With all the newfangled technology, I'm surprised we're not able to get a running setlist!

I live pretty close to the theater, and I just got home.

My prayers for "Steam Engine" were answered with an extended version with a guitar -- not drum -- solo.  Seriously, it is the best I've ever heard of the song.

"Run Thru" was amazing.

"At Dawn" was the opener.

This night was lighter on Evil Urges songs.

We also got "I Think I'm Going To Hell".

The poster for tonight's show was different, but similar, to the poster for last night's show.  I may take a pic and upload it another time.

I love this band, but damn.  Two two-and-a-half hour shows in a row is exhausting.

Actually, I had my BlackBerry with me and was using it to take pics and upload them to my Facebook account during the show.

I tried to log into the boards so I could give you guys the set list in real time, but the browser wasn't letting me log in and post for some reason.  I still have to figure it out.  It's the new Storm and I've only had it for five days.

Title: Re: Reports from Chicago Sunday Show???
Post by: ultravisitor on Dec 29, 2008, 12:21 AM
Yep.  As soon as they started with "At Dawn", I knew we were in for a good night.  They've only opened with that at one other show I've seen of theirs (back in 2006), and it certainly sets a great tone for the rest of the night.  To me, tonight's show was better than last night's in every way.

Unless I'm totally forgetting, we didn't get "Strangulation".  We did, though, get "Sooner", which I always like hearing live.

Wow!  I listened to Sooner today.  I don't think I've heard it live since ACL 2007.

Glad y'all got another great show!
Title: Re: Reports from Chicago Sunday Show???
Post by: ultravisitor on Dec 29, 2008, 12:56 AM
Yep.  Plus the "At Dawn" opener.  Like I said, tonight's show was better than last night's in every way.  It was my favorite of the six times I've seen them.

They closed with "One Big Holiday", and the band's energy level was so high it seemed as though they were still at the start of the set.

Only six songs from Evil Urges if I recall correctly: "Evil Urges",  "Thank You Too!", "Remnants", "Highly Suspicious", "Smokin' from Shootin'", "Touch Me...Pt. 2".  Oh wait, "Look at You" was the first song of the encore.  It was Jim on stage alone with his guitar.

Jeez, how DO you guys REMEMBER the set lists??.  Great show tonight, no Dondante, but a helluva "Run Thru" made up for it, and as god is my witness, the last cord of the night at the end of OBH literally burst my left ear drum.. I have a medical condition which made the concert one pain filled ordeal (i will spare you the gory details), plus annoying people right in front of me CONSTANTLY yapping, and the fact that alcohol, drugs, and teenagers is an annoying mix..............................besides all that  the boys gave us a fantastic show, roll on NYE :D

...oh, and "Steam Engine" was awesome, and last but not least, Jim is looking lean and mean after his little Holiday 8-)

I was using my BlackBerry to keep notes of the set list, but stopped doing it once we got to the encore.

When we got "Steam Engine" with the extended (AWESOME!) guitar solo, I knew we wouldn't get "Dondante".  Seriously, tonight's "Steam Engine" was incredible -- better than the last time I saw them do it with Andrew Bird at Taste of Chicago.  I hope someone taped it.

At Dawn!  I will sing you songs!  Sooner (jim on Omnicord)!  I think I'm going to Hell!  Nashville to Kentucky (carl on sax)!  Lowdown, laylow, it beats 4 U, wordless chorus, Cobra!, golden, gideon, off the record.  In no particular order along with the other songs already cited.  I would have died if I heard strangulation tonight.

Yes! What the fu@k was up with people yelling during the banter.  As they continued to yell louder, he just stopped dead in the middle of a thought and had a look like, ok, you don't want to hear me talk and subsequently went right into Golden.  I was embarrassed for Chicago.  I know I dawged Chicago crowds in the Saturday thread too but give me a break.  I've never seen any $hit like that.  That was fu@king weak sauce!

