I'll be there and first show at the venue.  Wife and I are going to make a weekend of it.  Is anyone else doing the "pass the line" option.  Any advance advice on how to get the best spot will be much appreciated.

From what I recall from seeing QR a few year's back..Very nice venue..the Floor is standing room only..and will be packed, of course.  There's a balcony up on the top on both sides of the stage, with some seated areas right along the railing, that were reserved/VIP seats only.  We tried a couple of times to sneak in when no one was around but kept getting kicked out.  Security monitors that area pretty heavily, fyi.  Great sound too.

We ate dinner at the venue last night.A very unique place with great atmosphere.I couldn't get access to where the band will be playing but our waiter told me some things about it and it is definitely indoors and it holds about 2000 people.

Also, for those of you that want to get good seats, you can purchase "Crash the Gate" tickets for 10 bucks each that will allow you to cut in front of the line before everybody(even the dinner receipts) and lets you in early.

I took quite a few pics of the place and I will put em up when I get back home.

Also, the food and drinks are great but kinda expensive. But so is everything down here.

Keep in mind that my folks live there so I stay with them when I visit but from what I hear the Sand Castle on South Ocean Blvd is the nicest and cheapest place to stay. It's about 15 minutes from the HOB.

I JUST WANT TO SEE MY MORNING JACKET!!! i'm going to the show.  i'm a local of the area, and thanks to the stupid house of blues, that's the only venue in myrtle beach where you can see any decent shows- and not so decent shows.  house of blues, like any other craphead of a corporation, tries to wring all the change out of your pockets.  drinks and food are expensive, and they force you to go through tickemaster now- which is a bunch of shit!!!  what the hell is a "building usage fee"?  and the "convenience fee" is ridiculous for being forced to order tickets online.  then of course you have the "processing fee".  so i got two tickets to the show which should have been a total of about $60, but after all the BS fees you have to pay, it ended up being over $80!!  what a bunch of crap!  I JUST WANT TO SEE MY MORNING JACKET!!  guys- i beg you to NEVER use the House of Blues or any venue that forces you to go through ticketmaster!  your show back in 2006 at The Plex in Charleston, SC didn't force me to go through ticketmaster.  i repeat I JUST WANT TO SEE MY MORNING JACKET!!!!!! and cause i want to see y'all so badly, i paid the damn fees!  and WILL ALWAYS pay the fees to see y'all.  ok, now i get off my soap box to sell my arm and leg for gas money to get to the show....

Clarkwork,

Not that you're probably looking for this long of a drive after a show, but about 50 minutes north is Wilmington, NC.  My wife and I lived there for 3 years in the mid-90's.  It's got a great downtown that sits right on the Cape Fear River with lots of great food and drink.  just 15 minutes east of downtown is the beautiful sand of Wrightsville Beach, NC.
Like I said, it's not right next door, but if you would like any more info, just let me know.  If you're curious, you could stay one night in Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach area and then the night of the show stay a little closer to the venue.

Yeah,I hear you....the place will definitely drain your pockets, especially if you eat there. But given the price of other bands tickets, the 80 bucks is still pretty cheap to see your favorite band.Heck I even shelled out 20 bucks more for the crash the gate tickets to get in early. That's cheaper than eating there the day of the show to get in early.

thanks jellyfish.  you must be a natural optimistic.  i don't eat there either.  my friend got food poisoning from the last show we went to see together at the myrtle beach house of blues.  i've just had to see way too many shows there.  it's the only venue around the upper east coast of south carolina that brings in people i wanna see.  they've sorta got a geographical monopoly going on.  so not cool.  MUSIC SHOULD BE FREE! but my morning jacket's gotta eat, so i don't mind paying THEM for there awesome music, just not people take advantage of others!  so on an optimistic note....only 81 days to the August 31st show with My Morning Jacket!!!!!!!!!!

I actually had my bachelor party in Wilmington and have been there several times.  Love that place.  It would be great to visit there again, but we wanted somewhere close so we can really enjoy the show and walk back if needed.  Thanks for the info though and for bringing back the great memories of Wilmington.

