Title: Glowsticks on this tour? Columbus?
Post by: Bengals24 on Oct 05, 2008, 03:15 PM
I saw MMJ for the first time this summer and Bonnaroo and was amazed. Columbus will be my second show and I cannot wait. I was wondering if there have been a lot of glowstick wars throughout the tour? If so, the Columbus show is at an outdoor venue, so hopefully it will continue.

throwing glowsticks at concerts is like doing the wave during sporting events.

they say, "you aren't providing enough entertainment, so i'll manufacture my own."

unnecessary, rude, and dangerous.

If I see anyone poised to throw a glowstick from anywhere around me, they will be fishing said glowstick from their nether-regions for the next week.

Glow stick are fun - so is dancing hella hard and talking to your friends during the show.

When did MMJ fans become so....lame....I mean shit, I would never spend my hard earned money on glow sticks - but they sure are fun to look at being paraded through the air during the climax of Gideon.     Actually it's not MMJ fans who are lame, it's just forum fans who think they're more entitled to the band because they own At Dawn/TTF Demo's that are lame.  If someone wants to throw a glowstick - let the fucker have a good time and throw a glowstick.  Maybe thats just how we roll West Coast! Berkeley! Werd!

I was so surprised to see people actually throw stuff on stage at the Detroit concert, which included throwing glow sticks.  I usually don't see people throw things at shows.

There's always two schools of thought on live music--those against glow sticks and those for them. Honestly, the first time I saw a glow stick war, I thought it was amazing. Now I realize that, particularly in clubs, they just don't make sense.

Clearly you've never been whacked in the face with a glow stick while you were, as you say "dancing hella hard," or watched a band member get one right in the hand or head. It's not cool. At all.

At festivals, when people are outdoors and throwing rings up in the air (and not at a stage), they don't seem to bother too many people. Indoors, in smaller venues, I think they're more trouble than fun.

I'm all about dancing hard at a show. I'd like to dance my arse off without having to worry about getting a projectile in my eye.

Different strokes, but seriously, if you HAVE to throw something, throw a ring.  And please don't throw anything at the stage.

i dig glow sticks at outdoor venues... especially at the climax of Gideon... i find it very visually pleasing...i think its lame to throw it at the band however...i mean even if you don't like glowsticks at shows how can u say you will be disappointed when the full on glowstick war erupts upon Gideon New Year's at the Garden :D

Having glowsticks bounce off the hands, legs and faces of the people playing music on stage is lame. Period. Now matter how much joy you derive from watching the pretty colors, they always end up hitting the people on stage at some point. In fact, some people aim for the people playing on stage. You know, hey, there's a guy on stage playing a guitar, I think I will throw something at him? That.

If you can focus long enough; put down your cameras and cell phones, not have to be "entertained" even more by flying, pretty colors, then the music is enough; it really is. But, you have to pay attention.

the music is enough (no, really, it is)

QuoteNO glowsticks
Please refrain from the throwing of glowsticks, as they are dangerous and can cause serious injuries. And frankly, they're so '97.
If anyone can tell me where the above quote is from, I will pay you a thousand Schrute bucks.

You guys are a bunch of babies.  Glowsticks or no glowsticks you are still gonna have a good time.  I don't like the fact that I had to stand next to a smelly fat guy at the last MMJ show I went to but I still stayed in my element and had a good time.  If people want to throw glowsticks let them throw glow sticks without having to deal with all you whiny bastards.  If you don't like them then don't throw them.  The 30 year old mother with her kids at the show don't like the fact that you are smoking pot next to her and her children but does she say anything about it or get on here and cry about it?  No!  So loosen up.

as long as i live, whenever someone mentions glowsticks, i will always think about the dumbasses next to us at the nashville show who cut their glowsticks open and rubbed the stuff inside all over their skin.

pretty sure that shit is toxic, but... whatever, right? looking cool is so much more important than, you know, not getting poisoned.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that when Tommy mouthed the words "Thank You" after being pelleted in the face with glowsticks he was being sarcastic.   But maybe he just needs a talking-to from you about "loosening up".