Setlist Reads
At Dawn
It Beats
Evil Urges
I'm Amazed
Gideon
Wonderful Man
Golden
I Will Sing
Lowdown
Sooner
Thank You Too
Anytime
Remnants
Lay Low
Highly Suspicious
Off the Record
Hell
Smokin From Shootin
Touch Me Pt 2
Run Thru

Look at You (Acc)
Nashville to Kentucky
Steam Engine
Cobra
OBH

The picture I took of the setlist actually cuts off after Cobra.  I'm pretty sure nothing else was between that and One Big Holiday.  Great show tonight, once again!

I was so happy to get Remnants tonight.  I had a feeling with At Dawn but as an opener; oh my.  I didn't see that coming.  Sooner, I Think I'm Going to Hell, Nashville to Kentucky and Cobra.  What a night!

I can't sleep.

I think I'm going to cry. They played Sooner!! If they would combine Sat & Sun set list for NYE that would be killer.

P.S. I hate it when people yell out stuff when anyone is trying to talk between songs.

This was seriously an amazing show.  Right up there with Bonnaroo 2006, Louisville 2008, and Milwaukee 2008.  Some slow burners and interesting progressions.  Run Thru, Steam Engine, and Cobra were incredible, but nothing could beat my company and my seats.  2nd row pit-center.  We were on top of the stage for most of the encore.  I will post pics and vids when I get back home.  My only "complaint" was the lack of interest in the show by 1/2 the people in the first two rows.  It was mostly 40-50 year olds (I'm 41) and many of them were total stiffs.  Couldn't even crack a smile.  No bobbing and weaving.  Feet were glued to the floor and seemed to be passing time.  I don't get it.  I guess that's why there's chocolate and vanilla.  Maybe those chocolate lovers should skip dessert and leave it for real connoisseurs 8-).

Wow! I was lucky enough to see both shows in Chicago and MMJ always blows me away! What fantastic shows. I am just so damn impressed with these guys ...I really think that Carl is one of the finest guitar player's around combine that with Jim's playing and you have combustion! The rest of the band is just so tight. The other thing is that you can tell that the band really enjoys playing together and they are one of the few bands around that give you your $ worth...2 1/2 hours playing time..the only thing better is a 3-to 4 hour set at Bonnaroo. Thanks MMJ for ending 2008 for me with a BANG!

They definitely played Wordless in the encore...the sax on Nashville was unreal!!!  The At Dawn opener was sick, I had a feeling that was coming...other highlights include the Sooner (w/ omnichord!!!), Cobra, Remnants!!!, Going to Hell and Lowdown.

Crowd seemed pretty reserved on the floor for most of the night, but everyone seemed to wake up and start rocking out during the encore.

The boys really took care of us in terms of the setlists for the 2 nights as well, i.e. changing it up for us rabid fans that went both nights.

Now I just need to hear from work that I need to head to NYC tonight and I'll be spending NYE with the boys!!!!

What a fantastic show...as Caseydog noted, a slow burner!  The crowd started out a little more subdued as a result, but warmed up into a frenzy by the end of the evening.  Thanks to our Badger friends in the front row for sharing some great encore moments with us!   :D

The band seemed a little more comfortable tonight, too.  They were in fine form, jamming things out a LOT more, both Saturday and Sunday night, really...they sounded phenomenal.  NYE can't come soon enough!

I really must echo a few of the previous comments.

1. Two 2 1/2 hour shows in a row are indeed exhausting, especially when the you spend the first one in the pit, including encore with arms on stage in front of Carl. I'm pretty sure my neck snapped during Off the Record on Saturday, leaving me with little to no neck movement for the next 4 1/2 hours of their performance.

2. I'm worried that Chicago is developing a reputation for sleepy/talkative crowds. These shows were no exception, and Thom Yorke literally told us to wake up during Radiohead's performance at Lollapalooza. Goddamn Chicago, shut the fuck up and dance!!!

That being said, the shows were legendary. Phone Went West was particularly glorious, as was TWTHS the first night. Second night Cobra was my highlight of the weekend, incredible ending, At Dawn and Look at You were tearjerkers. Amazing weekend, I couldn't have asked for more. Have fun at MSG ya'll!!!

