Nashville was good... Louisville was epic! Abraham Lincoln's head fell off... face meltingly epic! :o :D
this was my 10th show, and by far my favorite. the show was a baptismal of reverb, and funky bass lines (even though one girl beside me complained the entire time about it being too loud). in my opinion, it was nothing short of magical.
my husband got approached by velocity because of his bizarre indian head-dress get up. apparently he's going to be in an issue. everyone was taking pictures with him, and giving him free beer. it was hilarious. ::)
i do have one complaint, well really two.
the trash after the show was heartbreaking for me. i saw everything from batteries, to old whiskey bottles and abandoned blankets. and a sea of plastic cups. what happened to "going green"? i guess when it comes down to it, people talk the talk, but cant walk the walk.
and the glow sticks. i personally had a blast with them, but i can tell you that the band themselves did not appreciate hoards of glow sticks being chucked at them. they are trying to a put on a monumental show for their home town, and they get pelted by painful glowsticks. seriously, i was up front, center, two rows back, and i saw jim, carl, and tom get hit several times, including in the face. thats pretty immature and shitty in my opinion.
but hope everyone had a blast, and stayed safe. i witnessed two people in front of me over exert themselves and collapse from god knows what. hope these incidents were few and far between.
great show boys, louisville finally got its show. and boy did you bring the house down!! :D
i can telll you... it was fucking amazing.... you are too old for glow sticks then because they make the band go so much more buck nashvegas owned my face yours and everyone elses stop being a bitch about people jammin... i couldnt believe how many people who werent even feelking it.... ive been straight from nashvegas to louvegas then to KC grow up u nasrt nates :D ;D ;D >:( :( 8-) :o :o :o :o :o :o >:( >:( ;D ;D :D

Holy
Fucking
Fuck
I have seen Rage Against the Machine. I've seen Wilco five times. I've seen Radiohead in a 200 (yes, two hundred) capacity venue.
I've never seen a concert like tonight.
Out of order, they played:
Anytime (opener)
Off the Record
Gideon
Evil Urges
Touch Me Part I
The Way That He Sings
Heartbreakin' Man
What A Wonderful Man
Where To Begin
Golden
I'm Amazed
Thank You Too!
Mahgeetah (mid-set, I was surprised)
Phone Went West
Two Halves
Look At You (Jim solo)
Aluminum Park
Lay Low
Dondante
Smokin>
Touch Me Part II
Then, the ridiculous encore (in order):
Wordless Chorus
Highly Suspicious
COBRA
Steam Engine (no drum solo)
Run Thru
Dancefloors
One Big Holiday
They came on stage at 8:25 exactly (late start to allow the huge line of people to all get in), and they were off stage at 11:21. Just wait for the tapes. The encore might have been MMJ's finest hour.
first War Begun and then COBRA?? WTF is going on?? Did they play the whole thing?? Gebuz.
They played the whole thing (well, as much as they've ever played live--the 3-part, ten minute version)
Jim strutted around wearing a cape during Touch Me Part I, Lay Low, and Wordless Chorus
The entire band played a jam on Low Rider and Oye Como Va with the Louisville Leopard Percussionists (who were fantastic!) about a half hour before show time
The lights were incredible, the band was dead on.
That's flipping sweet. I am patiently waiting for tapes of these shows. Well. . . as patiently as I can.
Have I mentioned lately that I love tapers? You all are my heroes.
Woah.... Nashvegas to Lou Vegas was a great set!!! COBRA!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D
Tonight was my third tie seeing MMJ, everytime it gets better and better! I would and am looking into going to another show on this tour.
Also, im gonna sound like such a noob. but can someone fill me in about these tapes? what are they? and where can you get them??? any info would be nice...

Recordings of the shows--which are more and more inaccurately named as most "tapers" have gone completely digital (or am I behind now and they're *all* digi now?).
Sometimes some very kind people post up links to these "tapes" on this very board, but you can also find them at //archive.org (just search for My Morning Jacket).
I just got back home to Nashville, after having an amazing weekend with the Nashville show and the Louisville show.
Nashville was high energy and full throttle. The highlights for me where War Begun with Fireworks in the back round, Jim James doing a stage slide during Wordless Chorus and the kicks during Dancefloors,
Louisville, was the best jacket show I have ever seen. The encore was like a dream come true, especially when Cobra was played followed by Steam Engine, it doesn't get better then that. The crowd was amazing, everyone was having a great time and not causing any trouble. Jim's speeches where entertaining as well.
One of best weekends of my musical career, Sensory overload, I am in My Morning Jacket Heaven right now. !!!!!!!
AHHH COBRA WAS EPIC.
So nice to get Where To Begin as well.
incredible show... i've seen them seven times and each time just gets better. nowhere in the world tonight was there a better show than MMJ in louisville...

more to come later...
Did anyone get a good picture of the Makers Mark/Evil Urges banner that was hanging in the back of the venue? I heard from a Maker's employee that a crew member (whether he was with the band or the local crew is uncertain) came and ripped it down, saying that is was not allowed to be there. I would hate to think that the band would care about such things, but I could see a park or city member getting offended by a "suggestive" banner that all the highway travelers could see.
For those of you who didn't see it, it was a picture of the top half of a Maker's bottle, with the red wax formed into horns. Above the picture was the words "Evil Urges."
It was BADASS to say the least, and I really wish I could have gotten a print of that. I would pay some hefty money to have that on a poster, unauthorized or not. I don't care.
My two loves in the world-- Maker's and MMJ. Hmmm mmm. :)

