"Over the last couple years, some very cool stuff has been happening at the old Berkeley Church in Toronto, long converted from its original purpose as a house of worship to an event hall. My only experience was the totally insane show the Yeah Yeah Yeahs played there during the Film Festival last year and between being pummeled by the rest of the crowd and having Karen O scream in my face, I can confirm it's a lovely room.
A room that, for the last few Springs, has also played host to the tapings of the Beautiful Noise television series. It's a live performance show along the lines of Austin City Limits and has featured the likes of Feist, Voxtrot, Neko Case and Sloan, amongst many others... and if you've never seen or even heard of the show, it's because it's been broadcast exclusively on the RAVEHD high-def television network in the States (if you live in the States and subscribe to RAVEHD and have seen the show, disregard that last sentence).
That is, until recently. There were some open invites for studio audiences during the tapings of season two last Spring and this past Fall, SUN-TV began broadcasting the show locally on regular cable at 7PM on Saturdays - this I discovered whilst channel surfing one evening and just happened upon the Kathleen Edwards show.
That's all well and good, you're saying, but surely I'm not just going to sit here and play commercial for a television show, right? Right. Season three begins taping next week, and if you thought the lineups for past seasons were impressive, check this out.
March 31 - My Morning Jacket
April 1 - Jim White / Sarah Slean
April 2 - Kaki King / Jon Langford / Dr Dog
April 3 - The Constantines / Ted Leo & The Pharmacists
April 4 - The Black Angels / The Donnas
April 5 - Islands / Stars
April 6 - People In Planes
April 7 - British Sea Power / Yo La Tengo
And to answer your first question, no, the artists are not playing any other shows while they're in town for this. And to answer your second question, yes you can attend... but not easily. There's not going to be a general public open invite this time but the producers have given me a number of guest list spots for each performance to give away to you, gentle reader, but I've been instructed to not make it easy. Hence the conditions of this contest, which some might call fiendishly clever in its intricacies. If said people had an incredibly low standard for fiendish cleverness.
It will work as follows: Leave me a comment below with your correct email in the "email" field - spam-proofed is fine - and list off, in order, the tapings you would like to attend. For each of the multiple-artists shows, you must answer the following: if this were an ultimate fighting-type celebrity grudge match rather than a concert taping, which of the performers that night would triumph and why. Be descriptive. If you want in for the My Morning Jacket taping (which I imagine many of you will), tell me what contemporary artist would be able to best the boys from Kentucky in a mixed martial arts competition. If you want to see People In Planes, well I don't really know boo about them so just say so. Everyone deserves a bye.
I have two pairs of passes to give away for each show, so winners will be selected randomly from all qualifying entrants (the conditions above are for my and everyone else's amusement) and each awarded their first available choice until all spots are spoken for. You can only win once. Does that make sense? Note that save for the MMJ taping, which has doors at 8:15PM and show at 9, all shows have doors at 6:30PM and the first performer at 7, second at 9 (or 7, 8 and 9 for the three-fer). So if you're going to throw your hat in the ring, make sure you can get there - Queen E and Berkeley (Parliament) - on time. Lollygaggers will not be admitted. The contest will be open until 5PM on Thursday, March 27.
Check out some footage from past seasons of Beautiful Noise at their YouTube channel.