In my mind it's final.  Chicago crowds fu@king suck.  Now don't get me wrong, it's not everyone, but as they say, it only takes a few bad seeds...  I've been to shows (granted not all MMJ) in Chicago, Milwaukee, Alpine Valley, Kansas City, St. Louis, Dallas, Austin, Virginia Beach etc. and Chicago is the worst.  Too cool for school.  You either have people that are completely disinterested or out of control drunk idiots.  From now on my venue of choice will be anywhere but Chicago.  Being a resident here, I guess that means a lot of trips to Milwaukee.  Fine by me.

To all of those that rocked, whether in your seat or on your feet, most likely everyone that's on this board, this is not at all directed to you.  To all of you a$$hole$, you fu@king suck!

Clearly you have never seen a show in Portland.   ;D

I have no complaints about the crowds this weekend, and I am loath to condemn all Chicago crowds based on a few dull apples!  Personally, I love an energetic, dancey, enthusiastic crowd, because I believe that bands feel that energy and feed off it.

But everyone enjoys a show in their own way, and there's nothing you can do about that.  There were some sort of uninterested-looking people in front of us, and a gaggle of screaming high school girls behind us, but the kids were pretty damn hardcore and sang along to all the songs, even the more obscure ones, so kudos to them!
Title: Re: Reports from Chicago Sunday Show???

For the few complaining about Chicago...I don't know where you were sitting.  Everybody by me were completely into it...dancing, singing, etc.

I've been to concerts in many cities and you will always have people talking and being disrespectful.  I'm not defending any of the idiots...I wish people would grow up....especially the ones blowing weed toward my pregnant wife's direction (get high before the concert and respect the people around you!).  BUT you can't stereotype Chicago; I've experienced it everywhere.

...with that said....EXCELLENT show and great set.

As far as the Chicago crowds--on the floor Sunday night--folks around me were rocking out (but that was largely due to the magnetic moves of MsYvon, who I was lucky enough to be standing next to for the whole show!).  Saturday was a bit more subdued--but I was up in the balcony.

I don't know why more people weren't getting down-- I was just happy to be there.

I agree with ALADY..of course there are always going to be people that aren't into a band as much as you are but one thing that I truly hate is people that are talking during a show. If you want to talk go out into the lobby!  I have actually asked people to shut up....most of the time it works. I try to ignore everybody around me and I focus on the band and the music......And one more thing....why is it that every time I go to a show (and I go to alot) there's always a taller person standing right in front of me..I think they should sell tickets based on height! Just kidding.

Yeah, that was a bummer for sure, but not much you can do about it, unfortunately.  And I don't think the yappers in Chicago were any kind of anomaly in terms of their overall yappiness.

Crowds are a tricky thing.  I love the energy, but it's hard to find a good balance sometimes - are they singing along, but singing too loud?  Dancing, but bumping into people and spilling their beer?  Being respectful during the quiet songs, but not cheering loud enough between songs?  It's so rare you'll find a "perfect" crowd.

I recommend a good pair of earplugs (http://www.earlove.net/); not only do you protect your hearing, they filter out a lot of the crowd chatter   8-)

agree with smooth operator.  I love when bands talk to the audience, but it is  so hard to understand.  Do all lead singers mumble or is it the acoustics?  What did Jim say about Perfect Strangers?  I heard him mention Cousin Larry and Belki, but couldn't make out the rest.
Title: Re: Reports from Chicago Sunday Show???
Post by: Bob Loblaw on Dec 29, 2008, 03:32 PM
He was talking about how in the credits for Perfect Strangers, Larry and Balki walk by the Chicago Theater on their way to Larry's workplace, the Tribune; just one of the many ways in which the theater we were in was historic (jokingly).

I hope I'm wrong about him being cutoff but I was in the first row outside of the pit all the way on Carl's side.  I could understand almost everything Jim was saying so I don't think I am.  He was talking about the beauty in the curves of the architecture and how he believes it's closer to the reality of God than the linear world we live in.  He went on to discuss how he thinks it would look like the inside of our brains.  Everytime we learn something new a new molecule is formed on our brain and for those that are constantly learning, the physical appearance of their brain is always changing and for those with a wealth of wisdom, he could see their brain being intricate, beautiful and very curvatious (sp?) like the beautiful, historic building we were in last night.  Of course, I'm paraphrasing.