I would agree with that; the same thing happened in Nashville. You can see it on the awesome War Begun clip, Jim gets nailed twice.
They look cool but I wouldn't miss them and I know the band wouldn't either. Plus the logic is odd: Hey, there's a guy on stage pouring his heart and soul out through his music, I think I'll throw something at him... :-/
Sounds like good times were had by all. Personally, I like the setlist from Nashville a little better but I have absolutely no doubt that the energy in Louisville was way beyond what it was in Nashville. I look forward to hearing both these shows.
A mere 24 hours after I left, and Im back home in Philadelphia. Have a ton of great pics from the front row that I will post later, but Im in dire need of a shower and nap. Quick impressions...
-Louisville is a beautiful city. I completely fell in love with it in the short time I was there.
-I cant explain how intense it was. Afterward I felt like I got the crap knocked out of me. We had to sit on a bench outside the venue and drink a few bottles of water before we could go anywhere lol.
-Cobra...Cobra...sweet Jesus, Cobra...
-Special thanks to LoveDog and his friend at Bearno's. We hung out there before (downtown) and after (Bardstown Rd) the show and had a great time.
-It was great meeting everyone. LoveDog, AngryEwok, ms yvon and everyone else who I know Im forgetting (apologies, but the past 24 hours have been a freaking blur), I look forward meeting up with you sometime in the future. It was a great way to end the night.
I'll have those pics up in a bit..damn...what a whirlwind :D
there were 4 of us recording up front. I listened to it a bit last night and it sounds pretty good. Thanks to those who were polite and went around instead of straight through us. Also nobody tried screaming into the mics! Mine will be up on archive after I get back from Red Rocks. Hopefully the band will notify the venue that taping is ok and I'll try and get a smoking recording there too!

thanks for the setlist. What an awesome night.
My only complaint was the line situation. The process of getting beers > using the bathroom took upwards of 45 minutes total. I spent at least an hour of the evening just simply waiting in line. Finally I realized the better approach was to just quit drinking altogether, quit using the bathroom, and just enjoy the show and go to a bar afterwards. Other than that, it was a magical night.
what a night!
beautiful weather, full moon, incredible show, a joyous time for all.
thanks for the setlist, i needed help putting it all together again in my jacket-addled brain. and finding out that there will be recordings of the show available........that makes me so happy i could cry. thanks a million for that.
i agree that the only flaw of the evening (aside from abe losing his head) were the lines for both the acquisition and disposal of beer. same thing for me.....i lost four and a half songs to line-waiting (thank you too - lay low) so i just gave up beer for the rest of the night and dealt with some powerful cotton mouth. ;)

Oh yeah, don't forget the one song (2?) with the horn, sax I believe. Also, One Big Holiday with the Squallis Puppeteers.
Intro by Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson.

great show boys, louisville finally got its show. and boy did you bring the house down!! :D
Glowsticks suck period. The band always end up getting hit with them. Perhaps if you're on psychedelics or have never been to a music show like this then I can see the novelty of them, but they're pretty annoying if you ask me. And people don't realize that when you're on stage and you get hit with one of those things, it actually hurts as those things are coming with strong velocity.
As for the trash, yeah some people are just too lazy to throw their shit away which is a dame shame. But I wouldn't worry too much about about that. I guarantee a cleaning crew was there first thing this morning and the Waterfront is already back to its pristine state. 8-)
Glad you had a good time. I definitely saw your husband.
save the glowsticks for the Widespread Panic shows. (although at bonnaroo they were perfect but ONLY at just the right moment in Gideon)!!
i also heard the beer line set up ridiculous, otherwise, sounds like a great show! i heard the mayor introduced the band?

yeah, its a fucked up logic. the glow sticks are fun, but throwing them AT the band?? Whats the purpose??
maybe i just have a little more respect for them and their music.
and LowDownLuvDawg, seriously... sober up bud. i jammed out harder than most of the high schoolers that were around me, so me being too old "for glow sticks" is ridic. im only 22.

Yeah, you're right.
The slip by Mayor Abramson was kind of apropo though as this was a not only a monumental night for the band but also for the city.
And it's real cool that with the $1 in proceeds from each ticket they were able to donate over 10 thousand dollars to the Louisville Center for Women and Families.

Wow what a wonderful gesture. That just made me and my girlfriend feel good. I think it's very important to help those that are a little less fortunate. If only MORE important people were more gracious.. :) :)
Several things worth noticing:
1.The band is tighter! I've never heard them jam like that on stage before.
2.They really love Fender Twinamps. I saw about 4-5 of them on stage along with some Soldano equipment.
3.Their light show is fucking incredible. I had an intense psychedelic experience when Wordless Chorus hit. Maybe the joints helped that.
4.10,000 people doing drugs worthy of Bonnaroo status. I saw one dude in a jester suit and an accordion. Madness.
5.3-and-a-half hour show. That's Zeppelin status right there.
6.Giant-ass puppets dancing during One Big Holiday
7.People throwing glowsticks high into the air when Jim sang "Oh, this feeling is wonderful" on Touch Me Pt. 2. Beautiful.
Fucking fantastic show, easily the best concert I've ever been to, and I've seen over 30.

Does ANYONE have a recording of this?
I've been to over 100 shows of all kinds and this was the greatest show I've ever been to... except for maybe Jacket at Bonnaroo
was good intentions played at the end of the regular set? trying hard to remember but makers made its mark.
my fourth jacket show...probably the best!!
thanks

Yeah, Jim sampled it right before they left the stage before the encore.
And yes, a recording exists. Samples have been posted, not 10 posts above yours...
After Good Intentions did they all run off the stage?
anyone tape this?

yes, that is my slightly insane significant other.
one guy kept yelling out "chief smackaho, where's your peace pipe?". funny.
awesome show. i was feakin out when i heard the cobra beat start up.
glow sticks were cool i thought. i was collecting them for a while and threw a huge bunch up right when jim started the guitar up in the middle of touch pt 2 and the guy next to me started goin crazy haha. there were some stupid kids tryin to hit jim with them tho, but i kept smackin their hand to mess up their throw.
besides ppl tryin to hit the band, it was a great show. headless abe was the best.
does anyone have a giant pic, like 1280 x 1024 ish, of them on stage with the puppets?
Quotesave the glowsticks for the Widespread Panic shows.
Awww...Penny. Let's not make gross generalizations. When the band and fans are subject to painful air attacks at any moment, I don't think glowsticks are welcome either. If used at the right time to enhance peak experience in the crowd, that's another story.FYI: Panic has a song called 'Big Wooly Mammoth' in which there's a line of lyrics stating, 'someone throw me a fire!' and back in the day the crowd would throw their lighters on stage (glowsticks in recent yrs.). The band would turn their backs, hide behind the percussion set-up or the curtains, etc. and this was a fun part of the show. Unfortunately, kids started using them more and more and would toss them at the band at random moments even when they didn't play this particular song...deeming them ineffective and just fucking rude. WSP started leaving this line of lyrics out and then cut the song out completely after a particular incident where David Schools(bass) was hit in the face. He was quoted as saying, "glowsticks are gay". Anyway, much respect to you on this board penny...I just don't like the connection between idiot fans and their toys and a powerhouse band like Panic. ;) Now you know the bands' stance on this shit as well as a seasoned fan. Not to start an MMJ>glowstick>WSP>Drums>WSP>glowstick>MMJ sick ass sandwich thread or anything. ;D
BTW: LOUISVILLE! LOUISVILLE! :o

