Holy shit, how amazing was THAT?!?!? Philly became the 2nd city to get impromptu fireworks as they lit up the sky over the Ben Franklin Bridge at the crescendo of Touch Me Part II. Evelyn Is Not Real featured a 30 second pose-off where the guys resembled mannequins. So many amazing moments. The crowd was awesome and the guys really fed off it.
Will write a more detailed post when I come off this adrenaline, I need to go take a deep breath. Those who were at the show, check in with your stories, we got an AMAZING one tonight :D
Evelyn pose-off with Jim breaking his pose to laugh before finishing
cobra->smokin'
war fucking begun
the monster that don dante has grown into
the fireworks with flaspots matching the end of touch me part II (i swear they did)
the misty rain that at times came down hard but mostly just soaked our souls (the weather control continues, Jim also gave a weather forecast of high humidity with a chance of ghosts, don't remember the exact line)
pooch's lady friend (i dunno if this is new or not, but it was cute as all hell, she even willingly held jim's cape after he threw it off for the lay low solo and the roadie put it on her arm)
so many highlights...i'll get back to you tomorrow after i hunt down the pieces of missing flesh and when the ringing in my ears subsides...8th time i've seen the boys, and it gets better everytime
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
It was my first jacket show and my face was completly melted. I'm still shaking and the show ended over an hour ago. I got front row and i got a guitar pick. Oh and i'm pretty sure i met you j rud, you were the guy in the white button shirt right?
And where were the fireworks? I have to say i didnt see 'em