I was in the pit for Saturdays show and a guy two rows back from me (stage left, house right) got kicked out for smoking(it smelled really good too) and last night I was in the 6th row on Carl's side and I didn't see anyone around me smoking but there was a security guy two rows up.
I took care of that business right before I headed inside plus then the shrooms took effect...ahhhhhhhhh

Word. Sunday was the bomb. I drove from jersey on saturday morning to see the saturday show and had to drive back on Sunday for work today. It was brutal, but oh so worth it. Sunday just rocked on 8,000 levels.

I was worried about the set lists. Yea, I'm a set list punk, and proud of it. I don't cry when I don't get the songs I want, i just get frustrated when a band I see often that has sooooo many songs they can play, chooses to play the same 25 of 30 songs every night. I get why they do it, I get that they are supporting an album. I'm just selfish.

After the Evil Urges/Greatest Hits of Saturday night, I was worried. I will doubt them no more. Sunday couldn't have been more different. IWSYS, Sooner, Cobra, Steam Engine DAYUM! so so good.

There were other differences between the two nights. You could definitely sense the rust on Saturday. They seemed more confident on Sunday. You could also sense Jim was sore on Sunday from rocking on Saturday, he danced around much less spastically on Sunday.

I thought the crowd was fine. I met cool people sitting near me on both nights, just happy to be there.

The Sunday show was an epic set list. Steam Engine, fucking perfect.

New Years is going to melt some serious face.

Awesome show. Just got back into Michigan. I can't believe more people aren't talking about Nashville to Kentucky, it was amazing, and the sax solo sounded unreal, it was perfect. My friend doesn't like sax in rock music ( :( ) but he even thought it was amazing.

This was my second MMJ show i've been to, the first being the Detroit show earlier this year. Both amazing but so different. I was lucky to have front row in Detroit and feel pure energy like never before, and for Sunday's show I was able to witness the amazing work they do with the lights. Holy shit. It reminded me a lot of the Okonokos DVD. All in all awesome, may have to comment more later when I'm not so sleepy.

One thing no one has mentioned yet is Jim connecting with the crowd doing this sweet thumbs up thing. He flashed it once and the crowd returned it.

Later during the intro to Touch me pt 2, Patrick was about to enter and jim waved the band off to do the intro again. when he neared the end he looked up and gave a thumbs up, like asking the crowd, 'does that sound good to you?' everyone cheered and gave a thumbs up and the band entered the song. It was pretty sweet.

Excellent two night run.  CARL was on fire all Sunday night. Loved the jams on Off the Record first night as well as Phone went West. Lay Low's were excellent, really like the Remnants and classic closer Run Thru.  All and all second night ranks way up there (12/27 was very solid too)- if anyone saw Milwaukee this fall- that set the bar for me.  ENJOY NYC and MSG!!

Anyone else have pictures or links to video??

You guys had fantastic sets both nights!

And as for the crowd conversation, I have to agree with ALady and say that you're never going to find a perfect crowd. I think the only reason why someone might think a crowd is 'good' is he/she was lucky enough to not be next to the assholes that night, because you know there are some at every show.

With that said, I can pretty much tolerate any behavior. You feel like sitting? Whatever. I get bumped during your killer dance moves or your drink spills a little? Okay. The one thing I hate is when people yell absolutely ignorant things to whoever is talking on stage. When I went to see Bon Iver a few weeks ago, this guy in the crowd yelled 'I have a man crush on you!' to Justin Vernon. Then a different guy yelled out something about 'your lumberjack chest hair!' It's one thing to yell out a song title or a 'You're awesome', but shit like that really drives me nuts.

I agree...it seems talking is just so prevalent at shows these days.  I don't get it; aside from annoying the fans, it's really disrespectful to the band.  But talking is better than the two jerks I befriended at the Neil Young/Wilco show a couple of weeks ago.  Started out as nice guys...then ended up continually grabbing my backside until my friend intervened.  Ugh.