after nashville and then louisville, i am having a hard time coming back to the "real world."
we had an amazimg time. the show was insane, and the way they jammed out dondante BLEW MY MIND...
it was cool to chill with forum peeps at bearno's post-show...
more to follow when i get it together...
This is no shit... Right after dondante finished... A guy that had to be pushin' 60-70 turned and asked me (in the middle of the crowd in front of the soundboard), "What was the name of that song?"
"Dondante," I said..
"That was fuckin' unbeleavable... my favorite song of the night," he said... then his wife pulled him out to leave.
Crazy... The encore was all I could have ever asked for... Four concerts prayin' for Steam Engine live and there it was... THANKS FOR A GREAT NIGHT!

I think i know what old guy you were talking about.
it was a great show, i had a great time.
The Louisville show was my first MMJ show. I went with Meg & Brad (my sister and her fiance!), and my face melted wayyy off.
I'm *hoping* to go to the Chicago shows. MMJ + Chicago in October? I can't think of anything better.
I'm Kayla, btw.

yep. yep. yep. :D
i can't wait to read all the comments that trickle in as all of us make our ways home.
it's sunday afternoon. i'm sitting in the indianapolis hairport w/a dbl cappuccino. james brown's "night train" playing...
before the show started i milled around, grabbed some water, took in the setting a bit. only got to visit the louisville leopards booth before the music started. there were also booths there for ko-pilot (rad!), the center for women and families (the recipient of the bands' ticket revenue donation, oh, and cumberland brewery. i did stop there. [smiley=beer.gif]
the louisville leopards were fantastic! imagine an ensemble of 20-30 kids, 2 or 3 to a set of marimbas or vibes (xylophones? not really sure...just very cool) all playing together. that someone arranged these songs for so many people was impressive!
the kids ranged in age from about 8-16. some of them were soooo focused and serious. there were a few who were comfortable enough to swing it though while playing. ;D
there were two ensembles, although some of the players played in both. after each song, the ensemble would leave the stage, and the other would rotate in. there were some kids throwing down off stage when they weren't playing! i do believe i saw some cabbage patching. ;D
which was the song with the big shaker egg breakdown and dance moves in the middle? awesome!
highlights were "late in the evening", "hit the road, jack"--you can never have enough ray charles!, "low rider-->oye como va" w/mmj.
these kids were playing everything FROM MEMORY! in an ORCHESTRA!
just crazy impressive. the conductors would tap or pat their heads to signal something to the kids. they counted off measures by holding their fingers up.
fucking brilliant.
i bought one of their t-shirts. i might just go on tour. [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]
there was also a trio of players that played fiddle, banjo (couldn't see, but sounded like a banjo), guitar and a pennywhistle of some kind. GORGEOUS! they played a bluegrass song and a killer irish reel or jig. talented, talented, talented.
after the leopards finished, as the stage was cleared, the sun got low in the sky. we'd heard that the park had an event curfew so when the band wasn't on the stage right at 8p we were all wondering what was brewing.
the program director from wfpk came out and explained that the crowd had grown to 10,000 and they wanted to get everyone in before starting the show. don't know if that was a safety concern, or just consideration. either way: a-ok.
my friend paul took a pic of the mayor addressing the crowd: he's got his right hand raised up, waving to the crowd. directly in front of him: pooch, with his right paw raised up, waving to the crowd. ;D tremendous!
before the band came out, the crew hung the eye ring scrim behind the stage. after the sun set they had two white spots on the eyes. it looked like two eyes peering out from the dark behind the band. later in the night there were some red spots on them. (the glowing eye backdrop and the giant puppets were enough to make me think, "i'm glad i'm not high." ;D it's hard enough to keep my shit together at a show without throwing something like that into the mix. :o )
the setlist has been posted but here are some notes on moments from the show:
--Anytime--HUGE opener: this is is gonna be BIG!
--OTR--the smoke machine kicked into overdrive here! noticed here that they're using some new lights that have a ring of smaller lights all around the center spot. VERY. COOL. after this song i turned to paul and said, "
this is a rock show."
--Gideon--woo! cameras out of the press pit, carl ditches his jacket...
--Evil Urges--the crowd is LOVING the songs from the new record! so many people singing along all night. sounded fantastic!
--jim dons the cape for...
--Touch Me pt 1--jim was showing some great new cape moves! BIG HOWL!
--Way He Sings--soooo good
--Wonderful Man--the stage was crazy with flying bugs! :o the lights were filled with moths and whatever hangs out down by the river at twilight.
--white lights on the eye backdrop
--I'm Amazed--Huge bass in the mix! great way to dive into this one. Carl!
--Thank You, Too--jim's solo on this was gorgeous! he looked like he was dancing while playing it.
--Sec Walkin'
--HEARTBREAKIN MAN!!--fantastic to hear this!
--Two Halves--there was some low-key, funny tom-carl face making going on here. ;D
--Lay Low--i wrote: big scream-crowd response, but i'm not sure what that means. :-?
--Aluminum Park--CARL!! worth stating right now: carl was just ON FIRE last night. man alive.
during AP...so began the glowstick hail from the crowd...at one point it looked like there was a glowstick fountain out there. people throwing stuff at the stage always makes me nervous, but they seemed to take it in stride. perhaps there is a certain amount of rough-necking that they appreciate (open bar @ the parish show, for example. ;) )
-jim takes a minute to thank louisville "for coming out in full mother fucking force"
--Mahgeeta--carl catching air with a scissor kick (what did i tell you?)
--Phone!! :D MUCH SINGING from crowd!
--jim looks out at the sea of audience and says: wow. wow. wow.
