Extremely excited for the upcoming Myrtle Beach show.
My question:
With all of this hype over the US tour--An Evening With MMJ, no opening acts, starts promptly at 8:00---I am expecting this thing to be a pretty damn good time. I have seen MMJ a number of times and they always put on an excellent show. However, what makes this tour so special? Why has MMJ chosen no opening act? Are they playing more songs, is there a ridiculous light show behind them? Are there puppets on stage? I guess the main question is- What is so special about this tour that it get's its own name and doesn't need an opening band? Thanks.

1. Yes.
2. Yes. And it's getting better from what I hear.
3. Yes.
4. They are playing anywhere from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours, they are on fire this tour and they want the stage to themselves (as do I).

Are you kidding about the puppets? I hope you aren't.
Anyone else care to talk about what makes this tour different from the rest?
We got puppets in Louisville!

No opening band.
More MMJ songs.
2.5 hours shows.
Evil Urges songs.
That's it bud.
is this(the NY show in particular) their next live dvd possibly?
So were their puppets at the last two shows? I see that there were in Louisville, but that was a homecoming show and not technically "An Evening With..." show.

puppets at louisville because the puppets were from louisville. no more puppets.
besides, abe lincoln's head fell off during one big holiday.... now thats a sentence I never thought I'd say.
they are playing about an hour longer than they usually do. Hence "special".
it's an "evening with My Morning Jacket" because your spending an evening with My Morning Jacket.
Let's see how many different people can give the same answer ;D

So in regards to the puppets one might say..."No dice..."?

Agreed about Honest Abe, it was pretty surreal. Wasnt quite sure thats what I was really seeing. :o
Who gives a rats ass about an opening band! More MMJ!

No opening band.
Rare MMJ songs, instead of covers.
3+ hour shows.
Extended jams.
Insane encores.

you're killing me here...what's so special? if you've seen them live and heard their albums-then surely you realize by now they don't need an opening band, they don't puppets or laser light shows--if they have it, it's an added bonus..they are the best live band around and just be glad they're coming to a town near you, go drink your iced coffee and be on your way! chop chop! :P
What kind of fucking question is this?

I'm not asking it in a "woopty doo, who cares" kinda way....I was sincerely asking. I have seen MMJ live three times....and was able to go to the MMJ prom a year or so ago...and I do think seeing MMJ perform 1 song, let alone 25 is super-di-duper special. I just wanted to know how this tour differed from the others I have been to.
I agree though....I am glad there is no opening band. Whenever I see the Jacket I hate having to wait for hours on end to see them play. So thanks for the feedback guys. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing MMJ play an extended set (even though I get no headless Abe Lincoln which sucks).....hopefully I'll hear some rarities I have never heard live before.

Guaranteed, my friend. ;)
The crazy thing is, I didnt even see the John Wilkes Booth puppet...
Was that too much?
Too soon, Mr. rud, too soon.

Ha!
I hope a video surfaces of Lincoln losing his head....not in real life, but on MMJ's stage. I don't think the real assassination has hit youtube yet....I heard Henry Rathbone caught most of it on his iphone though.

awesome ;D

You didn't recognize him; he was disguised as a giant owl with a spinning head.

I can't believe this question was asked! The longer your favorite band plays for, the more "special", the "evening", "with" them can and will be.
QuoteWhat kind of fucking question is this?
That's what I came hear to say. It's like asking: How am I supposed to eat if all I have is food?
:-/

obviously you didn't read the post or my responses....oh well. Maybe I should have titled the thread "How is this tour different or better?" I've been a huge fan since '03...I'm not complaining...I was asking what to expect when I went.
Screw it...I'll change the topic name so everyone will chill.
screw u guys... home...
We got right around 2.5 hours in Nashville. Great to see/hear the new stuff! i was hoping for a little different setlist, but i'll take it. i don't think we got any covers...? The lights were pretty sweet. No complaints. Grrreat as always.