Man, I thought my drive was long! I drove in from Michigan (about a 3 1/2 hr drive) and had to leave after the show cause good ol' work was waiting for me on Monday! I waited with a few other diehards for almost 2 hours for the band to come out. One of the roadies brought out Ponch and the girl bear (for shame I don't know her name) to load up on the bus and we all got to take pictures (of course no flash at night makes a not so good pic). That was fun!

The guys were amiable as always. I have so much love and respect for these fellows. Not to mention finally getting up the nerve to actually talk to them and not stare at my shoes!

Sunday definitely rocked on 8,000 levels! This was my seventh show and damn if it didn't blow my mind (AGAIN!). It was like a wave of goodness that just washed over me during the show. NtoK was just perfect, Carl was in top form as usual. Sooner with Omnicord was awesome. I always find excellent people in attendance at Jacket shows and last night was no exception. A few were first timers and they got a hell of a show. I'd drive anywhere to see this band. Tell me where and when, and I'll be there!

In that Jambase Band of the Year article, there's a throwaway comment from Jim, calling drugs "overrated".  That's neither here nor there, but generally speaking, they've never struck me as a particularly hard-partying group.  They barely even drink alcohol on stage.

Your song titles are a little off too, SoundCitizen; it's "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Part 2" not "Touch me or I'll Scream Part 2".

Crap. I knew I would end up putting my foot in my mouth...he didn't say exactly what I said, but it's implied, I guess. Crap:

"I'm into the power of altered states, and I've had a lot of really good drug experiences," says James. "But Miles Davis always said he played best when he was straight, and Jerry Garcia said that if he were on acid onstage, he'd rather be chasing a butterfly through a field."

I just wanted to thrown a big fat THANK YOU to the band and the fans at the Chicago Theatre last night. I can't believe we bought those tix way back in April. After the elongated wait the band delivered and delivered and delivered.

After reading many of the previous posts I want to report the people in our immediate area were all dancing, sitting, jumping, swaying, bobbing or just plain standing there. Regardless of how we reacted to the band we all had one thing in common. We were completely engaged by the music.

It's refreshing to go to a show to see a band who clearly loves what they are doing. It rubs off on the fans to create a special memory, like last night. A few weeks ago I saw the Smashing Pumpkins on the same stage and I left that show feeling dirty and unappreciated. Billy C. should see MMJ to try to recapture the fun in music.

Last night, my friends and I walked down State street with big smiles after 2 1/2 hours of masterfully played rock and roll.

Jim, I know you prob won't read this but I'd love see you guys play a room designed to look like the inside of your brain. What a ride that would be.

MMJ delivered, again. Thank you from the fans to everyone on the crew and in the band.

I don't think I'm taking a liberty to say we all love your music, effort, your blood, sweat, and tears.

Have a great trip overseas, a happy new year, and PLEASE come back to Chicago soon.

Alright, perhaps my last post was juvenile but may I ask what type of response you expected from such a &(*&^ review?  I personally encourage comments that may be contrary to the commonly held opinions of many board members including myself.  Attempts at civilized online discourse certainly has its limits.  I do believe, however, that you have Carl Lewised over the line of propriety and into a realm of musical criticism that, in comparison, would warrant major tabloids to earn global awards for journalism

You should change the name of your blog and screen name to something more fitting like "Breathalyzer, Hair Sample or Piss Test."

May we all be blessed with such toxicology screening prowess.

Wow, struck a pretty negative chord in here.
First, I'll say that I have absolutely no evidence that James was high, drunk, tired, sad or sleepy in Austin. That's why I said it "seemed" like they were high, etc. I was only giving an opinion, because it was such a drastically poor performance - I couldn't help but wonder. If you went to that show, I'd be surprised to hear that it was anywhere near what they are capable of as a band.
Second, I'm a fan. And by all accounts, this one was a really good show and I've already said the same. I'm glad I went and I'd recommend it.

Some are better than others, as I'm sober going over them know, the wide angle shots came out much clear(er) than the ones focusing on

for anybody who picked up a poster at chicago--did they do the poster wristbands so you could pick up your poster after the show?