rap about being lucky to "pop out in mf louisville ky."
--Look At You--first time i've seen this one live! lovely! jim solo standing on a stage covered in glow sticks...
--Where To Begin--didn't know this song--Elizabethtown, who knew? thought it was a cover of a country song. gorgeous!
--Golden
--Dondante. Let's just stop right here: SWEET CRACKER SANDWICH. THIS HAS BECOME A MASSIVE VORTEX IN PERFOMANCE! :o :o there was some kind of serious spell casting happening.
started off noticing the lighting: fog! magenta spots backlighting the guys...then it kept shifting subtly and completely. at times the fog was so thick the musicians would disappear...the fog would drift off and reveal them in silhouette. at one time carl and jim were on opposite ends of the stage bent over their guitars playing.
BASS! can't describe this. nope. :o
and those crisp cymbal hits and haunting keys weaving in and around.
it just draws you in and further in...STUNNER!
--Smoking From Shooting--thought we were dealing with one thing, now we're dealing with something else...WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!
-->noise bed-->
--Touch Me Pt. 2--THIS FEELING IT IS WONDERFUL!!--they did the full outro here, with Good Intentions. bo was watching jim closely for the cue to hit the scream. i don't remember them running off stage, at the scream, but they did leave.
--encore--
--Wordless Chorus--...TA-TERS! Jim knee slide through all the glow sticks still on the stage ;D man, i could hear the crowd singing with this one!
--Highly Suspicious--this has come a long way since they played it in houston! GREAT crowd response! HUGE FUN! have i mentioned carl's badassery, yet? christ.
--Cobra!!--fucking a. i love this live! there were a couple of guys next to me who were unfamiliar with the song but didn't miss a beat dancing
--Steam Engine.
cobra --> steam engine. jesus.
BREATHTAKING. just jaw droppingly, head shakingly, heart fillingly gorgeous.
i could hear bo's playing but at one time couldn't see that he was on stage for the fog over there.
--jim rap about the ghosts of your former selves still active where you left them...next time we come to the waterfront to throw a frisbee or whatever we'll all still be here in this night.
--Run Thru--from the first notes tt was laid all the way back, carl was snapping at his guitar, patrick was owning us all. i was so laid out by steam engine that before the jam started i turned to paul and said, "i don't think i'm ready for this."
--Dancefloors!--shake it out!
--OBH--yowyowyow!! all six of the giant puppets came out onto the stage to dance: giraffe, geisha, abe lincoln, crazy mantis-bug, owl w/mirror eyes, giant guy.
seeing carl facing three of these characters while burning it up was a lewis carroll moment! :o :o :D ;D
ok. my plane is boarding. i have to pack it up.
TERRIFIC TO SEE AND MEET SO MANY OF YOU!
between the music, the event, the old friends and new i am blissed out.
what a FANTASTIC WEEKEND!
it was wonderful to be part of the whole thing! [smiley=beer.gif] [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]
I'm 42 years old and I've been seeing live shows on a regular basis since my dad took me to see Jerry Lee Lewis when I was three.I've seen Bob Dylan in three states,Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers rocking a sold out crowd on a hot summer night, and alas My Morning Jacket melting the faces off of 10,000 devoted worshippers.
Never have I experienced a live show even close to the caliber of what I witnessed last night and my body and mind are still numb and somewhat shocked by what I felt, saw, and most of all HEARD!!!!!
I think I've figured out the reason behind this experience you had to feel to understand.I've seen many shows but never before have I been such an intricate part of the show.I've never felt more embraced or touched by a live performance,I've never felt so embraced and loved by a band, and I've never seen five guys become one and then reach out and pull the crowd into a mind boggling soul humping orgy with them and all 10,005 of us combusting for three funfilled hours.
Concert doesn't really fit what we experienced and I'm writing Webster's tomorrow and suggesting they make a new word for what we all felt at the dusty dirty core of our souls.I was thinking "SOULATIO" or possibly "SPIRITLINGUS" because last night if you were within earshot of the magic you got vibrations
in places you didn't know you had.
I guess this post could seem weird and overly passionate to a MMJ virgin but it's actually a pale weak attempt to verbalize something there are no words for.
I thank them all for what they gave us and I only hope we gave them 1/10th of it back.I truly LOVE this band and I don't just mean their songs but I mean them. The greatest singer/writer/performer in history, the greatest example of what you can do with a bass if you really want to,the best drummer since......................oh yeah I almost forgot there is and has NEVER been a better drummer, the best "I can play anything" man doing things with strings that are illegal in 48 states and lastly our beautiful Bo tickling the ivorys and 10,000 people similtaneously without ever moving a muscle. They are rock GODS and they are also the most humble appreciative band I've ever encountered. They are what bands should be but rarely are. They are the epitamy of perfection and thankfully they are sharing time and space with us.I thank them,I respect them, and I fall on the ground on my face when I hear them.Perhaps I've rambled on too long, perhaps I should have chosen two simple words for My Morning Jacket...........
Thank You.Somehow that doesn't seem like enough but what can you really say about something you can't explain and something you've never felt before.Last night they changed my 42 year perception of music and what it is and is not.A grassy field became the foundation of something bigger than the sum of it's parts.Reality as we know it went up in flames and Louisville became an experience instead of a great city.I'm tired but not stoned and I'm sore but not broken.I don't know everything but I do know that on August 16,2008 somewhere on the banks of the Ohio River the five most talented musicians
and their following left something besides empty cups and scattered cigarette butts,I simply don't know what it's called.

