Title: would you go to a JACKET festival.. PLEASE VOTE!!!
Post by: blainesanders on Apr 30, 2008, 12:13 PM
I am starting a production company and I'm STRONGLY considering doing an MMJ festival.  What I need to know is how many of you crazies would come out for it.
It would be in a VERY centrally located part of the country and this place is INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL.  The infrastructure for concerts with on-site camping is already there!!  The idea is to have Jacket at night and maybe DJ's or smaller bands late-night (We want this to be a Jacket thing, not a mix of tons of bands).  Then there is a ton of hiking, canoeing, fishing all right in the area.  We would have crazy activities such as kick ball or disc golf during the day, and some back ground music for the camping experience.  This festival would be somewhat small (ideally 10,000 max), and VERY chill.  I have been to many festivals all over the country and many beautiful music venues (Red Rocks, etc.) and I want the Jacket to put this place on the map from a national standpoint!  I also want to make this festival something unique and original, that would make the Jacket and all their fans proud.  Ideally we would try to do this around Memorial or Labor Day weekend of next year because the weather is incredible for this part of the country.  Anyways, would you guys be down for say $100 for the entire weekend, camping and shows included??  I'm checking these boards for interest before I consider approaching the venue and the band.
Anyways, Please Vote if you'd be there!!! As a guy who's been to over 1000 concerts, I think this thing would rank in my top 5 for sure as far as music, uniqueness, and it's setting in nature.   I'll stop rambling now, just let me know what you think!!!

Uhhh, where do I sign up?   Count me in for four tickets if not more. :)

I'm particularly fond of your use of the phrase "centrally located."

I won't say the name of the place just yet.   But I will say that there are airports within an hour of this spot (we would run shuttles) and as far as driving goes...
3 hours from KC
5 hours from STL
10 hours from CHI
4 hours from Memphis
5 hours from Dallas
12 hours from Denver
10 hours from Atlanta
VERRRY CENTRALLY located in the great U.S. of A.

Post by: blainesanders on Apr 30, 2008, 12:36 PM
hahaha... no, i just don't wanna give it away before I know if this will happen.
I just need some votes from the fans to see if we could get enough people (but not too many) to make this thing be PERFECT!!!  I want this to be an experience that the band and fans will never forget.  We aren't going to do this thing unless MMJ is the band.  And as a fan of the band, this area of the country, and music festivals in general... we want this to be something that EVERYONE will be proud of!!!

so.... who's coming with me???

Awesome... again, we aren't looking to make a killing or anything.  Just looking to have the perfect music-meets-nature weekend!!

The setting we are wanting is the beautiful Ozark Mountains!!!
This will probably be my last post because I don't want to get WAAAAAAAY ahead of myself.  I'm just trying to do some market research to see if the numbers work like I think they will.  If this happens.  I will see you all next year!!!  But please continue to vote.  This thread is important to this whole idea!

There's already a Jacket Festival. It's called Jacketfest.

Memorial Day weekend wouldn't be a good choice, this year. Did you contact management to see if they'd even be interested in a Jacket Fest?

I hate being the first guy to be iffy, because it is a nifty idea, but $100 sounds steep for just My Morning Jacket and camping/hiking. Couple $100 with the gas to get to a centrally located venue, plus whatever other expenses... Bonnaroo is, what, $200, and they have My Morning Jacket and about two dozen other huge acts I want to see.

Post by: blainesanders on Apr 30, 2008, 02:12 PM
Don't feel bad at all about adding any input.  That's why I'm doing this!!  There will be other music, other bands, etc. but we want MMJ to be the FOCUS of this thing.  And $100 was just a guess.  We're just trying to use nice round numbers to get a good idea as if this will be fiscally worth it or not.  We're not trying to make a killing (like Bonnaroo), we are just trying to do something positive that everyone would enjoy!!

This would NOT be for THIS year!!! This is a plan for the future, I'm just seeing if you guys would like to come.  We are not trying to compete with Jacketfest (which I didn't know this existed, where do I get tickets???).  We are trying to put on a positive, amazing, nature-meets-music, mini-festival or music weekend.  We are considering doing 2 nights... Jacket headlines 1 night... someone else (say THE MARS VOLTA) does the second night.  I know that I would pay $100 to see MMJ and TMV back to back... I just don't know if EVERYONE would pay $100.  We definitely don't want it to be a rip-off, but we don't want to lose money either.

