God damn, I want to hear Evelyn!
QuoteGod damn, I want to hear Evelyn!
No shit!
one of the best shows i've been to in a long time.....
great crowd...amazing energy...
"lay low", "cobra" & "dondante" were my favorites...but the whole damn show was amazing!
Theres' a lay low jam that's on you tube that I uploaded for a guy last year at a seattle show (i think) that is a beautiful capture! I can't get to Youtube at work or I'd link it... go find it someone!
I was about to say, "Evelyn and Easy Morning Rebel! No fucking way!" But apparently it was too good to be true and Easy Morning wasn't played.
Nice, Evelyn and ALMOST the first easy morning rebel in awhile.
I showed up pretty early to Stubbs (4:30PM) to get my tickets from Will Call and get in line to secure a good standing spot. I'm walking to Stubbs then all of a sudden I'm Amazed starts (band was in soundcheck). The ticket office didn't open till 5:30PM so my wife and I decided to go have a drink on 6th street to kill sometime. While walking I was able to hear clear as day Evelyn and Easy Morning Rebel. I told my wife if they play EMR that will make my night. Since it was rehearsed I thought we were gonna hear it for sure but they ran out time.
The show was still so epic beyond comprehension. My right ear is still ringing. Props to MMJ stage crew for giving me earplugs for my wife and friends girlfriend. We stood on the right side 1st –2nd row. Jim James sweat from rocking and shredding through solo's was right in front of us. Highlights:
-Anytime is a very awesome opener. Band came on and stood around Patrick ready to unleash on his call. Patrick had this smile knowing they wanted to have a great show.
-They played the best version of Lay Low ever last night!!
-Evil Urges songs are perfect live. I drove from San Antonio to see the famous Houston TX show that debuted 10(or so) songs from Evil Urges. They sounded great that night, now they sound like MMJ live classics.
-Touch Me Part II needs to be played every night from here on out.
-It was really nice to hear a lot of It Still Moves. I Will Sing You Songs is so beautiful. Brought back great memories seeing these guys at the Parish in 2003. Easy Morning Rebel would have been the icing on the cake.
-Cobra!!
-Jim had a funny rated R speech about it being so hot. I don't blame him. Up front it was a lava pit. I felt bad for Patrick. Dude was soaked after the 1st set. The heat pushed these guys even harder though.
Finally, I've seen MMJ 8 times now and they just keep getting bigger & better, but the energy/effort/performance is still their. I'm very proud as a fan and longtime supporter they keep things very real. Still rocking, having a fun time, and putting on a hell of a show. These guys played nearly 6 hours of music, traveled, and played the Texas heat within 28 hrs.....and showed no signs of fatigue!??!!
Only negative is that I wish the band would play around 4-5 songs from Z. I know it's the bands 1st album recorded with all the members now, but 7 songs from an album not being promoted is quite a bit. When Carl & Bo joined I felt they took the 1st 3 albums to new heights live. Also, whats with all the texting & phones?? I don't see how people can pay for tickets to an event to only have your face/mind occupied with a video device. Enjoy the moment and tell your friends about it after the show.
Again this is a personal rant that should not affect anyone wanting to see the best band on the road right now!! Have fun and consider ear plugs if want to hear the following day.
Get there early if you can. The band manager came out and invited the 7 of us in line in for the sound check preparty. Played I'm amazed, then asked for requests. I asked for lil Billy, but Carl said he didn't know it. Played emr, heartbreakin man, and one other I'm having a brain cramp on. Ended up getting a pick from both Carl and Jim. Jim's pick is sweet! 8-)

I have never understood this. Why would you pay 40 bucks to a show and do nothing but talk and text.
It was pretty bad last night where we were. Luckily not too much of it showed up on the recording.

SO you go to to in early and talk to the band? how many people were in there for that? that is so kickass. I got to the dallas show and hour and a half before doors opened, and i was behind one hundred people. the band is gotten a lot bigger. i was pissed i couldnt make it to stubbs. best band ever.
how long does it take for ears to stop ringing?
I am so envious of the stories told on page 2 of this thread. Fawesome, for sure!
Cobra!
First post but was at the show last night, my 5th time to see them. We ran into the band before the show at dinner. We ended up giving them a cd of our friend's band that had a bluegrass cover of Phone Went West, pretty funny. They were awesome guys, very friendly. The setlist was amazing, wasn't expecting Evelyn or Cobra and loved both. Lively crowd, my buddy was sitting in the VIP on the balcony and said that Jim's wipeout on his power slide was the greatest thing he has ever seen, hopefully someone has video of that.
My gal and I were lucky enough to gain access into the Soundcheck Party. It was amazing! There were only probably 25 of us in there. They opened with I'm Amazed and then asked for requests. I screamed EMR at the same time another lady asked for Evelyn and Jim said sure thing. They ran through Evelyn (which was played much longer and more funkier later in the night) and then kicked EMR right square in the balls. It was the best live version I've ever witnessed (and it really looked like they loved playing it). And then they ended with Heartbreakin' Man. They love Austin and it really showed yesterday.
Now it's time for the ACL TV Taping. I'm hoping for EMR again....