Yup, that was me. Who were you? Sorry, I met a bunch of people tonight. It was like a reunion. Found myself on the rail next to a couple I met at Radio City. The people behind us were behind us in Louisville. All in all a crazy night!
I was the kid in the obama shirt. we were talking in line and you gave me and my friends a ton of glowsticks (which is much appreciated by the way)
j-rud can't wait to hear your story.
Nice to have meet you at DAR Wednesday
Listened to the show on the radio, sounded like a great night
WOW what a show gentlemen. Hey Willplaysgeetar im pretty sure i was right behind you in the front row ahaha, i had on a Blue North Carolina Tar Heel Hoodie nice to see you here n there... thanks for the glow sticks ;D
Anyway that show was freekin amazing, as you can see i cant fall asleep. If i had to choose 3 favorite tracks, Cobra, Phone Went West , and Mageetah but anysong they play is amazing. Jim can really rock that cape and the view of philly and the bridge was spectacular.
What were some of everybodys favorite selections of the night?! lol
Been more of a lurker on these forums but my son Richard and I were there tonight, right in front of Jim in front of the stage so I had to post. Richard is 16 and just getting into live shows while I'm way too old and seen many gigs. Last time I saw a band play for 2 hours without a break and then come on to do a 7 set 30 minute encore was when the Dead were in their heyday. No doubt MMJ work hard for their living unlike so many musical artists. Can't wait to hear the soundboard from WXPN's broadcast.
BTW, Sassbox looks great in her pirate outfit.
Absolutely worth the 2 hour drive from Jersey for this one...
What a great show! The band was having a great time on stage as usual. Great venue and great crowd...Lots of singing along.
See some of ya on NYE!
Wow what an amazing show. The guys were in the zone tonight.
Highlights:
- Jim with a big smile on his face on the intro riff of Off the Record. How epic was that song?
- Dondante. Holy shit. I loved how they broke down into an almsot metal groove on that song. Sax was ridiculous.
- The War Begun end jam was absolutely nuts
- Gideon
- The rain picking up during the encore. The weather was freakin perfect and Jim and the boys illuminated in the light with the rain coming down during Touch Me Part 2 was epic.
And many more. There were just too many highlights to list. Just an all-around great show with some nice oldies included. The crowd was great and the lights were amazing as usual. One guy I went with never heard them before and had low expectations and got rocked. He thought it was amazing. That's how good these guys are.
Oh man. Hey, I was right behind you two guys with the glowsticks. Buzzed head, big beard, and a purple shit. Right next to my boy, axround.
What an unbelievable show. My ears are still ringing. Dondante? Laylow? Touch Me Pt. 2? One Big Holiday?
Damn. My second time seeing the boys, and I can't wait to make it 3. Floor seats at MSG on NYE. Oh yes.
And if Noel is on here, it's Jeremy. Gimme a holler. ;)
QuoteBuzzed head, big beard, and a purple shit.
A Jacket show can do strange things to people for sure...
I'm hungover this morning and didn't drink last night. I think that sums up my experience pretty well.
The show was better than D.C. in my opinion. It was one of the best shows I've been to. I was pumped to get "War Begun," "Evelyn is Not Real," and "Cobra" on the same set. "Phone Went West" was excellent as well. It was a long drive back to Damascus though. With the rain, it took about 2hrs and 25mins. However, more than worth it.
QuoteI was the kid in the obama shirt. we were talking in line and you gave me and my friends a ton of glowsticks (which is much appreciated by the way)
alright man! I met you too, I helped ya over the guardrail after you grabbed those picks,
that concert was out of control! unbelievable!
only bummer was some of the fans around me, the one kid i think was going to die and his friend refused to take him in the back and this group just talked the entire friggin time. next time I think i'll try to get front row because I started second row and wound up being pushed back to the 5 or so
Easily the best show of the summer for me (obviously not including the epic roo set). My body is still destroyed from last night. The crowd was amazing which to me makes or breaks the show. Everybody was dancing, it was like one big party. Finally got my war begun and let me say it was well worth the wait, almost teared up during it. War begun, phone went west was just pure insanity. The dondante jam was out of this world. Cobra was just the icing on the cake.
Thank you MMJ for an incredible summer, see you on NYE!!!
HUGE REVIEW AHEAD, unedited so there might be some rambling or run-ons :P
First off, let it be known that this band in fact has the power to control rain, it was supposed to start raining in the middle of the night last night and the mere presence of this band brought it early and it hasn't started raining yet today because of those few early Jacket clouds got ahead of the rest of the storm...I believe in Jacket rain....you all should could to know it's power. Now let's get into this
So they start off with Anytime, Aluminum Park, Off the Record and Evil Urges and set the effing tone...they came to Philly to do business. Sidenote, Before the show I noticed the MMJ mascot Pooch has a new lady friend (who I would like everyone to refer to as Poochette), the couple is adorable and I hope they get to some lovin and can bring us some lil pooches in the future.
Then comes Touch Me part 1 and everyone falls into the groove, some people might still be feeling it out, but the connection with the band is met and we all sink back into Jim's familiar Philly beanbag chair. This connection is strengthened by the raucous WAWM and two halves, then comes Golden...
The song is unstoppably gorgeous and that's when EVERYONE is locked in and become one in this artist/listener relationship.
I'm amazed kicks off the second half of the set followed by evelyn...fucking evelyn...words can't express how happy I was to hear an old favorite like. It crawled into my ears like never before and it grabbed my soul and held me there in that moment, much like the moment the boys held their positions in silence for something like 30 seconds while the crowd freaked out. Finally Jim couldn't contain himself and cracked a smile and led them out in the last note of the song (and this wasn't even the best part of the concert). Sec Walkin got me thinking they were gonna start mixing things up with old and new...and so they did...with WAR BEGUN.
Tom started laying down the bass groove on his own and I started jumping and screaming amidst an at the time quiet crowd... (I was two people from the front just a step to the right of Jim, so If you saw me, you know I was a blur the whole show). I'm pretty sure Jimmy and the boys felt my excitement as only the bass was playing and I was flipping. That solo is etched in my eardrums forever...thank you My Morning Jacket.
After another amazing performance of Phone Went West followed by Librarian, they whipped out a fucking monster version of Dondante. Around the time of Roo and RCMH they started adding that droning riff to the end solo and I couldn't help but think everytime I see this band live, that song grows longer and more complex than the version before it. Last night blew all expectations of growth out of the fucking universe. That middle section before Jim's usual high-pitched two note riff before the sax was pure insanity. I knew those boys had it in them to really break ground with a song like this.
Gideon, Lay low (with cape holding assistance by Poochette) and the best version of Mahgeetah, my first mmj song, I've ever seen closed out the set.
Wordless Chorus is a perfect encore opener and then the boys just funked it all up. Highly Suspicious is a beast all on it's own with it's fun as hell to sing along to lyrics and insanely thick solo but to follow it with Cobra...dear lord. Come to think of it, follow it with Cobra->Smokin->touch me pt II->Run Thru.....HOLY MOTHER OF GOD.
Those fireworks started going of and subsequently finished within one song (that being pt. 2) and I swear those flashpots at the end matched up with the omnichord at the end of the song. All in all though it had to be a coincidence because there was a moment where jim looked up at the 'works as if to say "o fucking aaaaaweeeesooome."
The instant after the scream let out at the end of part 2 the stage literally exploded with the force of a fucking nuke, death and destruction all around me with only My Morning Jacket left standing and Jim James pleading "oh shit run." Dear god this song (and what was to follow) just shakes me...my physical state evaporated into the sweat spit and noise of the air and I was a rocking machine with my brethren in Jacket.
Then One Big Holiday.
Through most show reviews on this board I've noticed that no one really talks about this song as often as they should be. I think it's almost an unwritten rule that you don't talk about OBH because you simply can't describe it. I will say this though. I literally shake while I see/hear this song and after because I can't contain whatever it is/was that was coming out of me...that's all I can say. I finish with this:
Through most of my life, I'm usually a subdued, off-handedly sarcastic and otherwise laid back person. However, when I witness this band live something comes out of me that turns me into this fluid, rocking animal and my heart flutters and a familiar ice runs through my veins and my body reacts to the cold and I become flushed and chilled all at once. The 8 times I've seen them, I've release the most energy I've ever exuded at anytime. This band moves people, every living being who is there, even the drunk and stoned assholes at some point all channel through this funnel these five men create and all of us become one in a fixed celebration of happiness.
:)

