Title: Where are you staying for NYE?
Post by: Salacious D on Dec 22, 2008, 10:25 AM
I think a bunch of people are local and most likely heading back home when you're finally pooped out--but where are the out-of-towners staying??

I'll be at the HoInn Express.

I'm staying at the Hotel Roger Williams ...just four blocks from MSG. I won't be spending much time there, but I'm glad to be so close to the venue. That way when I have to get back after the show (after my face has melted off), it will be nice and easy.

We'll be in town for about a week and are staying at a friend's place in Brooklyn (Park Slope), but we got a room for NYE at the New Yorker Hotel-Ramada Plaza right by MSG.

I wish I had this issue.  I used to live in NYC/NJ...now live in Raleigh, NC.  Due to work, family and the like, I can't make it and it is KILLIN' me (I'll watch Okonokos that night...to dull the pain).
A taxi from Laguardia to MSG is going to be a hellofa fare.  You might want to take a cab to the subway (It'll give you a chance to experience the NYC subway, if you haven't yet).  Either the N or 7 trains will get you to 42nd St.  You can then just walk down ~10 blocks and over ~1-2 blocks heading west.

The N or 7 trains will work...and you would be getting on either at the end of the line, so when returning to your hotel you won't have to worry about remembering which station to get off at it...it's the last one for both trains.
You should be able to get the hotel to call for a cab and just tell them which station to take you to (The hotel should be able to tell you which one is the closest.  The hotel should also be able to help with getting you a cab home.  Get their number and give them a call when the time is right and they'll send a cab for you.).
You won't miss the 42nd st station on your way in.  It's a big station...sometimes confusing to n00bs.  Just follow the Exit signs out.
Once you get on the street, that part of NYC is very easy to get around.  It's a complete grid...all streets run only north, south, east or west.

Easy rule to remember:
Ave go north/south - Numbers increase as you go west (e.g. west of 7th Ave is 8th...now there are a few named ave.s that show up like Broadway, but for the most part, if you follow this logic you'll find yourself going in the right direction)
St go east/west - Numbers increase as you go north
MSG on 33rd st (between 7th ad 8th Ave)

So, you'll want to start going south from 42nd to 33rd.
You might have to walk one block west, from 6th to 7th Ave (depends on where you get out of the 42nd st staion).
It's a nice walk...I'd recommend it, if you've never been to NYC.  It gives you a good...tourist-like intro to the city.

After taking all this in, there is a monkey wrench to consider.  You'll be doing this on NYE and 42nd street is where the ball drops.
For this reason there will be lots of folks traveling in...a good reason to take the train in...traffic is insane.
But, you might want to review the map of the street layout a bit, because you might be forced down certain streets.  NYC treat the NYE ball watchers like cattle.
If you head in at ~7-8 for pre-game, etc, not many people will be on 42nd st yet to watch the ball drop.  When you get out of the show you'll be amazed at how much NYC will resemble a ghost town...the cops get the folks out real fast.

Here's a link from MapQuest I set up.  It's not perfect, but will give you a rough idea of what you'll need to do once you get to 42nd st.

The N train is closest to La Guardia, but you need to take a bus there. The M60 towards the Bronx will get you to The Astoria Blvd stop on the N Line. From there, you need to hop on a Manhattan bound train.

Don't fool with the 7, it won't save you any time.

you should hit up Molly's Irish Pub. On Third Ave just below 23rd Street. Great place. Murphy's stout on draft and the best fish and chips in the city. Pretty awesome burgers too!