No, they didn't on either night.  We had to carry our posters around with us.  It was raining on Saturday, too, so I was worried, but they put our posters in plastic bags to help protect them.

this is the first chance i've had to open the laptop since sunday's show.  i've read thru the previous posts here so i'll just add a few notes...

1.

SWEET MOTHER OF PETE!!  WHAT AN AMAZING NIGHT!

--they were on fire sunday!   to hear i will sing you songs AND remnants in the same set list is just nuts.  that these men can create such ethereal, breathtaking music and then blow the roof off the place 10 minutes later.

well, damn!

--on the way to the show i told wendy and allison, "i would love to hear at dawn tonight."  GORGEOUS!!

--nashville to kentucky.  with a saxophone.  AHHHHH!!  soo beautiful!  this was the song that killed me, flat out.

(it is 4:20 am on dec. 31.  i am trying to keep from writing the usual, verbose, song by song review here, but i'm having trouble.  must.  go.  to.  bed...)
--the open to run thru:  in my notes i scrawled:  RUN THRU  HOLY HELL OPEN!!  this song was a juggernaut from note one!

--of all the shows i've seen, this may be my favorite set list.  so varied.  and LOADED with stunners!!

it was fab dancing with salacious d & her pal!  we really lucked out having enthused people in the area.  i've got an evil plan, babe spotted me after the crowd and came up to say hello!

AHHHH!!!  i have so much more to say, but am willing myself into bed (my host's couch), with a "get fuzzy" book and some water.

one last note:  at the end of the show, allison said to me, "you lost your shit, didn't you."   ;D  yeah, maybe.   [smiley=beer.gif]

QuoteOh I forgot, Remnants was epic...awesome song.

Hopefully if they play it on nye it'll get me to like it. It's pretty much the only jacket song I don't really care for.

i agree---i'd trade it for anything else--just sayin'  ANYTHING

Oh wow!  I love Remnants.  One of my all-time favorites.

QuoteThis is the first of almost 2 dozen clips I took from the two shows. They are shaky ( some more than others ) but what can you expect
from a guy with a pretty decent buzz going, and having one helluva time?

Some are better than others, as I'm sober going over them know, the wide angle shots came out much clear(er) than the ones focusing on
any one random person or part of the stage.

Anyhow, I'm sure these will be appreciated in one way or another.

These are great Mike! It was a blast running into you and Taterbug at the show on Sunday. Thanks for letting us invade your airspace towards the end of the show! What an awesome night!!!

Yo foxtrot,  It was cool to meet you and your lady ( who I can't remember her name right now, at the time I think I  forgot my own name  :) ) .. What a show, I absolutely loved the booth seating we had.  We had a waitress and plenty of room to get up and boogie.  You picked the right show to go to, what a fuckin setlist.  Don't get me wrong, nite 1 was also awesome but 2 was awesomer.  Let me know when your band is playin in the area, I think Jernigan gave you my address.  Your more than welcome to invade my airspace anytime. To bad we didn't cross paths earlier in the show and you could of come up and partied more with us.  later, Tater

Seriously why are your reviews always so awesome?? Reading through your notes makes me feel like I'm in those moments when I anxiously await the next song and the initial rush when it starts.  :)

P.S. Still jealous about the Chicago setlists...

wow!  thanks for the good words, all!

maybe i'll post a thread here, too.  my write ups are a bit long and get swallowed up pretty quick in a fast moving thread.

ok.

i'll do it!  usually i write them here, then post them on via chicago.  i have to edit all the smilies i use here to match there. this time its the reverse.

i'm up to it!

Quoteturns out the couple next to me were posters on the mmj forum. (about 3 songs into the set she commented, "can you believe they opened with "at dawn?!" i was so excited to be next to someone like that at a show!

hehe, it was *awesome* being next to you at that show!!

I don't know if you noticed, but a few seconds after you slipped back into your spot, I switched spots with my hubby so there would be *two* crazy dancing people next to each other instead of one dancing person--one stoic person--and then another dancing person.

Good times  :D

i did!  for a moment i thought maybe it was b/c i was bumping into him or something, but then forgot about it.  glad it was a positively motivated move!

*note to self: petition riny for a gif of a dancing smilie...or that dancing banana.  that would be fab.*