Amen. Thank you
quick review from me, longer review later.
pros:
war begun, evelyn, phone, cobra - awesome.
sister - was her first show and it's always great being with somebody when they see the jacket for the first time. i think she was impressed
songs being reworked - it was really nice to see how many songs had been reworked, just between rcmh and now. to my recollection, thank you too!, dondante, phone went west, and a few others had all been changed around a bit. love to see the band trying new things
my location - somehow, we managed to plop ourselves second row, directly in front of carl. usually i go for jim's side, but this was a treat. since i've seen mmj a bunch, i really just tried to focus on carl and tommy last night. carl is a great musician with a lot of energy and i enjoyed being up close for his solos all night. three cheers for broemel.
weather - held out until the end there when we got a much needed shower
cons:
crowd - i actually didn't think the crowd was that great, at least where i was standing (2nd row, directly in front of carl). the band is definitely more popular these days, and this is no reflection on the band, but popularity brings some, well, less savory folks out to shows. for example: people talking about baseball all night and not listening to the music, meatheads drinking too much and almost fighting during evelyn, girls who insist on screaming because they don't know the lyrics, screaming so loud that it hurts the ears even with plugs in. it's a concert, i understand, but it's still a complaint.
glow sticks - maybe they look cool, but which assholes keep chucking them at the band all night. lame lame lame
predictability - it comes with seeing the band so many times, but i'm still waiting for the day when i can go to a jacket show and really not know what's coming. they definitely have the catalogue, just open it up a little. yes, this is severely nit-picky, but when you see a ton of shows, it just gets that way. i generally know which songs to expect in the first half, which to expect in the second half and which to expect in the encore. i know the crowds love laylow and dondante and obh, and so do i, but how bout making some new tunes crowd pleasers, like O is the One, Strangulation, Dancefloors and changing up those openers and closers. *they have made a little progress here lately*
acoustic jacket - where have you gone? what really got me into this band years ago was the country/acoustic/folk of Tenn. Fire and At Dawn. i would love to see the acoustic guitar come out more during these recent shows, but my feeling is that the band knows how much acoustic songs tend to kill energy with larger crowds. who wouldn't have loved to hear butch cassidy, by my car, needed it most, where to begin, i will be there, old sept blues, or something like that last night.
i know my cons are nitpicks, but it was a great show and i will continue to see mmj whenever they come near. my final thought is that i was incredibly close, which was great, but it just didn't match rcmh for me, which says a lot because i was sitting near the back at rcmh.
see you next time
for example: people talking about baseball all night and not listening to the music, meatheads drinking too much and almost fighting during evelyn,
Yeah my husband & I were in front of these kids screaming "play something old" and when Evelyn came on, they didn't budge. Not to say you have to be crazy but really if your screaming Free Bird know when to back it up!! At RCMH, people were talking about shoes, KY show people talking about Pizza. You just can't stop it- I guess its what you get when MMJ play festival venues.
I was the chick next to your sister, hope she had a killer show.
Hoping for Berlin see you @ NYE
I agree with October & C-bear, at the show on thursday there were two girls that made their way up front just to say they got up front and all they did was "talk", drove me nuts, at one point I turned around to them & said "girls I came to listen to them not you, please can you be quiet" they left.
There is nothing worse than having someone shouting on your ear, talking about work, talking about other problems in their live when they can do that another time.
I hate it
Quote for example: people talking about baseball all night and not listening to the music, meatheads drinking too much and almost fighting during evelyn,

were you with your husband who had the yankees hat on?? i should have said hi, but i'm always weirded about asking people in person if they belong to a message board by chance.
my sister was laughing because she said you both noticed carl's wedding band. she loves carl.
i think she had a real good time. she's doesn't really go to see live music much and we're really different people, but somehow, i guess because i listen to so much jacket, she got into the band and asked me if we could go see them together. it's great because she really likes TN Fire stuff and At Dawn stuff. she got a kick out of war begun.
i still need to get tickets for NYE, but i'll definitely be there.
I have absolutely no problem shushing people during shows now...the need to talk over the music is pandemic and I'm not having it. I'm very polite, and I've received quite a few dirty looks, but I won't allow people to disrespect me OR the band by yammering on ad nauseam.
As far as glowsticks, don't bring 'em. You may be well intentioned, but your glowstick might just end up in the hands of someone who isn't. Seeing the band being pelted is disappointing and embarrassing.
This was my sixth show in two weeks and I have to say the crowd was pretty well behaved, the band's energy was insane and it was a wonderful night.
doEVIL does great reviews. thank you!!

