Title: M. Ward with Jim James-Ryman Auditorium
Post by: ellisintransit on Apr 27, 2007, 01:09 PM
I am sick to my stomach over this one.  I wanted to go to this show to see M. Ward, but he was opening for Norah Jones, therefore the ticket price was out of hand.

After a nice Patrick Hallahan drum appearance with Andrew Bird last week (with Carl and Jim backstage), Nashville is graced with the presence of another MMJ sighting.  I love this town.  I'm officially going to the Bright Eyes show at the Ryman now.  JUST IN CASE.....hehe.  Anyone else go to this show?  I'd love more info on setlist, etc.  I wonder if any of the strictly Norah Jones fans knew the treat they were receiving?

The Emperor Has No Hair

My Morning Jacket's Jim James—who accompanied M. Ward for most of his set last night at the Ryman (opening for Norah Jones)—has gone all Britney Spears on us. Man, that dude can sing: some of his harmonies gave us goosebumps. For a full report on the show, check out next week's Spin.

Jones' taste, too, is impeccable, as evidenced by her choice of indie-folk favorite M. Ward as her touring partner, the gentle hush of his voice nearly as heartbreaking and darkly compelling as hers. For the song "One Life Away," Ward was joined by Jones and by singer Jim James of My Morning Jacket for some haunting three-part harmonies, their voices lacing together amid the reverent quiet of the room.

It said Norah covered Tom Waits "Long Way Home". That was probably cool.

Plus a picture of M. Ward, Jim James, and Norah Jones all singing together.

"We walked into the Ryman at 7:31 p.m. last Thursday and M. Ward was already well into "Magic Trick," one of the standout tracks off last year's Post-War. They run a tight ship! We had been anticipating a full-band Ward experience (akin to the magical one we had at the Belcourt last September), but instead the scruffy-haired young singer-songwriter was sequestered in the front-left corner of the stage—and doing his best not to bump into any of headliner Norah Jones' backing band's elaborate setup. Though he was bandless, Ward was not alone. An unassuming, blond bearded man with a freshly buzzed head was playing acoustic guitar and adding soaring, precise harmonies to Ward's roughhewn growl. "That's Jim James," we said. "But where's the hair?" remarked our companion, clearly not buying it. But despite his newly shorn appearance, we were becoming more and more confident that Ward's mystery compatriot was the My Morning Jacket frontman (who we knew did work on Post-War). After a protracted debate our companion decided that the only way to settle the debate was for him to close his eyes. And with that voice, those notes, that superhuman control, all doubt faded away. Of course, a minute after we'd settled our debate, Ward introduced his "friend from Louisville." Validation! Toward the end of Ward's set—which included a particularly stirring rendition of "Chinese Translation"—Ms. Jones, clad in polka dots and jeans, joined the duo onstage. The triumvirate of talent was truly something to behold. Ward closed with one of his signature acoustic instrumentals. His masterful plucking reverberated richly through the Ryman, rousing the low-key crowd to an enthusiastic ovation."

"banging head on desk for not going!!!"

^Ditto on that^.....I remember looking through Pollstar when it was announced and thinking "M. Ward at the Ryman!  Yes!"  Only to be disappointed because it was him opening for Norah Jones.  I don't like her music (no offense to anyone who does of course), and I couldn't bring myself to pay a boatload of money to just watch the opening act.  It would have been worth every penny with ole Jimmy James in the house.  But hey, whatever.  There's not really any way we could have known.  Just as I could have never known that Patrick was going to perform with Andrew Bird at the Mercy Lounge, five feet in front of me.  I'll take what I can get I guess.

It still stings though.  hehe.

OMFG

Well maybe he will Bright Eyes and maybe he won't.

For sure, though, Jim likes it in Tennessee.
