My Morning Jacket Announce Release Date, Shows

It's been too long since we've heard from My Morning Jacket. Since becoming modern rock mainstays off the success of 2005's Z, they've been picky with appearances and scant with releases. And picky/scant-ness works great if you're trying to build a myth, but it doesn't help us with our hunger for kickin' tunes! Thus, the news of a proper studio follow-up to Z is more than welcome.

The new album is currently untitled, but the band is finishing up its recording and mixing for a June 10 release on ATO. The record's production comes from frontman Jim James and producer Joe Chiccarelli, who has worked with the White Stripes, the Shins, and Brian Wilson. (Hey, maybe this is MMJ's bearded symphony to God?!)

Both the band together and James alone have a few tour dates on the docket as well. The first three are in Texas in March, first with Yo La Tengo and then as part of SXSW. Their final scheduled show is at NYC's Radio City Music Hall for "An Evening With My Morning Jacket".

MMJams:

03-10 Houston, TX - Verizon Wireless Theatre *
03-13 Austin, TX - Austin Music Hall (SXSW)
03-15 Austin, TX - St. David's Church (Jim James solo) (SXSW)
06-20 New York, NY - Radio City Music Hall ("An Evening With My Morning Jacket")

* with Yo La Tengo

Wow, not only do they finally make up for their '05 cancellation, but they bring Yo La Tengo with 'em. Fucking great news.

how big is this venue?

Quotehow big is this venue?

if it's all GA, holds nearly 3k.

IMO it's too big of a venue for these groups. it's one step down from the big ampitheater in the woodlands. there are several smaller but midsize venues here that would be better but what do i know. back in fall i saw queens of the stone age and arctic monkeys at verizon on a monday night and the place was barely halfway full. then i saw interpol a couple nights later and it was packed so i guess the timing had a lot to do with it. with this show happening on a monday as well i predict it doesn't sell out or come close. hopefully i'm wrong. the jacket hasn't been here since fall '04 so i know they've gained a lot of fans since then. yo la will bring some people out on their own too. should be interesting. with wilco (sold out for them last time in '05) playing there the friday before, it will be an amazing few days.

I have to disagree nightafternight, the verizon is my favorite place to see  a band as big as MMJ in Houston.  I've seen the Mars Volta, the Strokes, and the Toadies and they were all great shows, among many others.  I fully expect this show to sell out and can't be more excited.

Does anyone know when the tickets are going on sale, though?

Yeh, I am considering trying to go again...big venue or not, it's still live MMJ!  And they'll be playing new material, sure to be awesome.

I called the Verizon Wireless Theater box office today, and they told me the tickets would go on sale February 1st at 5 pm.  Don't shoot me if this changes ;).

thanks for the tip, j. as for your earlier reply to one of my comments, i don't think verizon is crappy venue or anything (tho it mostly lacks any sort of personality or style). i've seen many great shows there as well (last one was ryan adams & cardinals, fookin incredible), but it's still hit and miss. other times i've been it was half full, and just isn't near the same. all i'm saying is my preference would have been warehouse live or meridian(!), both being places that have a better 'show feel' to them than verizon. perhaps i can't come to grips that MMJ's popularity has grown that much since their last show here. that was at the freakin Engine Room in '04 with maybe a couple hundred folks there, tops. if it doesn't come close to selling out, the show will suffer IMO. but with Yo La on the bill and it being on spring break for many college students in TX, people will come.

bottom line is i'm ecstatic they're coming back here and making good on their promise to return. i'll have a great time no matter where it's at. sorry if i come off like a little whiny bitch. that's not my angle at all.

If I can get tix Friday for the Houston show which after RCMH Im a bit worried about, Im going to stay at the Lancaster as it looks like a quick walk to the theater. Anybody know if this is the best way to go?
Anybody got an update on when tix will go on sale? The Live nation website is so not sweetpickles when it comes to tix info.

Just purchased my ticket through ticketmaster using the phone. wanted a reserved ticket. I was told all they had was GA. Asked him to look again considering tickets were not on website. After 3 times finally got what I wanted section 204 Row A. Just joined to let people know in case it helps anyone. Yes I have been lurking forever.

yeah ticketbastard raped me. $45.80 for a $30 ticket! i'll go to the end of the earth and use my last borrowed dime to see these boys, but it really burns me to hafta deal with those fees. i had to use the automated system over the phone and when they asked me for the event they accepted the words "my morning jacket" as "bon jovi" and "utah jazz" before putting me on hold for 10 minutes. its bad enough to have to fork it over in fees, but don't add insult to injury by accusing me of being a bon jovi fan!

Thanks!   I *think* I got tickets!   I did get a confirmation number, so I guess that's good!?   I got two tickets in Section 205, can't remember the row, and seats 16 & 17.   I am wondering how big this place is, maybe 2-3K?   I probably won't be taping unless it's a taper-friendly venue, but maybe some of the more hard-core people with balls can get their equipment in!?   Thanks for the information, man!

I have been to a few shows at Verizon and as long as the band allows taping the venue allows it. There were three tapers at Wilco. I was sitting next to one of them and he was hiding his stuff. The other taper I met after the show said he showed them his equipment at the door. He told them it was to tape the show and they said ok. Would love a copy if you do. Pretty excited it will be the first time seeing them.

just wanted to add that tix are $33 if you buy directly from the box office. they were open til 5 this past saturday, so that was a pretty convenient time for me to drop by. saved over $30 total on 5 tickets by not going the ticketmaster route.

I'm thinking about going to this show, what's the best bet for a no hassle ticket purchase? Is that Ticket Master # still the one to use?

Right now they're reviewing the Yanni 'Live at the Acropolis' DVD in preparation for their triumphant return. Or maybe it's John Tesh at the Forbidden City.

I can't believe I didn't take the day off for the short 9-hour drive to Houston today. :(

the artist formerly known as jim james was in full force tonite in is 'butt-less' purple sequined pants. unbelievable.

wilco friday
centro-matic/SSG saturday
mmj monday

the jacket would have blown any of them off of the stage. i love wilco and think that they are an amazing live band but i think i've got to give it to mmj, at least in this round.

the new songs sounded great. definitely some falsetto action.

cheers,

b

I noticed Jim's rocking the double mics these days.  Was there a noticeable difference between when he sang through and did not?

yeah i think there was a difference. he seemed to be singing out of the one to his left most of the time. maybe a little more cowbell out of the right hand one, i mean reverb. could just be that i had lost my mind by about the 2:00 minute mark of the 1st song.