Hey willplaysguitar, how are ya bud. I was the lad behind you and your friends/siblings(?) in line and right behind ya'll at the show, with my girlfriend. You guys were wicked cool and definitely the most pleasant to be around. There were so many annoying douchers in our area, like the large group who wouldn't shut the f*ck up through the entire show, and then towards the end that little rat-looking idiot who kept trying to push his way up front, and who had to be shoved and lectured by myself and like 10 other people who were fed up with him. MightyPirate I'm sure that's the same group you were talking about; we probably saw each other there. I was bearded with glasses and my girlfriend had long dark curly-ish hair. Anywho, j-rud it was also cool to meet you.
So besides the annoying people in the crowd, the show was just beautiful. Karl especially was on fire I think. Phone Went West, Mahgeetah, Law Low, Dondante of course, Touch Me Pt. 2, were some of the highlights. Shit, there were so many, I'd list almost all the songs if I really thought about it. I'm sad now though and wish I could see them again tonight and the next night.... I'm sure this will become availabe since it was broadcast on xpn, right??
October I must have been right near you as well. We were just to the right of Karl and in the 2nd row, so I'm sure we were bothered by the same annoying folks.
o no! i almost forgot at the end of one big holiday Jim was at the edge of the stage leaning over the crowd and he was playing the main riff and mimicing the guitar along with his mouth
WADALOW WADALOW WADALOW WADALOW...
WADALOW WADALOW WADALOW WADALOW...
WADALOW WADALOW WADALOW WADALOW...
In that moment I could only imagine little 12-year-old Jimmy Olliges sitting in his room playing air guitar hoping some day to tour the world and visit exotic cities like... Philadelphia... ;)
Slept 11 hours last night, recovering from two shows in the past 3 days. Finally have the clarity to put last nights events into coherent thoughts...
First of all, this was a great show for meeting people, both new and from previous shows. I talked to willplaysguitar in line and after the show and didn't know it until this morning. A girl behind me in line mentioned that she wasn't going to the show but holding a place in line for her brother. I thought this sounded familiar from the boards and sure enough met jarrod when he arrived. Tristis was right behind me, as was Sassbox. Next to me was a couple I talked with at Radio City, as well as a group of people we shared the rail with at Louisville. It was fitting that at my last Jacket show of the summer I ran into some of the people I met along the way. It really set the tone for the evening. You could feel the electricity in the crowd. These people came to have a good time, and as the lights dimmed and Birds Lament came over the PA, I knew we were in for a good one.
As the band took the stage I said to my friend "this feels like an Anytime opener", and sure enough there was Bo, igniting the crowd and starting the show. I love Anytime as the opener. I liken it to roller coaster; Evil Urges as the opener is like a traditional roller coaster that takes you up the hill, anticipation building, then sends you over the edge with some great solos. Anytime as the opener is like one of these new roller coasters that shoots up the hill at 100 MPH and doesn't stop until the ride is over...3 hours later.
As the band got settled in and started to hit on the new album (Aluminum Park, Evil Urges, Touch Me Pt 1), I realized just how much the new songs have grown over the tour. Radio City was a wonderful experience, one of my favorite shows ever, but you could tell that much of the setlist was new and hadn't really been road tested. That is definitely not the case now. The jams during Aluminum Park and Evil Urges sounded better than ever, and Jim's cape routine during Touch Me (and the other caped numbers) has taken on a life of its own. Its almost like an alter ego at this point, and it drives the crowd fucking wild. Im pretty sure I saw my wife swoon as Jim lept out on the speaker stack, cape wrapped around his face, peering over it at us in the first row. I didn't even mind because Im pretty sure I was swooning too. The guy just oozes charisma.
The first half of the set was rounded out by Golden, Two Halves, and Im Amazed. Carl was immaculate on the pedal steel during Golden. I think he's incredibly underrated as a musician. Two Halves and Im Amazed really hammered home my earlier thoughts about the new songs evolving.
Then came the 2nd half of the set, and IMO, where this show just kind of elevated itself. This is where it took off. I waited all summer to hear Evelyn and it did not disappoint. Jim and Carl were absolutely blistering, and the end featured a pose-off that lasted 30 seconds. If I had to guess they went into it asking themselves "How long could we do that...and what would the crowd do?" The answers to those questions are "About 30 seconds until Jim laughs" and "cheer...get slightly confused and quiet...then cheer even louder". Just another in a long line of lovable quirks as far as Im concerned. War Begun (2nd time in 3 days!) was great again, as was Phone.
It was obvious that we were in the middle of a great one when Patrick started laying the bass drum for Dondante. I looked at Dan but didn't say anything. The message was obvious: this was going to be epic. I don't really know how to describe what then happened. Superfluous superlatives simply wouldn't do it justice. All I can say is that it was the best version of that song that I had ever seen. Gideon, Lay Low, and Magheeta closed the set. Surrounded by my wife, sister in law, and 2 of my best friends, "sittin' here with me and mine" never sounded more true.
Wordless Chorus was the encore opener, of course, and was a crowd favorite as always. Highly Suspicious has also become a crowd pleaser, with its equal parts of grooving and shredding. After Cobra and Smokin' I knew we'd be closing it out with Touch Me Pt II, Run Thru, and OBH, but that didn't take away from it one bit.
Touch Me II was absolutely incredible. It had started to rain, a slight drizzle, as the tech brought Jim the omnichord. Like every song this one was really on point, but then something happened that I will never forget. As the song steadily built to its climax the rain came down harder. Then people behind me started to scream. I turned to my side to see fireworks exploding over the Ben Franklin Bridge. It was incredible and, judging by the look on Jims face, a complete surprise. He stared wide-eyed for a moment before turning to Patrick as if saying "Can you believe this?". It seemed to energize the band and the ripped through end of the song. They closed with Run Thru and OBH, and we all know how that goes. I will say that Jim is so fun to watch when he solos. He was in total command of the crowd, especially during OBH. Standing a foot away from Jim as he leaned over the crowd ripping through the end of that song, sweat actually dripping from THE GUITAR, can be described in one word: cathartic.
Overall it was an amazing night. I don't know where I would put it with the rest of the shows this summer. Im resisting the urge to rank them and just appreciate them all for what they each were. It was incredible though.
One final note for the cover fanatics: the band soundchecked The Lemon Song. Yes, THAT Lemon song. Possible hint for New Years Eve?????
This was such an amazing experience. It was my first MMJ show (which I waited for about 6 hours at the gate) and I don't know what could've made it better. I was the Asian kid with the bandanna and the red tank top RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE where Jim James was ejaculating pure soul and happiness with smiles and winks. The set was perfect.
In the end, I was tired, starved, beaten, three-quarters deaf, wobbly, stinky, physically shitty in general. But I couldn't have felt happier.
I was at the show last nite as well and introduced the band to my girlfriend. I'm from Philly and saw them at the electric factory when they came by two years ago. Since then, I just came back from Denver where i saw them at Red Rocks! Fucken REligious! I saw Jim play with the moon as it rose over Denver and into the constellations behind me. It was the ultimate show, fuck the Who at Leeds, this was the best live show ever! I witnessed history, A nite I will not forget!
Last night's show was amazing. Evelyn, War Begun, a little tune from Chocolate and Ice, which is what I was hoping for, I thought The Bear would be next. I flipped my lid. Im heading to Chi town for the 9th and 10th show and will see you guys on the floor of MSG on New Year's. I've been a fan for years and every time I see them the vibe grows more and more!! Now I know what all those old guys felt like when they saw the greats of zepplin and jimi when they were in their hayday. We're fucken watching the greatest band ever evolve and bring rock to its knees!!!
I had to change my pants after Phone Went West last night. Best show ever and if it wasn't for the rain I would be in Boston right now. Hope to see ya'll on NYE.