OK, now Im awake...sort of...
After knocking back a few drinks at Bearno's near the Waterfront we heard the faint whispers of the sound check wafting over the buildings and into the small outdoor patio. Although it was only 3:30 we agreed that it was time to go get in line. While waiting we met and talked with a nice group of people from Virginia. They told the people in front of them that we were from Philadelphia, so they should probably let us to the front of the line. ;D
Once the gates opened we put into action our previously decided upon plan: GiveToFly gets us posters, I get to the lawn to get the best spot possible. Unfortunately for me they were only selling posters 1 per customer. Thats a good policy though, and Im not too bummed. It was a small price to pay for getting right up front. As I sprinted, in flip flops, down the lawn a security guard told me to stop. I yelled "Im not gonna!". It reminded me of the scene in SuperBad when Jonah Hill kicks the soccer ball at gym. People who werent in the venue yet cheered as people poured across the lawn, jockeying for position. It was exciting lol.
Speaking of that, it took me a good half hour to realize I was 5 feet from the stage. That feeling only intensified once the lawn filled up. I reached up with my camera and took a "blind" pic of the audience ans was shocked to see a sea of humanity. I felt like the luckiest guy on the planet. Not even the TigerBeat teen girl next to me who bragged about having a backstage pass because she had "a cousin whose friends who goes to school with etc etc etc who knew Jim" could bring me down. "I saw him at Ear Xtasy, I touched his arm like, 70 fucking times!". ::)
The Leopard Percussionists were awesome. We were standing right near some of their parents. Nice people. Some of the kids were shy but some were really getting into to. One girl in particular was rocking her little ass off. It was cool to see them get comfortable as their set progressed, to the point where they were really loving the applause. From the looks on their faces the directors were surprised by the response. Guess they werent familiar with Jacket crowds ;D. It was also awesome to see the band on the side of the stage watching the kids. Patrick in particular was really into it, giving high fives and encouragement as each kid exited the stage. Perhaps it is because he has children of his own. I also have to say that I thought it was awesome that the band played with them, but that they didnt overpower them. They were very subtle and didnt steal the stage one bit. Very classy and humble. Is their anything not to love about these guys?
Then the sun started to go down and they took the stage. I was expecting what has become the customary Evil Urges opener, and was floored when Anytime started. It was like a firm, open hand slap in the face. In a good way. I liken it to roller coasters. Some roller coasters start slow by going up the hill and then dumping you. Some roller coasters shoot you like a bullet 500 feet into the air with no warning. This was the 2nd kind. They grabbed the crowd by the balls from the opening bars and didnt let go.
The next 3 and a half hours would prove to be amazing. I figured there would be glow sticks but I wasnt prepared for it to be raining with them. Combined with the music it was absolutely beautiful. During the opening line of Magheeta my new best friend next to me, whose name I never learned, passed me a bottle of whiskey. It was wonderfully appropriate (Sittin' here with me and mine...), and I took a deep pull. All was right in my world.
I was very excited to hear Where to Begin. After seeing War Begun on the Nashville setlist I was sure we'd get something old and/or rare, but that was quite a surprise. Dondante was absolutely amazing, and I think it nearly killed the kid next to me. It was his first MMJ show, and by the time Carl pulled out the sax he had his head in his hands and a catatonic look on his face. Just another happy customer.
The encore was excellent. I finally got to see Cobra live and it didnt disappoint. The finale trio of Run Through/Dancefloors/OBH was a killer. Ive gotten used to them totally killing it with the closer, but it still shakes you to the core every time. After finally getting out of the venue we had to sit and regroup. I was totally fried. It felt like my brain had shattered into a thousand pieces that were bouncing around my skull. The combination of standing/dancing/jamming/jumping, the music, and not having anything to drink left me a little disoriented lol. We had 6 hours to kill before our plane left though, and no hotel room, so we had to regroup and drive on.
That took us to Bearno's on Bardstown, where we refueled and met some of the members. It was great to meet everyone and I look forward to doing it again. Soon it was 3:30 and the place emptied out. Over our last beer LoveDog and I pontificated on the lack of the modern rock star, and how Jim is one of the true few around. It was the perfect end to our time in Louisville.
As we pulled away from the Philadelphia airport my friend commented that 24 hours prior we were just arriving. It made me wonder if the whole thing was a dream. An amazing, kick ass, face melting dream :D
QuoteQuotesave the glowsticks for the Widespread Panic shows.
Unfortunately, kids started using them more and more and would toss them at the band at random moments even when they didn't play this particular song...deeming them ineffective and just fucking rude. i'm not trying to start any kind of war here, not ripping on WSP or any of their fans--just seems more like something that goes w/their shows--every WSP show i've been to, everyone is tripped out throwing glow sticks, using hula hoops, doing magic tricks, doing some kind of animal dances, etc..the last WSP show i've been to, i'm not even sure anyone was there for the music (which is a shame)--i thought the glow sticks were awesome at bonnaroo but annoying at radio city--it wasn't sweeping generalization, but an observation made over the years from going to shows. much RESPEK ali G style.
I was lucky enough to see both the Nashville and Louisville shows this weekend.
Mayhap I'm getting a little long in the tooth, but I found the Louisville crowd to be one of the most disrespectful gathering of people ever. I was about four people from the rail, stage left, and was surrounded by people who continually talked throughout the performance, urinated on the ground, pushed, shoved and couldn't be bothered to pay attention to the music, let alone offer applause or appreciation for a MAGNIFICENT SHOW.
To the jerk (yeah, you in the checkered shirt) who purposely threw a glowstick that hit Jim in the collarbone during "Touch Me...II," then laughed hysterically, why? Ditto to the bonehead standing to my right.

Is this *the* Sassbox? The one I love for posting spunky-to-the-truth wisdom where ever she goes?
As far as glow sticks go--and I know I'm in the minority here--I hate 'em. I want them banned. I hate getting pelted in the back of the head with them while I'm entranced by what's going on on stage. I hate watching band members get pelted with them while they are trying to create the music we all come from afar to see. If you want to hang on to one and wave one around (without whacking someone in the face) fantastic! Go for it! I guess I just have a general dislike for the use of any sort of trajectorial objects at shows.
ya glowsticks are fine when they aren't thrown at the band... as far as the crowd went I didn't really pay attention to them... if they weren't dancing i danced until they danced or got out of my way... during the epic throwdowns i jumped until i reached the point where everyone was jumping... it was //AN EPIC DREAM\\

It's me. You need to go see the pic I posted in that other place. :)
I'm with you on the glowsticks...I find them annoying and I really don't understand the appeal, but I respect that some folks like them. Why anyone would pick one up with the sole intention of hitting someone is beyond me. I'm embarrassed for people who don't know how to conduct themselves in public. BTW, the person who urinated on the ground was a girl. Idiocy knows no sex!
Glow sticks would be fine if idiots didn't handel them... it's a very cool thing to see hundreds of them flying in the air but it's a very disrespectful thing when they are hitting the performers. I saw two-tone get hit and mouth the words "thank you so much".... i'm pretty sure that was scarcastic. Also, I saw alot of people there to get trashed rather than being there for the mind-blowing performance.

