Toronto: me for sure

I will be at the Toronto show, I can't wait!

mmm that looks like a good place.
i saw them open for wilco at the metropolis fourteen billion years ago, and i liked that place, too.
maybe it's because montreal is better than toronto.
yeah, i said it.

I agree, but you can't beat Toronto's neighbourhoods.
that's true. right now where i live, it's not really a "neighbourhood" b/c we're on a major street. but whenever i've lived on a residential street, i've always enjoyed my neighbours. and the various shops around here feel like a neighbourhood.
from this week's NOW mag:

those are some nice things to say, but... i didn't think MMJ's concert was part of NXNE...
jaimoe, does that seem right to you?

I think the organizers have piggy-backed the MMJ concert with the NXNE fest. At least it feels like they did. Whatever. It's good news for the festival.
Me and Me
:) more canadians!! (i think. are you?)
I can't wait for the Toronto show.
It sucks we aren't get a full 'evening' like the american cities are, but it's gonna be a blast. I'm taking like 6 people with me that have never seen them before, so i hope they play lots of mmj classics. That being said, i cant wait to hear the new stuff live.
I would die if they played 'steam engine' I really would.
It feels like forver since i have last seen them.
Ok that's the end of dumb fanboy post...
im just too excited!
I'll be there with 2 newbies or perhaps as many as 4 newbies.
Not expecting anything pre-Z other than One Big Holiday and Golden
And one other from the Pre It Still Moves Era. They are playing Oxen town though.
Billo
Glad to be reconnected to the 'forum family' after many months away.
Good morning ;)
does anyone know how we get some requests for the playlists?
not to sound important or anything.. but I'm making a big effort to attend and driving 8 hrs as this is my closest venue and I've been waiting for a Canadian date for awhile now... I'M GOING TO DO A BOTTLE DRIVE TO GET TO TORONTO this weekend... and man oh man... would be all worth it if I get to hear them perform "the Bear"
Dress as a bear.
8 hours where are you the Sault?

I really want to hear mahgeetah, one big holiday, run thru, and steam engine, lol.
Guess i'm dreaming...
For those going to the Toronto gig on Monday, I'll be at the Jason George Pub (Front Street and Jarvis) for some pre-drinks. If you show up at the pub, I'll be the dude wearing the vintage Toronto Blue Jays jersey. Looking forward to the show... to say the least.

I am looking forward to hearing about this show. I tried to make it up there but just could not with the NYC trip so close.

I also can't find that thread where we talked about this but I wanted to comment about you being from one of my favorite cities in Canada, Kingston right?. That was odd that I mentioned it and you are originally from there...strange?. It is a beautiful city as is Toronto.
It was the thread about the poor guy that can't get a diagnosis for his debilitating ailment.
That's right, I'm the one from Kingston. I think Kingston is a prettier city than Toronto; it embraces history whereas developers in Toronto try to destroy the past. Toronto's still a great town though. Too bad you can't make the show, however, if I had to pick, I'd rather go to the MMJ Montreal gig. Better venue and a better vibe.
I can't wait for this show, it's going to be a looooooong day at work....
Any opener tonight.
How long is this type of set expected to be?
Are they recovered from Roo yet?
New to the board and the Band - will be at the show tonight down front.
Thanks
Jeff

MMJ play one long set - I'd bet on it being longer than 2 hours 15 minutes. Expect them to hit the stage between 9 - 9:30.
The opening band is The Besnard Lakes, yet another great Montreal band: http://www.myspace.com/thebesnardlakes
I'll be near the front, wearing my old school Blue Jays jersey.
Too bad the show is at the kool haus.
If the doors open at 8, wouldn't that mean that the opening band would start around 9?
i'm not sure cause i dont go to many shows there...
What is the deal with MMJ in Canada?
Looked at venues over the last 5-6 years.. Lee's Palace, Opera House
Then down in the US its Bonaroo, MSG, Red Rocks and so on...
They seem to have the reverse issue The Tragically Hip has had in a way over the years. I drive down to see them play Irving Plaza in NYC and Theater Of Living Arts in Philly - then a month later I see them here in Arena's 2-3-4 nights in a row within an hour of each other.
Looking froward to the live show bigtime.
Jeff
The lee's palace show was amazing. And as crappy as the opera house is, it was sweet to see the band play in a small venue like that. Unlike the kool haus, ugh..i hate that place.
But i don't really care, because mmj are going to be amazing tonight my friend, amazing. I just hope they play steam engine...
Oh, and i heard something about jim's omnichord getting destroyed in the rain at bonnarroo, i hope he has a back up!!! Cause i want me some touch me part 2 tonight, y'all!
The deal with MMJ in Canada? Well, no one knows who the hell they are. They ain't even big in the States yet.
WOW.
that show was amazing.
it's definitely going to be high on the list of best mmj shows i have ever been to...
i am going to have to re-evaluate my top 5 shows list.
wow.
wow.
Tonight's show ranks #4 of the 4 MMJ show's I've been to. I'm not jumping through hoops over Evil Urges, so tonight's Evil Urges-heavy set detracted from my overall enjoyment. I wasn't alone either, and you are kidding yourself if anyone here thinks differently. The encore saved the night and overall, I liked the concert; it's just not killer like previous shows.