One final note for the cover fanatics: the band soundchecked The Lemon Song. Yes, THAT Lemon song. Possible hint for New Years Eve?????
Hell. Yes.
QuoteQuoteQuoteI was the kid in the obama shirt. we were talking in line and you gave me and my friends a ton of glowsticks (which is much appreciated by the way)
alright man! I met you too, I helped ya over the guardrail after you grabbed those picks,
that concert was out of control! unbelievable!
only bummer was some of the fans around me, the one kid i think was going to die and his friend refused to take him in the back and this group just talked the entire friggin time. next time I think i'll try to get front row because I started second row and wound up being pushed back to the 5 or so
Hey willplaysguitar, how are ya bud.
Shit, there were so many, I'd like almost all the songs if I really thought about it. I'm sad now though and wish I could see them again tonight and the next night.... I'm sure this will become availabe since it was broadcast on xpn, right??
Were you the guy who i asked what song it was after phone went west? And the kids with me were siblings, and I'm their friend. And that guy pushing his way up front was annoying as hell, i wanted to sock him.
I was standing right there too and my son gave that POS a heavy elbow. Noticed he settled down a bit. Considering my son is a 5th degree master black belt at Kenpo karate I'm sure he's feeling it today.

gotcha. yeah that was me.
I can't say much more about my first MMJ gig that hasn't been said already, but yeah Cobra, Phone Went West, and Evelyn were awesome.
Loved seeing some peeps from the boards about 20' back too.
I could say more, but I'm in the midst of an endorphin crash or something. Is that common after an MMJ show? I don't even want to go out tonight. :'(

yeah i often feel that way after a really good concert. I think the reason is that you have such a euphoric feeling for (in this case) about 2 hrs 45 minutes, then you're left to dwell on it; and while the memories are priceless, they can never compare to the feeling of experiencing it, and you just wanna go and do it all over again. Wish I could tonight. I am rather melancholy today.

