Title: Chicago- Who's Flying In?...We Are! =)
Post by: gundy on Oct 08, 2008, 06:03 PM
Get well soon Jim. You have all our love, support, and best wishes for a full recovery.

With that said, the missus and I will still be flying in from Sun-the-Eggo tomorrow so we might as well take in the sights and see what Chicago is all about. We'll still go by the theater both nights to see if anything magical will happen and share our MMJ stories with fellow MMJ fans if we happen to run into anyone...

Unfortunately we will not be able to come back a second time for any rescheduled Chicago dates. Especially how the economy is goin' we'll live vicariously through those at this great forum.

Hoping that Chicago would get close to the 3-day blowout in San Francisco@the Fillmore. The missus and I agree that those shows were hands-down the best 3 nights of MMJ that we've been fortunate enough to attend.

Travel safely for all who are still going out to Chicago and we'll see you there!

Gundy and the missus

Gundy, the weather is going to be great so I know it'll make it a lot better. One of Chicago's secrets (I don't know how secret) is Garrett's Popcorn. If you have an hour to wait in line (it's that good) then head to 26 West Randolph, Chicago, IL 60601 or 4 East Madison, Chicago, IL 60602 and you will soon be in heaven! Their website is garrettpopcorn.com

And of course try to go to Grant Park where you can see the famous fountain from Married With Children...but it's a nice park anyway.  ;)

Have fun!

We have tickets on Southwest, and they give full credit. I am waiting for my wife to get to my apartment to share the bad news and make the decision.

Thanks for the heads-up. We'll make sure to try some phenomenal popcorn and since we have the time, waiting to some MMJ tunes will make the time pass quickly.

Hope that the canceled concert doesn't get too many people down but it is what it is and MMJ will live to play another day. Or in this case, dates...

Everyone take care and see you at the next show! Hopefully.

Gundy and the missus.

Take an architectural boat cruise.  Not only will you see a lot of the city, you'll learn a lot of interesting history.

You could grab lunch in the same building this boat is docked at the Fox & Obel Cafe (awesome food).  It's also the nicest grocery store in town if you want to put together a fancy picnic to take to Millenium Park.

The weather this weekend is phenomenal.

If you like jazz, you should consider hitting the Green Mill one night (open til 5am).  It's beyond historic and has great music going virtually all of the time.

The city is going to be busy with the marathon in town, so make reservations and buy tix ahead of time when you can.

If you like art, do the Art Institute over the MCA (IMHO).

Have fun.

You speak truth!  The NYE Fillmore run was the stuff that legends are made of.  It was the insanity of NYE that has pushed us to come out east to NYC for NYE this year.

add another ringing endorsement of the architectural boat tour!  you also get a different perspective on of the bldgs built along the river.

the art institute is well worth the trip.  so stunning to see some familiar paintings in person.

the green mill is a hoot!

other chicago high points:

--the hideout:  http://www.hideoutchicago.com/  wonderful place!
--laurie's planet of sound record store at lincoln square--great stuff, neat people

--hot doug's sausage shop--on fridays they could their french fries in duck fat.  they taste like pancakes.  soooo good.  (took 2 buses and the el to get there, i don't even remember what neighborhood it's in)

--metropolis coffee--near the lake off the granville red line stop
--intelligentsia coffee, which is two doors down from
--reckless records

enjoy chicago!  i do love it!

Oh, man, the architectural boat cruise is awesome! I forgot I did that a few years ago. Well worth it!!

Fox & Obel is a great place to wander too. Lots of goodies in that grocery store.

Of course there is always Dick's Last Resort for a killer breakfast buffet. It is close to Fox & Obel too. Last time I was there, they had the best Beatles cover band playing (The Cavern Beat).

Ms. Yvon always has the info! Next time I am in Chicago, I want to head to Laurie's Planet of Sound. I think I have already added up enough dollars in my head to spend on my next adventure to Chi-Town!

If you're still planning to travel to Chicago this weekend and want to get your rock on, there are tickets available for Broken Social Scene (10/9) and Stereolab (10/10).

This thread has such a good vibe. I love the positive attitudes on this forum. Honestly, I smiled reading the good outlook on the unfortunate circumstances.

I wish the two of you the best. Have fun in one of my favorite places in the country.

Well...shit.  If I were to see any two bands other than MMJ, BSS and Stereolab would probably be it.

PS: if you've never seen BSS live, your in for a real treat!

Thank you all for the great support. We've arrived in Chicago late so we're now going out to some late-night eats over at Miller's Pub. Hope to run into some fans in the city when we go get our shop-on and sightseeing tomorrow. If not, then we'll soak up all of what Chicago has to offer.

You all out there are great MMJ fans. There's nowhere else where people are so genuine especially when meeting at the concerts for the first time since we are all connected through such great music.

Best,
Gundy and the missus

Jacketheads are the best. I hope you have a blast in Chi-City! Lots of fun stuff to do there. With the awesome outlook on life you seem to have, I can't imagine you not having a great time! After all, it was in the Chi that I first stumbled upon the wondrous James Gang :)

If you're still in town Sunday night, Fleet Foxes are at Metro.  It's sold out, but you may be able to buy tickets off someone with extras outside the venue.

My husband and I flew in from northern California on Tuesday night.  Got the news about Jim's fall later that night at dinner. Serious bummer about the shows (we had tix for the show at Schubas and both nights at the Chicago Theater) but our immediate concerns were about Jim's health.

We had a great few days in Chicago but it sure was anticlimactic.  We had been so looking forward to those shows and it just a shock that our run with MMJ this tour ended so abruptly.  We hope to come back when the shows are rescheduled but until those dates are announced we just don't know if it's doable.

To my hubby (I know you read my posts) are you sure we can go to the NYE show?   ::)
