Great show, but cripes, what's up with the fratboy assholes who show up in the Pit and annoy and physically batter people, and make nuisances of themselves with their incomprehensible, inconsiderate behavior. One date rapist prick actually took off his shirt while flailing himself around, as if he were the only person in the arena. Security finally dragged him and his clueless buddies away, but they were soon replaced by another similar group of 22-year old louts.
I dig people having fun, doing their thing and dancing, but my lord, you're sharing space with other human beings, act like you understand that. it's all so tragically ironic given what mmj stands for.
sorry for being a bummer, but these type of guys have become menaces at shows.
Douchebags! They deserve to get kidnapped, robbed, beaten and dropped off in Compton.
unfortunately they are everywhere. unavoidable at times. You cannot let that fuck with your show. In Chicago this Dbag kept dancin on my feet, in my space and was all over the place- first show I'm sure but you must get past it. This happens when the band you like gets pretty big as they are pretty fuckin solid
had one puke all over 2 of my silk posters, i almost murdered that fucker. MMJ is getting almost to well known, it seems that more and more dbags are coming to the shows just to party and socialize, i couldnt even hear dondante because of the talking, awesome performance by the boys but terrible time at the show.
yeah i was right in front of that shirtless date rapist. glad he finally got taken away
Really? I didn't see him...
It wasn't only in the pit where they were taking up valuable life-giving oxygen and personal space.
It was my daughter's first concert ever @ MSG (she's 20) and she had her pocketbook on the unoccupied seat next to hers, this Ahole goes to sit in the seat & must've thought he was on oprah or something and it was a gift bag, riflin' thru. (my daughter's rookie mistake but c'mon!)
then, later he high - fives a fellow douchebag in the row behind & elbows her right in the NOGIN. after tending to my daughter (she was more upset, than hurt, thankfully) I told her to tap douchebag #1 on the shoulder. when he turned around I shot off a flash from my point & shoot, stunned he says "what was that for"?
I said "so we can both remember what your face looked like before I fuck it up".
Him and his Ahole douchebag buddies were well-behaved after I planted that little seed...
Great answer!!!

Bummer to hear about some less than savory elements in the crowd. Our little corner of section 12 was absolutely awesome. There was a very friendly group of people from Louisville who flew in and another nice couple in front of us. The pre-show meet up was great too, thanks for arranging it Penny. Nice to put some more faces to names.
just as many inconsiderate non- "fratboy" , hippie douchebags that I've seen at 20+ years of going to shows, it definitely goes both ways
Hope you all were able to enjoy the show nonetheless....glad you got him with the flash.
my issues is with all the friggin cellphone cameras everyone holds up and you can't see shit. how good is a cell phone image from the 30th row anyway? stupid.
off the soapbox....have a happy new year everyone
QuoteMMJ is getting almost to well known, it seems that more and more dbags are coming to the shows just to party and socialize
That is EXACTLY how I felt on Saturday in Chicago when I was up in the front and surrounded by douchebags who were talking, mock-singing, and spending more time at the bar than in the pit. And people were complaining about others who were simplying SITTING in the audience and watching? Seriously? I will NEVER have any sort of respect for assholes who just show up to party rather than actually watch the concert.
Were they smoking cigarettes?
penny, i hope you dont mean me cause i was right behind you (actually, i cant recall being taken away.) but a "white-hat" was hauled off that was definately WAY outta control.
i was disturbed with the glowsticks being hucked a the band. i wouldnt have been as gracious. what a classless display.
on a brighter note, cant wait for someone to post this show on archive. both "move on up," "all i need," and "cold sweat" in my MMJ collection.
ALSO, lost my evil urges sticker! if anyone has one, i would gladly compensate for keeping up on my sticker fetish.

The one that hit JJ in the head was awful...I was next to a glow stick thrower guy. Nice enough guy, and he wasn't aiming for the stage, but still... ::)

i saw a douche intentionally aim for carl and when he hit near his feet, he high fived his friend. unfortunately, he was like 5 feet away, so that was a pansy ass throw.
i remember when i saw them play in jersey like 4 years ago at bamboozle (the guys even shook hands with fans before the show and seemed amazed people recognized them). When they came in with OBH and a pit opened, they said that was their first pit ever.
As ween put it, they went from playing to stinky hippies in a field in bonnaroo to a bunch of cruds in a parkinglot in jersey.

nah you were to my right side (and kept your shirt on) the guy was to my left and behind the dark and i a couple people back--i kept looking back-luckily everyone around him was getting really annoyed.
My friend and I ended up just leaving the area that these guys were in, for the first song they just kept knocking into us. Moved over to the left side of the stage and had plenty of space to dance my ass off!
I'm glad to hear that they got kicked out!