Have to say I felt the same way too this morning, luckily i got EU vinyl at the concert, and when i put that on, I felt alot better.
i'm from philly and attended the philly show. missed the first half of anytime, but almost broke my fucking neck rockin' out to the rest of the set. i was blown away by war begun, a song that i've never heard done live and definitely deserves the balls-out treatment.
jim cracked me the fuck up with the cape during wordless chorus. i got childishly giddy and amused whenever he did his dracula bit before the chorus.
the rain was epic for the encore. yes, mmj does control the weather. i am not surprised. two-tone tommy KILLLLLLED it during smokin' from shootin', among other numbers. carl also was a ton of fun to watch dance. they all look like they're having a blast.
i don't understand how you couldn't like the song highly suspicious. and last night converted a lot of unfaithfuls, i'm sure. it was skull-bustingly heavy.
i was with my two lady friends and some dickhead kept grabbing their asses. he had short brown hair and a mustache. i was right up at the front in the dead center, about fifteen feet from the stage. wanted to pop him one in the mouth, but didn't wanna get thrown out.
also, some guy kept telling me what songs were coming next. don't know, don't care. good for you, you've seen them a bunch. he was a cool guy, just wouldn't stop blowing the setlist for me.
i'm only complaining because i'm not really sure how to put into words how much i needed this show. i will be checking back for the stream on monday.
all in all, thank god for a show like that. mmj killlllled it.
J_rud...great pics, thanks for sharing! What kind of camera are you using? Settings?
finally one more thing...the day before the show, my local paper printed a full page story on the boys front page of the entertainment section....only thing is the main picture.....wasn't them at all. so there's an entire half page in my local paper devoted to a picture of my favorite band and it's not even them...and the next day THERE WAS NO CORRECTION!!! unfortunately i didn't get to see it till the next day and it would be too late for a correction
QuoteJ_rud...great pics, thanks for sharing! What kind of camera are you using? Settings?
Would you believe me if I told you it was just a standard Kodak Mega Pixel 8.0? I have an "oldie but goodie" Canon AE1 Series but didnt feel like lugging it along. Those are from a pretty run of the mill digital camera. I really like the 3 of Jim with the V where the yellow light is coming across his body. I'd like to say I did something special, but it was pretty much a point and click job.
Yes, I'd believe you. My brother, a professional photographer, has gotten some amazing shots with DISPOSABLES. I can't lug my D80 everywhere, so I rely on this POS Lumix I got a few months ago. I despise that little hunk of nothingness. It's terribly inconsistent.
Great shots, thanks again for posting!
while we're on photos, i found these posted on another messageboard.

Longtime lurker here. I felt compelled to post after having seen the Philly show.
The show was AMAZING!!! Jim & the boys were ON TOP OF THEIR GAME. Possibly the best show I've EVER seen.
But my reason for posting is this:
While the crowd was, for the most part, OUTSTANDING, there was a segment of the audience that wouldn't stop jabbering. Many people were talking during THE ENTIRE show. It was EXTREMELY annoying & utterly disrespectful to the band & the fans who came to enjoy the concert.
That aside, MMJ ROCKED the Earth that night!
But I'm betting that I speak for everyone on this board when I say this to those of you who go to ANY show knowing that you're unable to hold your chattering 'till the show is OVER:
STAY HOME!!!
Defintely one of the best shows I have seen in a long time. The band were awesome. I totally agree with the complaints about people talking throughout the show. I had to move 3 times because of it. I wanna hear the band not some asshole going on about his fucking sex life!!!
I'm suprised nobody was let down by the first few songs. Carl was definately having problems as he had someone working on his sh$t during Anytime, Aluminum Park and Off the Record. I wasn't feeling the energy at first, and I was scared the band was falling into some kind of road weariness. I didn't really think the show was going to go well until Evil Urges, and then all hell broke loose. Don Dante was the best I ever saw, holy hell! They definately jammed it up and played some different songs which was sweet. Maybe the reason I didn;t feel the first couple of songs had to do with Carl's equipment problems or the fact that the last show I saw was RCMH which set the bar extremely high. Nonetheless the show was outstanding and I can't wait to see them again. I hope no one flips out on my remarks, just one man's opinion.

nice meeting you and the mrs before the show!!
i keep forgetting things....
i was singing the COBRAAAAAAs in the verses of cobra and everyone around me was like uhhhh whaT? then jim did it before the "chorus" and i just know he heard me doing it earlier...maybe it was all in my head...but we had a moment
here's a big thing i want to put out there too...during the quiet breakdown at the end of off the record i wanna hear the boys break out a subdued chorus of the doobie brothers "jesus is just alright"...it matches up...feel it
Back from Philly and after quickly reading through all of these posts, there isn't anything that I can add...but I'll try anyway ;)
'Twas a great night. I thought that of the MIA>DC>PHL run, the band just seemed really energized in Philly. I did notice that Carl was having some equipment issues at the start, but he was rockin' so hard it didn't seem to matter. I love Carl. Is that OK? He's just friggin' amazing.
I got to the venue late and was maybe 30 "rows" back on Jim's side. I was dancing and bouncing right away...felt real good to hear Aluminum Park again. And from that point on, I think I was off in my own little MMJ Extravaganza. :D
Were it not for all the people trudging through to get beer all night and the 2 guys who decided to stand right in front of me to talk and look at porn on their iPhones, it would have been as if the band were playing just for me.
I still do not know what the fireworks were for across the river, but I was told that Celine Dion was playing. Did anyone else see the 2 girls hop on stage and get accidentally tackled as they were being removed from the stage? Nuts...
Sadly, the group that I was with were part of the talking crowd. We were basically in the same row, but since we all got there a bit late, I stayed on the fringe and they moved into the crowd. Apparently, they got shushed and knew that it was deserved.
Ah well...from the Radio City show to Miami to DC to Philly, I have just been having an absolute blast.
Can't wait for Seattle!