This may not end up being JACKETFEST PART II.  I just know that if we are going to do this thing, this is the main act we want to be involved with!!  I have seen 1000's of shows and I consider MMJ fans to be the best in the biz right now!!!

more YAY/NAY votes would be great.  I have to go for now!

I agree with having them for 2 nights as well.  It would definitely make it worth it to make it out to the middle of the world.

maybe a Jim James solo picnic lunch show.  then for the other bands have some My Morning Jacket friendly folks.... ie: M. Ward, Andrew Bird, Dr. Dog, Wax Fang (Eddie Vedder.... announce this after it sells out to keep it to the MMJ diehards  ;) )

HONESTLY... how many people do you think will come???  I SERIOUSLY think 10,000 is do-able.  Again, I'm not asking this to try and make a ton more money on this thing.  I'm asking because the more people that show up, the more room we have to do other things like add more bands!!!
Title: Re: would you go to a JACKET festival.. PLEASE VOT
Post by: blainesanders on Apr 30, 2008, 06:15 PM
that being said... keeping it small is the key.  don't want a HUGE crowd to where it's miserable, just like-minded people who are there for the same reason.  To meet new people, spend time in an awesome atmospher, and have a good time at a big old camp out with a great band, i don't wanna do this thing unless the conditions are ideal... i know you can't control the rain, but if everyone is there, they can play whenever the weather allows.  I'm sure most people would watch them play any time of day anyways.  And I think that MMJ fans have the capacity to chip in and make this thing work out and run smoothly!!

Two nights of MMJ, or even couple of afternoon solo shows from Jim and Carl, and I'm in. Petting Zoo? Sounds kid friendly and relevant (Llamas, lemurs, and bears, please!)

If you go through with this, I know a very adequate artist who can design a poster.

While this idea sounds great, and dreaming is fun. Its just not realistic to expect 10k people to come to this. Maybe you could get 2k to come if you are lucky. No way this would cover your costs of bands/venue/insurance.

You would have to make a huge investment (gamble) to get this going. Are you prepared financially for that?

This uncle of mine lives in Iowa and had a corn farm. One day he bulldozed his crops and built a ball field. People said he was crazy...until ghosts showed up and he had a catch with his dad.

Post by: blainesanders on May 01, 2008, 09:25 AM
We think 10K is the ABSOLUTE IN OUR WILDEST DREAMS number, and this is the amount of people we want to be prepared for... just in case.  I think 3 to 5K is VERY realistic.  And I honestly think that would cover it.  However, once word got out that MMJ is playing 2 nights, you don't have to leave, go back to your hotel, and you will be surrounded by one of the more beautiful areas of land in this country... people will come... oh yes, Ray... they will come.  Plus, MMJ will have ANOTHER year to build even MORE momentum (which we all know is constant with this band right now).  AND add in that if we do this on Memorial Day weekend 2009, it will be the first awesome event that college students have a chance to go to... SCHOOOOLZZZZ OUT 4 EVA!!!
anyways, there is still a TON more work to be done by our team, but if the finances work out, and our partners are in, we'll probably approach the band!  Again, we aren't trying to make a killing, and that's why this will work!!

Title: Re: would you go to a JACKET festival.. PLEASE VOT
Post by: blainesanders on May 01, 2008, 03:20 PM
yeah, moe. has a festival called moe.down in which they play 3 nights and bring in some other bands.  i do believe they do this on Labor Day weekend every year.  We would be trying to do something similar, only with a few less bands during the DAY and more activities... then once that sun starts to go down, have an opening band play a FULL set.  Then have MMJ play from say 10 til 1 or 2 AM.  This is just the beginning of the planning stages, I just want to know if the demand is there or not.  I just think this fan-base is itching for something like this!!  If you're gonna do it, why not do it in the middle of the US and do it RIGHT!!!  3 nights would be great, but 2 is probably more affordable for us right now.  We shall see... We've got to put the business plan together and then see about further partnership and financing.  Then we would take that plan to the band and see what they think.  I strongly feel that if enough of you guys are interested, the band will be too.  They are all about crazy ideas and I think this one is the perfect mixture of sanity and craziness!!

Hello,
If you're totally serious about this (as in you have backing and all that), you may want to consider approaching the band's management ASAP to present your idea to them.  Scheduling, insurance, pricing, etc. are all serious concerns (as I'm sure you're aware) when garnering the attention/support of any major band.

That said, go to the contact page and let 'er rip, if you haven't already.