I am slightly disheartened by last night's show and wrote what I wrote accordingly. I do not put too much on my personal opinion, however I am a music reviewer and I gotta call it the way I see it. In fairness, I liked a number of Evil Urges tunes last night, but none compared to their older stuff, save "Librarian", "Evil Urges", "I'm Amazed" and a couple more - and few bands out there can unleash new material and expect them to upstage the older stuff. I walked and looked around constantly and it was obvious that the crowd really got a charge out of older tunes. I was at the Berkeley Church show a few months ago in Toronto and thought that it was a better show than the one last night, and most of this is attributed to pacing; and the Evil Urges tunes were better received.
what was the setlist? what older tunes did they pull out?
Quotewhat was the setlist? what older tunes did they pull out?
I don't have the setlist, but my friend wrote down most of the tunes. He'll be at work soon, so I'll post it when and if I can. Older tunes? Well, they played a rousing version of "Lowdown", "Golden" (of course), "Gideon", "Off The Record", "One Big Holiday", "Run Thru", "Lay Low", "Steam Engine". The rest was fleshed-out by Evil Urges tunes.
I'd love to see a set list for Toronto. but I'll probably miss it because I've got to go pack the car for Montreal.. 8-)

Don't forget SNL! And the covers of Spin, Billboard, Paste, etc.
Everyone around me was going nuts for the new stuff. Save perhaps for remnants, and touch me part 1. Of course people are going to freak out for the older stuff, that's what happens. But the new stuff was received very well, save for 1 or 2 songs.
I couldnt believe how good sec walking sounded live.
The crowd was high energy all night, it definitely was not a show that was 'saved by the encore' that's for sure...

For a MMJ concert, the crowd energy was just pretty good. Shockingly, I saw quite a few people leave before the encore. It thinned out noticably on the right of stage.
Just registered (have browsed these threads for a long time) to comment on the show.
Personally loved it, and loved the way the Evil Urges stuff translated live. Crowd was pretty tame and clearly more receptive to the older stuff, but come on; the album was released six days ago, the venue's acoustics are not great, and it was a Monday night.
With those factors stacked against the band, I still thought they were terrific.

I agree with all of that, except I just "liked" the show. The pacing was a little strange too though. The Berkeley Church show had a similar set list but was almost mind-blowing.

If you do not mind me asking, who do you review music for? I must say I am disappointed as I really wanted to hear an awesome review...Was it an intimate setting? How many does the venue hold? How did SteamEngine sound. I am hoping to hear that song live, in concert. If I don't get tickets to Friday I have to wait until end of August. :'(
Did you see EC at the show? Do you know her? Just curious....as I know from the postings that she was here for a long time and had planned to go to the Toronto show...

It was an awesome show, on a monday night, at a horrible venue. I guess if someone doesn't like Evil Urges, I can see why they would be disappointed. But I have seen mmj about 6 or 7 times, and I think last night's show was incredible.
I did see EC at the show. We chatted briefly. She's doing well, looks fabulous and is very busy with her music.
I've been a writer for Jambands.ca for 5 years and I recently got hired for the online music magazine SoundProof. They want my review of last night's show by the end of the day, but I've only had four hours sleep and I'm at my regular job today (I work for a music TV channel).
The Kool Haus is a general admission concert hall that holds 2000 comfortably. It's my least favourite concert venue in Toronto and I've seen tons of shows there. It's a cavernous place and the acoustics are usually suspect and not surprisingly, the sound wasn't very good for most of the night. Jim's voice sounded pretty good though. I'm going to give the show a positive review, but it wasn't as good as past shows.

You got that right. I hate the kool haus. Toronto has some pretty bad venues. I remember the time I saw Belle and Sebastian at the docks, and the Pixies at Arrow Hall. Seeing such good bands at such horrible venues can be really frustrating...
You people will be begging for EU stuff in a few years once it's "old" stuff.
Enjoy it now!

