

I didn't know you were there! Where were you!?
QuoteI didn't know you were there! Where were you!?
I sure was! I was about 10 - 15 rows back, directly in front of Carl.
I also got into the 'pre-show sound check party' which was amazing. Just to experience the Jacket with only a handful of others in the room was certainly magical.

i was one of the peeps that jumped in. I could have danced all night! ... The 2nd night of SF i thought was just flat out to die for. They were possesed that night. I remember at one point covering my mouth and saying to myslef "oh my god" with the biggest smile on my face, realizing this was probably the greatest show i had ever seen. What a sick show. The other 2 nights werent too shabby either.
My first show at Lebowski Fest when JJ went down on his knees for like 10 minutes with his back to the audience and was seemingly in a trance during Cobra. Observed from the front row by a newbie it made quite an impression. ;)

I had my Dad take me. I was back by the soundbox. I saw the look on the technician's faces during the Run Thru false start...priceless.
"I think us middle Tennesseans have been pretty lucky! "
We most certainly are!
I saw them 6 times on their last tour. 5 of them at the fillmore.
NYE definately destroys them all.
It felt like witnessing a historical moment.
The whole encore I was 10 feet from the stage.
When they turned out the lights and played Wordless Chorus Jim came over to the middle where I was to sing. I took my jacket with EL (electroluminescent) wire that I had made and held it up facing him. He saw it and smiled.

Yeah, your EL Jacket was sweet. I complimented you when you walked in. Glad Jim thought so too
Best MMJ show I have been to was def at the TN theatre. I will never forget them opening with "The Bear". Thats probably the first.
SAFE THE SUNSPHERE. we need to make tshirts with that on them. or MMJ needs to have a song about the sunsphere in their next album.
Hey guys. I'm new here, but I have two for you.
Not there for: JJ telling the electric factory crowd about how coming to Philadelphia was like sitting in his favorite bean-bag chair at his grandma's house. (this recording is on archive.org and is very good)
There for: Langerado (Tie)-(1) during "they ran" Jim picked up a glow stick and pretended to smoke it when he sang "she had a cigarette...." (2) the glow-stick-sodomized blow-up doll that surfed the crowd.
Seeing my first MMJ show at the House of Blues in Anaheim. That was just an amazing, AMAZING experience for me. I'll never forget it! ;D There wasn't a dull moment through the whole ting. I can't wait to see them again!
The best moment was cleveland 12/04/06 seeing them for the first time. It Beats 4 You with the strobe light was such an amazing opener. Jim going all out on vocals on They Ran. Getting to see his movements on stage, he's such a character up there. Whether hes jumping around or dancing with a stuffed animal, i love that.
This is my first post on here and I had to tell everyone about it. I honestly believe this music has changed my life. I hope everyone enjoys...
My singular favorite moment in my indoctrination into My Morning Jacket was the beginning of the Louisville Gardens show. I feel like a lucky person because I have been able to see them in Nashville (ryman), louisville (the gardens), the foellinger in illinois, and then the prom in athens (with my viking helmet). But the Louisville show was amazing for the fact that my roommate and i decided to skip school on a whim to make the show because its the hometown. We got there and waited from 4 pm till the doors opened at 7 or so and got front row. Then after a great performance by Wax Fang, the curtain came up and the lights and then the unmistakable opening riff to One Big Holiday. At the absolute perfect timing, the curtain dropped and I still feel chill bumps from that night. That night I met God and his name was Jim James.

Here's the link to a short video of your glow-stick friend. I wish I had gotten Jim's reaction to it. The expression on his face was great.

Bonnaroo 2006 was pretty magical...and they only play it once a year (and not even this year). Bet they didn't play 3.5 hrs each night at the Filmore!
ill take 8 hours of MMJ over 3 days anytime.

Meeting JJ on the streets of Asheville while he was carrying a box of pastries was very memorable. But then, getting front row directly under him later that evening topped it off!
The entire Louisville Gardens show changed my life! What a great night!
"F***ing Megadeath man!"

