At Dawn - No doubt in my mind then probably into X-mas Curtain. But At Dawn fort sure. You heard it here 1st folks. "I good you bid evening"

Oooo! I like predicting crap. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
If they continue where the last NYE left off, will that make a difference?
My guess would be Evil Urges.
yea if they're taping this which i think they are (and i'm totally going so excited) then it's definitely evil urges. though wordless chorus we be awesome for me.
This is a big occassion, so I say it is something they never have opened up with before.
I miss the Mahgeetah opener...
I think Dancefloors + horns would be a really good choice.
kick it off in grand fashion with......stairway to heaven
With Page appearing in a cloud of fog for the solo. I think that's got to be it.
QuoteAt Dawn - No doubt in my mind then probably into X-mas Curtain. But At Dawn fort sure. You heard it here 1st folks. "I good you bid evening"
YES. I reeeeeally hope they open with At Dawn. It must happen. I'm a little doubtful now with all these Zeppelin insinuations, but maybe they'll start with a cover and then begin their set with AD?
Really though, I'll be ecstatic with whatever!! 23 DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i hope they save At Dawn for the the second half---
i think they'll also switch it up and not open w/EU
my prediction is HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS and somehow connecting that to the Oregon Trail theme.
WOW!!! I lack the courage to make such bold predictions and will take the easy way out and guess a non traditional opener or cover.
Something like ya' know You Can't Bring Me Down by Suicidal Tendencies :-?
Whatever it is, it'll probably be the best live song I've heard in my life at up to that time. :)
QuoteI miss the Mahgeetah opener...
+1
"Soooooooo, are you ready to go?"
Hell yes we are :)
Stairway...
i think they'd need to build up to that---this is not very feminine to say but why bust a load in the first 10 min of a NYE show :-)
This is a tough one. At Dawn does make a lot of sense for the opener. JJ said they were going to continue the Oregon Trail theme from the last NYE show they played in '06 at the Filmore (which was hilarious). At the end of that Oregon Trail skit they end up eating Two Tone Tommy to fend off starvation. Then the band came out on stage and started to play something but realized they were missing their base beat. Two Tone Tommy comes down from heaven to play base and they kick off the NYE show with "One Big Holiday"! Sick!!!!
So where do they go from there? Does the band all ascend to heaven with Two Tone Tommy? If so, "At Dawn" would make a lot of sense. Or do they all go to Hell because they just ate their friend for dinner and laughed about pooping him out later?
I think they are all headed for hell. Therefore the opener could be something from evil urges (maybe Highly Suspicious) or it could just be "I think I'm going to Hell". Followed by "At Dawn" to lighten our spirits.
What do you all think?
Quotei think they'd need to build up to that---this is not very feminine to say but why bust a load in the first 10 min of a NYE show :-)
I agree. There has got to be a little build up before you hit the ball out of the park for a home run. Stairway to heaven is a great song but I don't think they will cover that Zepplin song on NYE. Someone mentioned the Lemon Song. I like everything Zepplin did so I would be happy with any cover.
How about a band version of Tonight I Wanna Celebrate With You? I realize I am only suggesting this because of the sentiment of the title, but still. I know I want to celebrate with MMJ and all of you as well!
My guess is, is that they'll save OBH for midnight. "Stairway" would make sense based on the whole theme of the night. I really doubt it will be "Evil Urges". This is supposed to be a special night and they've been opening up with that one all year.
I'm going to go with "Gideon". I don't really know why. "At Dawn" would be pretty amazing.
I dont think they'll open with a cover, playing MSG on New Years is a great accomplishment, and they should honor themselves and their fans by playing one of the songs that got them there.
Dancefloors and Magheeta would be great and Anytime has been an awesome opener on this tour. I wouldnt be surprised if they threw a huge curveball and opened with One Big Holiday.
If It Smashes Down
just kidding
QuoteIf It Smashes Down

Haha. Not really an upbeat opener. However, I love, love, love this song and if they played it...I wouldn't be disappointed.
QuoteQuoteIf It Smashes Down

yeah, I would LOVE to hear the rarer tunes off of At Dawn, such as If it Smashes Down and I Needed it Most
same goes for TTF stuff, If All Else Fails, Picture of You
best opener, imo, would be Heartbreakin Man
Haha. Not really an upbeat opener. However, I love, love, love this song and if they played it...I wouldn't be disappointed.
i heard them sound checking "when i look you in the eyes" by the jonas brothers but i think they will play "juicy" by biggie smallz
Into the woods

i read this post before looking to see who'd written it. as soon as i read jonas bros. i knew it was you, cake! ;D
new york, new york. hilarious
if i have to make a semi-serious prediction....how about O Is The One That Is Real
the first time i saw the band they opened with O and it rocked.