I stand corrected: Arrow Hall is by far the worst venue in the city followed by The Docks. I was at that Pixies show and hated hated hated that souless venue; Kool Haus feels like Massey Hall by comparison.

Fantastic show last night!
Yes, it was heavy on the new record and there were only 2 pre-ISM...but this band is so good it doesn't matter what they play, they blow the roof off.
Some funny things were: they had some technical difficulites, Jim's V didn't work for Amazed, and there was some problems with the drums and Jim said "We just played in Bonnaroo and it poured rain the whole time...when you mix water with electronics things get fucked up." Then said they would work through it for us! It was pretty funny. He also said it's nice to know the weekend isn't over just because it's Monday! haha.
The encore was mindblowing as well. Steam Engine was great. I love watching Patrick during his solo. OBH was amazing and I thought it was going to be the end. Then RUN THRU! It is so loud and heavy and amazing live. I giggled the whole way through. Anytime followed and was also amazing.
The new stuff sounds great. The more familiar stuff definitely got the crowd going a lot more, but I think for the most part everyone seemed to enjoy the new stuff too.
Both Touch Mes are amazing live. Especially Pt 2. For sure a major highlight of the show. He played the Omnichord with his face at one point while playing the guitar!
Jim looked like he was having a blast during The Way That He Sings. And the whole band rocked incredibly hard during the entire encore. Carl was jumping around doing windmills. Amazing!
We're lucky to love this band. No matter the set list they deliver every single time. I will not complain that they don't play too many songs off of the first two records because what they do play is so amazing.
Enjoy the rest of the tour!
sounds awesome.
anyone that doesn't expect a heavy Evil Urges set is crazy..this is the Evil Urges tour!
QuoteEspecially Pt 2. For sure a major highlight of the show. He played the Omnichord with his face at one point while playing the guitar! -
I have this video along with 2or 3 others, 2 Audio Files, a photo of the setlist, lots of other photos and a full review of my first experience with these guys.
I was Blown away standing 12 feet from JJ.
It will take 24hrs to get it all uploaded to share. This will be the first place I post it all!
If I didn't have a family at home I would drive to Montreal today by myself no questions asked! I have a lot of questions to get up to speed on this band but that will come after I assemble my show archive and get it all live.
Jeff
thanks Jeff!
we will try to answer any questions you have!
Just went thru my photos and after looking at the setlist photo "At Dawn" was on the setlist before "Wordless" in the encore set.
Also instead of "I'm Amazed" they have the words "I'm Amused" 8-)
Jeff
The show was so amazing. I'm still reeling...
For those of you disappointed about the EU-heavy set list, you're crazy! I thought so many of the songs sounded great, esp. Aluminum Park and Remnants.
I really disliked Highly Suspicious upon first listen but now LOVE it, and I had a feeling it was going to be amazing live, which it was.
Touch Me Pt 2 was like some sort of rockin' disco wonderland.
The encore was INSANE - people really started to let loose and dance. The band was obviously having a great time and it was contagious. I thought I was going to cry when I heard the opening notes of Run Thru.
Random observation: I noticed that the crowd was very MALE - long lines for the men's room, short one for the ladies - for once! :-)
More girls need to come out to th shows and dance it up!!!
well its about 16 hours since the show ended and my ears are still ringing like crazy. We were able to get right in front of JJ and had the railing to keep us up. What an amazing show. This is my fourth time, and this, for me, was fantastic; technical issues and all.
I was able to record, but havent had the opportunity to listen/edit it yet, but will put it up asap. Ill throw up some pics and the link later.
Cheers,
Yv
Yeah it was an amazing show for sure. Don't listen to the few jaded people who don't like the new stuff, the show was electric.

I saw them last year and it was a great show, aside from the fact that the show was at one of the worst venues (yet best bars) in SK.

I thought they were pretty good. They certainly got better as their set wore on. The crowd was pretty receptive towards them too when they decided to pay attention: the cure of the opening band.
I know its early... but any word on the set from last night?

So did Grace play with them? she rules.
No guests last night. Jim did mention a thanks to Brad Barr (The Slip/Surprise Me Mr Davis) for making it possible for them to play the show - maybe some equipment failed after all the rain at Bonnaroo? (my best guess, pure speculation)

The Review is pretty long especially if you watch the videos in the middle of it... so for those who just want to see some photos go here

QuoteSo I was a little longer than 24 hours but better late then ever.
As promised this is the first place I am posting up my link to my Review of the Toronto Show... which includes 4-6 videos, some photos and links to my 50+ photos on Flickr etc.
I am not a writer... just a music lover who happens to have stumbled on MMJ only in the last 90 days and wants to share in my own style how the show was for me.