It sucks you were surrounded by these idiots but a few feet away we had a completely different experience sharing the night with some new friends who were intelligent appreciative fans there to enjoy the band while not throwing a single object at them.I even noticed wave after wave of thunderous applause and countless rows of fans hypnotized by the magic with their hands in the air giving praise to all things Jacket.Thankfully our spot had no urinating fans male or female and the fans in our area neither threw objects nor taunted the band.
The things you experienced were the result of a few fools who somehow worm their way into every single concert in every single town and calling them "The Louisville Crowd" when there were 10,000 people there is maybe a bit presumptive.I don't know what the Louisville crowd ratio is for idiot vs non idiot but I doubt it's higher than any other city.I saw a couple of people who had one too many which is usually the norm at large musical gatherings but overall I thought The Louisville Crowd did our boys proud.Actually three of those multi talented guys onstage are The Louisville Crowd and I hope you won't let the behavior of a few change your view of Louisville and it's terrific people.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT SHOW.
anyone know how i can get a show poster???
i didnt pick one up last night and i need one.
agreed on the glowsticks.
WHY would anyone want to throw them AT the band??? WTF!?!?!?!!?!

People talked a lot during every big show I have been to (and they were sure talking in Nashville Friday night during the quiet ones, to the point I was thinking why they came in the first place) and people do stupid shit in every city; the bigger the crowd, the more stupid shit. I saw MMJ in Nashville in 2003 in front of like 100 people and some drunk dumb shit stopped the show completely by telling Jim how stupid he looked while he played his acoustic set with as close to silence in a bar as you can get.
I also had a guy spill an entire cup of draft beer on my head at the 2nd Day of Rock and Roll at the Superdome in 1981 during The Eagles playing In The City and then he tried to start a fight with me.
I got more...
I have been to 3 shows in Louisville (MMJ at Headliners/MMJ opening for Wilco at The Palace/Built to Spill at Headliners) and my wife and I always have a great time and are treated wonderfully by the fine people of Louisville. For what it's worth :)
I always keep my eye on Pollstar Louisville just to find an excuse to come back.

Thank You.Somehow that doesn't seem like enough but what can you really say about something you can't explain and something you've never felt before.Last night they changed my 42 year perception of music and what it is and is not.A grassy field became the foundation of something bigger than the sum of it's parts.Reality as we know it went up in flames
I know what you mean (seriously, even the parts I don't understand).
It's unexplainable
After 30+ years of concerts, I'm well aware of the fact that the Idiot Factor exists everywhere. My comment was not meant to malign the city of Louisville or the crowd in its entirety, only those punks surrounding me.
People who don't have the common decency to honor the musicianship they are so privileged to witness should stay the hell home.
QuoteI was lucky enough to see both the Nashville and Louisville shows this weekend.
It has nothing to do with age, its about making assumptions. THere were 10,000 people there, you had contact with
maybe 30 people, and you say "the Louisville crowd". 30 people dont represent an entire crowd, especially one 10,000 strong. I was against the barrier stage left and experienced none of what you're talking about. Sure there was some pushing and jockeying for position, but thats part of every general admission concert at every venue in the country. Its not inherent to Louisville.
I'm not making any assumptions -- I witnessed some bad behavior by what seemed to be an inordinately larger number of individuals than I've seen at concerts past. I do apologize if I've offended anyone from Louisville, but I assumed it was obvious that I didn't feel the other 9,999 people in attendance were all in poor form, only those I seemed to come in to contact with throughout the night. And who even knows if they were from Louisville...I traveled from out-of-state to see the show. Maybe they were New Yorkers! ;) I'm kidding!
i got my "where to begin." that's all that matters to me!!!! what a great fucking show!

It is hard to see the well behaved fans when a bunch of idiots are relieving themselves while hurling objects at the band.It was the moron's fault for hurting the image of the crowd not yours.I'm sorry you had to deal with the poorly raised subhumans. :(

Yeahhhhhhh! Nice, man. Nice.
Me, j_rud, and a friend flew in from Philly for this show that morning. Read his post to get the basic idea of our today.
Somehtings that impressed me were the cleanliness and friendliness of all things Louisville. Great city, and I envy anyone who gets to call it home. This show seemed like a big deal for the city, the mayor showed up!
I was in the front row in front of Carl the entire show... I'll put up my pictures later... need to catch up on some sleep now.
COBRA! :D
So hey, anybody know who the trio were who played between the Leopard Percussionist songs were? Tah.
Also, this was just about the best gig ever. Simple as that.

How do you put this experience into words. Well, man, I just can't!
I've been trying, ChiefOkonoko's been trying. All we could do on the drive back to Chicago is say random things like, "OH, YEAH, How GREAT was it TO HEAR HEART BREAKIN MAN? WHERE TO BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy HELL>>>>DONDANTE!!!>>>the PUPPETS>>>the BEAUTIFUL NIGHT...the bridge as the sun was setting....the MOON! THE CAPE!!. Ok, let's stop talking now --- we'll listen to some Evil Urges, baby!"
Loved the show beyond words. Nice to see some of ya again and to meet some new folks too. Jacketeers = the real deal!
:D :D :D
We were discussing the crowds and the glow sticks over pizza and booze after the Louisville show... All of us are obviously only speaking for a little bubble in a much larger crowd --- but our party of eight felt the atmosphere at Nashville was more aggressive, dare I say violent, compared to the usual MMJ show.
There was crowd surfing, and you could tell the crowd in our little area was irritated by it and just trying to dump the guys onto their heads. Result of that was a couple of folks in my party got hit/kicked/elbowed by accident. There was also an attempt at a moshpit, which thankfully didn't really work. The glowstick lobbing was fun to begin with, but we all know the difference between getting hit on the top or back of the head by a glowstick that was lobbed in the air, versus getting hit by a glowdart that was thrown laterally, purposefully. It looked like Jim, Carl, and Tommy got nailed in the face a couple of times, too. I cringed every time - kept thinking of that picture of David Bowie with a lolipop in his eyeball. I just wanted to be like, "C'mon, dudes... stop trying to hurt people and just enjoy the show."
The atmosphere of the Louisville show was like any other show, I thought - we moved up closer twice, when there was too much chatting, but we eventually found a great little spot (out of range of the glowdarts!)... and that was about all. Apparently the lines were so bad that people felt compelled to piss into the river, but I can't say I blame them.
Both shows were facemelting and orgasmic. After each show we were sort of wandering around like lost children... I'm pretty sure Louisville was better than Nashville - better atmosphere, better crowd, better setlist. I will probably be flip-flopping on this issue for weeks to come, though. I wish I could just stay at those places, forever.
Highlights...
How Do You Know? (We are so lucky to have heard this one live!)
Cobra (Awwweesommeeeeeeeeeee)
Balls to the Walls Run Thru / One Big Holiday / Extra long Dondante / Steam Engine / Highly Suspicious
I guess I could just paste the setlists and that'd speak for itself.