We stood next to the garbage can and had more than enough room. It was nice.

I was in the same area - it was great. Two younger college kids were in front of me, who I chatted with before the show. Nice folks, and in general everyone was friendly.
I didn't observe too much douchebaggery, but I did see some dudes being jerks to security... who to their credit are generally cool, unless f'd with. I don't understand the glowsticks being thrown at the band either. It's just... poor taste.
i was about 2 or 3 rows from the front in the pit, and i definitely had to pull crowd control duties a couple of times during the show
it was essentially guys trying to push themselves closer to the stage, but in turn, pushing other people out of the way who had been there for hours.
had a couple of guys come up behind us saying, "hey, hey my friend is over there. i'm just trying to get up to my friend." in his drunken slur. Problem for this genuis is that he was pointing at a couple of other forum members who had no idea who he was.
he was disposed of quickly. he came back later trying to "take pictures of the band." so i let him move forward, and then he proceeds to put his camera in front of everyones face and throw his hands up and sing the wrong words to the song.....he was removed soon after
i just don't understand why people can't just chill out and enjoy the show like everyone else, and have to act like douches.
whatever...it was only a few moments of aggrevation during an otherwise amazing night
Yes, the shirtless fellas in the Pit were of no value to the otherwise amazing environment, and it was a shame to see them drive away two of my new friends to another part of the floor for a good part of the show, but it was oh so sweet to be transcending during the extended solo on dondante, and to look over and see security swoop in an pull the boys out. Bittersweet and poignant.
we had "giant frilly mexican hat" guy in front of us. well, more the hat itself - since it kept changing hands. it seemed like once you wore the hat, the more you had to lean back to try and poke peoples eyes out. not cool, giant frilly mexican hat guy. not cool...

yeah that's my fault. my buddy was snowed in vermont and had to give up his two tix (which I had), so I posted a craigslist ad and that guy and his friend were first to reply - and beyond excited. I know one hat made it on stage. I also know they put tequila in plastic bags in one pocket, and fresh limes in the other, and were having a fiesta while waiting for wristbands.

you could find crowd control? i couldnt, even after i told an usher that my boyfriend got knocked out. there was NO security in the front of section 8.
i posted a rant in the general NYE show thread so i'll spare the story, but our night was ruined and he's off getting xrays and mri's today.
seriously, wtf?! why do people have to really ruin things for others? we had to leave after an hour.
None of this surprises me at all...
NYE is Amateur Night. Just glad the band was SUPER PROFESSIONAL!

that's interesting. i had to ask security to move twice because they kept trolling in the GA area and standing directly infront of me. At one point I think they had 3 guys searching for the people who brought the glow sticks.
Two were also debating whether to take out some dudes smoking a bowl. The stiff one was saying how it's illegal, the other one said "it makes no difference" and they left them alone.
QuoteNone of this surprises me at all...

True. But, I didn't think it would be so bad in the PIT. And actually, it wasn't that bad. Where we started the show was perfect. Had two guys to my right groovin' and dancing; the folks to my left were gracious enough to let me heap my jacket on top of their merch on the floor and outside of the sticks, they were OK. They loved Kenny's hat! :)
Things got a little silly when the guys in wigs appeared and then a friend of theirs (I guess) would squeeze in, then another, then another. I'm one of those stubborn folks who will not move or stop dancing if you attempt to crowd or take my little piece of land.
Worst was this little pissant chick smoking a tobacco cigarette. I asked if she could blow the smoke somewhere other than directly up (where my nose is located) and she replied something that I couldn't hear, but that I think was essentially "no." ;D She then was automatically volunteered to be my dance partner. A few hips, hands, claps, slaps, bumps later, she was gone. So was the cigarette. ;D
There was a taper in the PIT -- kudos to you. I hope that you were able to get a decent recording. You have/had the patience of saints.
Those were the happiest tapers ever! Normally tapers are kinda grim...can't blame 'em, I wouldn't want to worry about that expensive equipment in a boisterous crowd! But those pit tapers had their own lil taper dance party going. So cool.
Also, I HATE GLOWSTICKS. I kept getting pelted with glowstick fallout...I can't imagine how the band must feel with people actually trying to hit them! They can't really say anything about it, either, since then they'd really get bombarded...
I used to follow Phish, so I am fully cognizant of the soft neon allure of the glowstick. But I have come to a realization: FLYING GLOWSTICKS REALLY DON'T LOOK THAT COOL. I MEAN, THEY LOOK COOL, YEAH, BUT NOT THAT COOL. REALLY.
Please, people, stop bringing them to shows. :-*
Hey listen to these guys in the video are these Fratboy Douchebags or just fans getting REALLY into it sorry if its you

