Title: Jim James + M. Ward: St. David's Church, 3/15
Post by: solace on Mar 16, 2008, 02:19 AM
M. Ward

Sad Sad Song
Oh Lonesome Me (Don Gibson)
Poison Cup
Rollercoaster
Duet for Guitars #3

M. Ward + Jim James

Chinese Translation
One Life Away
Outta My Head
? (i feel so wonderful, wonderful, wonderful the way I feel...)
Golden (w/ Carl on pedal steel)
? (Such a glowing example of peace and glory)

Jim James

Bermuda Highway
It Beats For You
What A Wonderful Man (on Omnichord)
Sec Walkin' (w/ Carl on pedal steel & backing vocals)
Librarian (w/ Carl on pedal steel & backing vocals, Bo on church pipe organ)
Smokin From Shootin (w/ Carl on pedal steel)
Thank You Too (w/ Carl on acoustic guitar & backing vocals)
I Will Be There When You Die (w/ Carl on guitar & backing vocals)
Gideon (w/ Carl on acoustic guitar)

they played just under 90 minutes total between the two of them

i've seen Jim & Matt play together before a couple of times, but this one took the cake. just an unbelievable show in an even more amazing venue. i feel pretty blessed to have been in attendance to be honest.  :o

now for the best part... i recorded the entire show on my Zoom H2 and it turned out surprisingly good for a) my first time using it to record live music b) sitting on the floor below my chair c) not planning to record the show until 5 minutes before Matt's set started (i remembered i'd had my recorder in my bag for interviews).  8-)

i'll be dicing up the show and uploading it sometime next week after I get back to Minneapolis.

i have to say that a lot of the new songs sound even more amazing in a solo setting (Smokin & Thank You especially).

i'm guessing someone will know the unknown songs, i just couldn't place either of them, even though the Wonderful one sounds super super familiar. I thought it was a Johnny Mathis cover at first, but I don't think it is. The second one sounds like it could maybe be on the new album, but wasn't one i'd heard yet or that the title is obvious.

Thanks for the setlist and taping the show! I can't wait to hear how it turned out.
The Wonderful song has been played a few times in the past year but I don't think it made it to the new record. Thanks again!

SXSW '08 Review: Jim Jones, M. Ward @ St. David's ChurchMarch 15, 2008 - St. David's Church, Austin, TX
Posted by Gil Kaufman (MTV News), Cincinnati, OH, at 3:30 am EST on Sunday, March 16th, 2008

The hype: The solo show by My Morning Jacket leader Jim James was so hotly anticipated that it seemed like most people just figured there was no way to get in. And there pretty much wasn't, since the tiny sanctuary at the 150-year-old Episcopal church in the heart of downtown only had room for 240 people.

The show: As cliché as it is to say that there was something spiritual about seeing the angelic-voiced James performing in a sanctuary with a ceiling that soared as high as his falsetto, there, I said it. It also represented both the quietest, most respectful audience I'd seen all week, as well as the only one where half the people were not texting or working their iPhones during the show. Before James took the stage, singer M. Ward played a short set that included a cover of "Oh Lonesome Me" (made famous by Neil Young) during which he looped his string-scratching slide guitar solo and played an acoustic blues solo so loud it threatened to blow the venue's speakers out.

Just a handful of songs into his set, James came out to join Ward and the two played a song they recorded together several years ago called "Chinese Translation," with Ward's sandpaper rasp perfectly complementing James' honeyed wails. After a mellow run through the MMJ classic "Golden," James told the crowd he and Ward wanted to "thank God for letting us use his house." A few songs later, Ward had to leave for a showcase and James took over, sending some of his soaring wordless choruses up to the rafters during "Bermuda Highway" and playing a space-age love song version of "What a Wonderful Man" on his vintageOmnicord keyboard. James worked out some of the songs from the band's upcoming album, Evil Urges, including the spooky-sexy "Librarian" and the intense "Smokin' From Shootin," which contained the apropos line "Faith can prove what science won't solve." The mesmerizing set ended with a fingerpicked "Gideon," during which James, his head tilted back and his near yodel of a voice aimed at the heavens, seemed as lost in reverie as the hushed audience.

