They dont play in Europe too often so it shouldnt be a surprise that they are going with a lot of the old standards.  They have been adding some things here and there (Heartbreakin' Man, for instance) but I think its a good move on their part. They know what their audiences want to hear and they are doing a good job of making the fans happy, IMO. I think once they get back stateside they may pull some rare rabbits out of their hat.

It's also important to remember that their catalog is larger than what it was on their last tour. Adding another 13 songs to their repertoire is going to force some of the old stuff out. I think they are doing a good job of mixing the old with the new. Some bands dont make as much of an effort to do this. I saw Iron and Wine right after The Sheppard's Dog came out and he played the entire new album with just a handful of his older stuff. I loved it, especially because he had an 8 piece band, but you could tell some of the crowd wasnt as enthusiastic about it. Like the guy screaming "Trapeze Swinger!" after every song, for instance...

WTF?  I get so tired of this.   They "switch it up" more than 95% of all the bands out there, yet somebody still always complains.   The album has been out for less than a month for crying out loud.  Let 'em play it a bit.

Let's say tonight they do a setlist consisting of 4 Tennesse Fire songs and 4 At Dawn songs at the expense of 8 Z/Evil Urges songs.   Well let me tell ya, watch the fuck out for all of the complaints the band would get for not playing the new stuff.  You just can't win.

Seriously though, I would like someone to name a band that has been around less than ten years that has a more diverse setlist night by night.  I'm sure there are some, but I want a list.

Oxxys, I'm not jumping your case specifically, I just don't get it.

I was going to say Black Crowes but you had to throw in the 10 year limit.  I will admit I find MMJ's setlist a little too familiar but thats because I was raised on the Dead, adored Phish for years and still enjoy a lot of the Jam band's still in existence.  It's ok for the setlist's to be similar, unless maybe your catching two or three shows back to back, then it might get stale.

I went to  two Black Crowes shows 3 weeks apart and they played maybe 3 songs out of 20 or so the same, it was incredible and thats why I will go see them as much as possible when they come around.

I just think Ox is saying that with a 85-100 song catalog, plus covers, why do 20 of the same songs get played everynight?  While I see the point, I'm not complaining.

I just hate it for the people whom I've encouraged to become fans-recently.  They may have fallen in love with At Dawn but only get one song...or maybe they love Z and get 'What a Wonderful Man' every night but can't find an 'Into the Woods' anywhere.  They are excited about seeing them and have plans to see two-four shows but are expecting the same encore.

For those of us who have seen them over the passed several years, we get how it works a little, but I could use an 'Honest Man' instead of a '...Wonderful Man...' occasionally.  Maybe a 'Lowdown' instead of a 'Lay Low.'

Hey, the Crowes are in my top three bands of all time.  I've seen them probably in the 20-25 time range.  One of the reasons I love them so much are the different setlists.   Nobody tops them for setlists.  Covers, etc.  But I wonder if we went back to 1999 after By Your Side (5th Studio album) came out and looked at setlists immediately following that album what they would look like.

I do know that in the past whenever MMJ has played two nights in the same city, they try to mix it up as much as possible while still playing some of the regulars.

I can name a lot more than 1:

Widespread Panic
Ween
Phil Lesh & Friends
Dave Matthews Band
Phish and all related side projects
STS9
Radiohead

etc, etc, etc....

I love MMJ as much as the next guy/gal, but they could seriously learn a lesson or two about REALLY learning to switch up there setlists, thereby  keeping the shows fresh, and keeping there fans excited.

I have faith in the boys in switching up the setlists when they return to the states... the europe shows seem to be appealing to a different demographic of fans. Also there is a support act on the Euro leg tour so this might be affecting the setlists due to the time constraint. Either way im sure the boys will melt faces as they have been for the past decade no matter what they choose to shred.  I'm sure the louisville show will have some rare rabbits  :D

A couple of things

1.  Bo Dereks Tits.....great name!!!!

2.  Radiohead and MMJ are very similar on setlist variance.

3.  MMJ is better than all of the bands on your list (RADIOHEAD EXCLUDED)  I know because I have seen all of them several times (WEEN EXCLUDED i just dont get it)

MMJ is not a Jamband.

These guys do a pretty damn good job are mixing it up....no they are not WSP or PHISH......they damn sure are not Kanye West his show is the same every night!

So with all of this being said i say "FUCK YOU KANYE" :)

I just don't see the big deal in them playing a similar set every night.
Don't bother me none.

All I know is that in 2006 they played every song on all four of their albums except 7.  Plus they also played Tonight I Want 2 Celebrate, O Is The One, Cobra, Sooner, Sweetheart and I Can't Wait.  Plus they played eleven different covers.   That's a total of 60 different songs.

I know this because I'm in the cult.

Oh, and Radiohead has been around 28 years, Phish 25 years, Ween 23 years, Widespread 22 years, DMB 17 years, and I think Phil has quite a few years of material to choose from.  I've not yet heard of etc, etc, etc but I very intersted in checking them out.

So, at this point we have STS9.  Any others?

I had this same observation when I got the Jacket fish hook set and they began reeling me in in 2004.  It would be tough for me to follow Jacket around like I have Panic for years simply because of the fact you're likely to see pretty much the same show each night.

We all have to realize, the are supporting Evil Urges so they will focus primarily on this album for the tour.

The only song I would like to see back in rotation is THE DARK.

I mean even a huge band like Pearl Jam switches there set lists up every single night and they are less jam bandy than MMJ.

Yup, it's the same thing as the Z/Okonokos tour: standard setlist at the beginning and loosen it up as the tour goes along.