Were you in row H by any chance? We were in G and there were two seats behind us where a lot of people stopped and danced. Sorry to hear about the experiences of so many on this board who came into contact with those who brought an unsavory element to an otherwise fantastic night.
I know I've bitched about the douchebags in Chicago enough, but I was thinking...
If any those assholes (or anyone like them, ie. people who generally behave like dicks who are at the show for any reason other than the music) are here reading this board, then I have a message for you:
Last Saturday, the douchebags next to me brought out a one-hitter and started smoking up while talking during the show, inviting all their friends over to crowd my row (and personal space), and sing loud enough that I couldn't actually hear the band at points. One of them got hauled out by security. Don't get me wrong -- I have nothing against smoking pot. Indeed, I smoke quite a bit myself.
HOWEVER
In future shows, if any of you decide to behave like assholes at future shows and you happen to be around me, then you'd better be careful. If you piss me off enough, then I WILL narc on you to security in order to get your asses away from me so that I can enjoy the show.
The band and the music come first to me, people. Respect that.

What's wrong with everyone? There's no "tattling" in rock and roll!
Think I'm lame? I don't care. Really. I don't care. At all.
I pay to see a band play and listen to their music. I don't want to hear dumb conversations during "Golden", especially when I can't actually hear the song over the loud chatter surrounding me.
It's simple, really: don't be a dick and start ruining a show that I'm trying to enjoy, and I'll leave you alone.
you have to keep in mind that at a concert, there's a certain level of behavior that is to be expected. don't get in the shower if you don't want to get wet.
or as they teach us future lawyers, "in a crowded world, there's going to be some unwanted touching"
You think I don't know that?
What I'm saying, though, is that it was really bad where I was on Saturday night. Like, the worst lot of assholes I've been surrounded by at a show in about ten years. I only have so much patience.
I would be in the right, anyway. I mean, smoking weed IS still illegal...
Again, I don't care what people think of me. I'm there to enjoy the show.

so, if people are talking during Golden, and they're
not smoking weed, what in the world are you going to tell the security people? I'd love to be a fly on the wall for that convesation ;D
Have you considered going to the symphony? It's a little different experience, but it's awesome!

I was at a Wilco show where a man in a turtle neck refused to stand when the rest of the audience did so. He called security and made his entire section sit, which lasted until security walked away. Then he punched a guy. This is during I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, or otherwise, it's like Golden getting you so riled up you punch a dude.
Still, the only thing I hate is when you've got a great spot near the stage and you spend half your time looking behind you to see if some fat chick in doc martins is about to come crowdsurfing into your head.
i started this thread ... what prompted me was more than just talkers, and other disinterested people, but rather, bunches of young-ish dudes, maybe in their early 20s, not too intelligent, full of testosterone, charged up by too much beer and confused sexual energy, no idea how to appropriately control themselves or handle their feelings ... they flail around, knocking into everyone around them, with absolutely no regard for anyone but themselves, refusing to respect boundaries in any way. it's like the world is theirs, and every show is a hardcore show. there's no communicating or otherwise reasoning with them, so you're stuck taking in the show with half your brain, while the other half worries about whether they're about to knock your girlfriend over, spill beer on you, and force you into confronting them. it's truly unpleasant.
the ga pit on new year's was generally ok, except for 2 or 3 groups of these guys, one of which was mercifully hauled away by security. still, they did kill my buzz for about 1/2 hour.
also, after the show, some drunken jock decided to slam a door leading out of the garden ... right into my 7-month pregnant friend, almost knocking her over. these guys aren't merely an annoyance, they're a legitimate safety threat.
i'd like to start a movement of passive-ist geeks like me ... we can set up a signal, to be answered by all like-minded-geeks within earshot ... when we hear it, we know there are morons to be disposed of, and we all band together and toss them out. how good would that feel? there's strength in numbers, you know ....
kidding, of course, but you get my point.
can the signal be patrick's run thru clock-arms, resulting in the support converging as a mass of air-guitaring comrades?
I'm going to chime in here and say there is a general lack of respect these days and it's not limited to 20-somethings who can't hold their liquor.
At MMJ's Louisville show, a woman lifted her dress slightly and urinated on the ground less than a foot away from me. I actually felt it splash on my feet. At the recent Wilco/Neil Young show at MSG, we spoke with two 40-something guys on the rail who appeared to be nice, decent people. I even bought them beers for holding my spot at the rail when I went to the restroom. At some point during the show, they decided it would be okay to start grabbing my behind repeatedly. These are two extremes, but I've been to many, many shows this year and I have seen it all...and never cease to be amazed when I do.
My point is that while obnoxious, rude, anti-social behavior may be more prevalent amongst the people referenced in the title of this thread, it certainly isn't limited to them.
people who talk during "Golden" should be taken out back and shot, they are taking up valuable oxygen on this planet. i will be the one to explain to their loved ones. i don't buy the "you knew what you're in for" argument--that's just not acceptable.