The Verdict: This was as special as SXSW shows get, and you can be sure the people in that room will be talking about (and bragging about) it for weeks and months to come. Whether plugged in and blasting electric guitars through walls of amps or playing hushed acoustic, James' lyrics and vocals cast a spell that is as close as rock comes to giving praise.

Keep checking in with You R Here for more South by Southwest coverage throughout the festival, plus there's plenty more over on our sister blog, MTV News' Newsroom.

yep. it's an original that he premiere at the rud show last year.  They also played it at Bridge School but it hasn't appeared on the album tracklistings that I've seen.  Look at You is also an original, premiered at the rud but it IS on the album.

After the track listing came out and I didn't see Wonderful on there, I started wondering if maybe it was going to end up being part of the Oberst/Ward/James project.  This makes me wonder that even more.

whigs, ylt and mmj at the music hall

So now we have 10/14 songs revealed, leaving...

Touch Me I'm Going to Scream pt 1
Two Halves
Remnants
Good Intentions

Two of these were vaguely described by RS (Touch Me pt 1 and Remnants) and the other two we have no idea about.

My opinions: Librarian is spooky/sexy. In a good, uniquely JJ way. Look at You is beautiful, obvious gospel influences here.

And the sound is good enough for me. Thanks!

Solace. Please wait to upload the recording.

I don't know if you saw me, but i was in the back center of the room recording with a full  audio recording rig... mics, preamp, and recorder. I promise you that my recording is of higher quality and has a larger dynamic range. I'm not trying to be rude, I would just hate to see two recordings surface, one of which is much better sounding that the other. It seems from the 2 songs you posted, your recording is heavy on the low end, since it was sitting on the floor.

If you could just wait a few days, I will post my recording online for all to download as lossless audio.

Also, what is the My Morning Jacket recording policy, are they totally fine with people recording their shows and distributing them online? I am a fan of the music, just never taped them before.

thanks,

josh

that's great you were able to tape it without any credentials, i kinda figured they'd be ninja for that show. but i'm still glad I recorded it with my own recorder, even if it's not the best quality, since if it was the only recording it'd be better than nothing  ;)

I had to do some sweet talking at the door, but i got in, without cash, wristband, or badge, about 15 minutes before M Ward started. I tried to get a soundboard patch as well, but KUT was taking the only available send, so i am guessing they will be posting  something on their website. A soundboard recording won't do it any justice though because it won't have any of the room acoustics that my audience recording has.

Hope you guys don't mind waiting a few days, I will have it posted up by the end of this week.

The two unknown songs are Wonderful (the Way I Feel) and Look at You.

Dylan, the "peace and glory"/look at you thing clears up most of my question marks from the solo sets last year (The Greek/The Rud/Belly Up - Craft) however, there was also a song listed on the setlist as "Ordinary" if I remember right.   Any idea what this was?   Could it have been a cover?  New song not on the album?

That song is either another original or it's a cover of an aaron todovich song.  he played after dondante at the rud.  I didn't catch if he said it was about or by aaron.  my guess is that it's aaron's song.  anyone know for sure?

I'm almost postive "Ordinary" was an Aaron Todovich song.  I know he played an Aaron Todovich song and looking back at the setlist this is the only one it could have been.  Very heartfelt and beutiful song from what I can remember.  Hopefuly this show will surface soon.

I am a fan of the music, just never taped them before.

thanks,

josh
hey no worries!
heck less work for me and it'll be a superior recording!  :D

that's great you were able to tape it without any credentials, i kinda figured they'd be ninja for that show. but i'm still glad I recorded it with my own recorder, even if it's not the best quality, since if it was the only recording it'd be better than nothing  ;)

Hope you guys don't mind waiting a few days, I will have it posted up by the end of this week.

josh

Josh, not to be impatient, but how is the progress coming?  Thanks.

sorry guys, a few more days. You will get it though.