Thanks for that.
I never realized Sun-TV (located a block away from the Berkeley church) actually broadcasts anything of quality. Kudos to them! No wonder I've never seen this show since it's on at a piss-poor time, up against the ratings behemouth Hockey Night in Canada. I'm excited as hell that MMJ are going to be in Toronto in one week's time.
fantastic..fingers crossed. a great little venue!
Sounds like Rave HD is a Dish Network channel. Does anyone have Dish Network?
Any out-of-towners coming to the taping?
frank yang's blog (see what laurie quoted) gets an A+ from me. i like it a lot.
anyone get the nod?
cheers,
Yv ::)
Hey guys...
I lurk around here all the time.
My wife and I are huge fnas and got passes to check out this show. I'm really excited. I've been a fan for a while now and haven't seen them live since I've become a big fan.
I'll post a setlist and review after it's done!
see you there!
haven't heard back yet...though I may have missed the deadline :(... oh well, thanks to the OP for sharing this. I stopped by here yesterday on a whim to see if there was anyone talking about the upcoming PJ tour, and saw this...I can be in Toronto in about an hour or so...thinking about making the trip anyway in hopes of getting in
still hoping to hear back from them
have fun everyone who is going!
I think I'll go out after the Toronto show instead of before. How does Betty's sound? It's a cool pub and very near the church. Megan?
CANT WAIT!!!!
WOO!
I'm really excited for this.
this is tonite huh?! is there gonna be anyway for us to watch or listen?
I assume you'll have to wait until the program airs.
And when will that be?
QuoteAnd when will that be?
No idea. Gotta go. MMJ's doors for the show tonight are at 8:00.

I really can not say enough how amazing and special this was. The venue is an old church that has been transformed into a performance venue. It's pretty small with nice high ceilings and a beautiful stone background behind the band. There is also a balcony where some VIPs were. Like I said, it's small and held 200 people at most. I was lucky to get in at the front of the line and was front row. It was so cool to watch the band that close in such an intimate setting.
The show was incredible. They really put on a great show for this taping. A lot of times bands can look nervous or stiff for a tv appearance, but not MMJ. They were as amazing as ever. It was really quiet and you could hear them counting off the songs and everything. It was really cool. The best was that right before the start Patrick says "Ready fuckers!?!" before launching into the gigantic drum intro of Evil Urges. Let me say it was the perfect opening song and imagine it will be the staple opener of the next tour.
The opening three songs were unbelieveable. They were so full of energy. At one point Jim almost launched right off the stage. I thought I was going to have to catch him.
The new songs sound amazing. Truly amazing. Often when a band plays new songs they can sound tenative, but it sounds like they have been playing these songs for years. They had all the energy and confidence that any of the old ones had. I have to say that Smokin' was the highlight for me. I really believe this will be the favourite on the album. It is really stunning. But, all of the new songs are fantastic. Highly Suspicious is ridiculous. I'm really not sure about it at all. The breakdown is great, the verses are bizzare. I thought seeing it live would win me over, but it didnt'. However, the others are amazing. Seems to be that this record is a completely natural progression from the last one. They fit really nicely beside songs from Z.
Some other highlights were Jim explaining how in the teachings of Zen you have to look on the world as if its the first time, but sometimes your forced to. He also talked about the hole in the ceiling being a "soul hole" and sucks the souls of people who come there. During One Big Holiday he jumped off the stage and soloed right with us. Then he did a big power slide on his knees on the floor. It was so great. He also sang Wordless with a towel on his head.
All in all, it was really an amazing night. This is getting super long, so I'll stop there. I'm sure more will come back to me.
Look for it when it airs, it's going to be an amazing show.
Excellent review!!! Thanks very much for posting Johnboy :)
I forgot to say how great the vocals were last night. They sounded a little shaky at points during the NPR webcast, but last night they were bang on. Totally brought their A Game. The harmonies were outstanding. Carl and Bo did a great, great job and Jim was at his finest.
Also, I was surprised to see how little the band interacts with eachother. Being that close you could really see the subtle things you miss in a bigger place. But the whole band just seems to be in their own world and just trusts the other members so much that they know what the other is going to do. It was very interesting to watch.
a fantastic show...i felt really lucky to see these guys in such a small venue with a great crowd. As always, Dondante and Gideon were steller, and the new tracks show improvement over SXSE! really into them and cannot wait for the album!
thoughts on releasing a recording of this show? not sure if there would be any issues.
Cheers,
Yv
Awesome review man! Thanks for sharing!
Quote...before the start Patrick says "Ready fuckers!?!" before launching into the gigantic drum intro of Evil Urges.
That just made my day :)
Thanks for the write-up of the show john boy...it's my favorite thing to read on this forum, a well reviewed show.
last night was one of the funnest nights in the history of nights in the world. :)
i had the pleasure of getting my FACE ROCKED OFF beside one sean murphy who was losing his mind beside me the whole time.
i also had the pleasure of meeting one jaimoe (finally), who unfortunately we lost each other after the show, and we will have to have drinks soon to talk about this amazing night of joy and pleasure.
patrick's new drums with the stars totally rule.
carl pulled out the pedal steel (a lot) AND the sax on what i think was a 45 minute version of don dante.
we yelled thrusting in your face about 60 times, to represent.
tom is now travelling with 48 bass guitars and three techs to keep hooking him up. i'm pretty sure the band had to stay in a hostel because they have no more money left, but IT'S WORTH IT THE BASS SOUNDS CRUSH YOUR CHEST.
when jim jumped off the stage, let's just say it was indicative of how much fun was being had.
now really. is there anything funner than watching bo grooving out behind those keys. somebody get that guy a keytar so that he can dance around.
i wish toronto audiences were not so shy. but that is ok.
i have no idea how long they played, but it seemed like a really long time, and i was so hot and sweaty from DANCING.
fave lines heard through the show:
"this next album is going to be retarded."
"babies will be made to this song."
i don't even know what to say about the new songs. they kick ass with a serious vengeance. some of them are so tender and lovely, and some just force your body to move you can't help it, and they're all pretty sexy. i mean seriously, holy crap.
this was a very special night and i feel so glad that i got to be a part of it, and i only hope there are 17 close ups of my face in a constant state of rock and surprise and admiration and especially i hope somebody caught me screaming THRUSTING IN YOUR FACE alsdfija;lfjsdlfjasdl;fjasl;dfjasl;djfl;asdjflaskdjf;alsdjf
I know it is early to ask, but are there any audio or video recordings of this show?
well, it was taped for a tv show thing, so yes. :)
check it: http://chromewaves.net/
i tried to find it...nothing....i cant imagine it has surfaced yet.
Ha Ha! I'm laughing out loud with joy right now. Seriously....
[smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]
Great show last night. Thanks EC for getting me in! It was great meeting you finally... and NYC Sean too. I went to Betty's after the show and I told Sean where I was going so I guess you went somewhere else? Next time! Vicki actually sprained her foot at Betty's. It was still worth it.
I Have this but am not sure if its ok to post as its for an upcoming show...any thoughts? Not a great recording due to my location, but a decent enough one till the show is broadcast.