Yeah, it was a big deal for us here in "Luhavul". It's been a long time coming..... it kinda brings everything full circle.

YES. I loved this.
Hey Y'all...
I found some issues with my files as I was uploading the tape to the archive tonight. I'm going to try and get my software figured out tomorrow and try and keep uploading. So, sorry for the delay, I was expecting this to be done tonight. Damn computers...
;D ha!
didnt' have time to mention before:
SOUNDED FANTASTIC!! during the music before the show i was worried that that it would be too loud, or that the bass was too loud, but it wasn't.
we were to the left in front of carl and we could hear all the instruments and vocals clear and beautiful!
great work, sound crew and mixers! [smiley=beer.gif]
also: when they played the songs in the encore tt's bass was crazy-clear in the mix! :o at one point i said, "damn." paul asked, "the bass?" AWE. SOME.
and: THE LIGHTS AT THIS SHOW WERE AMAZING! they have been off the charts for years, but this...this was just art.
damn, but this crew is terrific. [smiley=beer.gif]

You're the 3rd person to recognize the shirt. Its like a lighthouse lol. We walked onto the patio at Bearno's and someone approached us:
"I think I know you"
"Naw, I dont think so".
"Yeah, blue Phillies shirt. You're GiventoFly. Im LoveDog".

The bass was ridiculous. I dont know how far from the stage you were, but from the front you could actually feel it vibrating the organs in your body. It gave you a strong urge to close your eyes lest they burst from their sockets. I wouldnt say it was painful, but it was a very strange sensation.
I don't feel like I got to meet a bunch of folks at Brownings... maybe I was too drunk. I also didn't make it to Bearnos like I planned, we had some family in town and just didn't have the energy after 'Nashville to Kentucky'.
The shows I saw this weekend were INCREDIBLE and I just spent 30 minutes listening to a guy here at my work that ended up at the show try and describe what he saw on Saturday. It was hard to make out what he was saying because his face has been melted and I think he has severe motor skill damage.
I have a shit ton of photographs i need to go through and I'll get them up soon.
QuoteIt was hard to make out what he was saying because his face has been melted and I think he has severe motor skill damage.
This is a good one. Nice!
Yeah, I have to agree on the bass. At one point in Louisville the bass just made a huge, singular thump, and the entire crowd seemed to go "ohhhh shitttt!" in a good way. Very good sound - best sound I've heard from any outdoor event.

I was with photo pass (thanks LP!) and I got to be in the pit for the first 3 songs... The bass was so strong it was hard to breathe when I was in that six foot space of speakers and front row people. AMAZING!
sorry I didn't get to talk with you more Brad but it was good to put a face to a name (even though I've seen yer photo before...)

Yeah, I was pretty sure it was you, but nobody in our little group could confirm it... so everyone had camera phones ready for me to make an idiot out of myself walking up to a stranger going, "Hey, Kory!"

I think in honor of this weekend Dan needs to change his handle from GivenToFly to "BluePhilliesShirt". If it werent for that shirt we wouldnt have met LoveDog, AngryEwok, ms yvon, and others, and that was the perfect ending to our night.
In not so awesome news, Ive just discovered that Hertz, for some reason, took $300 from my bank account for the rental car....gonna have to look into that... :-[
The show was awesome.
One note - me thinks that Mayor Abramson was trying to be witty when he called the band "Our" Morning Jacket. Get it?
I went with my wife, who had seen them with me before at Atlanta's Roxy on the Z tour. We got back to Atlanta yesterday and she went online and bought tickets for the ATL show. I already had tix as she was not interested in seeing them twice...until Saturday that is. She said the Louisville show as the best concert she had ever seen...and we have seen a lot.
what a great weekend. i had a great time in Louisville, such ag reat city. thanks to everybody that gave me recomendations of places to eat and good bars to go to. i had 2 bomb brunches lynn's paradise (Saturday) and Toast on market (sunday). bardstown road was very cool.
the show itself was amazing, the band was so fucking tight. im not the biggest aluminum park fan but holy shit the AP from saturday night rocked so hard. i was loving every minute of Cobra. the entire encore was out of control.
the miami and philly shows can not come fast enough!

I think the best word to describe it is "devastating". I said in another post, when we walked out I felt like my brain had been shattered into a thousand pieces that were bouncing around my skull. Im pretty sure the base contributed to, if not wholly caused, that feeling.

"The second Annual Waterfront Mind Melting" I know I'll show up!Hell I'll even bring a friend or two.
My gf and I had a great time in Louisville, can't wait to go back and spend more time. Unfortunately we got into town later than I wanted due to a late night out in St. Louis on Friday, so by the time we got checked into the Brown (wow) and got some eats it was time to go to the show and I didn't get the chance to meet some of you fine folks at the Browning. We took our chairs so we had to hang back outside the orange box, but we were still close enough to rock out with the great peeps around us. Just a great show even from back a ways - Where to Begin and Cobra were great to hear (I'd love to hear the whole 20 minute version live sometime). They played Cobra at the first show I went to in Dallas in 2004 and I had no idea what I was being treated to! Dondante was totally incredible - seemed like the ghosts were out in full force for that one.
I wish we had thought a little better about after the show because we thought we would be able to eat late at Makers on 4th St. on the way back to the hotel but no go - and we walked right past Bearno's on the way! :P Thanks Louisville and MMJ for a great weekend, and now I'm getting geeked for Red Rocks!
BEST DONDANTE EVER... BRAIN ALTERING SOLO, I felt like I liquified and my body became one with the water table. Brian's tape translates this feeling to me once again.

