Guest List: My Morning Jacket
Guest List by Jim James | Photo by Danny Clinch

Welcome to the final 2006 edition of Pitchfork's Guest List. Each week, we've asked one of our favorite artists to fill us in on what they've been up to lately: Which tracks they can't stop spinning, what books they can't put down, and what new bands they've caught on tour. This week it's Jim James of My Morning Jacket, who tells us about his love for Wham!, attending an organ recital in Switzerland, and his intention to beat your ass at Nintendo Ice Hockey.

>> Favorite Songs of the Past Year

Wham!: "Everything She Wants"
The Shangri-Las: "Out in the Streets"
Billy Paul: "Me and Mrs. Jones"
Connie Francis: "Breakin' in a Brand New Broken Heart"

>> Favorite Older Songs at the Moment

Aretha Franklin: "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman"
Franz Schubert: "Ave Maria" (from the Fantasia soundtrack)
Sam Cooke: "That's Heaven to Me"
Vera Lynn: "We'll Meet Again"
The Andrews Sisters: "Money is the Root of All Evil"

>> Favorite Band

The Band

>> Favorite Song Ever

Led Zeppelin: "Stairway to Heaven"

An organ recital at this huge, weird church in Bern, Switzerland. Nothing sounds better than crazy-ass organs up inside a big-ass old church while you're climbing the bell-tower!

>> Last Great Film I Saw

Snakes on a Plane

>> Last Great Book I Read

Kurt Vonnegut: Timequake

>> Favorite Piece of Musical Equipment

The piano.

>> Favorite Record Store

EarX-Tacy in Louisville, KY. I bought a Jones Soda there.

>> Best Thing I Bought This Year

A Swatch!!

>> Best Thing I Did This Year

I traveled around to various countries to which I have never been. I swam in the Mediterranean. I cooked spinach and onions with a loved one.

>> Best Music Venue

The Palace Theatre in Louisville.

>> Favorite TV Show

"Twin Peaks"

>> Favorite Video Game

"Ice Hockey" for the original NES. All fat's, no skinny's-- lets do this shit! I will crush all competition!! Bring it on the ice, bitch!!!

>> Favorite Radio Program

"Hearts of Space"

>> My Ringtone

"Breakdown" by the Motorola company. They write the muhfuckin' jams up inside this bitch.

Yea, Jim's dedication to Louisville makes me so proud. I can't think of another band that loves where they came from more.
I don't think the fame will ever hit them, and that's a damn good thing.

Not to create a rumor that isn't even remotely true, but that loved one that Jim spoke of cooking with... was actually me.

Thanks for the shout-out, Jim.

It's fun to pretend.

You can get a jones soda at many different stores here in the area of pittsburgh. Are they hard to come by in other areas? I reccomend the cream soda and the blue lemonade.

I've never actually seen a Jones soda outside of an independent music store.  If you see a Jones soda there is a good chance you can find an Emily Strange poster and some lunch boxes within 10 yards.  We got my father in law the Jones Soda Thanksgiving Set one year, it had turkey soda, mashedpotatoe soda, Greenbean soda, etc. etc.

We've got them at the Meijer down the street from me, right next to the deli (for some strage reason)

OMG last year my co-worker Jeremy bought the Thanksgiving Set of Jones Sodas, and I think he STILL has most of them in his cube!  :D :P

I think I have seen Jones Soda in a few convenience stores in western PA and maybe a coffee shop in OH, but yeah really not very often elsewhere.

Thanks for that, it was a cool read.

Hmm, one of my neighbors drives a Jones soda van. I don't know him/her but next time I see him I'm gonna ask him about his soda pop! :)

Here in Michigan, Meijer also has Jones. And Target has it too, I think. But they never sell cherry. I just want straight up cherry, not black cherry, not bubblegum berry, not happy thanksgiving gravy. Just cherry. Can I get a witness?