I was there last night as well, right down front. I have no words to describe how amazing it was...
Hadn't seen them since Bonnaroo 06' and it had been much to long.
again, AMAZING...
All the songs were great new and old. From the new stuff, Smokin' From Shootin' was definitely a highlight. Old stuff, a what seemed to be greatly extended version of Off the Record was cool, and OBH was nice as always with Jim leaping off the stage into us, like some crazed axe wielding minister wishing for someone to lay hands on him.
a wonderful night.

first of all, the yelling elevates you to extreme baller status. secondly, the image of bo on a keytar makes all my dreams come true. in other news, i just totally jammed to "what is love" by haddaway in my room. p.s. this show sounds really tight.

First, you need to download a bittorrent client. uTorrent seems to be a good one.
Once you've installed the client, you can click the torrent link, and uTorrent should open it and start downloading. If it doesn't, you might have a firewall problem, which you need to solve by port forwarding if you access the internet through a router. This can get complicated, but you can find more information about it on the web.
Keep in mind that when you're downloading, you're uploading at the same time. That's how bittorrent works.
Did you ever figure out the flacs? If not, don't bother with the bittorrent because it's going to give you flac files.

great review! I to was front and cente for this special night. Its gonna be great to see the show (prob edited :( ) when it his tv.

That's not normal. It probably means you're firewalled. Do a google search for 'port forwarding utorrent' and read what your options are.
looks like there are a couple seeders now, so it should speed up!