At the risk of sounding like an old fart, glowsticks are really, really dumb.

I hate the argument, "well let me throw one at you".  That has nothing to do with anything and you just sound like a stuck up asshole when you say it.  People don't bring glow sticks to shows to hurt people with them, they bring them because they're fun and look cool.  Same reason people don't bring  cigs to show's to give people second hand smoke - they bring them because they enjoy smoking them.  Everybody sings a different tune - some people sit and watch shows, some people dance really hard - some people throw glow sticks and some people watch Patrick's every move.  Let people have their fun....

I agree, sometimes a glow stick is going to hit the band, and that's not cool...but shit, that's the risk you take being in a "psy-rock" band.

I don't like goin down front at shows to much anymore.  I have been hit by full water bottles, plastic beer bottles, glow sticks and a partridge in a pair tree.  All it takes is one reckless drunk a-hole to start the orgy of throwin shit and the melee begins, not my bag of apples.   Getting hit by anything is a distraction from having a good time at a show IMO.

i agree, being hit with shit isn't that fun.  But you could either bitch about it and have it ruin your show or you could just go about having a good time.

I do see your point though and this is why many people stay clear of big shows and wait for smaller more intimate venues.

I think you're missing the point of my "let me throw one at you" comment.  It was in response to the post before mine--the same one you quoted. You say the argument has nothing to do with it, but I beg to differ:
If you happen to get one of those bitches in the face as you're doing your own thing--watching the show for instance--it's stings like a goddamn bee sting. The majority of times I've been hit with one, no, it didn't hurt, but when one hits you just right, it makes you forget about the show for a little bit and focus on the stinging, throbbing feeling coming from your cheek.

Once a glow stick leaves your hand, it's pretty much out of your control. You may have the intention of watching the pretty colors as it flies through the air, but the simple fact is--an object in motion stays in motion until acted upon by an outside force--that force can be someone watching the stick who is then able to catch it, or an unsuspecting person's hand, or eye, or head.

I COMPLETELY agree with your statement that people should enjoy themselves at shows. However, most of your examples; dancing, watching Patrick, sitting--don't affect anyone else. Throwing glow sticks *does* affect other people--even the band.

We are both essentially saying the same thing--don't put limitations on what people should be allowed to do to have fun at a show. However, I think we still have a responsibility to be respectful of other people at the show. Unlike smoking or dancing, you can't avoid getting hit by a glow stick by moving to a different spot in the venue--if it's raining glow sticks, you're likely to get hit where ever you stand. You can, however, move away from smokers or people who are dancing.

Please don't call me a "stuck up asshole" because I am looking out for myself, others, and the band.

I wouldn't want to get hit in the face with one while pouring my soul into a guitar solo.  Especially when Jim has said he tries to lose himself at shows and any reminder of the real world is a bad thing.

Throwing glowsticks everywhere? I just knew dumb teenagers would invent something else to wreck concerts, now that moshing has apparently run it's course.

Seriously...people...YOU are not the show. Those guys up there, who've practiced hard for 10 years to be worthy of your attention? The guys we all paid cash money to see? They're the show! Not you and your 20-cent piece of glowing plastic, which you then throw much like a monkey flinging it's poo, cause it's looks cool when you're high. Not you. Them. My Morning Jacket.

Getting hit in the head at a show sucks. It pulls me out of the connection with the band. It makes me hate people (stupid, tripping, inconsiderate people) more than I already do. It creates bad vibes. And do you really want the karmic bad vibes associated with messing up someone's MMJ show?

I don't think you do.

Tell it to the two jerks I saw who picked up glowsticks and deliberately threw them directly at the band (one hitting Jim in the neck, the other hitting Tommy in the arm).  I don't see the fun in attempting to hurt someone, and I'm pretty sure I'm not going out on a limb saying the band doesn't enjoy being pelted with those things in the name of someone else's "fun".