Also, Jellyfish, thanks for the link to the hotel.  We actually found a nice place right near the HOB.  We're going without our 3 and 1 year old so just a simple room is all that will be needed :)

Also, can someone tell me more about the crash the gates?  We reserved a spot to have dinner there.  Yes I know it will be expensive but we never get to go out that much.  Is there another place that is nice to eat and just buy the gatecrasher or should we just eat there and get those seats?

When we were being seated for dinner the greeter told me about the crash the gates. She told me that buying these tickets would get you in even before the dinner receipt peeps. There only 10 bucks each and all you have to do is show up at 6PM and present them with your GM tickets.I purchased them at the box office which just happened to be open till 6PM,we got there around 5:30.I guess you could call the box office and purchase them over the phone.

From my understanding it's inside.Outside is for house bands and local talent and there is not much room.

I haven't seen them in an inside venue.....I just hope they can 'translate' their energy into the confinement of one building

Did you buy the "crash the gate" or any other special ticket to get in early?  If so, was it worth it?  If not, how was it waiting to get in.  I have been there once several years ago for David Allen Coe and we had to wait in a long line to get in.  I just want to know if the $10 someone mentioned earlier was worth it or not.

Thanks, and feel free to dish out any other tidbits about the place or your experience also.

No, we arrived a lil later than expected (pre-boozing, etc.) and missed Dirty Dozen Brass Band  >:(  But strolled right through with a few minutes to spare before Modest Mouse hit the stage.  Like I said before, the acoustics imo will not do the guys justice....but I hope it fools me.  It was a packed house for the concert with ample walking room upstairs.  I LOVE Modest Mouse and have for years but the vocals, acoustics, and small venue size relative to their status just didn't tickle my pickle.  Overall I 'enjoyed' the experience, but it was definately NOT what I had expected!

Saying that, I'll still see the guys the 31st

OK, cool.  Just ordered tickets a couple of nights ago.  I have talked a couple of friends of mine in to going with me and this will be their first MMJ concert.  I think it will be great no matter the size.  This will be my third concert, Orange Peel (which was awesome!), RCMH the other weekend, and now Myrtle Beach.

By the way to anyone who may be looking for rooms.  Wife and I got a room at the courtyard Marriott at Barefoot for 79 a night including breakfast buffet for two adults and a king bed.  Pretty good deal I thought for Labor Day weekend.

Just to give you all a few tidbits. The House of Blues is located in N. Myrtle Beach in Barefoot Landing (sort of a giant touristy outlet mall). Anyhow its located right across from Windy Hill (a section of N.Myrtle Beach). There should be plenty of hotels there...and they would be the most convienient to the venue. I have caught quite a few shows at the House of Blues. The only issue I have with the venue is you can get stuck in a shitty spot pretty easily and the VIP areas that someone was referring to earlier, actually blocks a good portion of  the balcony view. My advice would be to get there an hour or so before the doors open...and hit the floor. I got pinned in the back part of the balcony last year for the white stripes and couldnt see a lick of the stage. Hope this helps.

Good advice eleaf14.  I remember getting "stuck" around a beam or something in there at a concert and not being able to see good.

FYI about the courtyard rates I mentioned before; wife checked again last night for our friends and the rates are now 139 a night for the cheapest while the fairfield inn a mile down the road is 99 a night for the cheapest.  Not sure about any other hotels.  By the way, is anyone else going to play golf while they are down there?  And is there going to be a "gathering" somewhere before the show besides HOB?

best thing about the HOB Myrtle Beach, is how small it is.  I saw the White Stripes last year and it was the smallest venue of the tour, we had a group of like 10 guys on a beach weekend and had a blast.  you won't be seeing MMJ in these small places anymore after this year (sadly). the acoustics aren't that bad, its just an old shoddy venue.

I'd agree that the food blows, but pay for dinner and hang out inside to make sure you get close and get in before the masses.  the "early dinner" and "crash the gates" people can be in the hundreds, especially for a show like this.  you want to be in those early groups to get close.

Totally worth the trip knowing this may be the best chance I have at getting close to the stage for awhile.

Yes great performance by the boyz last night. They really packed that place,eh?I can see them moving on to bigger venues in the future.

I was stoked to get an Evelyn and War Begun, awesome.

I got a few stickers, keychain, and a vinyl copy of Tennessee Fire from the merchandise stand.