There was a kid next to me and GivenToFly who was at his first Jacket show. During Dondante he just put his head in his hands and had this amazing blank stare lol. He was catatonic.

the way they are playing it now it's as if the music is grabbing you by the lapels and pulling you in and in and into the song.

Just got home after almost exactly 1300 miles. Worth every last one of them, obviously. Nothing left to say about the show that hasn't already been touched on. I'd probably get emotional if i tried. I am a little heartbroken (literally) that it is over, but it is something I'll have with me for the rest of my life. City of Louisvlle, sweet jesus, you are beautiful. Everything about you. It is now obvious where MMJ gets their eclectic and diverse catalog from. My wife and I had a minor emergency before the show and got to Brownings really late. But we did get to meet Dylan, TEO, and Lovedog. Fine, fine people. Sorry I didnt meet more of you. (Thanks for the bracelet, Matt.) I thought about cabbing it over to Bearnos afterwards. But were just physically and emotionally spent. My wife enjoys their music, but not like most of us here do. She was just as moved as everyone there. Now i'm starting to ramble. Utterly amazing.

In a lot of the pictures Ive seen as well as some Ive took, when the silkscreens are obscured by smoke and lights as they are in the second to last pic you posted, they look like giant, disembodied eyes floating over the band and watching the crowd. I love it...

yeah look like there was one done for a promoter...and the other one Im not so sure about...I wonder if it was even produced. Mine was the official poster done for the band for sale at the show.

QuoteQuoteMe, j_rud, and a friend flew in from Philly for this show that morning.
COBRA! :D
Wasn't you wearing the Blue Phillies shirt by any chance was it?
haha that was me... how'd you know?! ;D
I guess that's my concert t-shirt now.

You need to change your screenname to "Blue Phillies Shirt" lol

It has moved from a concert to an experience.......

I almost feel like the ones that aren't signed and numbered will be more rare...
well...the problem with that is that I bet there were about 500 unsinged posters and 40 that were, meaning that the 40 are more rare. This is how some artists make their versions more collectable.

You're nuts. Let's see, a run of 40 signed and numbered vs. 1000's of unsigned and unnumbered?? 40 POSTERS ::). I've got one of the 40 and I know three other people with part of the 40.
it was somewhat of a joke... there were not 1000's printed though. When I got to the show I bet there was a stack of 100.
Big deal, you got a MMJ poster that you'd be silly to sell anyway.
I will say that it's retarded that they cost more now...
ummm. who signed the 40? i thought it would be from the screenprinter...its the band? no way...
i'm sure it's the screenprinter.
no matter, the ville poster is still a gorgeous design...........
I bought the very first poster sold at the show.
8-)
I still haven't picked up a Louisville poster, but I did manage to get my hands on the super-rare Hatch Show Print... This thing is freakin' sexy.

i think we bought the last 3! the ear x-tacy booth was just getting torn down.
nice!

How'd you manage to get ahold of one of those?
while on the subject of posters... i never got around to getting one from the last show at the lville garden... i guess it was thanksgiving eve '06??? anyone know if there still exists a chance of finding one of those?

go over to kopilot.net and shoot them an email. I know they were selling them for 3 bucks locally and 5 online + shipping but I haven't been in there in a few months...

Short answer: I spoke with the printer... they typically have a couple of posters laying around that were held for various reasons - damages, printer proofs, etc. I was willing to take a poster that was lesser quality, but it just so happens the only one they had was one they had forgotten was taped to their window. So... I've got one of the very few ones that
isn't signed by the band, and it's in perfect condition (I don't see where it was taped). It'll look great framed to my Ryman poster, which is signed by the band.
8-)
I don't have any wall space left. I don't know if I should pick up the Louisville for $40 if I know I won't display it. I still have my Bonnaroo '05, '06, and MMJ themed '08 posters in the roll.
:-/
I need to build a room for MMJ memorabilia.
Man this is a long thread and I'm late to the party...
...Are there any Louisville posters left anywhere? I'd love to have one for my new apartment!

appreciate the heads up. thanks, kory.
I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but if not, I think it might be a good idea.
If there is anybody on here who is awesome at art/printing shit/etc, you should make your own posters and sell them to us on here for a more modest price than $40-$80+. I don't care about a poster being "official" or any of that shit, in fact if somebody on here made a cool poster, it would be more personal and I would probably like it more. I would love more MMJ posters, but don't have enough money to pay those prices. Maybe somebody on here is already doing this, I don't know, but I would def. pay money for someone's art on here, and knowing that it came from a true fan like me, that would make it even better.

That may be fine with you, but I'd bet that the band (record label, mangement, etc.) would not wanting people making illegal merch and selling without their consent.
Plus, who says that the ones making the art aren't true fans anyways? I have been listening (and making posters) for these guys for many years. I love and respect their music as much or more than anyone on here. So to make a statement like that seems a little misguided.
Some more pics - I took a ton and so many were shite! But here ya are anyway.

i love the giant eye looking out in this one:

before the waterfront show i ordered some stickers that i'd planned to pass out at the concert.
they say: RAMPANT BADASSERY on them. they've finally arrived and they are pretty rad! if you want one, just send me a self-addressed stamped envelope. the sticker will fit in a letter sized envelope (the ones that are about 9 x 3 in.--i don't have a ruler on me. )
to get my address, PM me.
i've got 100 of these stickers and will pass them out after the upcoming shows (portland, seattle, los angeles) until they are gone. for the love of pete, please don't put the stickers on anything at the venues.
**THE STICKERS HAVE NO MMJ LOGOS OR TEXT ON THEM, AND ARE NOT CONNECTED TO THE BAND AT ALL--this is strictly the descriptive line i'm giving this tour. every tour, really, but let's not quibble.** [smiley=beer.gif]
*sticker bump*