well if that's true, thank you celine...it was literally just for one song...and it was amazing, and yeah the one girl was dancing about and the other was trying to sing side by side with Jim, E street band style during... OBH or run thru? they got housed by security, but it added to the insanity at the end of that show
Quotenice meeting you and the mrs before the show!!
and you too!!
When the war begun, the best, do they play that often? The best show I've seen. Went to bonnaroo, but past out in the middle of MMJ's set. Glad to actual see there show. MSG NYE, still tickets, thinkin its going to be good? Great fans!
Hey Guys...
Took a few photos at the show.
Enjoy!

Atlanta was better.
Ha! Of the six I saw, I'd rank as follows:
1. Nashville (I got to meet the band)
2. Philly (performance, crowd)
3. Red Rocks (venue)
4. Dallas (Erykah Badu appearance)
5. Louisville (hometown show!)
6. DC
Edit: Yeah, Roo, SXSW and the Jim James' solo at St. Davids...gah, nine times in six months. Nuts.
my rankings for the 5 shows i saw this summer:
1) Roo
2) Philly
3) Louisville
4) Radio City
5) Miami Beach

Fleabag, it was nice meeting you. I was the guy with the McNerd jersey on. That was a great first show to be at! Highlights for me were Evelyn and Cobra (first time seeing them performed live). I loved that 30 second pose after Evelyn! I started yelling different names at Jim and we were very close to the stage. In the spirit of the SNL "Making Copies" skit and Rob Schneider I began yelling "Jimmy, Jimbo, the Jimster, the Jimarino ect.... until I got to "the JimJamster" at which point he broke his freeze and cracked a smile. I think he heard me? LOL ;D ;D ;D

don't forget about the CAPE we were passing around! many people enjoyed that.
i'm saving my review and thoughts of this show for an epic post about my summer with MMJ.
I will say that this philly show was a greaet way to end it. A reunion of sorts, meeting and being recognized by people from Louisville and Radio City, and seeing a guy I talked to at a Wilco show in August.

That's cool! The one in Manhattan? Sorry about the Phillies :'(
well, i've waited a few days to think about it over and over, but i still feel pretty disappointed with the show in philly. i've been seeing these guys since '05, and this was the first time i've walked away disappointed.
they just seemed tired, and perhaps a little uninspired. jim particularly, seemed to be spent, and that is very UNDERSTANDABLE.
i realize what these guys put into each and every show, and after the run they had been on, it's very understandable.
the west coast is in for a nice treat, as they are getting some well deserved rest and surely will come out on fire again.
cheers boys, keep at it, and keep enjoying it....because i plan to do the same!!
i will forever be thankful for the bonnaroo and rcmh shows this year.

i am confused- were we at the same show? You have been going to many more shows than myself (only saw 2) but I feel like they showed just as much energy as RCMH and i feel even more so because I was much closer at philly than RC. To each his own I suppose. Either way, I'm very sorry you were disappointed :-/

just my opinion, and yes i have seen many shows. the way jim flew around rcmh, up and down the side rafters can not be matched...hell he didn't even make it to carl's side of the stage in philly.
but as i said, it's understandable, completely. and you certainly don't have to be sorry...it happens. you can't put on the best show ever every night...although these guys have done it the most of pretty much any other band i've seen.
mustaches are way cool.
im going to have to agree to disagree lasvegas, i thought the philly show was much better then radio city. maybe they were more tired in philly and understandbly so. but i thought they were just more on in philly, just nailing songs. i don't really go to shows to see jim run around on stage, i go for the music and to me philly was hands down better musically then radio city. i think playing the evil urges material live for a couple of months also played a big role in why i thought philly was so much better.
i'll say it again, its just my opinion...an opinioned based on seeing these guys over and over.
i don't go to shows to see jj run around either, but in my experience, the shows in which he does this, are the most raging fun, intense shows.
late night bonnaroo '06, roseland ballroom nyc '06, late night bonnaroo this year - all bubbling over with energy. philly just wasn't.
yeah its great to hear them really nail a bunch of new songs, but give me 3 or 4 old ragers that arent perfect, over that anyday.
it's nothing against the band like i keep saying, and it wasn't only jj, it's just he is the one who is the most visible. hell everyone looked beat up there in philly. even patrick...i know i was shocked too.
for me:
music + energy = live shows
and yes the music was tight, but the energy was not there.
i thought the philly crowd was more into it than the boston crowd