BTW,reminder to the merchandise guy, don't use yer laptop on top of the vinyl records, laptops emit quite a bit of heat and you could warp the records inside.

I planned on taping, but once we were told (lied to) by the ticket girl that it was "the band's" policy not to allow cameras, I knew that a recording wasn't going to happen.  My wife usually sneaks my stuff in inside her purse, which usually only warrants a cursory glance and we're on our way.  But the purse was returned to the car, and we were hassled by security anyway--my wife had to take her gum out of her pocket to satisfy them.

I personally thought that although the show was excellent, building steam as it went, the venue itself sucked.  The band merchandise area was cash only, which wouldn't have been so terrible except that their sole ATM was broken.  The sound was muddy on a few songs (the end of Dondante and one of the encore songs come immediately to mind), there were few good areas from which to watch the show that weren't on the ridiculously small floor or saved for "premium" ticket holders, and the whole place felt like one big cash grab.  The House of Blues is not a music venue, but rather a bar with extreme merchandising opportunities.  I hate to sound so negative, because the concert itself rose--nay, towered--above the circumstances, but I doubt that I'll ever visit another HoB unless given no better option--for example, the Black Keys are playing there on October 4, but I'm opting for Okkervil River in Richmond, VA, instead (I'm sort of in-between in NC).

Umm...these are all the songs in the order that I remember (probably something far from the actual setlist)

Anytime
Aluminum Park
Off The Record
Evil Urges
Touch Me pt 1
Two Halves
Golden
Thank You Too
I'm Amazed
EVELYN IS NOT REAL!!!!!!!!!
Sec Walkin
WAR BEGUN!!!!!!!!!!
Phone Went West
COBRA!!!!!!!!!
Librarian
Dondante
Gideon
Lay Low
Mahgeetah

Encore:
Wordless Chorus
Highly Suspicious
Smokin From Shootin
Touch Me Pt. 2
Run Thru
One Big Holiday

High energy last night. I was up front but off to the right of the stage, so I thought that I would get only a decent view of the show. I was mistaken. Jim was literally THREE FEET in front of me. If he had started swinging that guitar around he could have given us a concussion. I could see all his facial expressions, and it looked like he was having an extremely good time. The venue acoustics were pretty good, pity about most of their policies. I saw a lot of people pissed at the bouncers.

War Begun!  ;)

If you are going to do anything...do it right.

Next time...spend the extra $10 and crash the barricade.  We got there at 5:45 and there were still CTB tickets available for purchase.  So there is no excuse for not getting a good spot within the venue to watch the boys.

I saw them and the black keys a few weeks back at Red Rocks...and I thought that last nights show was better.  I loved the intimate setting.  I loved the setlist.  I loved it all.  I remembered looking back through the crowd a few times and thinking "that was the best 10 bucks I ever spent.

You know when someone walks up on you really fast, you can smell them.  ...I know what Jim's beard smells like now :)

So this show was a surprise for me! I've been to HOB a few times (Phil and Friends, Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips, STS9) and this was probly my best experience with the venue staff (went to Phil and Friends with my high school chemistry teacher from a few years ago, and HE got pretty much stripped search on the way in, thank god i had the corn ;)).

But I went to this show on a total whim, happened to be down farther south in Myrtle for Sat. and Sun. night, remembered the show and thought well I'll go over and see if it isn't sold out. A buddy and I rode down to the venue and well it was.  My friend and I, who has never been to ANY concert then went to use the bathroom in the restaurant. On the way out this drunk guy offers me TWO tickets for 20$ total.  :D Talk about a steal. Next thing I knew we were in and with very little hassle from security. Gettin a spot was hard at first (never not been at HOB before showtime) but eventually we made our way into the middle of the pit. They played a sick show, and I was at Bonnaroo this year where they played a pretty killer set at midnight in pouring rain. Sound and mix were excellent to my ears and seemed to be a pretty cool crowd, even bumped into a few people I knew. Still not too hot on HOB, but my hotness for MMJ has certainly increased. Oh, and I've done crash the barrier before and it really doesn't make too much of a difference in the long run... if you want to be up front, you'll get up front.