Seriously... the only thing worse than a drunken, obnoxious douchebag at a show is a narc. Karma's a killer... don't think if you rat someone out the same thing won't happen to you in the future.
i don't think that talking is something to be expected at a concert. at the same time, i also don't expect a ryan adams-style reaction if and when it does happen (i don't see yim yames ever doing that though)
however, being occasionally knocked into, having your view blocked - occasionally, wide-pupils, and fragrant aromas are all quite expected.
i will agree though, talking during golden is just a waste, especially since there is a 99% chance it will be my wedding song. i like to take all of it in.
i am still most annoyed with the glow sticks hitting the band out of everything.
Quotepeople who talk during "Golden" should be taken out back and shot, they are taking up valuable oxygen on this planet. i will be the one to explain to their loved ones.
well, of course. But you wouldn't stoop so low as to tell security on them; that's just lame.
Talking during the soft songs drives me crazy as well. However, I try my best to remember that occasionally, in the past, when I was at a show that I may have only been mildly interested in, I may have had some conversations with people at the show that I haven't seen in awhile, and I very well could of pissed off a person that was a huge fan of that particular band. I'm also getting better at blocking all of the bullshit out, and zoning in on the show. I enter my own little world. At Jacket shows, it's amazing how many strangers have "joined me" in that world. A special moment in time. Strangers passing in the night, a knowing glance, and then never to be seen again. Focus on those people, and don't let the bad stuff ruin your night! (I realize this is not always possible with the extreme stuff, but don't let the little stuff get you down.)
on new years, there wasnt alot of "blocking" one could do. "amateur hour" an earlier post put it best.
theres not much of a place for talking at a show... especially when the large majority of folks are there to experience the auditory sensation.
generally at a show with a lull, you make your way toward the beverages. that usually helps the problem... unless you ARE the problem.
I didn't experience any problems at either Chicago show. At least not anything that was out of the ordinary for a Rock concert. Most everyone stood thru-out the hole show. I saw some sitting. I sat down a few times to rest my legs. It's no biggie, I can still hear the tunes.
I find the older I get the more tolerable I am with the douchetards. I can even go to a movie theater now and sit next someone chomping down on popcorn and talking on there celly without grabbing them by the throat.
WWJD ( probably grab them by the throat ) ;D

I hear ya on that one. At the Nashville show a couple of years ago some young college guy pushed his way to the rail before the show started, being loud, obnoxious, basically terrifying people. I was pissed at first, but then decided to try and change the energy and I struck up a conversation with him. Long story short, we talked for like 10 minutes and he poured a little of his heart out to me (sr. in college, no direction, drinks too much) and it loosened up the whole vibe around us and everyone seemed to get along.

I'm not sure where these people come from, but as a general rule of thumb if the way you have a good time is bothering anybody else, you should move along. Find an area or activity where you can do what you want to do with out causing someone else to not have a good time.
It's really not that difficult a concept, but it does seem like a lot of folks don't get it. How much fun are they having ruining someone else's night?
Being a stubborn Capricorn, my way of dealing with these people is to give them some of their own medicine (helps to be really tall and pretty good at boxing out). Funny how they never like it. ::)