Just for a heads up, i am trying to see if i can get the soundboard patch from KUT, so i can mix the soundboard recording with my audience recording. If so, it will sound really good. Still sounds good, but it would sound better.

The dynamic range for the show was so large, that i am going to have to do some minor compression, just so the listener isn't having to turn the volume up way loud for the quiet song, then get nailed by some super loud clapping.

I promise i will upload it though.

cheers,

josh

Josh, can you direct me how to do that compression thing? I taped a Yo La Tengo show a couple months ago and it's super quite aside from the clapping which like you said, blows you away...

Have it all ready pretty much. Just need to track it out and convert to .flac.

Only problem is, I'm not sure if I will be able to torrent this. Is there any sort of MMJ fan ftp or would anyone with an FTP be willing to let me put this up on it, then seed it so everyone can get it? Josh.

uploading to archive.org right now, its kinda going slow. sorry fellas.

Even though the show was equally part M Ward, I am uploading it as a My Morning Jacket show, in hope of archive.org not deleting it off their site. Hopefully it will stay up there, we will see.

I will let you guys know when it is officially up.

I would say go ahead and go to bed. The upload is at about 605 right now, and I have no idea if archive.org has some sort of authentication period before it actually goes up. So yeah, i would just go to bed.

About the sbd feed from KUT. No, i didn't get it. If that guy emails me in the next few weeks, i will make a matrix mix, and re-upload it. But until then, you have this (when it finishes uploading).

yea man, slow down... you'd be kicked off many other site's boards for even asking for the show within 2 weeks of it taking place. Just cool your jets and go to bed, it'll get there eventually. Here is part 1, M Ward solo...

Hmm, i would really rather you not post mp3's online. I don't mind people converting to mp3 for their ipod or just personal listening, but i'd really rather not have straight mp3s transferred all over.

Also, i talked to the KUT guy, and he is going to probably give me the board feed in the next few weeks, so i will be able to put together a matrix mix (audience and soundboard recordings mixed together)

Thanks for all the work on these.  I'm a lossless/torrent noob, too (actually, worse than a noob -- I've never tried these formats nor will I ever, most likely), and am just wondering why the hesitation on posting mp3's?  Is it just a concern that you don't want to be responsible for compromised versions of the show being available?  I'm not trying to be an ass; I depend upon the folks who convert things to mp3 for listening to live music these days (god I miss my xl2s) and don't want to see the river dry up.

again, thanks for taking the time to do whatever it is people do to music to turn it into digital information!

You guys, it really is very simple.  All you have to do is download this teeny tiny FREE program (30 kb)...

http://members.home.nl/w.speek/flac.htm

Then drag the flac files into the window in the program and then, get this, pay close attention, are you ready?????

Press the button that says "Decode".  Done.

Files will be instantly transferred to glorious .wav files in all of their high fidelity glory!

You have to drag the actual flac files into the box.  I THINK that's your problem. good luck.

Yeah, be sure and drag just the individual files in, not the whole folder.  If you still have problem, let us know.  We will figure it out together!

Here is some cover art! :)

Is this what you guys see when you open the program?

And you are hitting "Decode" right, not "Encode"

Have you restarted your computer since you downloaded the program?

Well, yes, I meant the flac program window.  The files that you drag in should be listed as you show them.   Hmmmm.  I will have to think about this a bit.  Not sure what the problem could be.

Downloading the frontend is not enough, you need to get the codec, too, as it says on the frontend site:

The FLAC codec is not included. Download from the FLAC website.

Outta My Head is so sweet.   M's and Jim's voices together on that track are heavenly.

And the Librarian/Smokin' From Shootin' combo!    I teared up a bit on the way to work this morning.  Jim's still got the knack for making me cry! :)

Is there anyone out there that could post mp3s of parts 2 and 3 again.  The first link worked, but the second was expired.

Much obliged,
Travis