Incredible show last night, no doubt.  That is only the second time I've seen them, the first being at the Plex in Charleston, and I thought they were tighter last night, although the Plex show was incredible.  I went by myself then, so I had nobody to share it with.  That might be part of it.  I've seen about 10 shows at the HOB, and security is always been a problem.  About 10 years or so ago, I saw a security guy take a disposable camera from a fan, and literally rip the film out of it, while she cried.  I had to take my hat off last night for the guy to check, which I thought was too much.  I saw mics, but I guess they record everything, but maybe one of these days a paid download will be available.  I know from when a friend's band when they played at the HOB, that they took 20% of merchandising.  That might have explained the cash only policy, that they had two envelopes or something, but that might not have made a difference if they had had a credit card machine or not.  Maybe next time the band will play the Orange Peel.  Better venue, and Asheville sure appreciates them, even though the crowd last night was large.  We did not crash the barricade, only stood on the stairs to the side of Jim, and had an unobstructed view.

Thanks fellas.  I got a litho, as it was my 38th birthday!!

WOW!  What a show!  Drove down from Atlanta and everything was worth the trip.

Brought a newbie with me, and now he can't stop singing their praises!

FUCK SECURITY!

I've been to millions of different shows in a million different venues and NEVER EVER EVER have I had to lift my shirt up.  SOO...goodbye pipe and bud  >:(

But atleast they still let me in, and I got to see a sweet little show.

But seriously, why is security such a hard ass?

I was real close to you and Grinderman. Was grinderman the dude that snuck in the camera under his shirt? My g/f asked some guy how he got it by security and that's what he said. I was going to try and do that but was worried if they found it I would lose my place in line.

Great pics,thanks for posting them.

And yeah, the crash the barricade tickets were not needed if you really wanted to be up front.I saw plenty of folks push their way through.

Hopefully this is not the last MMJ show I will see, but if it was, I couldn't be happier.  Front row (Jim/Bo's side), Cobra, an amazing set all the way around, great friends, new fans, old fans, perfectly dreamy in all the right places, and then rocked into a frenzy.  They just do put on a perfect show.  I love those guys and I'll never forget this one.  Thanks to everyone, the band and all those behind the scenes and your sweet kindnesses...and Mike if you're out there reading..sorry about my air-brain in the elevator. :-)

What a great show this was!   It's funny because I think I was standing besides a bunch of you guys.  I think I was standing right next to a guy with a twins shirt at some point so that must have been jellyfish.  I was right up front as well, and had a great time.

I agree the sound was a little muddy on some songs, but they still just put on an amazing concert.

Hey guys TF here, I too was at the Myrtle Beach show as well. I have to say it was an awesome show. I was right down front for the first half of the show, and it sounded....not very good. I decided to relinquish my place to go get a drink. I didn't feel like making my way back down through all the people, so I took up a spot directly behind the sound board, and ya know what? It sounded GREAT! Any idea at all on how this could happen? I just thought, the closer I am to the stage, the better it is going to sound, right? Anyway, it still rocked!

Hey, Hard Helmet. This is that crazy kid you talked to in the crowd.  ;)

It doesn't appear to have been taped. The security was hard-ass about things being brought in.

I've actually found that a lot of shows sound better when you're a little farther back.  When you're up front, there's a good chance that you're in line with, or even behind the house system.  Plus you're getting more of the sounds from the stage (amps, drums, etc.) and less of the vocals in the PA.  In theory, the sound should be the best near the soundboard because thats what the sound guy is hearing.

And welcome to the board all you new peoples!

Whats up man! Yeah it was good meeting you guys.  We raged that front section.  That was my second show and have now decided that Ill definitely be hitting up most of the shows around the southeast next tour.  But yeah that makes sense about the security not allowing taping.  I couldnt even bring in my digital camera but maybe someone recorded it stealthily.

Haven't logged in for a while and posting about the show slipped my mind....

Great show, I was real close to the stage right in front of Jim, about three rows of people back. The energy was really high all night and Jim seemed to be really into the crowd. The HOB isn't my favorite venue, but I did the "jump the line" thing and got dinner and great seats for $10. It was so smokey that Jim started coughing during Librarian, which gave him and everyone a good laugh. Me and my buddy had a great time, I got War Begun, EV-O-LYN, and Cobra for the "rare" ones and they were each amazing.