BTW- I've missed you guys

I agree..."O" could be a rockin choice to get the crowd pumped...or Anytime...I'd put my money on either of those two. No matter what, we are in a win/win situation...this is gonna be fun.
Good vibes good vibes. :D

I'd love for them to open with O! That'd be absolutely AMAZING! I'm not a betting man, but if I had to guess, I'd put my money on One Big Holiday. ;)
QuoteBob Dylan "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" ('Live 1975' version)
Have they ever actually played that song? B/c I know I read a review where it was said that they played it but I wonder if someone just goofed and got it confused with "Tonight I Wanna Celebrate.."
It will be the band pleading with Two-Tone: I Just Wanted to Be Your Friend
QuoteSo where do they go from there? Does the band all ascend to heaven with Two Tone Tommy?
Well, at the end of New Years show in San Fran "Angel" Two Tone got his revenge and shot the rest of the band. Then they rest of them rose with him up the Stairway to Heaven as the Zeppelin version began to play over the PA. For those predicting stairway as the opener i hope your joking. No one busts out the stairway opener. Not even zeppelin can bust it out opener

Yes, they did. Quite a bit in '05, I believe. I know I saw them do it at Bonnaroo that year.

get ready for it...

They played it last year fot the I'm Not There Concert. They ROCKED it, too!
Even though I'm still holding to my prediction of Evil Urges, I'd love to see them break out something from The Tennessee Fire. I always get such a cheap thrill when 'Heartbreakin Man' starts up because I know I'm in for about an hour of fantastic songs. Or 'The Dark'. Yeah, that'd be great, too.
Hell, Jim could come out and read 'Goodnight Moon' and it would be a great start to the evening...
I actually think "It's About Twilight Now" would make a good surprise and awesome opener
Good Intentions is definitely the opener! ;D
I may be eating my own words. Twilight would be sick nasty to open with. Easy Morning Rebel would be as well though, and has no one mentioned that yet!! i mean come on:
"well the easy mornin rebel, well he has come. come down from heaven, all bathed in sun
he'll take to flyin, he'll take to the road... as long as he's movin to get dey blood!
he'll be the water if you'll be the wine. sent down from heaven in this earthly disguise
well the evening rebel, his heart is stone. this earthly body... just a temporary home
a dream of movin moves on thru the night
and he sure looks good when he moves in the light
he'll be the water if you'll be the wine. sent down from heaven in this earthly disguise
black hearted ruler? I only knew...
that loving moment I had with you"
... but dare they open the night with the horns? Anything is possible. Oh my god the anticipation is owning me right now.

that WOULD go along w/the story ;)
I have a feeling the boys will fall off the stairway to heaven leading to an evil new years eve.
Opener: I Think I'm Going To Hell
I don't want Jim falling off of any stairs. :P
Let me set the mood. The boys come out to thousands and thousands screaming fans. the stage is dark- just a blue tint highlighting lines so you can barely make out the figures. Jim walks up to the microphone- the crowd still screaming and eventually goes silent... everyone is on their feet leaning forward towards the stage, hearts racing, waiting for the first sound... The wait seems like an eternity- but the excitement does not fade. Bright white lights shoot out into the crowd and now the band can see us, at the same exact time the lights flash Jim screams "SO!" and we are all sucked instantly into steam engine. Imagine how your heart would burst when you heard that simple opening word. Welcome to New Years Eve at Madison Square Garden with My...OUR Morning Jacket :) :) :)

From the first time I heard Steam Engine, I thought about what an amazing show opener it would be.

I don't care when we get this song in the set -- just so we DO get it. Have ya listened to the Okonokos version lately? It was mind melting live...
Not a prediction and not sure if it's ever been done but...I always loved the way "It Beats For You" sucks you right in and just makes you all warm and happy.

They start up in Heaven (the rafters), and fall (parachute) down to Hell (the stage) where the "demonic" horn section is playing. ;)

Dark,
I think you are onto something. I don't know about the parachute but maybe decend slowly connected to wires while they are jamming on guitar. That would be sick! A flying Jim James with his V guitar. I kind of feel like they are super heroes anyway?
Steam Engine would be completely amazing.......though i am doubtful it will be the opener....something a little louder, faster to kick off the show. I expect something completely unique.....its new years eve in NYC!!!!!!!!!! Regardless of what it is, it will be amazing to see Jim post-injury....see you all there! :D

My money's on Evil Urges. Something familiar to fall into before they break into the crazy stuff everyone is dying to hear. Can't wait to hear their version of Auld Lang Syne. It's going to be legendary.