i understand where you are coming from, I was hoping JJ came over towards Carls side (thats where we were, right in front of Carl- he flashed some smiles too) You can't beat JJ running up the side of RCMH- that was just magical, but I loved how he was standing on that box in the front of the stage leaning over the crowd- giving everyone big smiles and getting them all involved in the experience- I think that while they may have been tired- that tired performance beats any other show I have been to. And that, is just fucking awesome.
Quotei thought the philly crowd was more into it than the boston crowd
Yeah, I thought the Philly crowd was really into it too! Everyone around us was dancing and singing!!! Totally just feeding off the energy MMJ was giving. It was only my 5th MMJ show but I thought the energy was high. Maybe because I was so close to the stage!!! :D :D
i seldom post here but have seen MMJ many many times. this summer i was at bonnaroo, followed just days later at Radio City front row right in front of JJ, and philly.
there are no words to describe this band. none.
i am so thankful they are around.
suppose it is my turn to add my story to the mix. my buddy has a buddy who has a place in philly, we thought it was closer to the venue than it actually is. cabbed in and went to dave and busters first because i have never been to one. i intended on getting over to the river deck before the show to meet some of you but that never happened. i kept winning that light game where you have to hit the button and stop the light between the 2 neon things. my friend and i won it so much we had tickets bursting out of our pockets. so we decided to turn in the tickets for some pint glasses and then head to the show. damn we are stupid, no glass allowed. so we hid the glasses under the blue fence, never expecting to see them again. so now we go inside the gates, im expecting the crowd to already be big and i was gonna be happy with maybe being 15 rows back. but to my surprise i got 2nd or 3rd row right in front of jim's mic. im pretty sure i saw some of you but never actually made contact. youare_giventofly was right up front i think, and i saw sassbox the patched one, i think that was you at least. but i never got close enough to chat. still good to at least SEE you guys haha. anyways the dude in front of me was named pete and he had a VIP ticket and hooked us up with free beer. thanks pete, you are the man. his friends were cool too. the show was awesome, i had never been that close to them on stage, it was totally awesome. i wont waste my time describing the show, it was amazing, that is all. when it ended we stood there hoping for a pic or list or something, we got nothing but thats cool. on the way we went to the fence and reached under. holy f! our glasses were still there. yay. now its pouring and my friend promised to meet his buddy in town, so we went to south street. sorry jerseydan and all those who went to silk city, i could not make it. after a short stay it was time to figure out how to get back to our car, which was parked in the middle of a road somewhere on braod street. i guess the 2hr time limit does not apply to cars parked in the middle of the road. you cant do that where im from but o well haha. we finally got a cab, the driver was blasting techno, good for him. got in car, drove car home, passed out and slept for a long time.
i had so much fun, wish i couldve met more of you guys. i sang along with you though. i'll see you at mmjnyemsg.
in an unrelated note, i attended the nascar race in richmond on sunday and struck up a convo with some gal from that area. she was cool, i mentioned i was from upstate ny and she told me with a straight face that she 'didnt like yankees.' haha, o well, i liked her! i also ate at a waffle house for the first time in my life. and it was good.
i left a few parts out, including the pee cig, cause im afraid that one of you might be the unfortunate victim of this completely accidental, hilarious happening. (if your cig tasted/smelled like pee, im sorry)

But yes I did meet Jim and the boys, Wednesday after the DC show.

;D
hey, philly peeps!
before the waterfront show i ordered some stickers that i'd planned to pass out at the concert. in lieu of pm-img each of you that i met, thought i'd throw a blanket post in here. this way anyone who might want one the stickers can get one. :D
they say: RAMPANT BADASSERY on them. they've finally arrived and they are pretty rad! if you want one, just send me a self-addressed stamped envelope. the sticker will fit in a letter sized envelope (4 x 9 in)
to get my address, PM me.
i've got 100 of these stickers and will pass them out after the upcoming shows (portland, seattle, los angeles) until they are gone. for the love of pete, please don't put the stickers on anything at the venues.
**THE STICKERS HAVE NO MMJ LOGOS OR TEXT ON THEM, AND ARE NOT CONNECTED TO THE BAND AT ALL--this is strictly the descriptive line i'm giving this tour. every tour, really, but let's not quibble.** [smiley=beer.gif]

Did you talk to Jim? I would absolutely love to meet those guys some day, they all seem so friggin cool!
It was a Kermit/Jim's voice joke... hence the picture of Kermit with a banjo.
But yes I did meet Jim and the boys, Wednesday after the DC show.
alas, i am out of the loop- what's a pirate to do?
when did the female bear first make an appearance?
it wasn't at red rocks but it was at the dc show. maybe when they came back east?
Yes, it was at the DC show.
I think Philly was the first time she stuck around for the whole show though...

i only ask because in Dallas didn't Badu give him a kiss? Maybe he thought he needed a lady friend after that
Finally got a good copy of this show and my son and I just spent 2.5 hours listening with headphones and even though it was a ghost of the real thing it was great. Hearing all the people around us at the front of the stage that we met cheering customized it and made it special. j rud I recognized your shout after Dondante. Too bad that's when all the inebriated youths moved in to make it tough at the stage front.

Just messing around around. The Flyers are actually very good. And I think it is awesome a few of them went to the MMJ show. But seriously, team that really sucks balls are the Philly's. Sorry, it's true. ;)