Peace.

festival yes. dj tents yes. but i would be much more creative with the other activities. without being goofy or overly artsy, there should be some unique things to check out or get involved in even though the activities you mentioned sound great. I just got back from Coachella (for example) and that place was a field day at night with all types of crazy displays and interactive things to stumble into, a big part of the experience. even on a smaller scale, that approach i think would make the difference.

Yes, my point exactly.  You can plan all day long on 5K people showing up, but will they?  And you can plan all day long to have MMJ show up, but will they?  I'm guessing no, unless of course this went through management and whatnot.

Why not just say Led Zep are playing?  ;)

we ARE serious about this.  we are working on the business plan right now!!  again, this is for NEXT year.  our plan totally revolves around MY MORNING JACKET playing this thing.  They are the only band we want because they have the only nation-wide crowd we want.  If MMJ doesn't want to play the festival, then it is a "no-go".  Again, I'm not just trying to get my "rawks" off here.  I can pay $30 for a ticket to see MMJ.  There is no way I would risk say $200,000 of my life just to see a weekend of shows.  We won't do this thing unless it makes fiscal sense... which we think it will.  We still have some work to do before approaching the band.  IE: we want to make sure ALL of our ducks are in a row before we shoot the idea their way.  No worries about the fest being "weird and eclectic", that will NOT be a problem.  In fact, that's the whole idea!!  The thing is, the nature around this area will provide most of the day time entertainment by itself.  Especially considering most Jacket-heads are city-folk.  I just decided to poll this message board (and many others) to see if the interest was even there at all.  As per this thread, it seems as if many of you would make it out there if the timing were right.  We want to put on a festival that the band, fans, and festival management leave saying, "Damn, I can't WAIT to do that again."

soooo.... who's coming with me!!???  Votes STILL welcome!!

P.S.  once this thing gets off the ground, I probably won't post again.  It will be a little while before we find out, so I feel safe posting until then.  feel free to drop by with ideas.  We want this thing to be as interactive as possible.  A "choose your own adventure" per say.

Um, isn't getting the headlining band Job #1?  I'm confused.  You state emphatically your seriousness, but haven't even approached the band and/or management about this at all.  (or maybe you have, and won't admit that yet)

If you are serious, you best contact them ASAP to see if its even in the realm of their schedule.  Don't get me wrong, I'm pumped that you want to do this, but I'm just confused about your "plan".

seems a little presumptuous to think that you could secure the band for something like this. especially as a new promoter. festivals are notoriously difficult to organize, i doubt you'd be able to get such a big band with little experience. not trying to be an asshole.
Title: Re: would you go to a JACKET festival.. PLEASE VOT
Post by: blainesanders on May 10, 2008, 11:23 AM
Just to clear a few things up.  (I don't really want to concentrate on this, but I want to make sure you all know our intentions are good.)

We are not new to the game of "promoting concerts".  The first festival that I promoted took place over 10 years ago (before MMJ was even a band).  But that festival was with a MUCH different team and located in Colorado, not Arkansas.  The people we are working with have put on NUMEROUS festivals in this area.  All of which have been a great success.  They just have NO IDEA who MMJ is, or what the MMJ community is like.  That's where our specific company will come into play.  We want to break barriers here between promoters, fans, and the band to make something ENTIRELY unique.  If it doesn't happen, then the only thing wasted is our time.  That said, time has always been something that I've always been willing to give up in order to explore a good idea.

No worries here fans, we aren't trying to do some sub-par, half-assed event.  We have a wonderful team of experience professionals that are excited about the idea!!
All I am looking for in this thread is whether or not you would attend if given the opportunity.  We know the pros and cons of putting on a festival.  Each of the different groups involved have been down this road many times before.  So please, don't worry about us.  There are PLENTY of things to do before contacting the band.  TRUST ME on this one!!  If certain things don't come together like they need to, there is no point in contacting the band at all.  I know many of you are wary of this just because I am a fan of the band.  But just so you know, most festivals are put on by fans who have the resources to make an idea come into fruition.  I know that none of you are trying to be an asshole (thats what we LOVE about the MMJ community), and you are just trying to look out for our best interests, and the interest of your favorite band.  I totally understand, appreciate, and respect your comments.  Rest assured, we know what we're doing and have got this thing under control.

In order to keep from jeopardizing the event, this will be my last post in THIS thread, (you'll definitely see me around in others!)
If this thing does come into fruition, it will be something special and we'd hope to see as many of you there as can make it!!  The Ozarks of Arkansas are AMAZING this time of year, and we have NO doubt this would be something very special!!

Please feel free to keep voting!  And have fun seeing MMJ this summer and fall!!!   :D