YESSIR!!!!! ;D ;D
i meant to say, i'll take 8 hours over 3 day's of MMJ over 3 1/2 hours 1 day. but i think it got across this way, so never mind my this...god im an idiot.
Thus: NYE = best MMJ event of their career and Roo = Best exposure.
Another thing i loved about this string of shows is ALL THE COLORS. LOTS AND LOTS OF COLORS. there's footage of wordless Chor on you tube from Langderado...and when the lights hit, it looks like a giant unicorn is farting out a rainbow. it's fucking beautiful. that must have been some surprise to all the Tre and Spread fans who just happened to stumble upon them.
Kinda like a..."WOW, is this a magic trick?" kinda thing.
PS. this thread rocks - thanks for all your post. finally one of my threads got somewhere...the last one i tried to start "what drugs do people take at MMJ shows" got deleted. this is a big step for me.
;D
for the record: i favor the double cappuccino. ;)
ok: golden moment from prom night 2: during the second set, conferring with the couple to my left who'd been rocking pretty fierce up at the stage, and saying, "what do you think, run thru?" and having the band launch into a massive run thru right there.
also: i came across three sets of notes taken during shows (set lists scrawled on ticket envelopes, mostly). i have them hanging up next to my desk. brings me right back. :D
Saw the Jacket in Austin while just getting into them. Needless to say, BLOWN AWAY. So after getting into them way the hell more, me and my special lady friend (ehh? did you get that Lebowski reference??) decided to road trip up to Colorado for the final 2 shows of this last tour. So in Dee-inver, as Jim would say:
-During the final show, Jim broke his little E string during OBH. But being the genius that he is, he just kept right on playing flawlessly, walked up to the front of the stage during the final outro right where we were standing, playing the best improvised guitar part I've ever heard. He didn't even look at his guitar, he just gave the Jim stare to the crowd and played the baddest ass part ever. Even without the crucial little E-String, it sounded perhaps even better that the original, because it was plain to see that he just improvised it on the spot, during the climax of the song. Fucking mind blowing!!! The crowd collectively shit their pants!!
-Again during the final show, but during the encore, they brought out the other members of Elvis Perkins to play horns on Dancefloors!! Awesome already right? Well guess what happened next. Two tone broke his FAT E string on his bass, you know the biggest one, for all of you non-guitarists, which breaking one is all but unheard of. And of course, Tommy just kept right on playing, moving up to higher octaves when necessary to compensate. And when Jim saw, during the final jam out of the song, he "helped" Tommy by backing him up with guitar underneath what would normally be the licks that are only bass. And after a few bars, the horns come blasting in and the band engages in a full on, jam out with all 6 standing musicians dancing and jumping. (Pat and Bo were seated and weren't able to dance so much but they still rocked out) Truly transcendent. After the show we walked down the street and met up with Dave, their sound guy, and the guy responsible for making the best live band in the world sound the way they do!! He was awesome and even bought us beers and we talked for hours about life on the road, etc. After, we said our goodbyes, took some pictures and made our way back to our hotel in the falling snow. It was truly one of the best nights of my life. I've heard people say before that seeing MMJ right now is akin to seeing a band like Zeppelin at their peak, and I couldn't agree more. Life changing.
Broken strings don't mean shit when you got the spirit running through your fingers.

Amen to that.
I have already left my favorite live moment on this thread but this is somewhat in connecetion with it. My first MMJ concert was the Ryman show, and I will never forget getting to nashville early in the afternoon to take in the historic areas of the city and low and behold, I see Jim James walking down the street down from the Ryman. I wanted to go up to him and say hi but decided not to because I believe that its only a limited time that he can still do that and I wanted to respect that. But still, its an MMJ moment and just a perfect coincidence in a perfect town.

what about folgers, brotha? ;) glad to see you finally joined the board.
one. ryman in nashville. for one, because its the ryman for godsakes, and because it was on nov. thirteenth which just so happened to be my twenty first birthday. nothing could ever top the way the music made me feel that night. plus i think the woodford reserve had something to do with that too.
two. athens ga, prom night one. i was in the front row, in front of jim. serveral times i just felt like i was in a trance. i actually got knocked in the head by the "flying v" a few times after jim and i rocked out in tandem. plus i got to be a mermaid. ive always wanted to be a mermaid. plus i had a brief convo. with tommy about corvettes and bowling green in general, and then he signed my cd cover. i also took some sick photos and they posted them on the website (here), under the gallery.
three. louisville gardens in nov. front row again, in front of carl and two tone. the opener to OBH made me think my heart was literally going to explode. i felt faint once the curtain actually dropped. ive never rocked out harder in my life. my neck was sore for days. then went to the makers mark lounge afterward and had a blast.
of course i had fun at urbana and nashville city hall, exit inn and whatnot, but these are my top three.
people in illinois do NOT know how to rock out, meg and jeremy can testify to this.
