For those of you who are hitting this show...make sure you drop by the Starr Hill Brewery and enjoy a Dark Starr Stout. Lucky bastards.  ;)
I miss Charlottesville.

maybe in cville...

also a buddy of mine says he's taping...

I couldn't convince a friend to go. Either they didn't know MMJ, didn't want to spend $40 bucks, or they had other plans. So I'm going alone. It kind of sucks, but when MMJ hits the stage it won't matter. I'll just make friends with whoever is around me.

First off, I think that tonight was the best Phone Went West I ever heard. I met some cool people at the show. I'm sorry if I don't remember your names. I was the guy in the Chris Cooley jersey. MMJ put on an incredible show. I Think I'm Going To Hell, Evelyn Is Not Real, and Dondante were a few of my other highlights. To top the night off, while I was waiting for a friend to pick me up, while sitting in front of the Charlottesville Police Station, I got to briefly meet Tom from the band.

I just wanted to give you some customer input.  Take it with a grain of salt.  You should make the preview larger.  Have a deal where you could click on it one more time and blow it up just a hair bigger so people could see some detail.  Suck em in!

At first I thought the chant was stupid, but then a bunch of people got into it and it was kind of funny because I started to think about how random it was. Then I just said what the fuck and joined in.

that setlist is out of order.  "Master Plan" was way closer to the beginning.

also, in the encore, there were six songs.  "Smokin' From Shootin'" led into "Touch Me I'm Going To Scream, Pt. 2."

sorry about flubbing the precise order of the list and missing anytime. i guess things tend to get a little hazy at the end of such a spectacular night...funny sidenote: a guy next to me was 4 sheets to the wind and started fucking with me for writing down the set. cuz he didn't have a clue what i was doing (may've been his first show as far as i know) he started leaning over and saying "dear diary..." whenever i'd write something down. b/c he knew he was getting on my nerves, he said once "dear diary, why did i come here tonight? these people around me are being jerks." even though he was a fuckcheese, i still have to give him credit for being funny

I can confirm the set list in order. I was luck enough to get a copy from the stage after the show.

Evil Urges -
Touch Me Pt 1
Off The Record
Aluminum Park
Way He Sings
Thank You Too
IM Amazed
Evelyn
Masterplan
Walkin
Golden

It was a great show, great crowd, great venue, the band seemed to like the night, they were up for a good night.  At one point a guy scaled the stage and tried to get the set list at Jim's feet, sory to say he failed !!
Title: Re: Charlottesville Pavilion
Post by: slimsloslider on Sep 05, 2008, 02:03 PM
the setup for the charlottesville pavilion is great. its not one of your typical cookie-cutter amphitheaters. i never had been to charlottesville before, but when i got out and parked my car around 4:15, all i had to do was follow the sound of patrick's drum kit. the theater is at the end of an outdoor walking mall in the historic district and the stage is directed towards the shops and restaurants. you could hear their soundcheck for at least a half a mile down as it echoed and reverberated off the buildings. i took it as a good sign. i walked up and bought my ticket as they were setting up the venue and the band broke in to "heartbreakin' man" and followed with "i'm amazed." i met emmet who had been at the dc show (great story about bo hunting down patrick for that last autograph, btw). i've seen the band perform 20 times now, but it was the first time i'd ever seen them do a sound check and i gotta say it was a little eerie watching them go through the motions without any showmanship. i understand that they save their energy for the show, but it sort've reminded me of those creepy mechanical puppets they have at chuck e. cheese.
anyway, i went and grabbed a bite to eat, then got back to the venue when gates opened at 6 and got a spot 6 feet from jim's mic. it took a while for the place to fill up, but fill up it did, just in time for the band to go on at about a quarter past 7. the ga floor was hot and sticky, but there were a shitload of die hard fans there. i saw a couple dynamite wilco tshirts (one summerteeth and another from the weeklong riv gigs they did in the winter). the energy was fantastic, nothing like the show the night before at DAR. limbs were flying. i got doused with airborne beer. there was shakin' and some record playin and all the leather kids were LOOOOUUUUUDDD!! you could tell the boys were really digging it too. jim made more than his share of gestures to the crowd in appreciation. he even thanked us at the end for being as rowdy as we were. i'm hoping the philly show'll have the same level of intensity.
Title: Re: Charlottesville Pavilion
Post by: jdubs on Sep 05, 2008, 03:29 PM
that was a great show, i was about 10 feet from the stage.  the only bad thing i can say about it was...leave it to Charlottesville to turn a MMJ show into a frat party.  Sorostitute central.

cbd-  unfortunately Starr Hill closed a few months ago.  The brewery and the music hall, sad huh?  I'll miss the mojo beer the most.
The new venue is on the corner, I forget what it's called.
Also, thanks for the torrent up from Charlottesville, couldn't make it to my fave city for the show but will listen to it as soon as it's ready!

Title: Re: Charlottesville Pavilion
Post by: slimkim on Sep 05, 2008, 04:41 PM
it was a typical GREAT show from the band...

i believe they played for about 2.5 hours. I ended with a super nice buzzz by the end of the night. so i think it was 2.5 hours, not less though.

nothing bad to say about the show and why would you? great music nice venue good folks around. there was a lot of space around. if you didn't want to be upfront, there was plenty of seating by the soundboard that gave the best sound.

my highlights were phone went west ( i don't think this normally happens, but he sang the song sans guitar. i don't know if there was a problem with it, but i don't recall that he sings phone without the guitar)

think i'm going to hell was great as well. so much passion. so much.

mageetah was awesome as well. energy song.

enjoy philly all...

slim i am

there are torrents for 3 different sources so not sure which one you are on but mine (4022s) should be going fine by the looks of it.

peter king just got it on the archive for me as well:

feh9bc: did you mean me? I knew star hill closed and in fact the new place has since closed as well: Satellite Ballroom lost their lease to a damned CVS drug store. They are working on a new place on the mall The Jefferson Ballroom but its probably close to a year away
